Howdy sacks and dolls. This isn't my first shot at making music in LBP and certainly won't be my last. I had lots of fun composing the music, and giving it a setting ie The Midnight Kitchen.

Description:
This isn't your usual "push a block o' sponge along in a straight line" music level. Its interactive! The music is split up into 2 bar loops. These loops spawn inside a musical Oven at the centre of the kitchen. The player is then able to trigger each loop via grab switches on top of the oven. This way the player is free to string together the different melodies of a song! He is in control of what way the song flows and is free to end the level whenever they're done.

I've also created the surrounding kitchen. Its done in a realistic style, and many of the appliances are interactive. The level is very short, that is if you don't hang around, chill out and listen to some tunes. My main focus was creating the music so I hope people won't just skip that part.

If I get enough feedback and support I will be up for creating a long platforming version for this level. I'm thinkin a journey to the Musical Oven from a mouses point of view. Platforming through a realistic kitchen in the dark.

I'm doing as many F4F's as I can, I won't be busy in the next 2 weeks :D

I'm looking for feedback and critique of all sorts so tear it apart! :arg:

Huge thanks to Vanemiera for capturing this :D

I'd like to say THANKS to everyone who helped out and gave support in a project thread ;)

I've entered this in superBlast's music contest, so if you're interested in some really innovative music levels, check that thread out. Each entry has been completely different to the typical music levels that you see on cool levels.

Your level looks awesome... I might not get to it until Friday... But I am really looking forward to playing this level :)

Thanks dobi, are you looking for feedback on a particular level or yours?? I'll give them a shot anyhow if I'm not too busy.

Fantastic level! :)

The music is really good, red button is best, and it actually looks good unlike the other music levels. What makes it even more impressive is that the music is entirely custom.

5/5, undoubtedly.

My last one "Little Dark And Stormy Night"

They go in chronological order if you want to see how I've progressed... But my last is my best I think.

Well, track number 2 is still stuck in my head. From two days ago :) That's a good thing for a musical level. Love the originality, love the kitchen - looks fantastic and feels like a real kitchen. I really hope this level does well cause I'd like to see that platforming version your talking about!

It should do well, because you can't DIE. XD!!!!

No, seriously.... I played with this for a while the other day and thought it was really cool. Sort of an interactive "It's a small world after all" done in a kitchen setting. (the reason that comes to mind is that the little loop tunes were playing in my head for about 2 hours afterwards - I had to throw on some AC/DC to reverse it)

Best part: you made the exit into a microwave!

I liked your level Pitcard.

I thought it was a interesting concept and that was original (even if done before if i remember right). Outside the music, your decoration is awesome. I simply feel like I am in some giant kitchen at night. I have the purple sample stuck in my head :)

I wonder if your thermo is near the top? I would have like more samples of samples to play at the same time. Maybe for Music in the Kitchen 2 ?

Otherwise, I don't have much negative stuff to say. Some instrumentation is off-beat (I know it's hard to line up everything in the right time) and maybe the kitchen could have been larger and more interactive? Nothing important but more stuff do to for no reasons like breaking the eggs.

Continue your good work! :)

Thank you Jaeyden & CCubbage! I'm really glad the music was stuck in your heads afterwards. I hope to get to page 1 and brainwash ALL sackboys with my quirky music @_@

Cheers for the feedback Ranger

Actually my Thermo is only about 1/3 full! This is why I'm thinking of making an extended platforming version. I have lots of ideas, and its great that I'll have the thermo space for them.

Another thing that I might do before this is: Make a Morning version. I can just have the kitchen set in the morning. All I'd have to do would be turn the brightness back up. And make some new loops that'd go well with the morning atmosphere.

About the cracking eggs... I made them so they have a crack noise if you push them off the counter top. But I couldn't really think of a way of having them crack open and have eggy gloop go everywhere. Any suggestions. It's hard because I'm using the premade Egg objects. Maybe just have them disappear and have egg stickers spawn...

Yeah you could probably fake the egg breaking. Have a magnetic switch attached to it that would fall in the range of a magnetic key and have some egg shards spawning and someplane with the egg sticker on it.

EDIT: I'm dumb because you can make the egg dissolve. You might want to have a trap on the floor so the egg falls into some hidden room and then you spawn the rest of the crap with just the necessary delay so the trap is closed when the stuff spawns.

Yes, I too had your tunes rolling through my head. Very well done.

The scoreboard was awesome! The waste bin jump was cool. You asked if it was too dark. I was playing while the sun was still shining in and I had no problems. Thought it looked great!

5 stars + heart. Nice job!

Finish product is AWESOME :)
Pros:
+It's a music level.... but it's nice to look at!
+I can choose what it sounds like
+The general art style is very nice
+The scoreboard, very clever!

Cons:
-Some of the music isn't to my taste, but it's not your fault

4 stars + musical

The trap door sounds do-able ranger. But I was thinking... I could somehow attach a brain to the egg, but have it hidden. Then have it pass through a big plasma ball (also hidden somehow :S). In theory it should destroy the brain and also the egg. Anyone tried destroying non-dissolve objects with a vulnerable brain + plasma???

Thank you for feedback v0rtex. On my tv it looks grand when playing in a dark room, but when the light was shining in I could barely see anything... but that wasn't really to do with my level brightness. So it sounds good to go :)
I'll probably try your 00sack level, I think I saw pics of it.

This THEORICALLY works but make sure the plasma ball only is on the layer of the brain and not the egg. If the plasma ball touch the egg the plasma ball will disappear.

But I think it would be alot harder and buggier to pull off than my trap suggestions + you would probably see the brain anyways since the egg is not that huge. Also, the player could touch the plasma ball and make it disappear, depending how the egg fall it might not be the brain that touches the ball but the thing that its attached to (then it kills the plasma again), etc etc.

I see what you mean by touchin the plasma ball to make it disappear... But with hiding the brain, I could have a piece of wood stuck to the back of the egg with the brain attached. Then just hide everything on the same level behind a thin wall. Still..... I'm not arsed putting so much effort into something like that. Maybe if I'm working on something similar in another level though.

The "egg problem" of your level really isn't a real problem indeed! ;)

If I really have the time, I'd love to make the platforming version, and I'll see about creating some even more realistic effects. I'm all about tactile gameplay and atmosphere ^^

Hopefully Vanemiera can do a film capture of this. Should be up soon.

Just playing it now.

Beautiful. The tracks are so soft and serene, I just wanna fall asleep lol, too bad it's 8:40am where I live lol! My favourite is white and cyan, least favourite purple. This made my day. 5 stars, hearted, beautiful tag.

Thats awesome CCubbage! I really didn't think this level was any sort of material for the kids. I thought it would bore the pants off them >_>

Just wondering... is it still possible for me to get into community spotlight 11 with this?? Cause it was kinda released a day before 10 came out so will the next spotlight cover older levels? Just curious ^^

Cheers Dk! I had lots of fun making the music and building the level around it, but its feedback like this that really motivates me :D

Btw ccubbage, I finally played your Tiger Woods minigolf! I'll give you a bitta feedback on the thread. It's perfect for competition, keeps everyone comin back for a higher score!

For the spotlight, you'll have to wait and see like everyone else :D.

But, no there is actually no time limit on being spotlighted. However, I wouldn't consider your level old - your level was actually released AFTER the deadline for us to make our spotlight picks (even though it was before the spotlight was released).

That's a really unique level! I like your musical compositions and it's such a beautifully rendered area to keep them in :) I especially liked how subtle you lighted it. It seems like street light leaking in from a curtained window. Really nice work.

I really dug this... I have no cons to add at all, except that I wish there were some fun things to do in the kitchen.

Reminded me of the old Tom & Jerry cartoon, where they were battling away in the kitchen... :)

Thanks a million, Gravel, Zwollie and Rajah :D

I see you've signed up to.... possibly the greatest community on the net Gravel, welcome mate.

Couldn't be happier with this spotlighted, I think I'll have to make that platforming extended version sometime... it'll have to wait a good few months though, probably during or after summer.

Haven't seen you round for ages Rajah, I'm gonna PM you a link to superBlast's second MUSIC CONTEST!

He just opened it today, and since you started working on something for the first one, I'm sure you'd be interested. I'm judging by the way, so I'm looking forward to MORE LBP TUNES :D

This was a great idea, implemented in a very creative way. I enjoyed how each of the loops were compatable with each other. It makes me wonder if something like this could be condensed into a background layer and be interactive through gameplay, similar to the function of MM's music boxes.

I liked the aesthetics especially. The kitchen look was dead on, without being over elaborate or cluttered. The oven, with it's glass window allowing you to see inside, was especially pleasing to someone like me, who loves to look at the mechanics of things.

it was a great level and i'm really happy that this was made because of my contest. the only reason i gave it a 7/10 when i judged it was because the green and the yellow didn't sound quite right. but i still enjoyed it.

Thanks for a kinda words guys. I could have easily shrunk everything down to make it compact and easier to adapt, and then put it into a level. Then theres lots of different methods to get it to follow the player.

The best custom music following player I've seen implemented is in Deboerdave's levels. Definitely worth checking out.

I might think about making an interactive music based platformer.... maybe when you chain up combos or take certain paths the background music starts changing or become more dense.

I'll think about it.. but I have far too much on my plate with exams coming up and other projects.

Actually the pistons are always there (they are set to flipper back to the start, thus playing in a loop). Its the different coloured loops that emit. I just made it so it only emits the next one when the last one has got to the end. The old loop is dissolved a split second before this. Its not 100% perfect... was really tricky to get it running smoothly.

yes a system like that is sometimes hit and miss. I'm glad you weren't emitting the pistons because that would have stumped and confused me beyond my normal stumped and confused self. Really cool concept Pitcard! :)
