Firstly, strikethrough. Normally formatted under , this adds a line through the text. This is used for updating posts, eg:

Bugs to fix:

Meaning z is crossed out, meaning it's fixed. Should be easy to find, as most forums seem to have it.

snrm pointed out that we have it. Would be nice if it were [s] not [strike ] though, and if it were in the posting box.

Secondly, auto-merge. This would be that whenever someone double posts, the posts are automatically merged into one and a short note is left saying please don't double post (seen this done in vBulletin before)

Im totally for this so count this as my petition signature.

04-16-2009, 09:22 PM
We have a signature! I've accidentally used in three posts now.

04-16-2009, 09:23 PM
haha :) I'd love to use it for buglists like you said.

04-16-2009, 09:27 PM

Steeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-rike one!

Ahhhhhh! Funny watching you edit your post 5 times :P Should just be [s] though, to match [b ], [u ] etc.

EDIT: Well there's still auto-merge. Which would be great, because I sooo nearly double posted on this thread just now.

no strike is good. s is too i dont know not right i like strike.
Yeh i didnt think strike would work or somthing im not sure whatever :p

Auto-merge would be nice but we are actually allowed to double post if the 2 posts are between like 2 hours or somthing and it is stating a new idea or somthing entirely different from your previous post.

test test test

Mkay maybe the auto-merge is disabled after the threshold of, say, 2 hours?

04-16-2009, 09:55 PM
Well we know that works..

04-16-2009, 09:56 PM
CnP, why with the avatar?! You betrayed me! See the write a sentence post. No comments on the merge?

Auto merge is not a good suggestion in my humble opinion.

The "no double post" rule isn't to be taken only literally and I actually contributed into making it more open ('cause before it was litterally "no double post" before).

A "no double post" rule make sense because we don't want anybody spamming the forum for no reason or keeping a thread artificially afloat. But the thing is that THERE ARE situations where you might double post and that it's perfectly ok.

As an example, check my level suggestion thread. I suggest levels for people to play. If next week there's new suggestion to post, I WILL double post so people can see the thread again and realise there's new levels to try. I will not wait for someone to hazardeously post in the thread before refreshing it.

It's possible you want to bump a thread after a while 'cause people didn't answer a question or because you have something new and interesting to bring to the subject, to fuel disscussion. In that case you might double post too and it's perfectly fine.

All in all it's about reasonability. And there's some "case by case" to do before simply applying the rule blindly. Many laws in real life aren't applied blindy. Auto-merge would prevent the "no double post" rule moderation to be fair.

Ah, but you see, my addition of "until 2 hours difference between the double posts" would clear up your case, and almost all other legitimate ones. Before those two hours, it is more efficient and logical to edit (or, under my suggestion, merge)

Auto-merge? You can't post twice in 30 seconds already, so I don't see how we'd need that tool to be honest with you.

Uh... yeah.

Ranger is spot on with his explanation the actual rule is

4) On a related note, please avoid double posting. You may double post only if you have new, substantial information to add and you feel that it is necessary for others to see said new information. Laziness is not an excuse.

There is no two hour rule, the rule is Laziness is not excuse, which interpreted means that if you have just posted something in the past hour or so and remember something else you want to add then use the Edit button.

If it is substantial new information or a significant amount of time has passed (I would read this as a day or more) then by all means you may enter a new post.

As Ranger said the rule is there to prevent spamming and unnecessary bumping of posts, as long as you are doing the right thing there wont be any problem.

As for the strike through request I have no idea what you are actually requesting :) but CC will see this post and he can help you with that one.

RangerZero and QuozL already explained why we don't have an auto-merge, so I won't reiterate, but I will mention that at one time we did try an auto-merge addon. However, it proved to be too unforgiving and too rigid - a time limit is an interesting idea, but there are rare cases when you may need to double-post under the time limit given. We can be more forgiving and flexible when we make decisions on a case-by-case basis.

Also, I'll just set it up so [strike] and [s] both perform the same function.

EDIT: Done!

Indeed. I saw it after I did post...
