View Full Version : Little Big Podcast?

I don't know if this has been suggested on the forums, but I think this would be cool for the community. I happen to listen to podcasts all day at work. Helps my day fly by.

This would be a pretty neat idea. ^^ As a matter of fact, I had a similar idea for after LBP's release, in which, depending on what tools the game provides us with, we could make a machinima podcast using LBP as the medium. Hence my name for it - SackCast. :3

Whoa, this would be really awesome. However I think it should be done at least a month after the game's release so there's stuff to talk about. Maybe something every two weeks, talking about what the game could improve, things we'd like to see, awesome levels or stuff we've found, interviews, let it be with LPBCentral members or even Mm (wishful thinking?), funny experiences, a section where users submit their questions or just say hello, events that are going around the forums/site... Hahah. It'd be REALLY cool if it's organized well.

The machinima idea could even be done, too. I have a gadget that records any output (PS3) into my laptop (as well as another for my PC), so a podcast between 4 people sounds good. Make a "machinima" video version, and an mp3 version for those that listen to podcasts all day at work. d:

Wow, I got psyched just thinking about it...
If a few more people are up for it and have done anything like this before, I certainly wouldn't mind working on it with some of you. :] Of course, only if time and dedication takes part. Wouldn't want this to get forgotten after 2 months...

It'd be my chance to finally help out on the site. :(

Marino

I'd help out in anyway I can, but I'm not the greatest speaker. :p

I could submit content for the SackCasters to talk about, though. :)

aer0blue
08-28-2008, 03:35 PM
That would be great. The community could supply material and the casters could pick out the more interesting or important stuff.

I'm not sure how I do as a speaker, but I'd definitely give it my best shot!
What do you think lbp, CC?

ChazFox
08-28-2008, 03:39 PM
Personally I would also want to give SackCasting a shot. I've helped with speaking parts in podcasts in the past (in fact I co-host a podcast for a community I'm a member of XD), so it wouldn't be the first time I've done this sort of thing. :3 though if we're talking SackCast (yay, the name I made up on the spot is being used by other folks xD) then it would be the first time I've done that kind of thing in an environment like that. Looking forward to it though. :3

BTW, if this was a SackCast where the SackCasters actually played the game while talking, it would be great. Level Reviews would definately be more in-depth since you can actually SEE what the SackCasters are babbling on about. :arg:

There could be 3 regular SackCasters & one guest every (week?). That way, anyone can participate if chosen. It would be nice to get lbp & Cartman as guests too. :)

You should start a list of parts of the SackCast in the OP like Level Reviews, How-to-Create, ect.

This idea gets me really excited, thanks for bringing it up! :)

EDIT: Hm. Maybe we should hold auditions for voice talent? :p

ChazFox
08-28-2008, 03:49 PM
Well, if we're doing little voice acting parts like a Metal Gear Solid spoof, then sure, auditions for voice talent would be cool. But more important than voice acting is making sure that the people doing the Sackcast can talk in a clear and understandable voice. :D

Snarglegarf
08-28-2008, 03:57 PM
I would love to help in any way that I can. Being part of skits would be great.

I also liked the idea of doing level reviews, while said sackperson is within the level doing the review as he or she is going through it. That would be a great viewing experience. Adding upon the level thing, maybe there could be like a top 5 levels of the week as voted by the lbp central community.

Marino
08-28-2008, 04:03 PM
Hm. Although the SackCasters should be good speakers, I think it is more important that they are well known with-in the community.

Maybe we could come up with a list of Sackpeople that are willing to audition, meeting the criteria of them being well known of course, along with Sackpeople who do not want to actually speak, but rather be SackSubmitters, who submit content for the SackCast. I'd be on that list of course. :arg:

EDIT: I just found this forum on Voice Acting if you want to be a SackCaster:

Firstly, if we(they?) were to have level reviews, it wouldn't make much sense when turned into an mp3 version, I think, considering said listener will not be able to see the level. Then again, something can be worked around this.

Anyway, how would auditions for voice talent work and who would even judge them? Maybe hold a poll? But even then, polls only let you vote once for a person... It's not like you can give X a score of 7.6 and Y one of 8.0, so we have to think up of something. 3 'casters sounds about good. Actually, 4 are fine too. Not like guests are going to be in the whole cast--maybe a portion of it.

Although, say later on we have a "creator of the week" feature or something for the site. We may have an interview with said creator, asking about his/her influences for the level, why he/she did this and that, and so on. There's actually plenty to talk about if you think about it. Make it a meaty 1-hour bi-weekly episode, but like I said, would have to be at least a month or a few weeks after launch. I already have in mind what the first ep would be about!

But yeah, I'm very interested in this. Like I said, I want to be able to help the community out. Hoping the community would consider me. ;)

Well, when I was mentioning SackCasting, I meant a Video Podcast (or Vodcast, or Webisode, I have no idea what the slang term for Video Podcasts is anymore), made using LBP, if they included a feature that allowed us to record video, save and edit it, then upload it to someplace like Youtube. So if we were doing a "Level of the week/month/whatever" feature, we could probably either include that in a small segment, or we could have it feature as the location for the entire episode. I can already imagine it: "Hi there, this is the LBPC SackCast team, reporting live from Meerkat Cave!" (Just using an example is all. XD)

Ah! Got an even better idea. We could make it like a news show, where we have a little News Studio type room, and have one or more reporters (either a regular or a guest) exploring the featured level and giving their thoughts. :D

Marino
08-28-2008, 05:59 PM
Haha, we can build a LittleBigNewsStudio. I don't know a lot about News Studios but I will edit this post with some ideas of what can be in it. :arg:

EDIT: We can either make a level, like I said before, or the reporting can be done in the Pod (Spaceship HUB).

We don't need that feature. Like I mentioned previously, I have a video capture the device for my laptop and PC. I can directly record what happens on my PS3 to my Lappy. Great quality too. Then the video can be edited, uploaded anywhere, etc. So in shorts, the tools are here and available.

Anyway, I like the news show deal. That's pretty cool! Place stickers from snapshots and stuff... Really nice.

EDIT: Yeah, Marino... The ship thing works fine, too. "So here we see this level, this and that... Now let's jump into the level and take a closer look!"

Ooh, a ship would be a pretty sweet idea. ^^ I've been looking for a video capture device myself, but no luck so far. Even if I did find one I would have no idea how to use it.

For a PC or a laptop? For a PC you can do it via your video card. Most video cards nowadays allow users to use this feature. Laptop, a TV-tuner card on ebay or something. If you ever get one and need some help, be sure to ask me.

Anyway, still waiting on lbp or CC to give word on this, so we can organize. :]

Sounds like a great idea to me. They tried to start something similar on LittleBigFan some time ago, but it never quite came together.

As far as video vs. audio, some of the recent Criterion podcasts showed a way to do both. Just edit out the videocentric portions for the audio version (e.g. if it's a level review, do the spoken impressions from the crew first. Then do the run-through, but edit that part out of the audio version).

Great ideas guys! I have just one question... how do you use podcasts? I've had a look at the section in Itunes but i don't know how to listen to them. Also aeroblue does your magic video capture thing record sound as well? If it does, and you can use mics in-game that could be an easy way for voices to be done.

Great idea. I'd be willing to work as either a Sackcaster, producer on the show, or a level reviewer.

I have experience managing projects in the real world, as well as clans and communities online, so I can make sure it sticks to a schedule, and has tons of content.

I'll get into details on my ideas if this idea comes about.

Positions will come up slowly, such as video editing. Maybe have a sort of intro, like GameTrailer does for it's trailers?

Hopefully, this would come out good and complete. Anyway, yeah, it could just be edited out and the audio could be "ripped" from the video cast. It shouldn't be complicated.

True, Marino. I guess we don't, but it'd be nice to see what they think. After all, it would be the LBPCentral SackCast, would it not? xD And regarding server space or bandwith, everyone could pitch in a little for the 'cast video/audio files. Either that, or Rapidshare or some other free file hosting program.

Yes, it records both sound and video. And yes, you can use mics in game. That's the whole idea! The Sackboy's lips even move when you speak, so it'd be great.

Well, the program will need a lot of people to do research (researchers, assistant producers) to help find content, advertisers who promote the podcast (respectfully of course, no spamming), an editor, graphics (for video podcasts mostly. On screen graphics for level reviews, names, etc.), and a technical director to bring it all together so it works.

There is tons of work that goes into producing a quality, entertaining program even as short as 30 minutes. I have no doubt that there will be plenty of jobs for everyone who wants them. Some people will likely do multiple jobs, but again, there is a ton of stuff that goes into this.

I'd be willing to lead this project, because I think I have the knowledge and experience to see it through, plus I can probably throw a little money at it if we have a solid project.

Sounds like a lot of work. ... It's exciting, really! Personally, I think you should take the top lead on this. You seem to know what you're talking about and said you have experience, so...

I'd certainly love to be a 'caster, though. Or level reviewer. Knowing me, my reviews will be big and meaty. >;D lol.

Yup, it is a lot of work. My gaming community and I were going to start a videogame internet radio show. We had a ton of ideas, but not enough experience to get it off the ground. As that was more than 6 years ago, I've learned a lot since then :)

Also, don't think that if we are a go for this thing that we won't be starting right away, it will take awhile to find people to do jobs, nail down a running time, what tech we are using, etc. That way, when the game is released, all the behind the scenes stuff is figured out.

Anyway, i'll wait for lbp to weigh in on this. If he gives us the approval to go ahead with the idea as an LBPC project, then cool. If not, I can do it completely seperate without the LBPC attachment (I would prefer it to be an LBPC production)

We got lucky there.. Wow! :p

I would love to work on a Section of the show about creating machines. Maybe someone could have a Section about creating costumes & another

My Section could be called 'Marino's Machines & Mechanics' or something similar. :)

Yeah, Harrisment...I know it'll take a bit. Just like Mm, taking our time to prepare and do something GOOD... Not mediocre. After all, this is something that will be seen not only by the LBPC community, but all LBP fans interested. Of course, as you said, it's best to wait on lbp's thoughts on it. I wouldn't be surprised if he mentions something about the bandwith like I said before, which could be easily resolved, anyhow. But yeah, I'd like it to be an official LBPC production, too. d:!

Marino, that'd be cool, really. Maybe have like another section for minigames. Top 3 minigames found or something, every 2-3 weeks when the ep goes out. :]

EDIT: Hey, maybe we could even get a separate spot on the forums for the SackCast, eh? xD Who knows!

Well, I wouldn't know how to do it using a video card. (I assume you mean a graphics card, as the PC I have has a Geforce 8600). All I see here are 2 DVI sockets, so I don't know what all I would need to do in order to use my video card for recording.

I'm sure he'll read this thread, or CC will and get ahold of him.

If I were to lead this project, I would envision a closed production. What I mean by this is that the show staff would produce the show from a private forum (just a new category, not a whole seperate forum) that only the site admins and the podcast staff can access.

Suggestions and news for the podcast would take place in the respective forums we already have (show suggestions in this forum, show news in site news).

About sections of the show, I will be honest. It probably won't be ideal to have individualized sections for certain members, or even certain gameplay elements. This is especially true for an audio only broadcast, which is what this will all probably start out as.

The best way to run a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly show would be to stick to a particular format every time. For instance:

Intro
News and Notes
Focused topic of discussion
Reviews
Listener/Viewer email or wrap up
Outtro

Focused topics of discussion can be a big news item involving the game, an interview, or discussing a particular gameplay element.

If you listen to the PSNation podcast, you'll find they have a similar (but more relaxed, they have a few shows under their belts which allows for flexibility) format to the one above.

While I don't have much time to say produce or edit the show, I will give you guys a prime spot on the site, provide a private forum if need be, and provide any resources that I'm able to. I'm 100% behind this if that's what the community wants and you guys want to give this a shot. I would absolutely support this if you guys spent the time to do this. I'd prefer it be a vodcast, as Aero said he has the ability to record. In all honesty, you guys should have 4-8 people tops, otherwise it might be too much. You could easily switch off on features; just have 4 of you do one, then another 4 do another, ect. Also, try to get some varying opinions, as everyone constantly agreeing with each other isn't that entertaining.

That's cool, CC. Both the admins support it, so I suppose that's a green light to it! And yeah, regarding the vidcast, we've talked about it.
