This will be one of the first things I attempt to build in LittleBigPlanet. I don't really plan much, but I found an awesome(and easy to understand) description of how a trebuchet operates:

Trebuchet Basics

http://www.redstoneprojects.com/trebuchetstore/figure_1_trans.GIF

A trebuchet consists of five basic parts: the frame, counterweight, beam, sling and guide chute.

The frame supports the other components and provides a raised platform from which to drop the counterweight.

The counterweight, pulled by gravity alone, rotates the beam. The beam pulls the sling.

The guide chute guides the sling through the frame and supports the enclosed projectile until acceleration is sufficient to hold it in the sling.

The sling accelerates and holds the projectile until release.

How the Beam Accelerates the Projectile

http://www.redstoneprojects.com/trebuchetstore/figure_2_trans.GIF

One end of the sling is fixed to the end of the beam, while the other is tied in a loop and slipped over a release pin extending from the end of the beam. As the beam rotates, it pulls the sling, with its enclosed projectile, down the guide chute. As the sling exits the chute, it accelerates in an arc away from the beam, but because the beam is still pulling the sling behind, the loop is held on the pin.

How the Sling Releases the Projectile

http://www.redstoneprojects.com/trebuchetstore/figure_3_trans.GIF
The sling continues accelerating through its arc until it eventually swings ahead of the release pin. At this point, known as the release angle, the loop slips off the pin and the sling opens...

...Releasing the Projectile

Now, I'm excited to try different things in the trebuchet. Maybe even a little sackboy cylinder that encases your sackboy(much like a hamster ball) and flings you across the map. I don't really know how this would be useful, but I'd be surprised if it wasn't insanely fun. :)

Neat idea Cartman...Neat idea indeed. I could've sworn someone mentioned it to me before though...hmm >_>

:p I wouldn't mind launching a Stix-Vision across a few levels!

Here's an idea...perhaps you can "glue" keys to other levels (using dark matter) really high up in your Trebuchet level, and when you launch your Sackboy, he will be "thrown" across to another level!

Thanks for this. I was planning on drawing out my plans for my trebuchet tomorrow, this should help immensely :). Cheers.

Very nicely mocked-up there. I think this should work a treat. :)

I'm really excited to try this. There's other catapults out there that I want to try as well, but this will be my first. I also want to try this kind of catapult:

I'll probably make a catapult pack for you guys if you're interested.

That would be awsome, I look forward to it. I think you should make a catapult attached to some sort of vehicle.

I'd really like to see how this idea works out... I mean, it seems like it'll function well... Depends on how strings will work, though.

Awesome idea. You ever play Medieval: Total War? Trebuchet = awesome.

No, I haven't. I've seen a trebuchet in action in real life, though, and they're crazy.

EDIT: Here's a youtube video of one in action:

 I made one of those in Basic tech design/drawling in 9th grade

LOL "Rich English Guy"

Ballistas are also worht a mention here, since this thread seems to be based on seige weapons. Its one of the basics (Like a giant crossbow I guess)

With LBP's 2.5D physics, I'm not sure how visually accurate I could construct this. I'm sure I could make the same concept, but it would have to be adapted for LittleBigPlanet. I imagine the crossbow string turned sideways. It would function the same, but it would fit more accurately into LBP's world.
