View Full Version : New ModNation Racers Site --CONCEPT--

Hey guys! We've got a new idea up our sleeves, but before we go into detail, be sure you've watched this video (http://e3.g4tv.com/videos/38760/Sonys-ModNation-Racers-Demo-at-E3-2009/).

Alright, are you finished? Good, then we can start: we are considering (read: considering) launching a new site based around ModNation Racers. If we do so, it will be it's own site with it's own dedicated vBulletin software (vBulletin is the forum software we use here as well). We will support it just as we do with LBP, and I (ConfusedCartman) will personally oversee both sites just as I am doing with LBPCentral. We'd do contests, have a "Track Showcase", do some sort of "Track Spotlight", and probably do a bunch of unique stuff as well. We'd love to support it if you guys are interested, and we're willing to spend the money to do so, but we need to gauge your interest first. Answer the poll above and, if you'd like, reply with your thoughts as well. Even if you disagree with the whole idea, we want to know, so don't hesitate. Thanks!

I'm am all for this!

But definitely have a different header colour, instead of blue have an opposite color. This is quite cool with websites that are almost about the same things, and are run by the same people, as its a way of telling which is which.

Hm, I was thinking more along the lines of a sub-section in this site, like an area here where there are 4-5 forums dedicated to this in one forum group... Like "Track Showcase", "General MNR Discussion". Some general info like you'd find in these forums but, well, here.

I put I don't really no because, well, I don't really know . If you do I'd go there too... But I was thinking more along the lines of a mini forum here...

LBPCentral -> MNRCentral?

I'd like a new forum, but if people would prefer to have it as a sub-section of this site then i guess that would work

If there was a new site i think some racing themed banners would be cool - similar to what we have here :p

Actually a cooler thing, if possible, would be to combine certain parts of the forum, such as off topic discussions, (Movies, Other Games, Artwork and Creativity, and Social Groups) so if you click on that link its still in the same forum, but the threads are on both websites.

That might be either hard to do or impossible to do at the start, but if it could be done, then it would be easier in the long run.

Oh, definitely - we'd probably use the base style we're using now, then revamp it. Like I said, this is still all preliminary - we don't even own a domain name yet, so it will take a while before we'll have anything to show for it.

A mini-forum is too confusing - it's a whole separate game, and while it may be simpler than LBP (it's too early to tell) it would demand too many things to integrate with the LBP content we already have. Not to mention the entirely different audience it would attract. It's just too different.

I'll look into it, but I'm not promising anything - I'm not even sure I want to do that. Give me some time to sit on it and see what seems best.

Yeah, I see what you mean CC... I would probably want it... It's more my doubts about the creative possibilities of MMR... Still, seems intriguing. :)

I'll leave my vote as that, not only cause I can't change it, but because I'm not too sure really . I'll register there if it does happen, but yeah...

Also... I wonder... would this be up by the 29th?! I dunno, I just want it by then or so... cause that's our two year anniversary :O

... which reminds me... I wonder if we can make any birthday presents for the site... lol

That's also one of the factors affecting our decision - if the Creation isn't deep enough, we may not support it. Also, no, I don't expect it to be up in less than a month. It's going to take a good deal of work before we have something ready for regular use.

I have to be honest, I'm not really interested in MNR, but I think the game is a good concept and I hope it succeeds. Similarly, I'm not really interested in a website for the game, but I do think it might be a good idea to make one.

Something that I feel will either make or break any potential MNR community is whether the company behind the game is as dedicated and open as MM have been for LBP. Although I have to admit, if it wasn't for LBPC I probably wouldn't be playing LBP anymore.

This site rocks, and I'm sure if/when an MNR sister site is set up, it'll rock too. :)

I'm excited about the potential for MNR, but part of what makes lbp good is you can build a story, or something interactive and unique. This is purely racing as far as I can tell...but we'll have to wait and see...I might change my mind...

I agree with this too. Immediately I noticed that you can't do things like deisign your own buildings and scenery... heck you couldn't even place an individual TREE where you want, only clusters of trees. The customization in the game IS lacking but it would still be a fun game.

I wonder how large you can make the tracks?

Well I didn't see anything like a thermometer there, but there was an outside boundary of mountains that he didn't build...so I'd imagine as much as you can fit within the boundaries preconstructed

Keep in mind, this is an early demo - there's about a year between now and its scheduled release, so there's a lot that can change. Plus, they also mentioned they have a bunch of stuff they haven't shown yet, so here's hoping you can get really deep into the Creation.

Aw man a year :( ? I didn't read about the release date and I was getting so excited about the game, guess I should tone that excitement down a little. I really hope the creation is as deep or close to LBPs creation. A racing version of LBP just seems so right to me.

It costs us $180 per vBulletin installation, not counting the hundreds (if not thousands) we've spent overall paying for hosting, site features, etc. Promising to support every Play. Create. Share. game that releases is financial suicide for me. Plus, even if this "genre" does take off like Sony wants it to, I don't think one central hub is the right way to go. As you can obviously see, this new PCS idea will spread across many gaming genres, so it doesn't really make sense to encompass every fansite in a single network.

I see your point, well you could create a twitter account with the name ModNationRacersCentral and if you don't carry on with the idea and somebody else wants the name you could just sell it to them easy money:p

I think this is a game to watch out for and yes I would be interested in that new forum when the game comes out.

BUT, I think we really don't know much about this game. It might be the next "play, create, share" genre game but the conference didn't show us any kind of depth that LittleBigPlanet is actually having.

So, what we don't know right now is if this game is interesting enough and will let our creativity flow enough so a community could grow out of this, like here with LBP.

You're right, we don't. However, this is the kind of thing that needs long-term planning - I don't want it to seem thrown-together at the last minute, so I've got to be thinking ahead. Part of that process is understanding what the interest in the site would be, so here we are.

And its actually smart of you. Don't worry, I like the fact you spotted this game. I did too. I will keep track of it until it comes out. I just hope the mechanics of the game are cool and that there will be ways to diversify the tracks. What they showed there is basically just their "scenery creator".

I think it should be done, because ModNation sounds like a great game, that's very in tune with what's going on here already.

Sounds like a great idea.

PS. If you do it, I should get to be a ModNation Mod xD

EDIT: I said this in another thread, but, if anyone isn't convinced by ModNation Racers (or even if you are) then you should definately check out "TrackMania Nations: Forever" on Steam. It's free, tons of fun and has a built in level editor. From what I've seen, ModNation is more in depth than this, and you should see some of the tracks people have built. There are also ways of customizing your car (painting directly on it, etc).
Seriously, it's free. Try it. I believe there is also a paid version, but I'm not really sure what that offers.

I imagine we will end up owning this game (my son, who LOVES racing games, will surely want it), and so a site devoted to it will eventually become beneficial.

The game looks really cool and I'm happy to see the PCS concept blossoming. But... my guess is that it will not have anywhere near the genre-crossing, generation-gapping magic that LBP possesses.

What would be amazing (scratch that.. WILL be amazing, as I have no doubt we are headed there at some time in the future) would be a cross between LBP's and MNR's create and play styles. Think how handy that broad brush stroke would be in LBP. Or NPCs with some degree of AI (haven't you wished you could throw in an NPC sack-boy to interact with your players in your levels??). I believe this is the future as evidenced by videos such as this. But I seriously doubt this game will break any records.

But... don't expect me to be disappointed if I'm wrong. :)

I voted I don't know, I suppose I'll have to see how deep the create mode is first. It looked like he was just using brushes and painting the landscape, it depends how many cool tools there are to use in the tracks and just how much you can change things. Create Mode and the amount of variety you and other people can create has whats kept me intrested in LBP and this site for so long.

It does look intresting though, I'll be keeping an eye it.

I doubt that I would be interested at least at this point. When it comes to racing games, I am more into PC sims like GTR2, GTR evolution, iRacing, etc..

It's gonna be fun...I could see a community cropping up around it, but I have NO interest in it. It is my experience that cart style games although addicting and competitive rarely last very long in strong rotation among my games... LBP is a residence. it has a strong foundation... I see modnation as an ever changing tent-city of squatters.

Also, I see the create in this game being very limited... It's more play. customize. share. then create. I mean designing race tracks, even cart tracks, seems a little limiting to me right from the get go!

Also, I may be wrong but cart style games generally draw from an even younger audiences pool than say LBP... These patrons attention span and dedication to a positive community might be deemed somwhat, ...immature? Couple that with the fact that everyone, because the nature of the game is to compete and WIN!, is in direct competition with everyone... well sounds like a rather volatile place to me... good luck mod-ing that. Oh... I can see the 'cool pages' now.

In all honestly, you can Pull this off CC, BUT....what if you are too busy with one site? you'll need to concentrate on one site to fully upgrade it to the best site of LBP/ or Modnation racers if you prefer that one.

OR you can manage both at the same time really well.
either way, if it comes, I'll join it just for the forum, because most LBPC users will head there aswell for the forum :)

To be honest I don't like this idea. I think it would result in LBPCentral losing attention from the admins, but most of all the game just looks like a racing version of LittleBigPlanet, but with limited create possibilities - I don't think you could go very far with the game.

I am interested in the game but I can't see myself signing up to a fan website of it. However a sub-section on this site might attract me - its easier for everyone too!

rtm223
06-04-2009, 05:00 PM
There seems to be a lot of naysaying here. I didn't think that LBP create would be as open and extensive as it is, until I actually got involved with it. And it wasn't until after ditching it and coming back that I actually realised what could be done (my AND gate revalation). I wouldn't have guessed so much could be implemented in a simple platformer game.... So yeah I wouldn't guess that much could be implemented in a simple kart racing game, but I'm not gonna be so hasty on this one. We will have to see.

Also, I don't see why CC and the mods wouldn't be able to manage two forum sites, they are a competant team. There are many forums out there far bigger than this that get managed just as well and the two sites would draw a slightly different crowd, with slightly different overlapping communities so possibly slightly different mods, depends how CC wants to run it.

I'd say sub-section, not quite as huge as LBP ^_^

Theap Pleman
06-04-2009, 05:06 PM
I'm with rtm223 on this one...sort of. The create mode of MNR could be quite expansive, but as I said before, part of what makes LBP what it is is the ability to build a story, or a unique contraption, and MNR is so far, just racing. Maybe through the settings you could form a kind of story, but more info on create mode is necessary to see if this game is truly worthy of my attention.

Killian
06-04-2009, 05:30 PM
There are many problems with a sub-section.

The first, and most obvious, is the site name. LBPCentral is already an established LittleBigPlanet fan site. If you Googled ModNation Racers, looking for a place to answer your questions for example, you aren't going to click on a fansite dedicated to LBP rather than many of the other sites that are sure to pop up.

Another is the style of the forums. The look of the site, and all of its features, are designed for LBP. Things such as LittleBigExperience, the shop, and every other aspect of the site is dedicated to LBP. Banners that combine MNR and LBP with a LBPCentral logo slapped on the side would look terrible. The site would have to undergo huge changes to cater for both of these games.

User convenience is another issue. If I went to a fansite dedicated to Infamous, I wouldn't want to have Prototype screenshots jumping out at me, I wouldn't want to have news about Prototype clustering up pages, and I certainly wouldn't want to have to put up with a Prototype themed interface all just because the two are similar games.

There are so many more reasons why this just wouldn't work.

The reason this thread exists is to discover if there is support for the setting up of a new website. Even if every member voted Yes! and posted in this this thread ranting on about their support, it wouldn't be definite. Fan support is just one of the aspects that affects the decision. As many of you said, we need to see if there is a deep enough experience in the game to form a lasting community such as the LBP one.

I don't really care about the create mode in this game, the racing sounds and looks awesome.

However, I accidentally clicked yes when I was meant to vote for "no", because quite honestly, the whole site wouldn't go very far in my opinion, and it wouldn't work the same way that this site does.

This game looks very interesting, and it looks like it could be very cool, but I'm not sure if I'd want to join the site yet. From that demo/thing it looked like the create mode in Modnation Racers could be much more limited then LBP's, and for me that'd be a very big dissapointment. You also probably couldn't make the sorts of genre-bending, epic-storyline-containing things you can do on LBP. The create mode on Modnation Racers does seem like it'll be much more easier to get a hang of then LBP's though. I'm going to be keeping a close eye on Modnation Racers as well, but I can't say for certain that'll I'll be joining a site dedicated to the game.

I think, in the end, it will really depend on whether ModNation ends up being as deep an experience as LittleBigPlanet is - honestly, if I had been asked if I would be part of a LittleBigPlanet forum I would have said no way.... but then I experienced the game and realized the depth of the things you could create - will ModNation REALLY create as deep an experience as LBP, or will it always be pretty much the same game.... but with different tracks?

It's the creation of different unique genres that really pushes LBP.

I personally enjoy any game that has an 'editor' but the fact remains that LBP has held my attention and interest far longer (and with greater intensity) than any of the others. I like racing games but the 'feel' of the handling is so very important to me.

I also agree it will most certainly attract a younger crowd. I don't think this is bad...it just wouldn't be a place I would hang out...but I'm older than your avg. gamer.

If the tools are as expansive and the gameplay as good as LBP then I'm sure I would like it. That doesn't mean I would personally seek out a place to chat about it.

I came here to find answers to questions and found a 'support' group. None of my friends have LBP so they totally don't get why I am constantly talking about it.

Just my thoughts though! :)

Yeah... thinking about it, making a new domain for each PCS game may be too expensive, considering that Sony wants to make it into a genre, so we can probably expect more...

But yeah, I doubt you can make this the same as LBP... in LBP, heck, you already can make racing levels! Not as good as an actual racer, but still... I can't see you being able to make "adventures" in this game...

First of all.... I really DON'T want to see this as part of this site.

As for the game, I really can't say whether I'll pick it up or not (on the off-chance that it might be as addictive as LBP... I just don't have that much free time). I think it's a great looking game and has some great potential, so I think regardless of how many of us would jump on board you should probably go ahead and set up your site. I'm sure you would do well with a site dedicated to the game, especially as this will draw in a whole different crowd than lbp.

When I first saw the video yesterday I could have sworn they were advertising for a PSN game. That's not necessarily a bad thing in and of itself, but it just felt to limited in scope to me to be a fully fledged super release game. Although the creation tool looks easy to use and relatively powerful, it also seemed limited in scope. It's hard to tell a story just by racing around a track or designing a different character or car. Finally, I'm not a huge driving fan. Certainly, I occassionally dabble in the genre, but am by no means a hard core fan.

As many others have said, I think it's a case of wait and see. For the moment though I would not be hugely interested in a whole new forum dedicated to this game. It could make a valid subforum section, though I understand that it would be different enough to justify it's own area. But whether it's big enough, in terms of size, scope, customisation and content, to justify a completely different forum? Well, for me personally, I do not think so.

Those views are me speaking as a member rather than a moderator of this LBP site. But that's what is being asked for, different people's opinions. :)

People are wondering about customization...

1. It was just a 5 minute demo.
2. There seemed to be many other options
3. The last time a racing game had a story, it failed horribly.

The game looks awesome, I'd get it and join a fansite for sure!

I would join the site and support it :)

I've always loved racing games and creating, so this should be right up my street.

I'm a bit worried like others that tracks will be too similar if we are not given the right options through tools. But like many others have said, we just need to wait and see.

But when I joined LBPC (agaes before the game was out) there were hardly any members and it was sometimes some of the most exciting times I have had on here. Everyone trying to find out info every day and any little snippit of info got us all excited. When it first was revealed it did not have many of the features it has today and it progressed all the time. Once upon a time LBP didn't have mag switches and we were all still excited about the game. Can you imagine lbp now without mag switches and all the things that probably couldn't be done without them.

Basically this game is still in developement and I'm sure they showed it now to get the same kind of feedback that MM got from sites like ours :)
And if they are anything like MM they will be listening to the comunities that spring up to see what people want in the game.
This game could quite easily evolve into something as rich in contenet and allow people to express themselves just as much as LBP.

Time will only tell, and I'm willing to give it a chance with anticipation and an open mind.

Yes, that and it's not even out yet.

LBP looked stupid too.

Anyone remember this?

Are you kidding? Was this during the Beta? I would have been bored stiff in create without mag switches. The point that I designed an AND gate from first principles was what got me hooked.

I'm pretty sure Dorien's talking about the first few time LBP was shown, where everyone was in awe. The game barely had any switches back then, and people still loved it.

Anyway, I'm glad to see so many people are interested...because I am, too.

I am totally up for this! This game looks about equivalent to LBP except for obviously it's racing. I'm so excited for both this site and game! :)

Yep, that's exactly what I was talking about.

Every time there was a new show like E3/TGS/GDC....etc there was always something new to see and the way MM built up the excitement was amazing.
One time it would be emitters then the jetpack the mag switches...etc.

If this game manages to build on what they have and listen to the community like MM did then it could be quite special.
And Iím sure Sony will be pushing them to develop the game in a similar way from what they have learned from their experiences with MM.

From what I saw in the vid it looks a lot more like creating in Far Cry than LBP at the moment.
And people were saying about that you could only place loads of trees at once instead of individual trees. Well remember the dude made the brush huge to make it quicker to build a level. I'm pretty sure if you decrease the brush to it's minimum then it will allow you to place things individually.

The only thing I don't like atm is that you place the track down by driving about:grr:. I want to have more control than that in where my track goes. Hopefully there will be a more advance way to set out your track as well. So they have an easy way for pick up and play peeps but others that demand more control can always use the more advance option.
They could even implement some sort of corner editing tool  where you could just drive around to place track and then use the corner editor to refine the track the way you want :)

Make the site now CC......Writing this is getting me all excited lol:D:D:D

Ah right, I thought you meant in versions of the game that was available to the public. This makes more sense :)

Something I was wondering, based on the fact people are saying it will be limited to just racing...

There is no reason why you would have to make a "track" per se, with a start and a finish... this opens up the oppourtunities for all manner of vehicle simulations, which in LBP are pretty weak (yes I appreciate the mechanics of the tanks and mechs etc but the gameplay really isn't great). SO yeah I'll be watching this keenly.

Or it could turn out to be anouther spore (please don't be another spore).

Yeah I was thinking like that too.

I would love it if you could make a driving adventure in this game.

It would be great if they had a kind of magic mouth tool to create a story and could you imagine if they had some sort of switches like a mag switch type of thing that could could attach to the objects you place on the track. Then you could make puzzles and mini games where you have to collect objects and bring them back to a location you set.
And things like race gates you have to go through.

This game could be awesome if they start thinking of letting the community create things that the game isn't obviously aimed at and it would open up the diversity of the levels you would see.

Which is exactly what they've been done with LBP. Wexfordian's last level was so far from a little kiddie platformer it's unreal.

I tihnk mag switches and prox's are a must in this game. Also if the weapons start becoming more interactive, with the scenery and suchlike, it should be good.

I may have to quit my job if I'm to keep up with two creator mode games though. I think when / if the site goes up, I'll prob join, as a gateway to pre-release info and see where that goes.

Yeah, this game will definatley build up like LBP. I wonder what's going to be added later, because right now it looks just a pinch limited. I'm going to burst from excitement though, make the site! :p

EDIT: As a matter of fact i'm so excited i'm going to watch the video again! :)

I'm sure that the visuals and physics would both have to be toned down - if they could manage it well, then I'd obviously support it, but I would hate for the core of the game to be lost due to the limitations on the PSP.

Well for a racing game I thought that was quite a lot of customization, but therein lies the problem: For A Racing Game. It feels like it would have to be limited since it is a racing game.

LBP is a platform game. BUT also a racing, shooter, mini game, calculator.......etc.

Give us the tools and we'll make it what we want. Forget the fact your in a car and then your just a character moving around in a 3D space and the game can be what you want it to be :)

While I could see myself picking up this game at some point, it doesn't look complex enough (nothing interactive like switches, pistons, motorbolts) to justify discussing it online, so I voted no.

Interested, but is it not too early? If you had read through the entire thread, you would find that it takes a lot of time to set up a fan site. This one was set up several months, I think possibly even a year before LBP was released publically.

Setting up the servers and forums and additional features and so on takes time. What CC is trying to find out is whether it would be worthwhile to take the time to do so, and whether the people here would be interested in such a site.

A year and a few months in fact. ... Come to think of it... our 2nd birthday is in 16 days!

I am excited for this game and will be joining the site when possible. It looks like it will be a lot of fun...Then maybe we will get less racing levels on LBP and more levels with good stories and gameplay. Not that I don't like racing levels, but I mean when they get 100s of thousands of plays with little effort and nice, detailed levels only get a couple thousand, i think we have a problem.

I just have to say that if Sony is pushing this game in their new genre, I think we can expect some amazing things from it. The E3 video was brief and showed very little in the customization area, but think about it. They have almost another year to work on this title and the options could really become quite deep. Because it will be solely based on racing, they can really run with it and end up with some deeply customizable features. If you saw the video over at GameSpot's site, you can see track editing options like banking, width, etc and I can only imagine all the other things they're planning on including. I am all for this game and the new site. I predict it's going to be a pretty big deal. Now we just wait for new info/screens/features/vids to be released....
