What do you guys think of the band?

When I started getting into Metal (around the same time I got GH2 :p) I liked Metallica, but after honing my guitar and drum skills and listening to bands like Tool and Megadeth, I realized they really aren't that good. Their songs have pretty unoriginal riffs, Lars is a crappy drummer, Kirk Hammet is a mediocre guitar player and all his solos are pretty much the same, and I'm tired of noob kids who only know Enter Sandman and Battery because they're on videogames.

Well, the most important thing to realize here is that everything said in this thread is going to be an opinion, it's all subjective.

I do agree with you on some points. I wouldn't say Lars sucks, sure he's not the best but he doesn't suck. And also you cant compare the technical expertise really otherwise you are going to miss out on some good bands.

Example, Nirvana's riffs are usually quite simple but they are catchy and cool. I actually happen to really like the older Metallica's guitar parts. I think they're rhythm / lead in some songs are just beautiful. Like "One," or "Fade To Black." And ya, Kirk deff isn't the best either and ya he does have a lot of similar solos. He almost always does this one bend where the "b" string is held stationary and you hit the "d" and bend it up. He does that like three times pretty quickly.

And seems to always do a triplet pentatonic pattern (from beginning to end). I would agree I think they do lack some creativity, although they had quite a bit it just seems they are limited. But I wouldn't say they suck

I'll agree with you that they are about average musicians and they do have pretty basic riffs, but if you look at it from the sound of their songs, I think they're (mostly) awesome. So, forgetting how hard the songs are to play, 'Master of Puppets' and 'Ride The Lightning' are my favourites (both have basic riffs). It's not because of video games that I like Metallica either; I (personally) think that Enter Sandman is a good song, but over-rated.
I have heard before about them using parts from other musicians songs but I don't know much about that.

Oh mate! I feel so sorry for you. Seriously

It souns like you are heading down a slippery slope towards a phenomenon I like to call "Metal Musician Snobery Syndrome". MMSS often afflicts talented muscisians who start getting into metal and start noticing the wealth of staggering technical talent that exists in metal music. Blown away by this they start looking for more technical stuff and honing their own skills. All of this is fine - improving your skills is a good thing and I commend you. But you've gone a step further and are starting to talk like technical expertise is what makes music is about. You carry on down this slope and you will end up like a couple of my friends, who are unable to listen to anything that isn't technical metal.

They are missing out. Music is an art form, and it's unbelieveable varied. Some of the most artistic music out there is really simple and basic, that's how art works. If you strip an art form down to technical evaluation, you lose all of the beauty of it - you may as well be writing an equation. As hamsalad said, you are the one who going to miss out.

I think metallica as a band are pretty good. Their songs sound kinda cool and they sure as hell do know how to put on a good show. I've never been a major fan and they probably are overrated. But remember why you used to enjoy the sound of their music, and stop picking it apart. Oh and stop exaggerating, they definately don't "suck" :p

You forget that technical skill can also form originality. Plus, I don't hate Metallica because they're bad at their instruments. I think their riffs are unoriginal. I don't hate music because of simplicity, except rap, and I like music because of how hard it is to play. I also like Iron Maiden, but Niko McBrain or whatever is a pretty mediocre drummer himself, although his fills are pretty good. It's just Lars plays almost the same thing in every song. I would say that technically, And Justice for All is their best album (or at least Lars's) but I still hate it.

How about you start reading posts? I never said they suck. I said they aren't that good. Especially not as good as people make them out to be. I like the sound of music. I like Tool because they sound very unique, like a weirder version of Alice in Chains. My favorite songs are their most simple songs.

The Four Horsemen
Fade to Black
For Whom The Bell Tolls
Sanitarium
Call of Ktulu.

I never said they suck. There is nothing special about them, though, however they did influence a lot, and I'll give them that. If anything, I just really hate Lars and how he talks like everything he says is the most important thing ever.

I am now at the stage where i prefer them to Maiden, and that's saying something. Never insult them again! >_<

'nuff said.

I mean, you can call them over-rated or whatever you want to say, but that does not take away from the fact they ARE one of the biggest bands in the world. And i'm sorry, but you can't get to that point by being overrated with a crappy drummer, average guitarists and boring riffs.

YOU don't see anything in them, but i guess the millions of fans would see it differently?

And so what if the 'noob kids' only know 2 songs? if it get's them into Metallica and other similar music where is the problem in that? My first Metallica song i liked was Enter Sandman. I now have every album they have ever made, along with about 35 live albums i got from livemetallica.com.

Chill out mate, if you read back my post it's not all that critical of you and I have no intention of having a fight with you (I won't be here to respond even if I did). It's a far more general critisism of how people become when they start being really snobbish about these things. And you sounded a little snobbish, saying you're tired of people who are exactly how you were 2 (3?) years ago. Will you be tired of people who are like yourself now, in two years time?

As I said, metallica aren't the most amazing band in the world but they aren't boring. At worst they are a bit samey. You used to like the sound of their music before you picked it apart, is what I infer from your comments. Does it actually sound different now? Or are you just breaking it down more?

I also don't really think that the personality of an artist should influence your opinion of their art, even if he is an arrogant tossbag! I understand that comment may have just been a sindnote, I don't know if it is part of your changed attitiude towards the band.

And I'm sorry I used the word "suck" - I paraphrased :p

No, my tastes changed. Bush is simple too but I like them. Think about it: I liked them when I first got into metal. It's like if you ate poop all your life you would like poop until you tried some cheese and you would think cheese is better. If you know about Dave Mustaine, you would know that I certainly don't like him for his personality.

The noob kids I'm talking about act like they like Metallica but still don't know any of the songs. They've been calling themselves fans for the whole school year. One time I asked this kid what his favorite Metallica song was and he said Enter Sandman. I asked him if he knew any others and he said no. And now that RB2 came out his favorite song is Battery. These aren't kids who just like Enter Sandman, they say they like Metallica but they don't, and that kind of ****** me off. If you have never heard Fade To Black or any of their less known gems like Four Horsemen or Of Wolf and Man, then you really can't call yourself that. I'm not talking about someone who just found out about Metallica and metal and started to like it. Most bands popular songs aren't their best. Has anyone ever heard of Judas be my Guide? Yet, it's my favorite Iron Maiden song.

A band can't get popular without being good? Are you kidding me? Ever heard Brittney Spears?? Ever heard Blink 182? Yes, mediocre musicians, but popular no doubt. There are even bands who are hired by record companies and then they hire professionals to play on the album for them. So saying that someone can't be crappy and get popular is completely wrong. While people have to like their music, they don't have to be good at their instrument.

Lars Ulrich is clearly the Herman Li of drumming.

That isn't even a solo. He's playing stuff that should be actual songs. And then he takes a break from being tired. He's so bad.

Metallica got me into heavy metal when I was six, then my Dad played me albums from bands such as Katatonia, After Forever, Arch Enemy, Opeth, Tool, and then they just faded away from my favourites list. There are bands way better than Metallica, and on a more Thrash-Metal level, Trivium (despite the fact that Iron Maiden and Metallica are Matt Heafy's favourite bands) are waaaaaaaaaay better in every single way - lyrics, guitars, drums (Travis Smith and Danny Carey ftw!), so yeah, Metallica are now dead to me. Bullet for my Valentine tries to do this, but I think they're weak and pop-like as compared to Trivium and Metallica.

However, I still respect them for revamping heavy metal...

Even if Lars sucks or not, Metallica is still a great band. And I honestly don't believe they would have gotten so far if they had a crappy drummer, mediocre solo's, and unoriginal riffs.

If what you are saying is correct, they would have just faded away during the eighties.

Anyways, two days from now I'll listen to the "worst drummer ever", "mediocre solo's" and "unoriginal riffs" _live_. And you know what..? I'll enjoy it!

WRONG WRONG WRONG

This is ridiculous.

First of all, Megadeth don't have a patch on Metallica for speed, and nor do Tool. Please give examples of how they are unoriginal, like liken a song to a song prior Metallica's. Lars isn't the most creative, but the guy can double bass like heck, and in And Justice For All he is a fine example of a great beatmaker. Not being a guitarist, I can't comment on Kirk Hammet, but I know that I love "dooing" (singing guitar) along to his solo's, even if they are mostly tapping.

I will give you your due, I cannot stand anyone of that variety. You tell them you like Limp Bizkit, they go "Rollin Rollin Rollin". You tell them you like Nirvana, they sing Smells Like Teen Spirit, you say you like blink-182, they sing I Miss You. These bands are annoying when half of so called fans know 3 songs.

Enter Sandman is pretty guff, I hated Metallica between And Justice For All and St. Anger, which IMO, is a very good album, despite being widely panned. Death Magnetic is even better, bringing even more speed back!

Master of Puppets is overplayed also, but other songs on the album like The Thing That Should Not Be and Disposable Heroes are classics!

Peace out, but never downtalk Metallica! :kz:

Yes and are you insane, you probably played some flick beats, but trying St. Anger and I bet you will sound like a gorilla is being attacked in the bass.

EDIT

Awesomemans, that video whilst probably showing a few years worth of skill is still bad. Your timing is way off almost consistantly, and you play your cymbals with the tip of your stick, probably the worst thing you could do. Either that or it just sounds that way.

I would provide a video of me but I don't have good enough means of recording at the moment, I will be attending studios soon and will post some stuff. I have played drums for 6-7 years mind you.

Cliff. End of Story.
But really its just good and awesome music. I mean older stuff, Master, Ride the Lighting, Kill em all. Pulling Teeth is the one of the best Metallica songs with Orion imo. Cliff really made it, Jason was just kinda Meh. Yeah he did good on The Black album. The new stuff is okay, DM is pretty good i think. But the best albums are Master of Puppets, Not because of just Master of puppets, thats what i hate. How alot of people know just the album because of Master or Puppets. Listen to Battery, Damage Inc. And better yet Orion. Another good album is S&M. that was just friggen epic. Espically Battery. They need to do it again with Kill em all stuff, and Have to do Orion.

And Justice for all is a great album, Harvester of Sorrow, One, Frayed ends of Sanity. But I think MOP has a much heavier bassline, i mean where is it in Justice xD. Drums is not only double bass.
In my old band my drummer was nicknamed "Mandria" (in Italian, that means an horde of bulls running), but he was quite boring with the patterns he did with his hands.

Actually, even if I don't think that Lars is an excellent drummer, I think that he has a lot of good ideas with his sticks, just listen carefully to the Black Album.
Anyway Peter Wildoer, Flo Mournier, Frost, Hellammer are beasts.

Just watch Hellhammer from Mayhem, he's quick, consistant and he doesn't even sweat, his arms make the least movement possible.

Basically, yeah, if you look at their early albums like Kill 'Em All or Master of Puppets, you'll hear some really insane music that I'm a fan of. But, from the Black Album on, it's all crap. I have a mindset from the 80's on this issue: the way I see it, Metallica sold out, and for that, I hate them. They tried to bring back the old sound with Death Magnetic, but if you actually listen to the record, you'll realize there's, like, one good song on the record, and the rest is all crap that sounds very forced... Basically, they're trying to hard... But that's just me, and I'm an Iron Maiden fan...

Something tells me there's sarcasm in that first part... Anyway, I still have huge respect for them and their music, it's just I like their early stuff WAY better then their later stuff... Especially St. Anger, that wasn't a good album. Master of Puppets, on the other hand, was amazingly epic.

I agree, i ahte St. Anger... But load & Re-load have some good stuff, DM is pretty much all good, and teh old albums just rule. lol

And what made you think there was sarcasm? lol ;)

And what made you think there was sarcasm? lol ;)Death Magnetic was okay, I just think it sounds a bit... forced, like they're trying too hard. And I kinda got sick of The Day that Never Comes after hearing it constantly on XM when the record first came out...

Just call it a hunch, really.

a hunch? fair enough then... i would have gone for phsycic powers...

And death Magentic may sound a bit forced, BUT it shows they are back on track, hopefully the next album will be more of the same, but less forced... :D

Maybe said powers gave me the hunch? Who knows?

Yeah, I agree with you there. It is good to see they're trying to get back to where they were before, so let's just hope they stay on track, yeah?

I like how Metallica tried different things, the only problem, to me, was that they changed too much. All of Tool's albums sound different, but I love them all. Iron Maiden's newer albums are so much more different from their old ones, but they still have the melody and solo style that I loved from their older albums. I don't have Death Magnetic, but I hated The Day that Never Comes. I liked that other song, I think it's called "All Nightmare Long" or something.

I still wonder if they were trying to sell out with the Black Album or not. And I wonder who sold out more: Megadeth or Metallica?

Awesomemans go listen to DM. TDTNC is one of my least favourite songs on it, That Was Just Your Life, The Judas Kiss, The Unforgiven III, The End of The Line, Suicide and Redemption, all brilliant songs. Broken Beat And Scarred is good too, though the lyrics are somewhat repetitive... In fact, TDTNC is my least favourite song on the album...

I can't believe you haven't heard it! :'(

I'm surprised you didn't list Cyanide in your list of good songs, maid3n. I think it's probably the one song that I actually like from Death Magnetic. I think it's the closest they got to their old style.

Oh, i forgot Cyanide :')

As much as i like Metallica ( I <3 Metallica) i have to say that Trivium are possibly the best Metal band i have ever heard.

Even better than Maiden. There i said it. (and i also <3 Maiden)

Even The Crusade has some good songs on it, infact it's a good album, but not the same style as the others... Shogun & Ascendancy FTW.

Trivium is pretty sweet, and I do respect their talent (it takes many skills to play thrash like them) but I wouldn't say they're the best metal band I've ever heard... Actually, I don't know if I could narrow it down to one band... They've all got differing... stuff that makes them... different. Yeah.

Yeah, i probably meant best in their Genre (though they ARE my favourite band, there is just somthing about them that i love) :)

Oh, yeah, they do dominate thrash (almost put trash, hehe) in a way that makes me want to slit my wrists, cos I know I'll never reach that potential. But at least it'd sound good while I'm doing it, right? 'Course, I dabble in all kinds of metal, so it's hard for me to pick a favorite. I'd need a list.
