View Full Version : Doubletimes Review thread

06-15-2009, 09:30 AM
I was bussy when i started my latest thread, feel free to delete it.

I am having alot of free time theese days. I am trying to spend some of it on exercising. But it was not especially easy thing to do. So now i will be yet again writing reviews.

The way i will be writing reviews is basicly that first i will write about the level in general. Then i will give it a score for visuals/Gameplay . But the reviews are very flexibel.

There will be many diffrent criterias depending on what type of levels. For exampel i will only have the " replay value " criteria if it is a survival challenge.

The most common " criterias " are

Gameplay ( Difficulty. How fun it is to play and so is included here)

Visuals ( How well the theme works. How good the level looks will be included here)

Audio ( One of the bonus criteria. If a level has alot of focus or no focus at all on sound/music this criteria will be added)

Story ( If it is a level were story is important. This criteria will be added here.)

Gifts ( If it is a freegift level i will have this criteria in. Basicly meaning how usefull the gift is )

And i may have more diffrent criterias depending on what type of level i am playing.

The score system is a default 1-10/10 were

:):):):):):):):):):) means perfect, masterpeice, divine, saga I doubt any level i will be reviewing will get this score on its overall performance.

:):):):):):):):):) Means Extremly splendid. Legendary. Very few levels will get higher than this. Acheiving this score takes a level with alot of effort in it. And a extra ordinary creator as well.

:):):):):):):):) Brilliant, marvellous, fantastic. This is the highest reseonable score. A level with 8/10 is a great level that i would highly recomend to just about anyone.

:):):):):):):) Good level, well done. Levels that gain this score is quite good. But not anything remarkable.

:):):):):):) Ok, Worth playing. Levels that get this score are average. Not very good but has a few sunshine points and is worth playing.

:):):):):) Mediocre, This level propably doesent have especially much effort into it. Allthough some people may still find it worth playing.

:):):):) Bad, A level with this score is the default score for a noobs very first level. Some effort and some potential. That was not fully used.

:):):) Very bad. Well this is not a score to feel particulary proud about. Next time spend more time on the level.

:):) Horribel, Definetly garbage. Theese are just like all the worthless noobs level that spamm up little big planet.

:) Abysmal. Terribel, This level has absolutely no effort into it. It looks horribel and i would advise anyone NOT to play this level. Unless you are suicidal.

Of course for exampel if some noob made a level that isn't even playable i might quit before compleating it ( allthough i have alot of patience. But if i can't stand a level. Why would the average player do so ?)

I will be brutally honest. If i think you should start collecting spoones instead of wasting effort building levels i will say so, yes. Just so you know. If your'e level sucks i am not afraid of saying so.

Brutally honest opinions are always good.

You can start with "ToS2 - On the Island of Sultan Cazimi" by me (PSN: Syroc).
You might want to play the first part before hand, but it's not necessary to understand the level.

Ok im done with Syrocs level. Well i took some screenshots but i forgot to upload them to my album and now my brother is playing and won't leave for a second.

So i guess i will make do with what i got

ToS2 - On the Island of Sultan Cazimi

I dived straight in to this level without playing the prequel. Not that i am a story person. When i dove in to this level i was not expecting anything special even as other players liked it because of the default sticker.

When i enterd into Syrocs scene the impression continued, you start out in a desert area i would suppose that even though the 3 planes are used nicely could use some more visual love. Especially as it doesen't look nice with the canyons floor visibel.

But the negative impression quickly ceased. This is a plattformer to its heart and has alot of good jumping action.

The general visual quality is much better than the average level. Fogg has been used in a very smart way in this level. The astmosphere was brilliant, the style of the buildings really made you feel like you were in some kind of desert town near sahare or something :)

The villagers seems to be very scared for birds. yes that right, birds. The main villian in this scene was " scary overfeed vile aggresive absurdely oversized birds. There is later on a boss fight were you fight this bird.

The plattforming elements here are ingeniusly fantastic IMHO. You will be solving puzzles, swinging like an orangutang, talking with scared bleech villagers. Going up and down from plattforms, dodging rolling fire pits like in the construction site level. and all this over and over. Allthough the plattforming does not reach the average standard of MMs levels ( Wich isn't a reseonable goal btw ) It does go very high.

The boss fight in this level is well...... Not fun at all. I think the attacks are very lame ( 3 plane fire ) And the birds weak point is way to hard to shoot since you are confused alot with the 3 planes ( you have to be on the middle plane to deal dammage to the enermous bird ) This boss takes way to long time, Is frustrating and disturbs the pacing of this level.

So allthough the giant bird boss allmost reaches MMs standard when it comes to visual apperance. Gameplay wise, no thanks. You should have used only 1 plane for the fight to start with so that players wont shoot in the air infront or behind its beak.

The level is very long, But interesting. Allthough i believe that the bird boss is a serius issue here it is very good.

So about time to go to scorings here.

Gameplay 8/10 ( Brilliant )

Wethever it's jumping on poor sand peoples houses. Doing some swingedingelings on a wodden structure, pulling switches or solving apropriate puzzels. You will allways have something to do here. It would have acheived a higher score but not thanks to the crappy bírd brain here ( XD )

Visual 8/10

The visuals here are simpel and clean. But yet very fun to watch. The materials choosen here works well. But some areas ( The start area in particulair ) Are not beutifull to gaze uppon. This in combination with the fact that you can see * Canyons theme " s floor drags the score down.

Boss 5/10

Having a visual treat is not enough. When someone poured peppar into your'e desert. The gameplay is very bad here. A boss is usually the best part of alot of levels and quite frankly, here it is not that case. The boss needs to be redone.

Astmosphere 8/10

The fogg is brilliant. Allthough more sound effects would not be a bad thing the visual style and the music tracks you have choosen works well. At some times it really felt that i was in some desert village.

Over all 7/10 with the comment very good

Comments. You should really have spent more time on the boss, but other than that this is a very good level that i would recomend to my readers =)

I think you should have some more exciting sticker as icon since a good sticker is more likely to attract players.

Next time. It is better to have no boss at all than to have a boss like this. Search for the most likely frustration elements and remove them.

Robos review comming soon

Um hey, Not trying to be mean or anything but. I've played Syroc's level's also, and from what I just read. You just played the prequel level instead of Tos2

Thank you for the review, but Noribito pointed out you did indeed review ToS - The Valley of Birds. :)
No worries though.

I know that the boss is, well, not all that...
The reason for that is quite simply that it was my first boss ever. ^.^
I did a bit better in the second part of ToS. ;)

Definitely going to re-do the boss now, thanks to your honest opinion. It so hard to get them these days.
I don't want to hear that my level is great when you weren't satisfied. That doesn't help me at all.

Can you review my level titled "Just a Day at Sackboy Beach"?

You can grab the enemies to get rid of them or not. Don't touch enemies during the eclipse. And grab any floating clock that you see.
