View Full Version : *Finished* LBPC Lift/Elevator Challenge (XP Awards)

Contest Closed. Now Judging.

We all know that there are a variety of different ways to go from point A to point B in littlebigplanet. Oftentimes, we find that we want point A to be above or below point B and will construct an elevator (or lift, for our friends across the pond) accordingly. Now, there's no right or wrong way to make an elevator, but there are bound to be some super creative ways of changing sackboy's elevation.

That's why I'm calling on all of you! Presenting...

LittleBigPlanetCentral's Lift/Elevator Challenge

1750 experience points are up for grabs and will be awarded to the LBPC members who submit the top 3 most impressive elevators before the contest deadline. Experience points will be awarded as follows:

1st Place: 1000 xp
2nd Place: 500 xp
3rd Place: 250 xp

Assuming we have sufficient entries on that date, the contest will end at 10:00 PM GMT on October 1st.

Rules:

You must use the template start gate and scoreboard which can be found by following the directions below.
You cannot make edits to the template pieces. To make this simpler, they are given away as a prize for touching the scoreboard in the template level. Prizes cannot be edited. Building around them is perfectly acceptable.
Stickering the template pieces is allowed.
You may place the template pieces wherever in the level you desire. Rotating them is fine.
If you include more in your level than the elevator, you will be judged solely on the elevator itself.
Have fun! It does not matter what your lift/elevator looks like or what direction it moves in. I will be pretty lenient in what I define as an elevator, but sackboy must remain in/on the elevator for the duration of its "trip."

Template pieces:

How to participate

There is a locked level that can be found on my littlebigplanet. To access the template level you must play my lockbox/key room and enter a simple 3 digit code. To enter the code, simply grab the floor of the corresponding number. If keys do not work for you, contact me privately and we will arrange alternate methods to give you the template pieces.

The level is now unlocked and open to the public.

PSN: comphermc
Level: LBPC Lift/Elevator Template Level

When you have a finished level, just publish it on your planet with the title "LBPC Lift/Elevator Entry" or something. I'm not going to be too picky. Then, post here and make it perfectly clear that you have submitted an entry. I cannot judge your level if I do not know it exists! Please, only one entry per person.

How to win

Your entries will be judged on the following attributes:

Originality
Functionality
Creativity
Appearance
Aesthetics (sound and/or lighting)

Your elevator design is not required to have all of these. If you feel that you have a design that only fits a couple of these attributes, feel free to submit it. These are just the sort of things to consider when making your design. If your design is original, looks great, and is just the complete package, but it isn't what some would consider 'creative', it has a better chance of doing well than a level that does all of these things, but just doesn't have a 'wow' factor. I hope I'm making myself clear.

--------------------------------------------------------

Keep in mind that I am giving you my own, hard earned xp. In that regard, make it worth my while - don't submit a chain attached to some wood on one end and dark matter on the other.

Thanks :)

[I will be looking for a couple of judges as well. If you feel like you are capable, contact me via PM]

Pictures of the template pieces now added. As you can tell, they allow for a pretty open ended design. Show me what you've got!

There's no theme necessary - go wild with your own theme. You just need to be creative to fit the template pieces into your theme.

Two potential entries so far. Anyone willing to be third?

I've got a couple of those, functionality is a little iffy right now. :p

Also, what's the difference between being "original" and being "creative"?

Burnvictim42
09-12-2009, 08:57 PM
My guess is creativity would refer to how its built/items are used, originality would refer to how it looks/functions.
ie: a creative elevator would use stickers in a way you wouldnt think
an original one would look like/do something you've never seen before.

But, i'll wait for comphermc's judgement, i'm just a judge (now accepting bribes ;p), he's the one who made the awesome contest

EDIT: And if you think i'm serious about the bribes its because i forgot to add the tags.

Im having a go...

But a question:

Does it have to be a elevater? Can it be anything that moves your sackpeep along?

comphermc

Originality: something that has never been done before

Creativity: doesn't necessarily have to be a new concept, but it shows that you were thinking and being creative

-----------

The elevator can move horizontally, vertically, diagonally, or any combination thereof. As long as sacky stays in/on the pod/elevator/container, then I will allow it. You can also have more than one elevator, but I will judge them as a whole. That doesn't mean that you should just make a dozen different versions and ask me to judge them all - use common sense here.

@syroc - why can't you enter whatever it is you are talking about?

-----------

Just to clarify, it can be a somewhat standard elevator, but if you make it do something awesome/funny/unique (anything to set it apart), it might have a chance to win the thing. Really, I'm not sure what to expect from you all.

I saw one pre-entry and it was not at all what I expected. This is not a bad thing, it was just unexpected :p.

My entry:

LBPC Lift Contest - fork lift

can we have more than one entry?

comphermc
09-13-2009, 12:24 AM
You can make more than one, but by the time the deadline rolls around, I'd like you to choose which entry you'd like us to judge.

To clarify, that means one entry per person.

@ moocow - if your forklift in fact lifts sack from the start point to the endpoint, then it is allowed. It would definitely fit the bill for creativity.

is it fine that i turned to start around?

How much do we care about

the return journey? Failure safety

A return journey is not necessary unless your intent is to show that it operates in both directions.

It's really your call. If it sometimes fails, that would be reflected in the functionality consideration of the judging. I am not going to pop-myself in an attempt to break the level half-way through the ride. I will test/play/judge it like an intelligent player.

Again, I intend to be pretty flexible.

LOL, um, i dont mean to put all my eggs in one basket, or to peck at the subject...ok, no more puns. i was working on a Willy Wonka type elevator that had went left right up or down, and i had an idea to make it diagonal, but it is too big a bite for me. i have all the logic and a clear idea of what i need. it just doesnt work on the game. i spent 8 hours last night trying to fix and tweak but im just too frustrated with the whole thing now, and kinda upset it doesnt work (worked my butt off for thre days to make it awesome)
i was trying a climber but it failed epic, i mean EPIC

So its not really an elevator contest more of a get sackboy from point A to point B in a creative fashion, but it has to resemble a lift/elevator

Exactly! Haha. My design would probably very much resemble an elevator, but that's because I lack creativity!

well I dunno, if we are talking about a contraption that will increase sackboy's elevation, then you could say that contraption would be elevating him. And what name would you give to a device that elevates? You'd call it a lift. :D

Mine doesn't necessarily "lift" or "elevate" the player. I guess it does actually, but what it mainly does is throw the player around inside a little enclosed object and toss them to a new place, the lifting and elevating are just bi-products. :p

EDIT: Mine is done and published as "LBPC Elevator Challenge Entry".

I spent about 12 hours today ( make that most of yesterday as it's tomorrow already. erm ! eh ! you know what i mean ).

Anyway after tearing my hair out because every method I tried failed on an epic scale I've managed to get something working. It's really annoying because my first 2 ideas were planned and built with almost military precision and should have worked perfectly but didn't. Must be the weird LBP physics, although it's been a terrible day for lag and bugs and the PS3 freezing twice.

Anyway it's published locked at the moment because I still have to do some fine tuning but it shouldn't be too much longer.

I'll let you know when it's ready and what it's called.

Awesome, I'm glad to see some submissions rolling in already. Even after you tell me that it's finished and released, you can make changes as they come to you. The deadline is looking like it's going to be October 1st, as we have sufficient entries at this point.

Keep it up, gadders!

is it cheating if i need to ask someone for some help figuring out why certain mechanics don't work. its too late really cause i just scraped the Willy Wonka thing. but, since there is time, if i decide to try it again i would like to know.

I'm not sure if it's cheating, but I wouldn't mind helping you out. To make an elevator that moves in all directions, just attach pistons on one end to glass on a track and the other end to the elevator. It will take a bit of tweaking, but I've done it in the past. :)

comphermc
09-17-2009, 12:05 PM
Absolutely it's not cheating. :) Part of the motivation for this is to open people's eyes to the different ways that elevators can be used and made. It would be a disservice to deny help if you were trying to attack a certain design. I'd even be willing to help you sort it out. Just the logic and mechanism, though, not the whole design part.

The same goes for anyone here.

Ok guys mine is out there if you want to take a look. It's only short but it still took a hell of a lot of tweaking, head scratching, swearing and rewinding to get to where it is now.

Mini-Update:

The level is no longer locked. I just had it locked temporarily so I didn't get any traffic from the rest of the LBP community. For anyone that hadn't gotten the template pieces before on account of keys not working, fear not!

I'm also working on a "just-for-fun" entry of my own. When I have it finished, I'll put it in place of the current template level. Keep an eye out. ;)

The word on the street is that Burnvictim is doing the same. Neither of us are participating in the contest, but we felt we couldn't miss out on the fun.

Alright, well my "entry" is done. Obviously its not a real entry, but i decided to make one for kicks and giggles. no matter how many ways i try to search i cant find rocket man, is it locked?

I think it's the 'search bug' that we've had for a while now. it's a pain but there is a way around it.
When you search for an author now it doesn't display all their levels. Maybe it doesn't display levels published since the bug began, i'm not sure but what I do is find the author's levels that are showing, pick one of them with the square and then select 'find more by this author'. Sometimes that shows the new ones right away but other times it just shows the author's square profile pic. If that happens search 'more by this author' from that and then the new levels should show up.
Try it and let me know if it works.

Burnvictim42
09-23-2009, 03:59 PM
yea, its probably the search bug. Penguinman1432 has had levels published for a while though, so you can see his profile. I typically search for username anyway :p

WHY!!!????? I hate, with a capitol ATE my connection. i got a Belkin 54g wireless router and it has been giving me problems since day one. But now? After it has been working for the last week with almost no problems it won't let me connect? Grrr, okay, I'm gonna hit this thing a few times with a hammer and call it really hurtful names and when it concedes to being my slave I will try the search and see if it works. No LBP for me today, I might just cry. Thank god, or budha, or whoever for MSG4 and Bioshock

Alright, the judges have made their decisions. Drumroll please...

1st Place: TonyTwoGuns - Great little lift concept. It worked really well. Would've liked to see the grab switch be a one shot so you didn't have to hold on, but oh well. First place is yours.

2nd Place: MisterVista - Simple in concept and functionally solid. Nice.

3rd Place: BSprague -While the most unique of the bunch, it was a bit lacking in the dependability department. It usually made it to the end, but you generally had to sacrifice a life to do it. Nicely done.

Thanks alot for choosing mine as the winner! Well done to Mistervista and BSprague, i played their entries and they both could have won too. Thanks again

Also, never really thought about making it a one shot switch. I'll keep that in mind for future levels.:)

comphermc
10-04-2009, 09:31 PM
It would have to be either a toggle switch or a PERM switch if you were to do it. Are you familiar with these?

Burnvictim42
10-04-2009, 09:35 PM
Yea, it would have required a little extra logic, thats all. By making it so you only had to grab the switch for the elevator to move you make it easier to the player, and cooler as its all doing it on its own.
All the winning entries were a very close vote for me, congratulations to all of you.

mistervista
10-04-2009, 09:52 PM
Thanks guys.

I'm a total novice with anything that requires logic. I've never really managed to get my head round it so I have to make things that are more simplistic and bodge up switches by trial and error so I'm amazed to have come anywhere.

Congrats to TonyTwoGunz and BSprague too. Well done guys.

I should definitely have invested some time adding in those stabilizers that I thought about. It was all fun to build though, probably one of the best contest ideas so far. Congratulations to the other winners, I'll get around to playing your entries soon, so don't take them down yet! :)
