Join the Space Corps and be the first sack to land on My Moon.

My first LBP PSP level, and *gasp* it's based on a movie! ;) Hardly a surprise, I'm sure, but I had a lot of fun with this one. It's a cartoony, tongue-in-cheek satire of the US space program presented in a series of survival challenges, light platforming, and other mini-games. It's a reasonably long level (for a PSP anyway) that never takes itself seriously. I hope you enjoy it.

I had the expected swarm of bugs in this level; slowly but surely I was able to squish them all and miraculously somehow got everything working all at the same time.

Edit: Thanks to the supreme awesomeness known as JKthree, I now have pictures and a video of my level. Thanks JK!

One of my most favorite movies ever! I thought of the name a long time ago but never really had any idea what to do with it.

I hope you like it! :)

Hey Taffey,

Wait, what movie is this? Did I miss something? Hmm. Anyways, that was a fantastic level with a charming sense of humor. Negative reinforcement training...that just tickles the stuffing out of me! I loved the chain of deceptive tests, but frown upon the idea that you can't ace the level...I guess it's a necessary forfeit for the humor to work. I loved the flight surgeon and the launching sequence, except I felt the events on the moon were somewhat anti-climactic...perhaps adding more events--even if it's just simple platforming--would suffice?

Anyways, job well done on the engaging and hilarious theme, as well as the execution. I was thoroughly impressed. Five stars, level and author heart.

Fan of the unnecessary surprise death-by-spike-trap test,

This level is awesome! It looks good, has some great platform sections and actually made me laugh out loud in one section too! Impossible to ace obviously but thats okay. Not much else I can say about it really. Was totally bug free and will stay on my PSP for ages,

Awesome, thanks everybody for the plays and the feedback. I'm glad everyone is having a good time with it! I was stressed I wouldn't get it published before I leave town next week, but somehow I managed to push it out early. :)

Wait, what movie is this? Did I miss something?Ah! Well, the movie is The Right Stuff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Right_Stuff_(film)), a must-see. If you're a space-head like I am (or even if you're not), you will love it. Think of it as the spiritual prequel to Apollo 13. It's a long one though... 4 hours I believe. It's based on a book by Tom Wolfe, which is essentially a non-fiction piece about the space race in the 1960's. So, my level is (loosely) based on a movie based on a book based on facts. :p

I was worried nobody would "get it", but it looks like my fears were unfounded. Yes, it's too bad there's no acing this, but it was a calculated risk. ;) Good suggestion on the moon sequence. If I publish an update, I will try to encorporate something there, although the maxed out thermometer is scaring me. It got to the point where small changes here and there started to break pistons that previously had not been acting up. I think the physics model was beginning to barf, so I wrapped it up and published it while it was still all working.

Well now I see your cleverness in the title of the level! Anyways, I'll definitely check this movie out when I have time. If a movie can inspire a level such as this, then it's definitely worth watching!:)

I finally got the time to play this, and boy was it worth it.
I think only three words can describe this level : Epic.

I smiled all the way through, and the unnecessary surprise death-by-spike-trap was definitely the best.

I liked your use of stickers, they all told a little story as you went through the level and some got some very ingenious usage. I also have to say my jaw dropped when I saw the rocket. Even though I have some idea how you were able to achieve that effect, I was still rightly impressed.

:star::star::star::star::star: and ♥'ed. That was great. :)

Heck, I should probably have your name in the level credits somewhere. Not only did I use your super excellent LBPC logo, but it was your discovery of the corner editing bug/feature that made this level even possible. No way I could have made all those pistons and doors work properly all at the same time without your help.

Ah, thanks a lot, but having the LBPC logo in there is credit enough for me. I got a special feeling when I saw it. :)

I'm just glad to have helped my fellow creators get the most out of the create mode we were given. I like to see what others can create and be inspired by it. If the levels I've played so far are any indication of what's in store for the future, I don't think the PSP level library will have much to envy to its PS3 counterpart.

It was the first level that I played after publishing mine past night... and let me tell you, it restored my faith on LBP PSP. It's impressive. The use of stickers, the puzzles, the funny script, the WOW moments (like the rocket), everything works just fine. I had a total blast with your level. Congratulations for creating one of the best levels out there.

5 stars, hearted level & author.

Fantastic level - good platforming elements, great sticker usage, impressive technical aspects, and best (and most important) of all it was entertaining and amusing to play.

The best thing about it is that it was made using the LBP create mode, I imagine it must have been a trial at points considering the current problems; I think people would love it if you would take a bit of time and go through your process for making the level (particularly the rocket sequence), and how you overcame any problems found with the editor.

The only part I didn't enjoy much was the planet-sorting section, though that could be because of spending a lot of my time working with that mechanic before and thus being a bit sick of it...

I agree the moon section could have had a bit more jazz in it, but it felt just the right length regardless. Well done.

Thanks for the glowing praise everyone - I'm really just tickled pink that this level has been received so well. Seems I'm not the only one who can appreciate a space joke every now and again. :)

I think people would love it if you would take a bit of time and go through your process for making the level (particularly the rocket sequence), and how you overcame any problems found with the editor.I can go into more depth if people are genuinely interested, but I'll give the 5-cent-tour version now. I had completed the level up to the spike trap when Gilgamesh discovered the corner editing anti-glitch. Everything after that point went pretty smoothly (except for an incident with a corrupt profile, when I thought I had lost the level). I did have to go back through the first half of the level and continually fix everything that decided to break, but eventually got it sorted. I had lots of problems with 2-way switches and finally just decided to replace them all with other mechanics.

I have had a few people ask me about the rocket sequence, and it's really quite simple. The red walkway has a thick layer of glass in the foreground, which forces Sackboy to the back layer, and a thin layer of blue metal in the background. Halfway down the red walkway, it switches to a thin layer of blue metal in the middle layer and a thin layer of glass in the front layer, which maintains the same overall look only Sackboy is now behind the blue metal. From there, Sackboy drops into the command module, which is hidden in the back layer, and the rocket does its thing in the front layer. The module and the rocket are on two different pistons set to slightly different speeds to give the camera a panning effect. Easy!

Played this one last night and really enjoyed it!

It's funny - darn funny! Lots of inside Space jokes that made me giggle too. You've got a lot going on in this level that is just fantastic:
+ Stickers are great
+ Unexpected death is funny and not cheap
+ Clever references
+ Cool planet challenge and "training" plot
+ The rocket is awesome!
+ Love the capsule too

The only problem I had with it was when you have to spacewalk it wasn't immediately clear I could jump forward a plane. I'm gonna chalk that up to me being a bit tired and not really a design problem. Although a jetpack in there might look cool too ;)

Hands down the funniest and most entertaining LBP PSP level I've yet played. 5 stars & hearted - easy :) Keep 'em coming!

Morgana likes it! *does another happy dance* Not that you don't ever like stuff, but a thumbs up from you means a lot to me. The People's Queen has spoken! :D

All excellent points of feedback, especially the jetpack suggestion. Great minds think alike, or in this case LPBC minds. I originally had a jetpack there for another minigame but couldn't make it fit in the level. Come to think of it, I had ideas for at least another 4 or 5 minigames, some of which I started building, including a significant one on the moon. Hmm. Well I guess the obvious answer is a sequel - can't let them good idears go to waste. :)

Thanks Jack! I'm happy to make your train ride that much more tolerable. ;)

I haven't had my PSP online since the 9th, so I'm curious how this level has been doing on plays/hearts/rating. Last time I checked it was on page 1 for "Highest Rated" (along with both of your levels) and page 3 for "Most Hearted".

Regardless, my away time has been surprisingly productive. I'm nearly done with my next level - one last section to build with only 2 ticks on the thermo left. After that there's the highly icky debugging process to go through. :(

Hands down, best level I have ever played to this date. Tell me, how did you make the illusion that the walkway was getting smaller?

***** 5 Star + Hearted
Keep up the good work.

Taffey
12-20-2009, 03:52 PM
Much obliged, kind gadder. :)

The walkway illusion is just a layer-switching trick. Once Sackboy (or Sackgirl) is on the back layer, I was able to create the rocket scene in the front layer. The shrinking walkway is just corner edited to look like it's going into the distance, and I also made the stickers smaller as well to help sell the look.

Well, I can see your level is very popular!
When I searched for it, it had 447 hearts, and maybe 2500 plays, OMG!
When it is first found you see it only a 2 number on the plays, but when you press x, you see the 2500...

I am looking forward to play it!

EDIT:

I played it, and it is awesome! Deserves all the plays and hearts!
Gave it 5* and a heart to the level and you!

AceCreator's "SuperSackball!" has been #1 on the Most Hearted list for quite a while, but "The Right Stuffing" has been slowly catching up over the past couple of months. This weekend I finally managed to take the top spot with over 1,900 hearts on 16,000 plays. It has far surpassed all of my PS3 creations in popularity, which still boggles my mind.

I just wanted to thank all of you here on LBPCentral for helping to make this level such a success. I couldn't have done it without you!

P.S. This has very much inspired me to start work on a new creation, and although it is not "Space Corps 4" I think you'll still enjoy it. I hope to release it soon as a token of my appreciation for all of you.

Oh no you di-int.

I don't have LBP on PSP, so I consider this a personal loss for me, and I will spend the rest of my evening in mourning (as well as its newer "sequel").

You know as well as anyone the extent to which I share your spacey tastes, and it also so happens that Tom Wolfe's The Right Stuff is one of my favorite books. It's one of the FUNNIEST books I've ever read, and totally and completely unforgettable. I don't know if I've ever read another book that comes up more for me in everyday life. His explanations of "single combat" and his descriptions of "that righteous stuff" are imprinted indelibly in my brainstem.

But your screenshots are fantastic, especially the shots of the evil doctor with the flood of pills. I also love what I'm assuming is the NASA offices of the 1950s and 60s. The wood paneling, the post-it notes and the white board, all awesome.

I haven't read the book in many moons (pun intended), but the movie has been in my regular "rotation" for years. And yes, it is absolutely hilarious - but it's that kind of under the radar type hilarious that people either don't pay attention to or forget about. Kind of like how Robocop is really a comedy at its roots, but wears a very nifty sci-fi suit.

So anyway, yeah - the space race of the 50's and 60's. I have been jotting down notes for a level named "The Right Stuffing" since November 2008 when I bought LBP PS3 - ironic that I had to wait until the PSP release to finally push the launch button. It was a big leap of faith for me to depart from page-by-page realism and just go for goofy impressions, but it seems to have been the right decision. :)

Well, here's hoping that someday some pudknocker sells you a PSP on the cheap so you can enjoy a bit of portable LBP goodness. ;)
