View Full Version : Boss Rush 4 (Registration and Discussion)

Ok, well, it's been awhile since the previous Boss Rush, so, I figure it's about time to get the 4th one started.

Yeah, it took me awhile, but... Im lazy, sue me.

Anyway.

This thread is for two things: Registration, and discussion of just how this is going to work.

For the most part, the rules remain the same as the previous BRs. I will put out a template within the next few days, and bosses must be constructed within this template.

As before, the idea is simple: a retro-style boss rush, one after another, all following a particular theme. All of the bosses will be judged, by.... um.... my mysterious judges.... and the winner will be the Final Boss. (as I am running this, my own boss will not be eligable for this).

One important rule, just like the last BRs: Your boss cannot take up any more than 4 blocks of thermo space.

Also, I will be testing these.... very, very carefully.... for any bugs. If I find any, I'll contact you right away.

....and if anyone wants to volunteer to assist with testing, that'd be quite appreciated.

Now, I know alot of you probably have alot of holiday stuff to deal with right now, so actual submission will not begin until the 15th of January. Submissions will END at the on February 15th. That should be plenty of time for everyone to make their horrible doom-spitting monstrosities of DOOM, and hopefully iron out the bugs so that I dont have to yell at the screen more than I already do.

So, the rules in a nutshell:

1. Boss must be submitted anytime between January 1st and January 31st.

2. Boss must follow the (as of yet undetermined) theme.

3. Boss must be free of bugs to be included in the final version and the judging.

4. Boss must not take up more than 4 blocks on thermo.

5. Registration is open until the final day of submission.

6. Boss must fit within one of the given templates. It may not extend outside of this in any way. Utilize the given space as you see fit.

7. Level must be named LBPC_BR4. This is so that I can find them easier, and whatnot.

8. Once submitted, please leave the levels uploaded. I may not immediately get to grabbing them right away.

9. Submissions must be copyable.

Pretty simple rules for now. Again, mostly the same as the previous BRs.

So, if you are interested, go ahead and register here. I will compile a list of all entrants, which will be displayed on this front post.

Also, this is the place to discuss this contest, as well as determine a theme.

There had been some interesting ideas from last time, such as "retro" bosses or whatever. I'd also had the idea recently of doing water-themed bosses, what with the Water thing FINALLY being released in just 2 days here.

I'll leave this aspect mostly up to you guys; discuss it here, and we'll go from there.

Well, making water bosses could be fun, but some serious consideration needs to be made on how to lay out the level. It wouldn't do to have an epic fight against a twelve foot tall, electric, fire-breathing seahorse, only to have to face a broken mess in the next room because that boss wasn't designed for water.

I think having a water theme is a good idea. It should bring in a lot of original new designs.

Yeah, a very good point.

I have some ideas on just how to make it work though. If I remember correctly, there's some sort of switch-like gizmo that can be used to change the water level during gameplay; with the right setup that can make it work.

The issue is that the forces underwater and around moving water can break anything that isn't designed with this in mind - literally break or interfere with logic. Seeing as you will be provided with finished bosses, your best bet would be to move the water level prior to reaching a boss and then emit the boss into it's area. That way the water level won't be shifting around it at any point.

This will probably save a lot of headache when putting it all together :)

Smart thinking RTM :D Not sure if i'm going to enter this or not, i'll decide sometime later ;p

BR3 was a blast, and i'm sure this will be too, i'm not so sure about my time schedule though, so we'll see.

Yeah, is standard if you want a level with dynamic water levels. Either rods and dissolve to hold stuff down, or emitters. With something as complex as a boss the latter is the way to go IMO.

Please keep in mind, it doesnt HAVE to be water-themed bosses.

Granted, it certainly is a cool theme, lol, but it can be something else if you guys would rather do something else.

My current idea, on the structure of the finished level, is simple.

I'd already had the thought that yeah, having things submerged that arent supposed to be and then getting to them, well, you might find the thing in question a bit wrecked. So my idea was this: Organize the level in a sort of vertical way; you start on the bottom of a "tower" of rooms.... each containing a boss.... and each specific boss can raise the water to whatever level it requires for that given fight. This way, you're not wrecking anything that you havent gotten to yet.

Yeah, this'll take some funky construction techniques, but.... well, Im thinking that ALOT of things involving the water are going to require that. It's just going to be part of creating levels that involve it.

The idea of course can be refined later, but that's my current thought.

The best would be to make water free boss rush: And as for theme i say " space theme " It would be soooo awsome. And i could make an epic original ufo boss.

Btw will you be reviewing the bosses as well bridget =P ?

The previus boss rushes were...plauged by far to hard bosses. And impossibel frustrating bosses. Make sure the boss is playable as well as bugg free =P

Allso having a water theme is begging for trouble with glitches >>><<<

No triple posting. Triple posting is bad and wasteful of precious space. Just edit your posts instead.

Relating to the thread, I think it's time we had a boss tower. It'd be cool. I might even sign up for it. :)

Hmmm, the boss rush returns.

I think an arcade style theme would be pretty cool - so all the visuals had to be locky and stuff :p

I'd play that!

Blocky? ew, I hate retro stuff. Blocky does not work well for me.

Have an open theme. That allows alot of ideas not a retro theme that forces you to do something someone else have allready done.

I recomend space theme or water theme when i think about it. BUt etheir have it revolving around water or don't have any water at all!

If you want to make it with water have a tower so it won't affect future bosses. Allso for exampel if i made a logic system for waves of the exactly right height. Then how would you be able to adjust it so it will behave the way i wanted it to? I guess i will have to leave signs or something telling you how to adjust it so a wate boss fight will behave the way we wanted it to.

But seriuosly. As soon as you say the theme i will work on the boss =P

Well, being that I cant seem to create anything without it becoming some sort of bullet-spraying nightmare......and Im aware that my stuff is just too hard for some players...... an idea like the last one, with the "hub" structure, may also be a good move.

That way someone doesnt get stuck on a boss (likely one of mine) and not get to see the rest of them because of it.

Some of the bosses were seemingly impossibel you know. Like the flying dragon boss from br3 that killed me with non dodgeable gass before i could even see him lol.

Test the bosses with casual players to see if they are playable ! And decide what theme you are having so i can start creating !

Of course, for any of this to happen.... need players that wanna submit bosses. Need enough of them, too.

If anyone is interested in joining at this point, please do say so.

I'll enter the contest. I've been fooling around with different boss AI's, so I would think it would be somewhat up my alley. Of course, I can't start on it till I know the theme and have a template to use.

Oh also. I think the theme should be water. Water Bosses haven't really been explored, so it would be interesting to see what people could come up with.

I change my idea for the theme >.> I'd rather it be something none-water. Maybe 'Mechanical' or 'Future-Tech'. I had a touch of brilliance and have the greatest boss idea ever... that won't operate in water.

id commit, but due to some problems i might not be able to,

as for the theme i'd like Mechanical, like Rustyard :D

Sorry all, wasnt able to get on here for a time there.

Anyway.

Before any of this gets going, need to make sure that enough people are even interested in joining and making bosses. Please be sure to specify if you're joining or not! If there's any questions, please do ask.

As for the themes,

I like the whole mechanical/junk idea. Particularly 'cause my bosses always end up looking like that anyway..... haha.

That one's been suggested a few times now, so if nobody has any issues with it, we'll go with that.

And it looks like this whole thing is gonna get started later than I'd originally said, but that's ok.

I'd be up for making another one of my patented annoying/needlessly complex bosses. :p

A mechanical theme sounds good, though I'd still be interested in trying to make a water boss. Maybe if enough people want to make a water boss we could have a separate Boss Rush level that contains all of the waterborne bosses and is completely flooded? That would simplify the design a lot.

Although if we go for the Hub layout, the levels could simply be separated in half with the bottom part being flooded and containing water bosses, while the upper half contains mechanical bosses. Just throwing some ideas out there.

Allright, one way or another, about time to get this one started.

I like the idea of doing mechanical AND water. The suggestion of having either a divided level or 2 seperate levels would work out quite fine. So non-water bosses should be able to work without any trouble.

I'll work out a template level either tonight or tomorrow night and put it up, and then we can go from there.

And sorry for the late reply here, but I got sucked into certain games I was playing, and as far as LBP goes, working on projects of my own.
