We've reached our goal!

That's right, we've done it! Thanks to everyone who helped out. We are currently in the process of transferring the LBPCentral vBulletin license from the original owner (the man who started this forum in the first place, lbp - great guy!). Once that's complete, we'll begin the upgrade. Thanks again to everyone for helping out!

Hey guys! Now that we've solved the server issues, our next goal is quite a big one, so we're asking for your help! We want to upgrade the site to vBulletin 4.0 Gold, which includes an all new publishing suite. Before we get into pricing, let me explain what we're looking at if we upgrade (full feature comparison here (http://www.vbulletin.com/index.php?do=features)):

Updated style/layout. At first, we would use the default vBulletin 4.0 skin (which is beautiful, don't get me wrong - check it out (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/forum.php)), but I would custom-design a new skin for LBPCentral, including making it a little more LBP-ish. We'll probably ditch the shiny grey and blue for something with a little more color. I haven't really decided yet. Either way, the layout would be much better on the eyes and much more intuitive.
All new CMS (Content Management System). We will be able to do much more powerful things with our homepage, and things will work tons better than they do now. Lots more control for us, lots more content for you guys.
Integrated blogs. We have a blogs feature now, but this would be much more in-depth and feature-packed.

Now, as to the mods/plugins we have installed, I can't guarantee that all of them will stick around. However, I can guarantee that if an updated version or similar mod exists, we will get it working.

Now, onto the price. For one license (with the blogs and CMS), it costs $285. Now, since we have two sites to take care of, I won't buy the licenses until I have enough to afford both at the same time. I'm not trying to leave LBPCentral in the dust, but we have a consistent level of quality we want to maintain across sites, so it's important they work in similar ways as well. That means the total amount we have to raise for this update is $570.00.

Obviously, we don't have that kind of money right now (or any time soon, to be honest), so we're asking for your help (if you can afford it). If you donate towards this, you'll be making an investment into the future of LBPCentral. Everything we do once we update will be based on this new software, which means you'll have been a part of helping LBPCentral improve upon itself. A truly community-driven site.

For potential donors:
I have a deal: for anyone who donates $50 or more towards this cause, we'll double your Donor period (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=173875#post173875). If you donate $100 or more, we'll make you a lifelong Donor. All you have to do is let me know that you donated specifically for this, and you'll be all set up. If we make enough money to afford the upgrade, we'll stop offering this, so if you are able and willing to help, please do so as soon as possible. I am promising that if we do this, I will put in the work required to get a new style going as well as all of the new features brought on by this update.

In the end, whether or not we upgrade is really up to you guys, so head to vBulletin.com (http://www.vbulletin.com/index.php), check out the product, and if you think it would be work upgrading, please donate toward it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer all of them.

I gotta be honest, this doesn't make much sense to me. I understand the desire for consistent quality across sites, but LBPC has more than five times the active users that MNRC has! Why not let the success of each community dictate the features and upgrades they receive? In my opinion, that seems like a fair and reasonable way to go about it. And I know that you and I have discussed similar issues when the Comet Chat feature was purchased, but since this involves a lot more money, I wanted to reiterate my thoughts once again.

That said, if the upgrade (which does sound nice) does take place and you need any help with the design of the site, I'd be glad to help out.

I am more than willing to make sure that your donated money goes toward only one site or another - it's your money, and I'll use it how you ask me to use it. However, I won't upgrade one site before another because I administrate both sites and I do not want to come off as if I favor one site over another. Above all, I need to be objective in as many ways as possible, this included.

I don't know, while I do think this site could definitely use the upgrade I think $50-$100 is a bit much. I'll use another forum as an example, there when you donate money you automatically become a "Subscriber" which basically gives you loads of more privledges such as larger sig space, different colored username, Subscriber only forum, etc.. There are many options on that forum as to how long you would like to Subscribe, $5 for a month, $10 for 6 months, $20 for a year, $30 for 2 years, $40 for 3 years. I personally Subscribed on that Site for a year and have no problem donating to this Site as I am on here quite a bit.

My question is, what are the perks of donating to this site? I know that you get a green dot next to your name and a larger avatar but is there anything else? Maybe you could offer extra things to the people who donate so even more members could give money, just a thought. :)

Likewise. I have a gift card I could use to move the cause along 10 bucks, but I already tried linking it to Paypal some weeks ago and failed. I'm sorry, CC!

EDIT: Scratch that. Managed to send 10 bucks your way :D

Other than the colored username and the private forum, what we offer is incredibly similar to what the other forum you mentioned offers. We don't offer the colored username for two reasons: one, for clarity - we want site staff to be the only ones with colored usernames; and two, we want to avoid superiority issues (which we have had problems with in the past). When it comes to the private forum, what's the point? Is there anything of substance that Donors should be able to discuss privately? (I'm not being facetious, I truly cannot think of any substantial use for a private Donor forum.)

Regarding the Donor upgrade itself, while we don't advertise the specific features that Donors are given (we don't want to appear as if we are selling an upgrade), I promise you that they are substantial (just ask any Donor). You are in no way required to donate the full $50/$100 amount either - those are just the threshold for the extra time we're giving away. You can donate $10 if you prefer, and you'll still be an official Donor. You'll just be a Donor for a shorter length of time than if you donated more money. Head to this thread (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=173875#post173875) for more information on Donating.

So... if my math is correct... a $50 donation under this special fund-raising plan amounts to 20 months of Donor benefits?

and... @ Endless_Echo (cool name, BTW): Yes, the benefits are many and wonderful (I sometimes forget until I visit the site as a Guest how great it is to not see any ads - and that's just one of the benefits). Well worth every penny I've donated thus far.

also... @ mrsupercomputer: I understand your point of view. I personally have no interest in MNR - the game or the forum site. But I can completely understand CC's point of view. Moreover, from 20+ years experience in the software business, I can tell you right now... if you can avoid having to work with separate versions of a product, do it. No questions. Having to manage multiple versions between the sites would be a headache that no one as swell as CC deserves.
IMHO. :)

Yep, that's correct. So yeah, you'd be a Donor for a while if you donated that amount. It's a while, I know, but I think LBP's got some legs anyway - I wouldn't be surprised if this site was still active years from now.

That's a good idea, to allow people to say where their money goes. Putting aside the technical benefits of 2 sites sharing the one upgrade, and bearing in mind that people can choose where their donation goes, couldn't you upgrade whichever site manages to raise the money first? You as moderator therefore remain impartial on that basis. If the LBPC community raise most of the money, shouldn't LBPC be first cab off the upgrade rank out of respect for that effort? Just a thought.

Thanks for doing the research and we look forward to the return of chat, amongst other things ;)

btw, CC.. why not do some other stuff to get more more money in?

I remember beyond unreal forums having some difficulties in getting all the money,
and they did various stuff to get more money.

I think there was an auction for various cool unreal stuff.
We could donate our old hardware and one of the admins sold them for a little cash.

we could buy a little 50/120 pix banner space for 10 dollars/months on the forums, since the bannerspace showed random banners from a library of banners we all would see our own banners a few times a week. (thats a lot of banners)

I for one, would probably pay 10-15 bucks a month to get my banner on the forum so more people might play my levels/watch mine and adi's tutorials.
(just know, not all of us have credit cards/paypal so maybe something like "Ideal" might be handy. (Ideal is a dutch paypal like thing, but for your bankcard, not the creditcard.. so you dont pay any extra fee's for donating money/buying stuff)

you should check around some other forums, maybe see how they implemented banners etc, or talk to some other forum admins and ask how they do it.
(I do not know how experienced you are with mod/forum stuff, but you are doing a great job so far!)

if i come up with anything else, i am sure to let you know!

Like some other members on here, I have no interest in MNR. However, we must bear in mind the amount of work that goes on to maintain BOTH sites, and anything and everything must be done so that CC has the resources to continue doing what he does so well.

This upgrade sounds like a great idea.

LBPC is almost my home on the internet - and all homes need maintenance to keep them going!

Therefore, my maintenance fee has been sent ;)

Well, my books were really cheap this semester, so... $50 sent. Don't tell my girlfriend!

I share the same sentiments about MNRC, but I understand the hassle that would accompany using two versions of vBulletin. I hope these changes are worth it, and you better make it look all spiffy! :p

IMHO. :)

I also worked as a programmer for a number of years (not 20!) and I had to maintain a variety of applications that spanned many different versions and languages. I continue to do that as daily web developer, so I understand where you are coming from.

However, in my opinion, this is the equivalent of asking all of my clients to purchase the same software so that there is the same quality among all the sites. While that would be great for me, unfortunately, that's just not how it works. Some of my clients are smaller organizations who don't need certain features and it'd be a waste to spend money on something they don't need. Other clients have very successful sites and better software, hosting, etc. I guess I am looking at this the same way.

My concern here is that $285 dollars is a lot of money to invest into a site with less than five times the active members of LBPC. What if that number never increases? I'm sure there will be a bump when MNR is released, but I just don't see it having the longevity of LBP. Because of that, I am hesitant to invest into that community. If I am wrong and MNR garners a huge following... then I think the upgrade seems appropriate. As of right now, I feel it's premature and frankly, unnecessary.

I actually totally agree with you on this except for one huge difference - you are paid to manage what you do, Confused Cartman (as far as I know) does all of this work on his own time. That was all I was really trying to get at - that if we can make it easier for such a dedicated "volunteer" (even if it's not the most ideal or practical in some other senses), I'm all for it.

That being said, $285 really isn't a lot of money, all things being equal. I just spent half this amount last night to take my sons out for dinner, arcade games, and laser tag for my youngest boy's birthday. just sayin'

I was specifically referring to MNRC and it's relatively small membership when I said it was a lot. I think it's completely reasonable for an update to the software and I think LBPC is deserving of it. Just wanted to clarify. :)

:) I like to think I'm a good dad... I surely do love dem boyz like I never knew I could love, y'know?

Actually, while it was fun, I rather thought the laser tag was a bit of a rip-off. But only because it was a ridiculously short game. They say 12 minutes, but the 20 or so of us in the arena all agreed that it felt more like 5.

Isn't this contradictory? If you won't update one site before the other then surely it makes no difference if you specify where you want your money to go to.

Surely it doesn't matter which side of the pile the money sits if nothing happens until they reach the $570 collectively?

Well, if we ended up with more money on one side than the other and that extra money was donated specifically for one side only, then I would get in touch with those who donated it and ask what they would like to do - let us keep it for something else or have it returned to them. That way, if you donate but you don't want your money going toward a site you won't use, it won't. Does that make sense?

Alright, small update: We're currently in the process of transferring the LBPCentral license over from lbp to myself, and I can't say for sure how long that will take (no more than a day - possibly two, but I doubt it). I didn't anticipate we'd raise the money that quickly to be perfectly honest, but I am thoroughly grateful for all of the contributions and we will be on our way very soon. :)

I have respect for the donators.
especially for spooky and inc.
seriously, 100 or more? to be honest, there should be a bigger bonus of some sort other than lifetime donor.

Agreed. 100 dollars is alot these days, especially in this economy. Hallf of Fame, gents?:arg:

That's very kind of you to say so, but let me tell you a very short story...

Since February last year when I joined here, I've met some seriously wonderful people from all over the world. I've had so much fun reading the forums, contributing to them, and playing some of the very best levels on LBP.

I'm nearly 40 years old, and this site makes me feel like a teenager. Believe me, you can't buy that sort of feeling!

And any amount of money seems like a lot when you don't have it, or if you have no way of getting to it, so for me it's a small price to pay for having fun and feeling happy.

:)

^ Yes.

This site has kept LBP fresh for over a year and probably a lot more in the future. I can't buy that in the little big store.

This place is much more than a website. LBP just doesn't seem complete without LBPC.

If you could do me a big favor in return...

Could you sticky my complex shapes tutorial thread? I really think it's helpful and sticky-worthy and I'm still adding bits and bits over the weekend. It took me a ton of time to make.

This is exactly how I feel about this site. I love it here. I've never spent so much time and energy on one internet site, and the people I've met have been fantastic! For these reasons, I have extended my donor period with another small deposit!

We don't sticky tutorials (otherwise, we'd have a mess of stickies!) but I've taken a look at it, and I will happily add it to the Tutorial Spotlight (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=116367#post116367) sticky. Thanks for putting so much work into it, it really does appear to be a great resource! :)

EDIT: I've added it in. Again, thanks!

The thermo guide is stickied because it's general and helpful enough to deserve it's own sticky - almost every Creator would want to read it. Same goes for the Odd Censored LBP Words. I'm not sure what you mean by Ranger's Cool Pages guide - it's not stickied as far as I can tell. In any case, unless a tutorial is above-and-beyond useful (as in, any and all Creators should see it), we don't sticky it. I'm not trying to put down your guide, but if I stick yours, I'd have to stick every guide as useful as yours, and suddenly we'd have ten or fifteen stickies to deal with.

Well done everyone - it's great to see everyone pulling together.

I'd like to say just one thing: I would NEVER have donated a single penny to this site if I didn't think it was totally worth it.

The amount of time that me and the missus spend on here, together with the enjoyment it brings, is priceless.

In fact, because the partnership of LBP and LBPC is so good, Cartman and his community have probably SAVED me money in the long run, as I haven't had to buy tonnes of other games! That's honestly not a joke!

Keep up the great work :)

This is kinda of my logic too. While it was not possible for me to donate anywhere near the amount some people have been able too...(poor student!! ;)) I figured that this game has been played over a year pretty constantly and that is in no small part down to this community.

The amount of times I've not been bored because of this forum is uncountable, and therefore if it wasn't here...I'd have been been bored and that equals going out and spending money!

I visit this site every day without fail, I don't go on LBP everyday without fail, so it shows how much this community means to some people. It is bigger and better than LBP itself...(well no, but you get my point) :)

We're still waiting on the license transfer before we begin the upgrade. As of now, lbp (the original founder of the site) owns the vBulletin license to LBPCentral, and we initiated a license transfer to get that license transferred over to me. They're very strict about transferring licenses, so they do a lot of investigation into both parties before they transfer the license over. I'm not sure when the license will be transferred over to me, but I'd say sometime today or tomorrow the latest.
