View Full Version : Dissolve without Dissolve - A Tutorial on the Best of Creature Brains

Do you ever find yourself needing an object to 'dissolve', but you hate using creature brains? This tutorial will show you how to use a creature brain to dissolve something, even though there is no apparent brain attached to the object!

1. Make a block of dark matter, and then glue a different material to it.

2. Attach a brain to the new material.

3. If you want your object to be able to move before dissolving, put elastic from the dark matter to any point on the object. Set the strength of the elastic to 0.0. This will allow your object to move anywhere throughout the level without any resistance. If you want your object to simple stay still/hover, attach rod onto the dark matter and your object. Make it stiff, of course.

5. Take any switch you want out and set it to 'one-shot'. Attach the wire to the brain, and VOILA! You have an object that can dissolve without any apparent creature brain attached (or hideous creature brain noise, ick :p).

Yer still using a brain m8, it still gives pts to the players, and it still takes the amount of thermo brains require, no?
The thing is you said "If you hate using creature brains" not "If you hate putting creature brains directly into the object" :p

I mean i'm not saying its bad, just that its pretty much the same as placing brains on the creatures.

Tho i guess in a way its better kinda. :)

Ah i see, if you don't like their look you mean.

Tho if so could one not just hide them inside or behind whatever needs destroyed?

Umm true, i guess yer right, indeed this can be useful if you don't want dissolve material and/ or can't hide the brains indeed. :)

I believe this uses much less thermo than demitters.

Not if you use a 1-time demitter, which consists of a single emitter. It will take up far less thermo across the board than a brain, a piece of elastic, and a couple of offscreen objects.

Also, but killing things with a brain, even an offscreen brain, looks kinda tacky and it does give points, which makes it feel so much less clean. What you may wish to do is kill the brain with an emitted paintball, which suffers from a really weird bug where it almost never gives out points. Killing with a hazard also doesn't pay out, if you want the hazard effect.

Where demitters actually suffer is not on the thermo but when the object itself is emitted. It gets messsy at this point although there are ways around it. Falling back to the cow/material properties glitch is not a bad option in this case.

Holy crap! Rtm is part snake! That explains the eyes, and the fact that he hides his face!

Back on topic, I don't think I've ever had emitted paintballs refuse to give out points. In my experience, they seem to give points to all players regardless of who is firing the emitter (which makes sense of course: it's not like the game would track the paintball to the emitter and then through whatever logic there is and back to the player holding the grab switch). Then again, the only time I've really paid attention enough to notice was in my own levels, meaning they were paintballs from my popit that I had originally fired from my paintball gun, so maybe that's why it doesn't refuse to give points.... maybe.

To clarify, firing an emitted paintball at an unprotected creature brain often fails to kill the brain. See this thread (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?23557-Emitters-brains-points-and-lots-of-bugs-() for more details.

Any material connected to another material with a brain will disolve...they are considered one object. May as well attach the brain to the main object and use 1-shot to save on vertices.
