View Full Version : Very big LBP idea

This one just came to me. I had seen some ideas from people that were interesting, and after some thinking, I thought it would be cool to make a level, that goes through the entire history of mankind. Now, the first half I would detail the events from the bible (I'm offended by what school districts teach kids in public schools about the origin of man), but after that, I would put stuff in like the great crusades, to the renaissance, to the revolutionary war, and so on 'til the 21st Century.

This would be a VERY long level. What do you think?

It sounds like a good idea, but you are going to teach creationism through a littlebigplanet level? It isn't going to be too popular.

If I want to put it online for people to download, I'll probably cut out the scenes from the Bible, but I'll have the "uncut" version for myself and local friends.

I don't want to bring my beliefs into this, but be careful with religious topics on forums. People who are less cautious tend to break out into arguments over it. I used to frequent a forum that upheld a strict no-tolerance policy for any religious topics, and it worked out well. I'm just trying to say, be careful what you admit on a website, especially when people are completely anonymous.

Oh, okay. Yeah. I'll be sure about that.

Thanks.

No problem. :)

It does sound interesting, but I have another idea that you may prefer:

How about you make a series of levels dedicated to different eras of history? Like Medieval, the Enlightenment, ect. That would be cool, and since each has its own level, you can do more with each era.

I came up with another idea. It is actually an expansion of an example I saw in a trailer, where sackboy was running through what looked like to me dugged up tunnels. So I thought I could make a maze sort of level styled like an ant hill, with the tunnels going into the ground.

Also interesting, but if you are gonna make it a maze with dead ends, make sure to hide some goodies. :D

While exploring the maze, you migh just come across a stache of...those...sponge things? (I forgot what they were called, they're scattered throughout the levels that you can collect)

But yeah, there'd be tons of stuff to find.

Thanks. Plus, after watching that demonstration of the game at the Sony E3 conference, I'm trying to come up with something that I could use it for in presentations.

Be much more entertaining than Powerpoint.

So, for original ideas, I've got the history of mankind, and an anthill maze...hmm...so many possibilities.

stone age/ bronze age/ middle age etc! Brilliant! I can have a different costume for each level :P and it would make a good series. maybe incorporate a loose time-travel/ ancestor story in it!

Alaska_Gamer

Okay, I got a basic idea of how the level would be set up. There would be a very large backdrop of whatever sort of material with scenery, and for stuff like people or objects would be pieces of material glued and painted onto the backdrop, as well as little obstacles that fit with that theme along the way.

That's the basic setup of the level pretty much.

Any particular events in mind?

Well, I suppose that's the basic setup for any LBP level.

Any particular events in mind?

There would be the crusades, so it'd be kinda Assassin's Creed-ish, only 2.5D platforming and no...well...assassinating. Jump around the buildings and see knights down below.

Then there could be a scene with Galileo holding a telescope. Sackboy could run up it and try to jump on the overhanging planets to traverse a gap.

Then there would be museum looking place displaying different art and creations that were made during the renaissance.

Then there could be the first Thanksgiving between the pilgrims and the indians. You would have Sackboy run across the table, jumping over the food and stuff.

There will be so many events displayed, but their segments wont be overly long, So, they'd only take up possibly 3/4 of the tv screen at minimum.

But that's still a few of many scenes that'll be in there.;)

bbroman

Fall of the Roman Empire, perhaps.
French Revolution, complete with a guillotine.
Industrial Revolution. Maybe the background or look of the level would change to a more urban look.
American Revolution. If water's included, a Sackboy could cross the Delaware.

This level, or series of levels, could be epic.

I've got to get back up to speed on the Roman Empire bit. I haven't learned much about before, but I'll do my research.
Ah, yes, the guilloteen. There could be a trigger that when you're under it, it falls, and you have to hurry out of the way.
That's a cool idea for the Industrial Revolution. You'd be seeing smoke stacks and factories in the back ground.
And LOL, Sackboy becomes the next George Washington. Once you get on the boat, pose as it goes down the river.

Thos are some good ideas. And yes, this could be epic.

The Underground Railroad. Run across the field to the northern territory at night alongside the slaves for freedom.
World War I. Jump your way over the trenches in No Man's Land.
World War II. There will be two segments to this theme. Pearl Harbor, where there are cardboard cut-outs of explosions, then, hop into a U-boat and you'll arrive at Omaha beach, and you'll have to run up the beach.

A few more ideas.

The Great Wall would be cool. You could knock it down with a giant slingshot or catapault.

Building the pyramids. They'd be like half-finished, and sackboy would have to find the top, drag it over, and put it on top. When that happens, a door to the next area would open.

Frank-the-Bunny
08-02-2008, 01:23 PM
yah the American Boats used in WWII are called Higgin's Boats and what about like a 10,000 B.C era type level?

Alaska_Gamer
08-02-2008, 04:06 PM
Interesting ideas. I like the great wall of china one. I had a sort of idea where theres a scene showing the mongolions beginning a seige on a walled city, and you would be launched from a catapult to get around.

Oh, and thanks for the name of the boats, kmills.

Alaska_Gamer
08-02-2008, 04:51 PM
I got some more.

There would be a cut-out of henry ford along with the Model T car. Then you would find the wright brothers with their first plane. Basically these would symbolize the start of the 20th century.

bbroman
08-02-2008, 04:58 PM
Prett cool, especially if you utilize the smokestacks. The entire level's complexion would change, and you'd instantly know why, with a car right there.

There could be the invention of the lightbulb, too. Maybe a bulb would be hanging over a gap, and you'd hold onto the cord that turns it on to swing across.

Thanks.

I'm taking the ideas me and some others have just come up with. and the rest will be blank, and we could suggest some different events in history. I plan to have 100 events shown at max.

So many possibilities, I say :)

Alaska_Gamer
08-02-2008, 09:31 PM
OK, so here's the list so far.

1. The Crusades
2. Galileo
3. Renaissance
4. First Thanksgiving
5. Fall of Roman Empire
6. French Revolution
7. Industrial Revolution
8. American Revolution/Delaware River
9. Underground Railroad
10. World War 1/ No manís Land
11. WWII/Pearl Harbor
12. WWII/D-Day
13. Great Wall of China
14. Egyptian Pyramids
15. Mongolian Siege
16. Henry Ford/Model T
17. Edison/Light bulb
18. 10,000 B.C.
19. Declaration of Independence
20. Emancipation Proclamation

The last two there I just thought up of earlier, and the level idea has now reached the one fifth mark. :D

Marino

You should definately include the evolution of mankind first, then a Neanderthal/ cavemen level, and then migration out of Africa. THEN you begin your list. :)

Alaska_Gamer
08-02-2008, 11:21 PM
Uh, well, I'd rather not make it look like I support the evolution theory. These are just snipits of events throughout human history.
I've decided the 10,000 B.C. part will be the starting point, where theres a caveman pointing his club to the right of the screen, signalling you where to go, and then some prehistoric landscape, just for kicks.

You wouldn't go through a physical transformation, you would just witness the various stages of human development. An overly simplified version is here:

YouTube - The Simpsons - Homer Evolution

And a much more realistic version:

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

And I'm restructuring the list. I figured there could be more than 100 historical events shown.

Marino

Maybe each level can have 10 major events? That way we don't have to limit ourselves in the number of objects & space in each level.

Alaska_Gamer
08-03-2008, 01:37 AM
Hmm, that's a good thought. We'll have to see how much we can put on each level once the game is released.

Until then, I'll gather some significant historical events.

Alaska_Gamer
08-03-2008, 02:26 AM
LOL same here.

Restless nights, HERE I COME! :D

Okay, so I said earlier that each little scene from one of the several time periods would take up 3/4 of the tv screen. The PS3 at my home is connected to a 1080p tv, so try and picture that. Now, the 1/4 bit will connect each scene, where it will look like the scenes are sort of "blending" or mixing together, to show progression through history. I think it would look pretty cool.

Frank-the-Bunny
08-03-2008, 02:27 AM

I'm sad I haven't posted in this thread since it took off. :(

I definitely have to say that there needs to be more than one level, especially as more gets added to the list. Each event should have a decent amount of attention spent on it, so room could become limited.

Oh, and one I hadn't thought of before - Vikings, funny hat and all. Not sure exactly how it would be implemented, but the idea of a Sackboy in the hat...

No need to be.

Alaska_Gamer

Good idea. This is one thing we should all work on.

And looking at the wikipedia article I was providided on the timelines throughout history, I've planned out how multiple levels could be done if we cant fit them all as one big level.

First would be from the Stone Age right up to before the start of the Middle Ages. Basically Ancient History.
Second would be the the Middle Ages right up to the end of the Early Modern Period.
And Third would be the start of the Modern Age and through Post Modern.

Anyway, I got an idea for my part of the project. This one is during the space age in the Modern Era. Since we all know about the moon landing, or as some call it "fake moon landing", I came up with something cool. The moon will be a large circle with a bolt in the middle, so you can run around ontop of it like you are running around the whole moon. Plus, you'd get to see an astronaut with the American Flag.

And to finish off the final level, the finish line will have a scoreboard, but it will be part of a movie theater, so you'll see seats and and other things.

Yep, there is! Just name a part you are thinking about doing so people aren't planning to do the same part. However, like I said before, more than one person can work on the same section at the same time, so up to 4 people can work together. (I'm not trying to be contradictory, I hope you know what I mean!)

Also: can everyone put their PSN names in their signatures so we can add each other?

Thanks Mariono.

I'm still working on convincing my dad to let me make a PSN account. He thinks I dont need one because I already got my wii connected to online, and PS3 is being used as a sort of family system (DVDs and BDs).

I'm sure to get my way soon. ;)

I've planned out how multiple levels could be done if we cant fit them all as one big level.

how do you plan to do multiple levels?

I plan to a whole series of levels based on the indiana jones movies but i want to keep the detail in thire by having one level for each important scene. But how do you make people know that you can continue into another level? My idea is to figure out how to make the scene pitch black and then have a to be continued sign drop down with info on how to go to the next level.

They have a key system, I think, where when you finish one level, you get the key to play the next. That ensures that they are played in the intended order :)

They also have a key system for the private levels, wherey ou have to give the keys to your friends

Another idea along side this could be Biblically based, with levels based on all of the Bible stories. Regardless of religious beliefs I think that would be entertaining too, and kinda in the same vein as this history of man.

Well, it's free. Is your PS3 not connected to the internet, or does he just not want you to get a PSN.

BTW, do you have a list of all these? That would make it a lot easier to keep track of stuff. If not, I can start one.

Marino

We have a vague outline at the links I posted, but to my knowledge we don't have an official one. A list would be great though!

Also, I like the Bible idea even though I don't believe in any of it, it would still be really cool! But we should probably have a separate thread for that since this project is intended to be historically accurate.

But I'm sure to find a way for him to let me do it. And dont worry, I've been putting all these ideas on a list.

Good list. :)

The biblical events will be a seperate level. I'd rather not have an atheist or someone else complain about it and have it taken it down, so, it's not gonna be open for everyone. The rest of the history of man levels will.

The biblical level will be private, and people will have to ask for the key for it if they wanna try it out.

Still, thanks for keeping the list in order. I'm currently working on some fan-art for LBP on my deviantART profile. I'll sketch out the ideas listed and try to show you guys.

Okay, sorry I haven't been on as much. I've been having a big case of Okami addiction, lol. So you know, one sketch is nearly done. Expect it sometime by Saturday (because I'll probably still be playing Okami...a lot)

Oh, and heres a smaller idea that came to my mind. It doesn't have anything to do with the level, but it's more of a custom object.

To explain the idea behind this, I'm gonna be part of my school's yearbook commitee this year, because frankly, our yearbook covers SUCK. None of the people on the commitee ever make it, so they get a pre-made cover and just have it made for the yearbook. It's unoriginal, that's why I say it sucks. So, thinking about how I would make the cover (I'm one of the very few artistic people at my school), and I had previously planned to do the cover in GIMP, but then, LittleBigPlanet came to mind. So, depending on what theme is chosen for this year's yearbook, I'll make the cover on LBP.

Sounds cool, yeah?

Ditto. It's a shame. All my friends have 360s. All are fanboys, too. I can't even talk about a game anymore. I was talking about LBP to one, and he loved it until I mentioned it was a PS3 exclusive. He then said it sucked. Oh well, outside of Halo and Gears of War, they really don't have much. Besides, both are on PC.

Exactly the same. I hate people who are so shallow as to say that.. I had a freind who was like that, but x10 worse, and he'd go in a mood if you said anything about the PS3 being good.. It was pathetic. And then he asked me "Can I come over your house 1 day so I can try it out before I buy one", it's like WTF?

This one just came to me. I had seen some ideas from people that were interesting, and after some thinking, I thought it would be cool to make a level, that goes through the entire history of mankind. Now, the first half I would detail the events from the bible (I'm offended by what school districts teach kids in public schools about the origin of man), but after that, I would put stuff in like the great crusades, to the renaissance, to the revolutionary war, and so on 'til the 21st Century.

This would be a VERY long level. What do you think?

AWESOME IDEA.

I will play it for sure.

Why not cut out the religious sections and instead make a level over thousands of years. Start by having a water like section (I know there is no water as of yet) to represent water life. Then go through the jungle as we turned into monkeys. Then into caves and parts like that for cavemen. Then into huts and mudhouses. Then into old style homes. Then lastly, walk through the city. Each 'zone' can have it's own 'fear'. So in the water can have sharks or big fish. The jungle could have lions. The huts and mudhouses could have diseases or a plague. The city could have moving cars that kill you. I dunno, its just a basic thought.

Put a bunch of dinosaurs chaseing you or sumthing, then as you pass under a big rock a huge explosion kills them all and there is a smoldering metiorite on the ground and all the dinosaurs are gone. so you have to make a mechanical squirrle or something mammilian to move on to the dawn of man.

This just struck me... Ever seen the history of the earth? parts 1 and 2?
Just do everything that is in the movies... its hilarious! like my spelling...
