Episode 56

Hello again, folks! It's that time again... spotlight time! We have another set of wonderful, marvelous levels for you to play. We hope you enjoy them!

A few matters to attend. First, we welcome back UmJammerSully, who underwent a long hibernation and transformation (he used to be ChazOSulls)! He jumped back in willingly, playing levels left and right, being generally very helpful. He's a welcome (re)addition to the spotlight crew!

Second, there have been some worries and speculations about what LBP2 will bring for the Spotlight. We still have some minor tweaking to do, but rest assured, most of it has been figured out. Experimenting with the new features of lbp.me and level-linking has given us many ideas. We hope you enjoy them as we implement them over the next few months!

And that's that! Go play some Little Big Planet!

PS3 Spotlight

The Machines that Feed on Our Dreamsskumchunk/skumchunk
http://ia.lbp.me/img/bl/03a7a9b7ac8fcadf020026cd4ce1e0ebf6baf13b.pngIn the land of the machines, great power is given to those who are willing to follow the rules without question. What happens when the rules are broken? (view on lbp.me (http://lbp.me/v/v3xyzx))

It's been a while since a level so consistently stylised has graced our spotlight, but today here we see a prime example of simple mechanics with superb execution layed out within a charming narrative. Simply brilliant stickering really brings the characters to life and the entire experience is almost incomparable to most silhouetted levels in terms of the context created with colours and shapes. I'm very happy that this came out now, with the advent of LBP2 on the horizon, to show that fresh levels are still possible with a 2 year old game. I look forward to seeing what Skumchunk does with the sequel :)An original premise, beautifully stylized and incredibly polished. A perfect example of one of those rare levels that exceeds on all fronts and creates a truly memorable level. Whilst it's true that this "silhouette" style is often mimicked, you won't find a level with quite the same atmosphere as this one, mostly thanks to the level's clever and unique narrative. It's not just a visual treat either, as the platforming is both simple yet incredibly tight. Close to flawless in my opinion, and a great start to 2011This level has truly unique visuals. Theyíre fantastic, almost Saturday-morning-cartoon style, and make full use of the silhouette lighting. Itís really quite something. The shading, especially, is perfect. I found myself smiling at all the little details. The characters are great, fun, and just a little goofyóperfect for Little Big Planet. Battle the two antagonists all the way to the end, where things become cheery and bright, and all becomes well in the world!Levels with a real artistic twist are often the ones that stand out from the crowd, and this level by skumchunk stands so tall you can't help but be impressed! A consistently engrossing and entertaining atmoshpere pollished off with a fun storyline and some strong platforming really make this level something special.

Chihiro's Gardenladylyn1/ladylyn1
http://ia.lbp.me/img/bl/a4ad3d78168816d47b4bef712e5302d63eb9be2b.pngAt night, when Chihiro stops playing with her toys in the garden, you are free to explore the magical world she has created within the bamboo. A short and challenging platformer. (view on lbp.me (http://lbp.me/v/w9njev))

Classic ladylyn1 style and finesse shines through on level as he pushes the traditional LBP concept of a level 'theme'. An almost 'neon' red bamboo garden is laid out with bridges and and lanterns scattered through the landscape. Come and enjoy this wonderfully serene level and appreciate the craft of this talented creator. Chihiro's Garden has a great ambient atmosphere acheived through some clever lighting and a very suitable BGM choice. Don't get too chilled though as you'll need to be on your toes to avoid the abundance of well-placed spikes and other hazards whilst making good use of the moving neon platforms around the level. Whilst a little short for my tastes, this level has definitely still earned a spotlight.Great gameplay elements make their appearance; this garden holds a great combination of jumping, spikes, and charging platforms. But where this level really stands out is what you see. Itís simply beautiful. Bamboo grows everywhere, and the red-blue lighting scheme is extremely well done. The materials are chosen very well. Itís a very peaceful level, yet a blast to play, so check it out!Ladylyn1's sublime garden is about as magical as they come. A perfect fusion of neon lights and asian architecture will have you admire this level's every turn. And while the visuals speak for themselves, the platforming is no slacker. Expertly designed and always amusing, the fresh game play will have you sorry that this gem is over so soon!

That Search for More Skillsmorris6267/morris6267
http://i3.lbp.me/img/bl/cd340cdaa61f01c5481794beea57f030df659a3b.pngYou are the only one with some skills and it is up to you to get some more! Go on some adventure to get that beaver of skills and give everyone some skills somehow! (view on lbp.me (http://lbp.me/v/w-jzgc))

A genius level in it's own rights with regards to narrative. A lengthy jaunt this one, as you carefully navigate your way through the undergrowth as many other sackfolk contemplate their own inadequacies. This level is interestingly paced, where at first you are given ample time to traverse the spikey tree roots of death, but then as you reach the end and nearly achieved your goal, you'll find yourself suddenly thrown into the thick of it and running and swinging like your stuffing depends on it! A very curious level indeed, but well worth your play.Like most great levels, it's pretty clear that the creator has put a whole lot of time and love into just making the level look fantastic. With some strategically placed stickers and some superb shaping of the landscape, Morris has created a great woodland level that easily rivals the look and feel of the main story levels. Lots of great platforming segments too and the Metroid-esque scuttle back through the level at the climax caught me by surprise and was a lot of fun. There's also a lot of baffling dialouge throughout the level but also some lines that got a chuckle from me, adding a layer of charm to an already well-made level. This level is very... different. I laughed, and I laughed a lot; the sense of humor was just right. (A beaver of skills, anyone?) And I thought that would be this levelís only strength until I kept playing. Itís really quite pretty, stickered just right, and the greens and blues of the lighting are great! And just when I thought humor and visuals would be this levelís only strengths, I kept playing and found the gameplay fun too! Thereís some good wobble-bolt action going on here and some must-have point bubbles thatíll tempt you to the point of committing suicide. (Does anybody else actually do that? Or just me?) At the end is a delightful twist involving a complete turn-around! I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and you will too.A humourous premise, lots of funny moments and some great visuals and game play make this level worthy of your time. It's light hearted narrative and fantastic climax speak for the author's skill as a creator. Just be sure to find that skill you're searching for, because you're going to need it on the way back!

Frigid Facade L1GhTmArE/L1GhTmArE
http://i8.lbp.me/img/bl/7e8b3bfa7bf18f5c34772f7d7fa496b45acfc1fb.pngHey all! Coming here with my last level for LBP. Its a winter theme story level series where the King and Queen is in a bit of trouble but Sackboy is here to save the day. I went back old school so it has some tricky parts and doesn't have many infinite life checkpoints. (view on lbp.me (http://lbp.me/v/w-k6-g)) Frigid Facade IISabre_/Sabre_
http://i4.lbp.me/img/bl/444d96632a2d7dc75d2c8e50733a6e9de828c77f.pngAfter exploring the underground well underneath the castle sackboy finds an elevator which leads him room located on 1st floor of the castle. What threat lies ahead as he ventures through this massive castle? (view on lbp.me (http://lbp.me/v/w-rxbc))

An impressive pair of creators indeed, the mighty L1GhTmArE and the emphatic Sabre_ come together yet again to blow you away. Pairs of creators tend to push eachother above and beyond what they would normally create and be happy with, but what do you get when both creators are already pretty dang good anyway?
Well, take a heaped spoonfull of great puzzles, a sprinkling of narrative, a large slice of physics based platforming and you'll end up with this amazingly tasty, level-cake-metaphor thing going on that you'll want to keep playing 'till every last crumb is gone!Prepare for a challenge... infinite checkpoints are rare! Yet, at the end, itís so much more rewarding because of it. I wasnít expecting another dose of humor in this spotlight, yet there it was. A dynamic duo of creators combines forces to create a superb, short series of levels (amazing alliteration intended). Blast your way to and through the comically pathetic snowman guards to save the castle from the evil snow man boss. The fights are fun, the gameplay is good, and the visuals are valuable. If you want to play a couple levels that are better than my alliteration, Frigid Facade is the place to go!Another pair of astounding levels from two top notch creators end LBP1's last full spotlight with style. There's lots of fun to be had with these two levels, as they're stuffed to the brim with delightful game play and cool visuals (literally.) Yep, there's no doubting it. It's another hit series from L1GhTmArE and Sabre_. Can't wait to see what you two cook up in the months to come!

Also from the Showcase...

Coffee Cakeeagerneph/eagernephhttp://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Spotlights/PSP%20Spotlight%2056/2011-01-09-021.pngShort, sweet fun. Like that first bite of Coffee Cake. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50C8757aUAo

Levels this fun are what LBP is all about. Engaging gameplay and crystal clean aesthetics. If you have been playing LBP on PSP for a while you have probably stumbled across The Color of Music on the community moon. It has been on page one of the highest ranked levels for months now, and rightfully so. Eagerneph has a great style of gameplay and platforming that will have you hooked and begging for more. Pass the coffee, no sugar though... this level is sweet enough.Right from the very start of this level you know you're in for a tasty treat. Sink your teeth into delicious platforming, rich puzzles, and the spicy goodness of spike pits. This level is especially scrumptious for those interested in shooting for the top score. Another slice please.Beyond the great visuals of this level lies a deeper, altogether more impressive amount of fun gameplay and new challenges. Traversing spikes, pulling levels and grabbing sponge will be the key features of this level, and that comes from someone who much prefers tea.EvernightWertpol/Wertpolhttp://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Spotlights/PSP%20Spotlight%2056/2011-01-09-020.pngPart 1. You wake up in a dark city. You don't know how you got there. And you don't know how to escape. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvjMbEleXf0

This is one of the most unique levels I have ever played on LBP. The strange beautiful environments created by Wertpol will have you wondering if this a PS3 level. The corner editing and character designs are some of the finest I have seen, with a thoughtful, meaningful story. Here's hoping for a part two.Stylish, brooding visuals and an intriguing story are sure to draw you into this level as you load it up. Things get more and more mysterious as you work your way to the scoreboard, and by the time you get there you'll be as ready for part 2 as I am. Must... find... out... what... happens... next! After over a year of levels in LBP PSP I am still amazed at some things people create, and this level by Wertpol is one of those level. Some immense visuals and clever gameplay await you if you download this level. One you should not miss! The Kookey CanyonThe-Questor/The-Questorhttp://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Spotlights/PSP%20Spotlight%2056/2011-01-09-019.pngJourney up and through this crazy canyon with a little sack-tastic platforming!

The-Questor makes a spectacular Spotlight debut with this feature-length platforming adventure. Encounter loads of, well, kookey puzzles and challenges in this.. uh, canyon. Let's not focus on the details. The only thing that matters is that this level will stay on your PSP for a long, long time. It's excellent!A strange, weird, and wild journey awaits you in The-Questor's latest level. Abnormal lines and camera angles abound and accompany some impressive gameplay in one of the most uncommon levels will you see on the community moon in some time. The title says it all..... this is one Kookey Canyon.A unique combination of materials is rare this late on in LBP PSP, but the word kookey will certainly come true when you download this level. An impressive blend of visuals and gameplay are apparent from the very beginning and continue throughout some puzzles towards the excellent climax.
S! Ancient Templehphzq966/prstuhttp://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Spotlights/PSP%20Spotlight%2056/2011-01-09-017.pngEnjoy an adventure through an ancient temple two months in the making. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6C9eW96mFlc

prstu has become one of my favorite creators, and he amazes me with this one. Make your way through the ancient temple solving puzzles and hunting point bubbles in cleverly located hidden spots. Wonderfully made, this is a one of a kind level from a one of a kind creator. We've seen great things from prstu before, and that trend continues in a big way with this jaw-dropping masterpiece. Technology meets archeology in a flash of brilliance in a way that can only be described as: Whoa, cool. You owe it to yourself to play this one. This level feels almost realistic, and the main reason is the immense architecture along each corridor and towards each challenge as if it had been thoughroughly thought out and created from scratch. The gameplay suits the beautiful environment and you'll son find yourself waiting for another level from prstu.A Winter WalkFastbro/Fastbrohttp://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac207/tross13/Spotlights/PSP%20Spotlight%2056/2011-01-09-018.pngDay 6 in the 12 Days of Christmas Saga. A Festive Stroll through a Winter Wonderland leads Sackboy to the location of a missing present. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXAGjx5dZK8

Isn't Christmas over? Not according to Fastbro, and the community is lucky for it. Gorgeous visuals courtesy of Fastbro's patented style with some great gameplay thrown in the mix. The platforming in particular shines throughout in another awesome level that Fastbro can add to his already stellar catalog.Who says the 12 Days of Christmas are over? This really is the gift that keeps on giving, and this time around it's Fastbro and his elves that have put this one together. Tip-toe your way through a winter wonderland dotted with amusingly obvious signs on your way to an elusive, missing present. Thank you Santa Fastbro.Fastbro brings in the 12DOC Saga, and despite being after christmas it's warmly welcomed! The visuals will have you gawping and the gameplay leaves nothing to the imagination - it truely carves this level a little spot within christmas levels, right at the top.Played everything in the PSP Spotlight and still looking for more?

Congrats to all who made it in this time around. On a side note, I thought Obsidian Depth was an excellent level worthy of a full spotlight. Anyway, can't wait to see what everyone makes in LBP2 in the coming weeks. Im sure the creators of this site will make some genius levels.

If any of you guys have LBP1 levels to finish before release comes out, be warned that the spotlight team is going to be so entrenched in LBP2 we physically won't be able to put the LBP1 disc back in, so we'll be retro-playing them through LBP2.

If you have the contrast turned up in the colour correction it'll be worth turning it off to nothing, else it'll be too bright in LBP2 :P

Congratulations people, some great levels coming out even this close to LBP2. But remember, LBP1 levels will still be spotlighted once LBP2 comes out - we won't be forgetting it!

Thanks for being so awesome spotlight crew while I take some much needed abstinence from the game of LBP - I'll be back on the job when LBP2 comes out (naturally).

In nearly every way, LBP1 levels do look better in the sequel. The anti aliasing, the shadows, it's all gourgeous. It's just the colour correction isn't calibrated the same.

Anyways, that's just my prediction on what'll happen and not a team decision :P

I know this may not be the right arena for this asbestos... and perhaps my timing is poor, but you supported the spotlighting of my Great Tree Prologue... you should look, just at the opening scene in lbp2's engine... and try to convince me some more.

LBP1 and LBP2 are two seperate entities...no matter the popular spin of '3 million shark levels...built right in'... i've said my peace...

]...and to bring the ship about[/I]...

I hope you all understand the respect I have for your service to the community... but from a ps3 community stand-point... this is yet again another relatively meager selection of levels @ (for all intense purposes) FOUR with some glaring omissions...

Loch, Triple, Metalhead, Anposteller... I could go on.

As you can tell by my sig were trying to bring some AWARENESS back to the level showcase... where 'Cool Levels' is now like a "Rest-home for the Aged". That's made doubly hard when our own spotlight only features 4 levels.

Although I can't comment too much on specific levels that have/have not been included here as I didn't help with this one, I can tell you that we only spotlight levels that we feel deserve it. Obviously, level showcase activity is likely to be less proactive as it usually is, as we're in the "dead zone" before LBP2, so that's probably why the spotlights have been shorter. We don't want to change our quality standards simply because there is less activity.

As for differences in LBP1/2 graphics, we'll be able to tell if the level was made in LBP1 originally, and that can be taken into account when we decide if a spotlight is worthy.

:p

Well, Antposteller's level is of the highest standards around. I agree with Gravel on this one that it's an "omission". But hey you guys should accept the different opinions on the spotlight, it's not possible to please anyone. If anything, it might push you into surpassing yourself ( I mean the spotlight team here).
In short, stay positive!! LBP is about love.

Tks for another spotlight telling my lazy butt what to play, I love this.

Well, Antposteller's level is of the highest standards around. I agree with Gravel on this one that it's an "omission". But hey you guys should accept the different opinions on the spotlight, it's not possible to please anyone.

Just to remind y'all;

OUR SPOTLIGHT CUTOFF IS THE WEDNESDAY BEFORE POST
(we are supposed to post at the weekend, but we keep having problems reaching that deadline, which is why you got a midweek post like this one, sorry again!)

Therefore the following levels are on the potentials list for next spotlight;

Ruins of Albion - Metalhead_as
Tree of life - Preview - Anpostteller
A salty space adventure : Save the girl! - Mnniska

So yeah, calm your hackles!

Congratulations to everyone spotlighted, I'm happy to see there are and will still be quality levels in LBP as we move into the LBP2 OMGICANHAZSACKBOT/VOICERECORDING/MUZIC/GRAPPLINGHOOK level onslaught season.

I also think it is a great sign when you can see in lbp.me that the top 10 trending levels in game are all the standard mix of hit, miss or hack while the trending levels online are all nearly this Community Spotlight.

Cheers to the hard working spotlight crew who put this all together.

I'm really not the whining type, but I'm pretty disappointed Cause & Effect 5 didn't get any mention. I worked on it pretty regularly for over a year, thought it far surpassed 3 and 4 (which did get a spotlight) Eh.. I guess they're getting sick of em.

I would also like to add to this. First off, I am in no way saying you are doing a bad job because that is not the case, I really do appreciate the work you put into these spotlights. But...
Maybe you shouldn't really be that strict with the levels that get in, there were some really great levels and it is kinda disappointing to only see 4 (or 5 actually) getting spotlighted (for PS3, I haven't been on PSP in a while). I know you shouldn't make it too easy and just have 20 levels there for the hell of it but I do think some good levels will be overlooked because it seems only the extreme very best of the best levels get in. Maybe you should also consider levels that could get classified as very good. I haven't really followed too close these spotlights but I really think the line where the levels get spotlighted and where they don't has gotten a bit too hard to get over.
Also, I really hate to say this but it has been bugging me all day... was my level really worth no mentioning, and also if you would like to add you could say what it could have had so that it might have had a chance to get in (so that I know for future stuff, I really would want to have a level here some day :p)

But yeah I guess it's up to you to decide what you do, I really haven't followed too closely so I might also be way off here but at least I said what I wanted to say.

Well this is my personal opinion and does not reflect the opinion of the rest of the spotlight crew but I really feel like I've seen those Rube Goldberg-type levels hundereds of times before and whilst yours was very impressive on the technical side, the nature of the level means I was just really bored watching it and couldn't honestly recommend other people to check it out.

That's the very reason we have the "nods" at the bottom, to recognise the levels that didn't quite make the cut but were still worth a mention. I understand that it's frustrating to put so much effort into a level only to not have it recognized but the fact of the matter is that the spotlight crew didn't consider your level up to spotlight standards. You could argue that our standards are too high but judging by 90% of the feedback, I think we did a fair job.

Please do not be disheartened by this as it certainly doesn't mean your level was bad, as it wasn't. The best thing you can do is take in a lot of feedback, improve yourself, refine your work and try again with a new level. I can't speak for the rest of the crew but if you would like me to give detailed feedback on your level and perhaps highlight some of the reasons it didn't quite make the cut for me at least, then PM me and I'll be happy to when I get the chance.

DEPRESSION, didn't got in this time either :( Congratulations to the spotlighted...people though!

Seems there was an administrative error in this case. Yours has been added to the list.

Okay, that cleared things up :) I guess there will always be someone who is just below the standards to qualify, it's not easy to say where the line should go.
Also, I'll send you PM because I know my level isn't perfect but I haven't received any major criticism for it either which makes it hard to know what to improve.

I'll get you next time, spotlight crew... Which will probably be in 2014 knowing my creating speed

I'm super excited to see that my level got spotlighted!
I have to give a shout out to <3lynstigator<3, aka my wife, for all of her help.
She hasn't done any official creating of her own in LBP, but is always there to tell me if my ideas are cool or lame.
She also helped a lot with the dialogue.

Thanks again, and CONGRATS, not only to everyone that got spotlighted, but to the LBPC community in general, for making this an awesome place to trade ideas and criticism.

See you all in LBP2!:)

You could argue that our standards are too high but judging by 90% of the feedback, I think we did a fair job

90% of the feedback for spotlight episodes is the fawning of newer members seeing names in bright lights for the first time, regulars patting each other on the back, and people trying to stay on the good sides of whoever's on the team at the time while a few make thinly veiled complaints that they didn't get in. The remaining 10% are genuinely happy to be supported & glad to see some new quality stuff to play.

I'm not sure if you're referring to me with that but I wasn't trying to stay on anyone's good side, or complain. I was genuinely surprised and upset that they didn't feel it deserved a spot. Just wanted to get it off my chest is all.

@Triple

No, not you and nobody in particular. Think of it as a running gag with an occasional punchline. I'm like the Comedian in Watchmen & I've seen the same spotlight reactions for a couple years now.

I really enjoyed the latest Cause & Effect. It was nice to see a staple of LBP1 sent off with a bang. Don't sweat it 'cause this isn't the last word on quality and if Obsidian Depths is only a nod, then up is down and left is right... and nothing is spotlight worthy in bizarro world.
