Merging items are a useful way to adding better design to your levels, one of my favourite things to do is to merge backgrounds for scoreboards to add more detail and decoration.

So here's how you do it:

Step 1 - Place both objects you want merged beside eachother

Step 2 - Place a Material tweaker and tweak the object to be 'Indestructable'

Step 3 - Place a piston from the Left Side of your first object, and connect it to the Left side of your Second Object

Step 4 - Place a battery on the piston and change its Input Action to Fowards - Backwards, then invert the action.

Step 5 - Tweak the piston's minimal distance to 0 and your object should be merged!

It takes some time to get used to but it's a lot less laggier than the original merge tool, and you can do it with 4 people in a level if you wanted to!

Hope this helps :)

A lot easier than the laggy merge tool eh?

No, because the laggy merge tool allows for more precise positioning. It also takes less time to use.

How do you make the laggy merge tool?

How do you make the laggy merge tool?

It's just a ton of overlapped materials, which you can make like this...

Glue a block of either DM or LM to a block of any other material except DM, LM or hologram.
Emit about 300 copies in the same location.
Pause the simulation and delete all the blocks of DM/LM.
Capture the remaining overlapped blocks.

You can only use it when the simulation is paused, else it explodes, and as long as it's in the level, you can move objects so they overlap each other, but only when grid mode is disabled.

N.B. this worked fine in LBP1, but I haven't tested in LBP2.

The old merge tool I had from LBP1 doesn't work in 2.

The merge tool which I picked up from an lbp1 community level still works in lbp2. It's the one like a glass square with a smaller square cut out of the centre.

Weird, is it the same one I have a tutorial set up for(sig link below)? Mine still works though. Maybe you made your own?

in lbp2 it seems to not allow as much stuff in one screen so the merge tools can really makeit difficult, notice u get the ! way easier in lbp2? it can be annoying :(

My merge tool still works (it's the arrow-shaped one), though my friend says his doesn't. The only difference between us that I can think of is that I have a slim PS3 while he has an original PS3. D'ya think that could have anything to do with it?

Oh yeah, thanks, nice tutorial. This way I can merge objects on grid. Thanks for the helpful tip.

@ comph, works fine for me.
(though in the beta there where a few moments where I had to put down two compression tools)

Dont forget that if you want to move an object in from the left to the right, the compression tool needs to be on the left side.

Theck and thack now also have build-in compression tool :)
want to merge some thack, just put some theck on the left side of the thack object (overlapping), and you can merge thack into thack.

@ aya, compression tool also works when unpaused as when you placed it it wont move untill you close your popit.
one downside of it is that anything that is not glued, will just fall down onto the level edge (bots will fall through as well).

this however is very handy in complex rooms, and you want to know for sure you glued stuff to DM/LM or grav-modded it into place.
Just place a compression tool, keep it selected and see if stuff falls.
just rewind and glue the forgotten object.
