Thanks to dorien, we have very, very good evidence that you can use images from your hard drive as stickers in LittleBigPlanet. Here's the post:

Is this proof that you can still get pics off your hard drive or just miss informed
Found this on the Edinburgh Interactive Festival official guide that i downloaded online. I highlighted the bit in yellow

No more worries about using stickers from your hard drive! Thanks dorien.

does that really say you can use pictures from your hard drive? all i see is that it sais "content" as in maybe other things like certain contrations you made in lbp, or blueprints... i'm not sure this gives a 100 % answer.. it would be good to ask the guy we are interviewng strait forward, Are we going to be able to use pictures from our hard drives to make stickers, and etc?...

It would be incredibly STUPID for them not to allow images off the hard drive, and I don't think we ever had anything to worry about in the first place. Its just promoting the PS EYE to boost sales before and around the launch of LBP. They have to do it, I'm 99% sure which is sure enough to promise you that I will eat a shoe if they don't.

There's no way to be that certain. It's a coin toss whether you can or can not upload your own images into the game. I take neither of the sources for anything legitimate. Not the Sony rep, nor this edinburgh pamphlet.

It makes perfect sense not to allow third party stickers without EyeToy. But it would also be an extremely community-friendly move to actually allow them. There's pros and cons in either choice, so saying that you're 99% certain is lying.

Linque, I won't be eating any shoes. However sure I am is my business and not for you to call me a liar or tell me not to have an opinion/assumption without cold hard fact... I appreciate the 'help'.. but lets face the facts;

-Nobody has every explicitly said that we CAN'T upload from our hard drive
-Playstation EYE sales aren't as high as sony would like (Few games support it)
-It's a community based game and gives us what we want
-The given article, after stating you can upload content from your Hard Drive, immediatly gives an alternative method, heavily suggesting that the 'content' is images.
-Lastly, media molecule have said that you can't import items into the game, you have to use the in-game tools, another heavy suggestion that it is infact images.

Sorry for doing the 'mad' smiley too.. ;)

But the whole mention that you can actually import something from your hard drive might be incorrect. You can't be sure until it's official. Pamphlets like that can always be wrong. Of course, they can be right as well.

The thing is, Media Molecule have shown consistency in their determination to keep as much of the game within the limits of the game engine itself. That is, no outside music, no meshes. No external stickers would just be a continuation of this. I see it far more probable than 1%.

My opinion is that you take that one sentence in a pamphlet as a verified fact about the game, which it might not be. I hope it is, as well. I'm just hoping you guys won't become too disappointed if it turns out for the worst, as you seem to take this for granted already.

I'm just having conversation here. What's the point of voicing your opinion if you don't want it to be examined and possibly questioned?

It was harsh and pretty unthoughful for me to say that you're lying, what I was trying to say that I believe you to be incorrect. For that I apologize. Yes, I respect your opinion, I just don't agree with you. The last reply I wrote was in no way meant to be offensive, and it really isn't it in my opinon, either. I was just trying to point out that the Edinburgh pamphlet might've had misinformation iit, as the ability do import images from your hard drive (or importing anytihng else from your PS3 hard drive) hasn't been mentioned *once* by anyone in Media Molecule since way back near the GDC reveal, nor has any of the demonstrations showed any import features for example in the main menu.

It really surprises me that you guys are so sure that this feature will in fact make it. Have I missed something that makes it apparent that it will in fact be possible to import your own images?

oh stop with the hissy fits... were here to share ideas, not to call each other liars, or defend eachother! WERE ALL FRIENDS HERE!

as for uploading images through the hard drives, i think think were pretty set and sure that we can get pics off our hd's... i agree that sony is trying to highten ps eye sales right before the lbp launch. and honestly it's working. that's why people are buying them "just in case" and honestly... i might buy one too ( yep, sorry, it's a just in case ;) ) and that's why nobody in sony or mm will flat out say "you can get pics from your hd, and use them as stickers and other stuff like textures" or something similar.

so i think we can rest easy, and get some sleep now!

Man, I wouldn't buy a PS3 Eye before we get confirmation either way. The thing is pretty useless really unless it's a must for LBP. I've got one due to acquiring Eye of Judgment, but I've really not usen the cam much. Don't like apparels like that.

My advice would be to wait until someone actually official says anything one way or the other. It's not like the Eyes will run out after such an announcement. After all, the quality of the images you can get by importing pics from PC is so much better than those taken with the Eye, that you'll be more inclined to use the PC pretty much always. Not to mention the ability to add transparency to the stickers on the PC (I presume the PS3 Eye images will be squares).

No need to rush, friends. ;)

That's what I'm worried about, and have you noticed how when you take a pic with the camera and then stamp it down it looks all wishy washy (sort of faded) hope they do allow you to import pics from your hard drive so so don't loose any quality

Again, this could be taken care of with moderators. I know that it would be hard to control, but if they don't catch one, a company would complain and they'd take it down. I afraid of the same thing you are, but I really don't think Sony should do it.

I understand why we can't use our HDD for textures and pictures, makes sense to me. But the eyetoy is going to be pain to use for this purpose. I would like to see 1 a new eyetoy improved for us. Or maybe a website to where we can post textures we want, create them on the PC and send them for approval to use.

Yeah that would suck, I doubt they would right now. But if this is the only way to create stickers. Than I can see something better on the way, if the community is asking for it they will most likely buy it. I can see how sony wants the eyetoy to be used since it has done that great. This will provide a reason for more people to buy it. I just hope down the road something better comes out for us to make stickers, either a better eyetoy or a camera of some sort. Or a website we can put our stickers we want.

Sorry, Linque, that doesn't really make perfect sense. They've often maintained, from the start of the game, that you could import images from your HDD. Plus, the complexity and size difference between a jpg/png and an mp3 is huge. They're incredibly different, so you can't just say that because they aren't doing one they won't do the other.

Linque
08-17-2008, 12:02 PM
They want to keep everything within the limits of the game, with as little external content as possible. How does that not make sense?

EDIT:
It's not about file size limits or format problems. All of these features, be it mp3s, jpgs or pngs is really trivial to code. That has never had anything to do with having HDD import available. It's that they don't want it to happen. They want to keep everything original, to keep everything custom made instead of imported from wherever.

Btw, I don't understand this line: "the complexity between a jpg/png and an mp3 is huge". Could you please elaborate what you mean?

EDIT2:
Early on I doubt they didn't really give the feature that much thought, so they said that it would be possible. When they started to think about all the consequences, problems and drawbacks with importing images, they probably decided it is better to cut the feature off.

I know the code has nothing to do with it. But you can't simply saying because they do X then they'll do Y and have it make sense. Particularly with every inside and out of the organization mentioning image importing, people have every right to be upset.

Still, they have plenty of good reasons not to include it.

People just had unrealistic expectations if you ask me. But that's how the cookie crumbles.

Outside of copyright infringement, I can't see what that would be. And you'll still get that en masse; the community's flagging and moderators will get most of them. Even if they don't, once a company notifies them that their logo is being used, then they'll know where it is and take it down.

I can understand it, I guess, but I disagree with it.

I'll make one summary of all the reasons I can think of. Later on it'll be easier for me to point out to this quote if someone asks why. :)

Reasons image importing from the PS3 Hard Drive would not be a good idea to Media Molecule:

1) It would multiply the number of copyright infringements substantially, causing a lot more moderation work for the community team.

2) It would offer an easy way out that many users would rely on when creating levels, essentially degrading the quality of the user-made levels.

3) It would increase the size of the user-made levels, causing a lot more strain on the servers.

4) It could alienate some level designers, when skillful people or teams would make incredibly good looking levels with a lot of work creating custom made stickers. Some could feel like it would take too much work even outside the game to match some of the better levels.

5) It might take away from the atmosphere and uniqueness of LittleBigPlanet's levels, making them more generic and closer to other products than being true LBP creations.

Those are the ones that I can think of. Also, from Sony's point of view, this might boost PS3 Eye sales. But that has nothing to do with MM.

1) Valid argument. Ways around it, but still works.
2) I'm afraid I don't understand. How is importing images an "easy way out"? Compared to what?
3) PSEye pictures take up more Kbs than imported pictures. Although, fewer people have Eyes, so I guess it's a valid argument, but still a crap move by Sony.
4) I don't understand this. So great level designers will be mad because they aren't as artistically skilled?
5) Meh. Personal opinion that I disagree with.

I don't understand that. Youtube has tons of videos from users showing all sorts of products and, they generally don't get pulled unless it's something major like someone trying to upload Dark Knight or something.

People put up fan sites and fan pages all the time and places like google (googlepages), yahoo (geocities) and so on, don't get sued for copyright stuffs. Please, someone, enlighten me as to why, LBP would be treated any differently.

Probably because the content is being created through only one outlet giving copyright douches the opportunity to sue Sony or Media Molecule. Games are still a closed corporate area for user generated content. The internet has long been the bane of copyrighters/corporations because it's free and uncontrollable, that's why there are companies trying to limit the internet and segregate and divide it's accessibility up. There's bills like this being put towards parliament all the time, so far though they've been knocked back but I only see it as a matter of time if we get complacent and one gets through.

I don't think it will. Despite you attributing that point to me even though it was Linque, I agree with you that this shouldn't be treated any different.

A question that i find is relevant to the subject. On Steam the game counter-strike there are so many levels, skins, pictures, and music posted on levels and characters and so on. I have not heard of steam or Counter-strike team being sued for the copyrighted images and music that is on the levels. So why can't sony be able to do the same. I mean steam isn't as big as sony but if a person sued them they would be able to get some money that is if they are actually liable for the online server of user created levels. I feel them doing this is restricting the creativity not making sure it will be orginal. I am a artist i would of liked to draw some images to post on wall strictly my art not something i am stealing from others. now i gotta use the eye to take a picture that looks like a polaroid picture doesn't look as nice if somehow smoothly placed. but there will be level based off movies and other games that is the truth. some guy will think it would be fun to do and i feel if they want to they should do it not restrict them to something they have to think of themselves especially since there is basically no idea someone hasn't thought of or used before so just have fun if someone wants to make a zelda level or mario he or she should. sorry i went off in a rant there

So out of this ramble the main question is why can't LBP do what CS does all the time?

Very good points. I don't know why Sony's doing this...actually, 99% chance says it's money. Increase PS3 Eye sales, then make this paid DLC later on.

I don't think Media Molecule would be like that. They're doing it for the fans - so it must be legal reasons.

But no other website does it. Binary code made a few great points.

Mm doesn't really have the final say is my guess. And though Sony > M$, they are still greedy sons o' *****s.

if it is a legal issue why have other game companies that offer level creation get away with copyrighted material but MM can't?

Do they have direct image importing from their hard drive?

look - i'm not saying that that's the reason. But at the moment it's the most plausable one.

well spray painting images onto any level is easy as pie but also only temporary as for adding it on a map i never made a map but i assume it is just as easy to post on the walls of a map you create.

MM is being a tease it seems I have read that they themselves made a Super Mario Level 1-1 in LBP and now they made a level that is based off line rider.

if the reason they don't want to use it because of copyrighting then that is kind of a cruel joke. oh you could make these levels but we won't actually let you.

cool. unfortuanatly html code doesn't work.

To embed a youtube video.... find the code for it (in this case t688DOPCIi4) and put [*YOUTUBE]t688DOPCIi4[/YOUTUBE] but without the star.
The result:
t688DOPCIi4

and that line rider level ROCKS.

I made the original post when i found this article and did say i wasn't 100% sure even then as the people at Edinburgh Interactive Festival probably wrote the guide themselves on what they thought they knew.

Yeah i do think we should change the name of this thread now as it may be misleading to some of our new members thinking were not in the know lol
