Nope. Exact opposite. Andrew Bird. Bet I'm the only one who knows who he is. Very different from most of what's on here. Early Coldplay (Parachutes, Rush of Blood to the Head) is money. Again, far in the minority.

Most people I talk to disagree. His newer stuff (Armchair Apochrypha (sp?)) is more moderate and likable, but some of the older stuff is out of some people's zone. Definitely agree about death metal and freak folk - much more acquired tastes.

I'm really into a variety of music; what I listen to depends primarily on my mood. Some of my frequently played [best-known] artists include:

Pearl Jam
NIN
Oasis
Soundgarden
Keane
Coheed & Cambria
Jem
Johnny Cash
Foo Fighters
HURT
Kanye West
Common
Joy Division
Rush
The Who
AC/DC
Coldplay

Honestly, this list could go on all day. I guess you could say I like a bit of everything - new and old.

Mark D. Stroyer

I actually have a philosophy on music:

Essentially, I like tons of a lot of stuff. Except almost exclusively old. Why? Because I have high standards. And I find that as a whole, older music is a lot more original, and a lot better, than newer music, which as a whole kinda stinks. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean that music being new automatically makes it bad and being old automatically makes it good. There are some new bands that I really, really like, just as much or more than older bands. But there's a reason they're called "classic." So anyway, to sum it up, I like tons of stuff from tons of different genres and times, it's just that I like the best stuff from each, not music that is just average. Or worse.

I specialize in the sixties and seventies, but know quite a bit all the way from the eighties back to prior to the turn of the century, and a good selection of the Classical genre. I pretty much abhor rap/hip-hop with a select number of exceptions. Hard rock has to be done right (a la Seventh Day Slumber) and not just for the sake of being hard, and not a chance for any type of metal getting by me. I emphasize the sound and musical part of music, because without the melody, you're left with poetry, most of which standing alone isn't very impressive. Lyrics can take a good song musically and make it into something awesome, but also take it down several notches, but the music is the central element. (Instrumentals, anyone?)

My top three:

1. The Beatles
2. Chris Rice (pretty close down, and depending just one-off from a tie)
3. MercyMe

And below that sits a lot of stuff that would be too confusing to organize. In no particular order except their occurance to me: The Eagles, Nickelback, Paul McCartney, Henry Mancini, FFH, James Taylor, Coldplay, Earth Wind & Fire, Johann Strauss, Chic, Blood Sweat & Tears, Steppenwolf, Chris Daughtry, Ella Fitzgerald, Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra, Johann Bach, and the list goes on. I know I've left out many, many different artists I can't remember right now, but this list works well enough for an overview. So is that convoluted enough for ya?

for a while now i've been all out movie soundtracks.

Indiana Jones
Star Wars
Wall-E
Blues Brothers

I'm trying to get ET and Close Encounters of the Third Kind as well.

I mainly like John Williams.

Other than that, LBP has gotten me into The GO! Team and Jim Noir. I also like The Arctic Monkeys and the Beatles.

Anything really from Rock to Blues that isn't really mainstream (cos i hate mainstream music)

I used to be really in to hip-hop so i like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, kanye west and lupe fiasco.

I hate all modern music that is classified as RnB because that Rihanna and Beyonce music is not what real RnB music is.

I like near enough every genre... except metal, I can appreciate the skill involved but it doesn't push any of my buttons. My favorite stuff seems to be either folk, hip-hop, baroque pop and electro right now.

Really like Annie, Blonde Redhead, Patrick Wolf, Sufjun Stevens, Kaki King and Cadence Weapon right now.

I like a lot of stuff. A large cross section of it can actually be found across the Rock Band and Guitar Hero soundtracks. Most of my favorite music is rock in one sub-genre or another, but I'll listen to a lot. I mainly find new music by getting soundtracks from shows I like. Scrubs, The OC, Chuck, Smallville, that kind of thing, usually give another good cross section.

My favorite bands of all time are Bon Jovi, Aerosmith and OK GO. Weird I know, but I like singing along! Also, can't get enough of "Gimme Shelter" by the stones at the moment.

You cannot generalise that ALL old music sucks or that ALL new music stinks. Old and new are not genres. There is no specific sound that old or new music can be identified as.
And it is all taste anyway. We respect each others views at LBPC.

and it is up to each listerners opinion do then decide on whether they like it or not.

Back on topic: I like very different music to my closest friends. They all seem to be into hip-hop, mainstream rock and r&b. I more venture away from commercial radio choosing what i listen to so i try and find music on my own.

I think music taste tends to have alot to do with the way your brought up and the people around you now. Also the year that it is and where you live (of course).

Yes, I said that as an overview, I find much more older music that is better, even though there are at the same time lots of bad ones, whereas today, there are still very good songs, but the overall jist comes down to average mediocre. I specifically said that a song being old does not automatically make it good, or a song being new automatically making it bad. Just that an overview means there's more in one, and less in another.

For example, I do not love all music from the sixties. A lot of it, I do love. But there were also a lot of songs that were just BAD. This is the same no matter what time period you go to. However, in some time periods there can be different ratios of good music to bad music, overall. I find that with more recent music, the ratio has dropped. I listen to, and like, a good amount of new music. But I like from other periods of time a lot more music than those of today.

Get what I'm saying?

There is no literal good and literal bad music. It is all opinion. You like music from the sixties and in that decade a lot of music that was made was stuff that fitted to your taste. As the 20th century progressed, less and less music that fitted your "good music" criteria was being made until now where the majority is music very different from your taste so therefore "bad" in your opinion. Because of this dilemma you have gone back to listening to old music not from the present that fits your criteria for music that you like.
No music is good or bad. It is liked or disliked depending on what criteria for "good" music you have.

Actually I like that song...:p

I like this song too...:)

just ignore the political preaching...wish artists could just make music and not preach...

heh, complete opposite for me, I like to respect bands before I listen to them. Serj is very good at putting out his views, his solo stuff was pretty good but nothing can beat his work in SoaD. SoaD are great. I also love Metallica, and that's about it

I pretty much hate all pop, rap, techno (anything along those lines [trance/rave etc] and especially emo (though I'm not all that picky with what I call emo, many call LINKIN PARK emo, I don't mind them).

Yep, that's me :)

When/if I ever get a band together I will probably play some sort of alternate thrash.

EDIT: seeing as there seems to be heaps of SoaD fans, anyone agree the Daron sounds horrible in Scars? I really wish he'd go back to SoaD, or at least regain his lost simplstic but genius riffs.

Metal. Variations sometimes, like Symphonic Metal, or Nu Metal (I'm refering to Linkin Park's songs before Minutes to Midnight, so you know).

Other types are J-Pop and J-Rock. Yes, even though I dont understand japanese, their music is awesome.

I've been listening to a lot of Pink Floyd music lately. I used to not like it because it was very strange to me, but now that I've become accustomed to it, I quite like it.

I like a fair mix of stuff, but I tend to lean more towards the alternative rock section when I go for a cd binge. I'd list a whole bunch of bands and whatnot, but I haven't copied all my music over from my old pc yet, and it's too late at night to think.

That said, my all-time favourite band is The Offspring, for they are made of win.

I like a little bit of everything. I like Nine Inch Nails (clearly), Dream Theater, Avenged Sevenfold, The Offspring, Boston, Metallica, Rush, DevilDriver, Widespread Panic, and Judas Priest. I guess I like hard rock/metal the most, but that's not all I listen to. THe thing that catches my attention is really good, technical instrumentals.

The more silent style (fade to black, Unforgiven 1 & 2 & 3, and the day that never comes etc.) of Metallica is great. Something from B. B. King would be great. Bruce Springsteen, Green day and Linkin Park aren't so bad either.
Some classic songs are also great, though I have no Idea of their names.

I like a lot of different genres, but my favorite are rock and metal. My favorite bands are bands that you've probably never heard of: Rush and Dream Theater. Oh, and I like techno, too. I really don't like country and rap.
