Hello again! We’re back for our next creation challenge, with a fun and friendly competition that will allow you to show off your level building skills and win a precious desired prize. This time, we’re out to crown LBP’s best choreographer!

http://www.lbpcentral.com/images/LBPCC-3.jpg

Enter and compete to win an elusive rare prize crown!

"One! Two! A One! Two! Three! Four!!”

Ok superstars, it’s time to get your groove on! The levels of craft earth have lost their rhythm and need YOU, the MUSIC MAESTRO, to help them get it back. After all, nothing livens up a dead party like a good soundtrack.
For this month’s contest, we want you to build a level choreographed (synchronized) to music, that is, we’re looking for levels that “beat” to your chosen music, or "sackronized", so to speak.

If you’re musically inclined, feel free to build a song in the sequencer, or if not, the included music sequencers are fine too. Then, set your level’s livelihood to the rhythm of the music.

How your level reacts to music is entirely up to you!

Here are your building requirements:

Create a level experience of your choice where contraptions, lights, and other special effects are synchronized to the the level's soundtrack and sounds. A little tip here if you're using the music sequencer is to set your music to 60 BPM (beats per minute) or 120 BPM, and match your contraption and sequencer timings to 1.0s or 0.5s intervals (60 BPM = 60 x 1.0sec; 120BPM = 120 x 0.5sec)
Score big with the judging crew by making as much of your level "beat" to the music as possible.
Choreography is important! Liven up your gaming experience with lights and other special effects.
Gameplay is unrestricted - any type of interactive game, whether it be minigame, platformer, or versus game is allowed!
Levels should contain 3-5 minutes of gameplay. Cutscenes are allowed, but we hope you synchronize within these as well!
No limits on the number of songs, it can be a short loop or a long epic, or more songs.
Do not use level links. Only single levels should be submitted.

How to Enter

Build a level before the deadline that fits the contest description and building requirements.
Include the text “(LBPC3)” in the level’s title. Don’t forget to add things like a nice looking badge, some tags, and a concise level description.
Publish your level before 11:59PM GMT on Wednesday, August 31, 2011.
Post an LBP.me link to your level in this thread, so we’re sure not to miss it!
After the deadline, the judges will put on their best band tee shirts and rock out to your sack-ronized creations, selecting up to ten semi-finalists based on the scoring criteria below. The highest scoring level will be crowned winner!
The Sackinima team will feature HD recordings of the three finalists on their youtube channel for the whole world to see!

Judging Criteria

Levels will be judged according to the following criteria:

Gameplay – Here, we’re scoring how well your level beats to the music, and things like fun factor, controls, and freedom from glitches and bugs.
Originality – How innovative is your level? What's unique about how you've choreographed it? Does it stand out from the crowd?
Visuals – This is all about how good your level looks. Especially for this contest, we're attuned to lighting and special effects. After all, this is supposed to be a rockin' party!
Audio – Sound effects and heart-pumping music are key to turning your level into a heart pumping, vibrant, and groovy experience! You're music skills will be kept in very good consideration.

Rules and Regulations

This contest is open to all ages and all regions. That means anyone can participate!
All entries must be playable in LittleBigPlanet2
You can only enter one level. Duplicate entries will result in disqualification.
The contest officially begins on August 1st, 2011 at 12:00am GMT. Previously published entries will not be accepted.
You can co-create with up to four people, but only one person should publish the level. Team member contributions should be listed in the level description. If you are publishing as a team, this counts as the only “one entry” for each team member, so you cannot publish on your own and as part of a team, or enter as part of more than one team. Note that there is only one rare prize crown up for grabs here, and it will be awarded to the PSN ID under which the level is entered.
Levels must be published unlocked and set to “Standard” or “Versus” in their gameplay mode.
Levels must be published before the deadline with “(LBPC3)” in the level’s title. After the deadline, do not republish. Levels republished after the deadline will be disqualified. Exceptions may be made for quick fixes with respect to level titles, description, badges, or major game-breaking fixes, but only with the prior consent of the contest crew. If you need to request an edit, please post in this thread and send me a PM.
Levels must be your own creation. Feel free to take inspiration from the world around you and from other levels, but don’t copy someone else’s work outright! That’s just not cool….

We particularly appreciate that every question regarding the contest is asked HERE in this thread and not via PM.
Remember that your question might be useful for another contender, so remember the friendly spirit of the contest and of the Community.

I have a question.

Why? Why did you all have to do this?

I was just saying the other day that the contests aren't really my scene, and you release a contest which I am frothing at the mouth over. Dash it all Contest Crew! My next month is gonna be jam packed with create time now!

I take it that any musical creations on the sequencer would have to preferable be original pieces? IE No cover versions?

OmegaSlayer
08-02-2011, 08:31 AM
Yes cover versions are fine, especially if you can spice them up :p

oooo, this looks really cool I think I may actually take a stab at this contest when I get back from my vacation mid august.....I even have a song to use for this (been trying to figure out a good level to use for it) one question tho, can we make any type of level, and can we use sackbots?

Any kind of level, but it must contain some gameplay, so full movie levels are out of question.
No building limitations, every tool and DLC are allowed.

You should try it out! It can't hurt anything, as long as you don't expect to win. I don't expect to win, I am just playing this game, contest, whatever... That the contest crew has made up so I can have FUN with LBP again!

We will try to please everyone's taste, so try to wait, the time to use your skills will come.

Did you start working on your level early then?

As you can imagine, nothing slipped, no one knew the them before it was posted here except of the crew.
But as you can also imagine, I get bombarded with questions like

Have you played my level yet?
When the winner will be announced?
What's the next contest?

I'm just hoping to not see any levels with overpowered seizure lights :s

I have played a few levels synced up to music and about 3/4 of them had OP lights and I couldn't even go through the levels due to the brightness (hint, hint, anyone?)

rialrees
08-02-2011, 02:08 PM
Who said it was ONLY lights you could synch to music? ;)

Let's say, I have plans, and they may involve Bo Diddley.

OmegaSlayer
08-02-2011, 02:15 PM
ALL the level must involve synchronization, that means platforms and everyting that has some kind of dynamics.

poorjack
08-02-2011, 02:25 PM
Well, my idea has been in the works for some time now, and I guess it is fate that it has just coincided with this contest, but here is what I plan on doing... Something along the lines of a diso-tech shoot em up, where your shots sync up with the music, and the intensity of the music will tell you how good you are doing in the level. Try to pretend like you are out at a club getting all **** wrecked, and gunfire goes off, but you are ok with it, because the DJ keeps cutting like a boss, and so you just return fire? lol.

The reason I post this is not to brag or be all over proud of my design, but to show that this isn't JUST a music game, or some psychedelic platformer contest. If I am right, it is a very wide and expansive subject with one unifying thing-- Music is the soul of this contest. The beat is should be the heart of your level, and the your level should pulse to the beat ;) Right, slayer?

Crrrraaaap, the awkward moement where a new round of LBPC crown contest, and I can't get to my PS3 untill 20th Aug x_x

Looks sick, anything you want to create like a film lvl, platformer. The example vid reminds me from a level called 'Lights and Shadows' made by scorpskull.
Wondering if i colud get that done and dusted...starting from 20th..

08-02-2011, 05:09 PM
So do we have to make our own soundtrack for the level, or can we just force others to make a 10-minute epic for us and craft a level off it? If so, should it be the composer or the creator to be the publisher?

(I'm just trying to figure out who I flock to this time :p)

OmegaSlayer
08-02-2011, 07:05 PM
You can make covers, and spice them up with your own musical taste eventually.
You can have people helping you with music, but we have only one crown, so the guys that helps must know it, and be fine to not win a crown with his stuff, since music this time is 50% of the level.
Remember that a good friendship is more precious than a Crown ;)

This doesn't sound THAT hard everyone, its just you really need to think out of the box for a clever level idea for this one, since the first thing that comes to mind is always Rock Band/Guitar Hero. And I'll bet you could even come up with something for this using the in-game music. A good example i can think of for this is Jaeyden's old Tye Dye 2 level from LBP1

Though I have to say this again a couple project ideas of mine i have been working on fit this theme, that old patapon engine i postponed and a minigame idea i have for my sackboy party.

Do me a favor Contest Crew and GET OUT OF MY HEAD!! :D

To answer TheGoldenFlash before the genius and very intelligent (what ? okay, i won't try to influence votes anymore...) judges answer, they can't participate because they are the judges!

And it seems lots of people want to take part in it ever if they... are bad at music. So I might have a chance since I'm not that bad at sequencing.

When the levels that are entered in the contest are being judged, will one judge play a level alone or more than one judge all play a level at the same time? I'm asking because online lag can make a level go out of synch with the music. The level would not be seen the way the creator wanted it to be seen.

I wondering that how come you need a sequencer if you can put bits of eletronics into the music sequencer? I may get this wrong because I havn't experimented with it...

Making music is a thing that not good at, ima make a music anyway because I should go in this contest, I gonna practice without giving up and if I get the music done, that my 1st music I ever made :D

Is it normal that a creator take a break, then forget about it, is it easy to abandon/delete the project? Cuz that happens to me all the time :(

You cant synch up very accurately by placing batteries directly on the music sequencer. One block is one bar, and you can only shift the battery by a half block, so in essence you can only synch music which has two beats per bar. If you're after a basic synch for some sections, then yes you could use this technique, but for the wowomgbbqthx effect, you need that little bit of extra detail ;)

Again, please don't ask via pm...question may be interesting for everyone, and you can allow all the crew to reply and not a single member, thanks.
Question via pm will receive a reply here anyway.

Hi there I have a question about the contest.. or a few questions. In regards to the level "beating" to your music and things happening does it have to beat at every single beat or can it be every second beat and can I create consecutive effects the beat to the music such as ***** one at a time to the beat over over and over again? And lastly the "beating" can be anything right? I can have platforms appear and dissapear to the beat for example yeah? Thanks.

I suggest you all to synch the beat with the drums, so keeping in mind what the drums pattern.
But yeah, a beat can also trigger a cascade effect, that you could be able to sequence back with music, it's up to you.
The "beat" can be a note, a drum hit or a noise.

If I may offer a friendly suggestion as well?

Synching to your drum rhythms is a tried-and-true way to create noticeable effects in a synced level such as this, but you may also want to think about segments of the music where there is a musical "peak" or "valley" and edit the lighting accordingly during these moments.

Wait, why am I giving away advice!!? This is a competition! Doh! ;)

120bpm is the thing you need the seq. to set to 0.5, but if you say set to 140bpm, you have to set the seq. to 0.3? and if you set to be 150bpm, is it 0.1?

What I don't understand is why people post that they can't enter the competition because they can't make music, or sequence well etc. Instead of complaining here, why don't you at least try to enter this competition, or practise. If you stick with that attitude, you won't be able to do anything. :(

just thinking about how much time my level Musical Lights took time (half spent on animation system, half spent on placing movie cams and mag keys on a sequencer AND music on it...) this is going to be hard (plus the times aren't precise so I guess we'll have to make some sequencers on music sequencers. Ouch.

In the OP it says
•Do not use level links. Only single levels should be submitted

I was wondering why? I can see it interupting the flow of the music, but there are ways to make it work. I was hoping to do an intro film and do the rest of the level as a sublevel. This would make it easier for me to make it longer and put more detail into it. Without links it really limits what you can put in, but it is workable ;)

Well, I weren't inspired about making a music, so I decided to take back a music I already made. It is soooo freakin long to do!!! I'm just placing logic sequencers on the music sequencer and placing tags on the logic sequencer and I am tired. So this is my list of tips:

=====>>>>> Use sequenced music or sfx music made with a logic sequencer
(remember to set all sounds to not positionnal)
The good thing of music sequencer: good instruments and songs, easier to make or find online, stable beat
Bad things : you need to place logic sequencers on your music sequencer and past tags following the rythm. plus if music lags, the current sequencer might be off beat.
Good of sfx music : you can place tags under each sound, waaay faster. And no trouble with sync between logic and music.
Bad things : less instruments, hard to master, tends to lose rythm when game is slow.

========>>> Make your music 120 bpm, and when you have a hard part to place tags, just set it to 30 bpm and multiply logic sequencer speed accordingly.

60 bpm=1 beat per second, 140 bpm is 1 beat per 0,42 secs...150 bpm is 1 beat per 0,4 secs
Quite hard to sequence, but doing it is SKILLXZ0RZs :p

It's called synthesis abylity, the skills of a creator are also about how he can manage to use the thermo and be flexible.
LBP2 spoiled a lot of people, making stuff too easy, and this is a challenge, so we will always put obstacles here and there.

TheGoldenFlash
08-04-2011, 10:19 AM
Yeah LBP1 was all up to you, so you needed stronger imagination for it. But in LBP2 bunch of zombie survivals made by total beginners and even get popular.
I like LBP1 better. a Good level isn't meant to be easy. But MM made LBP2 easier, because some people who cry about how hard is placing few materials, traps and obstacles, so they could make a level. I liked the first bomb survival. But then there came so many, that i totally hate it. Because they are so easy to make.

I'm still genuinely interested about a question asked a little way back, I'm fairly sure it hasn't been answered. Maybe yuo missed it...

Are judges going to be testing these levels in single player mode? Because it would certainly help to reduce lag issues etc which would possibly mess up the level synch.

It's something I'm now especially interested in as my music is becoming a bit more.... well let's just say not only the synch of the gameplay will be reliant on the music being lag free :)

I suggest to not use music offered as prizes, because there could always be some problems with the author.
So you should ask him the permission to use his stuff for a Crown Competition first.

Anywhom, I have a tip for all you guise-- Make a drum beat. Make it GOOD. Look at some popular pop, techno, dub step etc artists, and use a drum beat from them. Then design your level around that beat. When you are done with the gameplay, make a few different music tracks that changes as you go through the level and sync up with the drum beat. Then it doesn't get as repetitive. Instant awesome!

It's a competition about synching the world of your level with the music.
Now I don't see how this could fit in a rhythm game, but if you have cool ideas to do it, go on, it may be a key to win.

Simple diagram.
What we want is
Music > World Reaction > Gameplay
What a rhythm game is

Can't people read ? Must be a GAME. Must involve PLAYING a game. Must not be just a guitar hero clone. The music interacts with the environment making a gameplay. In GH, the music makes the gameplay and interacts with the world (light fx) but there is no link in GH between music-world interaction and music-player interaction.

A level where platforms move according to music, per example. Music interacts with world which interacts with player. That works.
A level where the player can play music ? Music interacts with player, not with the world.

Got it ? You can use someone else's music, but ask them before (tell them it is for this contest) and it is better if it is your own music.

if there are 60 beats in a minute, or 120 beats in a minute, setting a sequencer to 0.5 or 1.0 will sync with the music, making the music line up with whatever you want... trying it out is the best way to see how it works

And how am I suppose to know how many beats there are in a minute in a song i've yet to make?...
I don't understand what you talking about???
what sequencer? the music sequencer? and beats? isn't everything in music a beat? (o.O)
or are you talking about when the target sound you set that happens when you want things to happen?

Anyways I'm just gonna hook Tags on the music sequencer on the bits of the music i want stuff to happen.
And do i really need the target logic beats to go off so repetitively? does it mess up
the flow of the level to do it whenever in the music? I would think it depends on the music.

Edit: I'm not good with words when it comes to things like this.
so I'll show a pic and wait to see if you guys say it's OK or not.

He's trying to say that if you have a music sequencer set to 60 beats per minute, and a logic sequencer set to 1.0 speed (the duration of one beat), they should run synchronised. You can do this with a few other speeds, too:
75 bpm = 0.8 speed
100 bpm = 0.6 speed
120 bpm = 0.5 speed
150 bpm = 0.4 speed
But if you try to divide 60 seconds by a beat length of 0.9 you get 66.666 bpm, which has a fraction you can't deal with. Then you'd see the music sequencer and logic sequencer run out of sync.

ummm... err... oh your saying the logic sequencer and the music sequencer don't run at the same speed?...
well I'm not sure about that kind of stuff as i've never tried to Synch stuff in this way before...
so it all sounds like nonsense to me. anyways I'm not gonna worry about using logic sequencer...
as you see most things will react to the tags i put in the music ;)
but I'll make sure to Synch any logic sequencer i may use for whatever reason to the beats right
by feeling it out and watching it all work...

all them cold soulless numbers you shown me means nothing to me right now... :p

QQ! (Quick Qustion) would the judges look and favour a level that has its own orignal music? Or one from the LBP2 music?

The major point of the contest is synching stuff, that's why we picked that title.
It would be unfair to judge on music since it's a pretty subjective thing, so we will take in consideration the efforts of creating original music, but as I mentioned you could also build something just out of noises, the important thing is the synching.

Argh! Having a major tantrum with LBP tonight. First section looked good to go, until I put game cameras in and the whole lot started lagging lol! I think anyone considering building a level which is made of more than just holo/neon or VERY simplistic detailing is going to have issues. I forgot how quickly lag becomes an issue with complex synching.

lol well ive decided to keep my music simple, but hopefully it will be effective :)

problem sorted now thank lord. I chose to forget that I was using water material... as soon as it came on camera lag went nuts. However, If it wasnt a synch level, you wouldnt notice!

Hope everyone else is making good headway on their own projects too - cant wait to see what goodies you all have in store :)

I'm not the greatest creator around, but I can share some thermo effective tips.
I always build everything in cardbox and dark matter, (and dissolve in LBP1).
Then I replace the materials only when I've finished keep sure that I have at least 30% thermo left for materials change and stickers/deco.
That's how me and Miglioshin achieved to make a 40 minutes level in LBP1.

Hope this will help you guys :)

*Do not use level links. Only single levels should be submitted.

I never realized how truly evil the contest crew was until I started working on my entry and found out the first 30 seconds of gameplay takes up over half the thermo! I'll have to find some ways to cut back

This is gonna be an interesting contest!

Hi Fading Monkey,
I'm afraid this level will be disqualified as it has no gameplay at all. This is not what we are looking for :(
We aren't looking for a videoclip, but a level with actual gameplay synched to the music.
thanks!

I have a quick and simple question! I am personally working on an entry myself with two helpers on my team, though I normally make music in the sequencer to put up in my music gallery. I have a friend who decided to use a song from one of my prize bubbles in his entry for the contest, though I am not personally helping his team with their entry. Is there some secret rule that is going to come back and slap me because he decided to use one of my songs?

OmegaSlayer

I may be wrong but I think whoacoder may actually have been worried that he could get disqualified for having two entries if his friend used his music in another level in the contest.

If the music your friend is using is old, i.e. not created by you for this contest and if you're not actively helping him, then I can't see a problem :)

This was what I was wondering! The song is available for all in a gallery already, so he has permission to use it. \m/ Ugh.. The sync is the hardest part and I thought it would be the easiest... Just want to forwarn people that if your game has a lot going on, it will probably get out of sync.. Ive tried bateries on music sequencer, a timer, bateries on another sequencer and tried to sync it with the mucic sequencer and tags on both.. None of those work. :( It's extremely frusrating.

Music sequencers themselves get off beat.. Er.. the timeline will slow down and not even match up with the music blocks.. So sometimes having tags or bateries will trigger when the timeline reaches it.. So if its off then they wont trigger on cue :( I'm guessing its due to the gameplay laging the sequencer.. The sync works 100% fine IF your not actually playing -_- ... also I'm using the tags now.. Dont know why I didnt think of that before XD Goodbye gigantic, unnescesary OR gate!

your playing the game online right? meaning you may just be getting lag in general.
one reason why it's best to create offline at least half the time.

I see no reason why the Music sequencers goes off beat when it is what makes the music in the first place.
meaning everything is forced to be on beat at the same time unless your game is lagging.

Ok, I have never been musically inclined, who am I kidding I can barely play the RADIO! But some how ( through divine intervention I guess ) I managed to make some pretty sweet toons. One day while jamming out to my own special creation in walks my brother. I take off my sweet set of headphones and say hey check this out, I turn up the TV and un-pause my game to do a little showing off. Then all of the sudden the impossible happened! My brother gave me a positive response, but that was only the half of it. I realized through my TV's poor sound quality that 1/3 of my instruments were not even playing! That got me to thinking, what if everyone who had a poor quality sound system played my level and booed it simply because they could not hear all 7 instruments! Is there a simple fix or will I just have to hope for the best?:(

I've observed the same effect offline. If you put a battery on a music sequencer you can create a situation where the music starts playing before the battery lights up even when they're set to go at the same time. The line that indicates where the sequencer is supposed to be falls behind where it is in terms of the music. It is unfortunate that the music sequencer is not more reliable, but allowing music to proceed independently of game logic does make sense for the game as a whole.

To ensure it not getting off beat, make a reg. sequencer with 4 tags inside it, and only 4 stripes total. Repeat this reg. sequencer back to back every measure, and it makes a 4/4 beat.

Dortr

To ensure it not getting off beat, make a reg. sequencer with 4 tags inside it, and only 4 stripes total. Repeat this reg. sequencer back to back every measure, and it makes a 4/4 beat.

I have also done that. But what speed do you put the sequencer at? If you're being normal and using the recommended bpm (60 or 120) then you just use the recommended sequencer speed (0.5 or 1 sec per stripe). But what you're crazy (or stupid) and are too stubborn to change the bpm from a song that sounds the best at some other bpm(like 96). Than you just time how long one stripe is on the music sequencer (this is easy, you just have a time with a very large max speed. Make it start at the same time as the music sequencer and stop and the end of the stripe. Whatever the current time is, that's how long your stripe is). You take a timer with a max speed of however long the stripe is (at 96bpm it was 10s) attatch it so your sequencer that has the 4 tags and 4 stripes. The input of the sequencer should be set to positional. Make sure that the time repeats itself.
This worked perfectly for me, but one stripe on the sequencer was 4 bars. All you have to do is divide the time (10s) by 4 (2.5) and that's what you set your time to.
This (so far) has worked completely perfectly for me and I hope it helps you make better songs with awkward bpm! :)

Also, I'm pretty sure someone has said this before, but I think it's important. The music sequencer doesn't start for a couple tenths of a second. This will put your sequencer and music off right away, so it's important to realize this.

Have you tried to raise the volume of the single notes tweaking them with the right analogic stick?
Have you tried to set the volume of each channel in the sequencer?
Have you tried to pan some instruments to the left and right speakers to have a more definite and dynamic sound?

I have no idea what your talking about.
You people most be making really fast music and gameplay or something.
the level I'm making is NOT having any off beatness from what i can tell.
And i don't see how it makes sense to make game logic independent from the music logic.
it makes sense to not make them independent from one another if you ask me.

whatever lag you guys are talking about most be really small... something less then half 1 sec.
and that can't surely be enough to matter IMO, as overall it'll turn on pretty much at the same
times as the beats in the music.

if needed you could always also just turn the level logic on in the music just a bit
before the beat goes off, You know, giving the player little more time to do whatever.
meaning overall them spots in the music are little longer then it should look it need to be.

Wait, putting a regular sequencer on the music sequencer will align it to the bpm?

My limited work with sequencers on music sequencers is that they work like anywhere else in your level: you need to tweak the timing to align it with your music. Are you just leaving the stripes at a second per?

Wait, putting a regular sequencer on the music sequencer will align it to the bpm?

My limited work with sequencers on music sequencers is that they work like anywhere else in your level: you need to tweak the timing to align it with your music. Are you just leaving the stripes at a second per? Unless you want to do some crazy math like bob here. Its best to use the reguar sequencer on the music one. You must consider that if you have a regular sequencer on the music one, to keep it even you must have the tempo at 60 or 120bpms. Then, yes you can gave it at .5, 1 sec or 2 secs per stripe. Also @Sozo: You should be glad you don't have to deal with this problem. It seems like your getting mad at us for having it! Sometimes it can be significantly off even by 20+ seconds. If the track is sdt to loop it will always loop when the line gets to the end so if its off you can tell by the amount of silence in between a loop. In my prior version of my game it was silent for about 20 seconds meaning it was off by 20 seconds which is pretty darn noticeable and quite a big deal but yeah I know for a fact that its the gameplay in my game messing it up. Fast and a lot going on, but I wanted to keep it that way. Which reminds me.. When it was getting out of sync a bunch of people would neutral review and point it out (like I didn't already know), but anyways.. I just dont think its fair for normal players to review with what the contest is for.. To them it should just be another level and the sync is for the judges. Lol by this logic thats like netral rating cohesion or little big jellyfish for not having "mayhem" XD

Unfortunately, most TVs tend to have speakers with very poor frequency response, particularly below 100Hz. You almost always have to compensate in mixing, e.g. by raising the volume of the bassier instruments relative to the others.

Wait, putting a regular sequencer on the music sequencer will align it to the bpm?

No, but the theory is that if you use a single Sequencer, you'll never be able to find a play speed which will precisely match the BPM of the Music Sequencer (causing it to slowly go out of phase), so by using a large number of shorter-length Sequencers placed at intervals directly onto the Music Sequencer, the discrepency will be much less noticable.

That's what I thought. So, for the rest of you reading this:

60 bpm = 1 beat per second
120 bpm = 2 beats per second, or .5 seconds per beat.
240 bpm = 4 beats per second, or ~.25 seconds per beat.

To get more complex, you can use logic within your sequencer to delay, shorten or subdivide your beats even further using embedded sequencers, batteries and/or timers. I highly suggest comphermc's tutorial to figure out the math behind it all.

Check out the video at ~7:00m and around 9:00. :)

If you hook up an embedded timer to a sequencer set to positional, you can theoretically sync your level elements to a smaller scale than would be possible with a sequencer alone.

Edit: I saw that BobtheYoungFish stated this above, but comph's video shows the basics of how to do it in a bit more explanatory way.

Only the 7th instrument is going to be on the music sequencer, the other 6 I've been using a regular sequencer with the old school music from the sounds category. It's proven to be the most reliable in signaling the sound in perfect synchronization to the working object. It seems that if I were to fix it on the TV then it sacrifices good sound quality on the headphones, and vise versa. If there there is no other solution dose that mean I have to start all over with all music and devices on a music sequencer?

OK I'm re-entering (lol) with Fading_Monkey. We've taken down our little light show thingy and have created a lvl that fits with the rules of the contest.

Its almost near complete and we will be publishing it here http://LBP.me

Edit 1

man... I Forgot the password so this account is blown. BRB in like 30 mins with another lbp.me link

Edit 2

OK here it is (locked) but this is were it will be http://lbp.me/v/43wteb

And i don't see how it makes sense to make game logic independent from the music logic.

Are you familiar with the concept of a thread as it relates to computing? Basically, the idea is to divide up the work that software needs to do into smaller, parallel chunks. Each thread can work its way through the processor separately and in a polite manner. A big, resource-intensive thread can be prevented from hogging the whole machine and preventing some of the smaller, more critical threads from running at all. Modern technology provides multiple processors to make the whole thing even better: different threads can complete different tasks at the same time.

In a video game, you would generally want music to run in its own thread. Players will notice if music stutters even slightly so you would want to rig your software to keep it running smoothly no matter what else happens. Gameplay may slow down for a millisecond or three but the music will continue unabated. This is probably the best outcome one could hope for given the way that human beings perceive the world around them.

I can't vouch for the details of LBP2's engine, but the decoupling of the sequencer from its own music is there for all to see. It may be better to try it for oneself: take a fully scored music sequencer into an empty level, make an emitter that spams objects at an unreasonable rate, create a dozen copies of it, connect them to the sequencer, and start the music. You should be able to observe the sequencer falling behind its own song within a few measures.

Sorry for rambling on, but it is an interesting topic. When the game is very busy it gives up tiny amounts of time that we would never notice if not for our efforts to synchronize it with music. Even having a sub-sequencer per measure can't save us when the music sequencer is desynced from itself. Unless somebody wants to do things LBP1-style where every individual note is activated by logic, the ultimate solution seems to be moderation! Isn't that often the case?

:D

Umm No? (o_0)
I have no idea what that stuff your talking about is really at all...
How would i know how games work much? I know how to create in LBP... and that's it.

plus maybe it don't help I as a player have poor reaction time
to things in games... when i was playing in the level Stereo/Mono.
I did not use the music to help me when to jump or whatever. I did it by Visuals
and dieing and learning by overtime watching the pattens the things would move ETC.

So honestly It don't matter to me if everything is Perfectly on beat.
to me close enough even if it's a 25% sec off is close enough for me.

Maybe you'll see once my level is done that if it is good are not.
but for now I'm not seeing what other people's problem is.
*mew

and again I'll post a pic of my test song to show how I'm planing on doing things.

It's not just specific to threads - even in the days before multithreading or multitasking, programmers would have to make hard choices on the synchronization of events within an event loop. If a computer game needs to generate, say, 25 frames a second, but isn't able to generate a particular frame in the required 40ms, should it wait till it's done, or just drop it and move on to the next one?

Players will notice if music stutters even slightly so you would want to rig your software to keep it running smoothly no matter what else happens.

In most cases I'd agree, but it might've made more sense to synchronize the music to the framerate in the case of LBP, otherwise it's a complete pain for creators to produce, well, the sort of levels which are required for this contest. ;)

You should be able to observe the sequencer falling behind its own song within a few measures.

TBH, I'd previously speculated that the Music Sequencers weren't synchronized to the simulation framerate (based on the fact that the notes clearly weren't quantized to 30Hz), but I only just tested it now. I made a quick n' dirty one-minute track, placed some Sound Objects on the same sequencer, and let it play while making several copies of a rather complex logic probe object. By the time the music had finished playing, the line on the Music Sequencer was only halfway along.

So if you want a decent level of synchronization, I guess you'll either have to be really careful with how much load you put on the simulation engine, or ditch the Music Sequencer entirely, and stick with Sound Objects on a regular Sequencer.

So honestly It don't matter to me if everything is Perfectly on beat.

...and 30 seconds off per minute? ;)

TBH, it's a somewhat extreme test-case, but even a fraction of a second per minute will be very noticable after a few minutes.

Hmm i guess I'll just have to deal with it when i get there...
but i don't get it... 30 seconds off per minute? you say that almost as if the longer the music
goes on the worse it gets? shouldn't it have the same amount of being off beat every bar every time?
after all when the line in the Music Sequencer hits whatever is on the bars it'll make it turn on right?
*mew

Edit: No I take that 25% delay I said back.
I'm not getting any delay whatsoever. I tested out by hooking up
a tag sensor to a light. as soon as the line hit the tag in the Music Sequencer
the light perfectly turned on, no delay. and turn off with no delay.
I used my test music again the song lasts for over 2 mins.
and i listened to it repeat two times. and never saw a delay with the light
turning off or on~

So I really don't get what delay you people say you get from doing it this way...
I'm little confused.

Yeah, I'm with you here. I have the greatest sympathy for the developers and the implementation they've chosen... but it is not our friend right now. :(

Yes, for everything except instrument parts. It's as if the game pre-renders the music data to a continuous audio sample, then just plays back the sample, ignoring the placement of the parts on the music sequencer during playback.

Ok... well look at my edit:
I was wrong, I'm not experiencing any delay.
I'm not saying you or everyone else is wrong, but my tests really show no signs of delay yet~ (0_o)
but if you say so... *mew

The most important thing in a contest is the spirit, and the will to overcome the odds, and I'm really pleased that this discussion turned on to an occasion to learn lot about the game and how it intimately works.
Plus, as I mentioned, crafting each own skills is even learning how much you can push the thermo and what you might have to cut to make things effective.
So...really cool :)

Kinda hard to make music sync to the level, i bet the song needs to be very slow and relaxing to make that happen. Becuse it dont work for fast regular of fast. I already tried.

BTW i can make only stuff blink and all that to the music. If you dont mind with it, becuse its pretty hard.

Ok... well look at my edit...

I did. Helps if you read my reply, though. ;)

Maybe if I explain in a different way... imagine there are two of those vertical lines on the Music Sequencer which move towards the right: line #1 only triggers instrument parts, and line #2 (which is the one you can see) triggers everything else (like tags). When you put a lot of load on the game, say by emitting a lot of complex objects, line #2 slows down, but line #1 doesn't.

The net result is that all instrument parts will synchronize with each other, and all tags will synchronize with each other, but the music won't necessarily synchronize with the tags.

Don't worry, I did read your post`
i also understand what you mean and are trying to tell me... mostly.

But again. It's hard for me to judge as i've not been experiencing the lag or whatever that is yet.
may mean once my level gets more detailed i will... i can't say.
So what did the Mono level guy do anyways? his seemed to work fine~

Presumably he just kept the level simple enough to avoid any noticable synchronization problems.
