So i finally finished my first level. And i'm not gonna say something like: 'pls don't be too harsh because it's only my first level' because I'm just really proud of it.

It's called Solidplace
By me! (PSN: Mr_Spoonylegs)

I worked on this level for over a month >_<
The level contains platforming and puzzling, and more things... just figure out yourself.
I can't really say what kinda theme it is so just take a look at the pictures:

I don't have a discription of the level yet so if anyone could make one that would be great. (I can't make this kinda things up myself)
If you're interested pls play it.

Cheers

Ok, this is pretty weird... Not the level but I had no idea, for the past 2-3 times I basically played your level, I had no IDEA it was you LMAO.

But yeah, this level is really fun everyone, I recommend it. I only played it twice, and it wasn't finished, but it has a great feel to it, and yeah.

And Yarbone, maybe you can have the same level copied twice, but in the other one, have it be a timed level. Timed levels = More replayability. Actually, might as well make this one timed, if you don't want a second one. Whatever it's really your choice.

Hey that's actually a really good idea. Considering it's a lot of platforming :)
It has a good replay value already I think.
You should play it again a added some cool stuff:cool:

And now you know I'M Mr_Spoonylegs :p

Come on guys I need some feedback :)

No I don't and since I'm free tomorrow I promise to check your level out, and a couple of others, I don't feel like I've been doing my part in this community, but Winter Break has started so I'll get started as well... Tomorrow... It's 3:00 AM here. :p

Hey Yarbone. I wanted to let you know I will be checking out your level now and I will be back soon with my usual wall of feedback

*EDIT*

Just finished it, here are my thoughts:

Pros:

- Really good level structure that makes full use of of the different layers, well done.

- There are a couple of cool platforming elements I don't recall seeing elsewhere. The part where you drop down and have to swing from the small pieces of spong on the wall over the electrified floor in particular was cool.

- Materials all work well.

- Clever use of sponge blocks and magnetic switches to solve puzzles

- Challenging (also a con)

- Length was good in relation to the gameplay

Cons/Suggestions:

- Challenging, VERY challenging! I listed this as a pro because I love a good challenge but this level for the average person is far from accessible. There really isn't much else to say here. If you made this level for the hardcore then the hardcore will appreciate it

- Add a couple more checkpoints and make them double-life. To borrow a phrase from my friend Hexagohn: "don't punish the player!". Chances are that if a player is forced to restart they will not play again and will probably give your level a low rating out of frustration.

- Those yellow arrow stickers really bother me lol. They don't need to be there and they really don't look good.

- I don't really like the look of basic would throughout the whole level, I find it too plain. You can do a million things here from changing it into another wood/material or coloring it with stickers. Needless to say if you personally love that look then by all means keep it.

This was a really great effort for your first level. The focus here is on platforming and although there is no story I know that wasn't your goal here. If you have a chance to check out my new level it would be great to know your thoughts. I look forward ot the next one, keep up the good work

Hey thanks for the review.
As you said it's very challenging. It was kind of my intention... but i didn't want it to be too hard. I don't know...

And the basic look was kinda my intention too... but you're right a could've ad some more variation with materials. As you may have seen i tried that at the "red" parts.

I've seen your score: it seems you haven't found every single secret yet... you should try to find them :)

That's probably the reason why it's rated with 3 stars. You're the first person who actually finishes the whole level >_<

Hey thanks for the review.

Your welcome although I should point out I am not really doing "reviews". I am simply leaving people feedback (which is so important for all us creators) in the hopes that it can help improve the level. A review is usually just a commentary of what is to be found in the level and criticism about what is wrong with it without actually offerning any solutions. A review also gives a score at the end such as 8/10 ect but I don't do that because I am not reviewing lol.

Back on topic, we can add the secret areas as another pro. And yes the fact that I am the only person to finish the level is further indication of it's difficulty :)

I just wanted to say that i made some improvements.

-It's somewhat less harder now.
-Some minor changes
-Another secret

Upcoming
- A 2X player spot! :hero:

And I'm now participating in the F4F system. I think I'm doing 5 F4F's...

I played your level! Yes! Yay!

1) The blocks were too hard to push up the steep ramps. It was a pain to move them around-- especially the second giant block you have to push over the edge to reach another platform.

2) I didn't like the cheap wood look of the level. A simple material change would be great.

3) There was slowdown for me later in the level when jumping across the electric hazards. When I collected a score bubble, the level slowed down making me completely miss the next leap. It was frustrating. D:<

4) I thought the puzzle where you one block to reach the big block, then push over that block to reach another platform, and then climb across the easy-to-miss sponge material to reach the green light block was ingenious. I loved it. It made me a happy boy.

5) I enjoyed how the level had a warm feeling to it via your lighting. Great job on that.

6) More double-life checkpoints, please.

7) "There are a couple of cool platforming elements I don't recall seeing elsewhere. The part where you drop down and have to swing from the small pieces of spong on the wall over the electrified floor in particular was cool."

This. I didn't think I'd make it, but it worked! :)

Overall, I liked your level. It's not perfect, but it's an admirable first effort. :D

I actually was aware of that... But it's easy when you grab them at the corner, maybe i'll mak it a bit easier.

2) I didn't like the cheap wood look of the level. A simple material change would be great.

I thought it looks great :(

3) There was slowdown for me later in the level when jumping across the electric hazards. When I collected a score bubble, the level slowed down making me completely miss the next leap. It was frustrating. D:<

Yes i shouldn't have placed bubbles on places where you have to concentrate, because when you grab any bubble, it just slows down.

4) I thought the puzzle where you one block to reach the big block, then push over that block to reach another platform, and then climb across the easy-to-miss sponge material to reach the green light block was ingenious. I loved it. It made me a happy boy.

Thanks, i tried not to overdo it :)

6) More double-life checkpoints, please.

You're totally right, but it's kinda hard for me to say whether it's too hard or not because I made it myself it's actually easy to play for me :/

7) "There are a couple of cool platforming elements I don't recall seeing elsewhere. The part where you drop down and have to swing from the small pieces of spong on the wall over the electrified floor in particular was cool."

That's not yours :p

My favorite community level. I've played this one to death. Still cannot ace it, though I think I've worked out a fool proof way of doing the graby/electric fall.

Pros

Love the look of the level, including the basic wood. Just because its the default doesn't mean you can't use it.

Not too much running each section just flows onto the next. Must have taken a lot of planning.

Secrets and lot of scope to improve your score.

Cons

There a two sections that experience slowdown. The first is after you the spike block and the second after the first electric pit in the electric/wood section (bad description). Not sure what causes it and its easy to compensate for if you know its coming.

Problem with secret area.
When you need to drag the red block of off the lift. I just can't do this. Have tried pulling, pushing and grab a different stages and the block allways gets stuck and crushes.

Is there any way you can make that easier. please

Pros

- Simple level, no storyline to keep track of, works well

- Puzzles are all smart and require a bit of thinking

- Nothing is overused

- Did you know that yellow matches yellow?

Cons/Suggestions

- The grabbable boxes are hard to pull up slopes. Maybe lessen the slope of the hills?

- The large boxes are just hard to pull. But that's not as big of a deal, really.

I've been meaning to play this level for a while now, honestly. 5 stars and a heart for you.

Yes I'm aware of that, i'll fix that soon... It's just when you grab bubbles at certain place: Everything just slows down, and you don't want to have that while you're in a jump :(

You mean the place where you have to drag the sponge into the lift to get to the secret (you don't have to get the sponge back you know)

As for BassDeluxe...

Pros

- Simple level, no storyline to keep track of, works well

- Nothing is overused

- Did you know that yellow matches yellow?

I'm really bad at making storylines, and i like to keep it simple but also good looking.

- The large boxes are just hard to pull. But that's not as big of a deal, really.

I've been meaning to play this level for a while now, honestly. 5 stars and a heart for you.

About the slopes: Yes somebody else mentioned that before they're kinda hard to get the sponges on top of the slope:(
I'll do that later :)

About the large box: I know that, escpecially the second "large box" is hard to get from the platform. I think i can remove the inner green block and past a thin layer in front of it.

Well I really loved this level Yarbone. Incredibly well done platforming :) A really nice change of pace! I'm not going to add much to whats been said because I really didn't find any glaring faults with your level. The only thing I'd recommend is on the last big box, just make the platform it's sitting on lower. Had a heck of a time trying to get ontop of the platform behind it so I could push it instead of trying to pull it to no avail. Don't worry about F4F btw, since the feedback is pretty lacking on my end :) 5/5 and a heart

Wow, dudeeee... I played your level yesterday (I think... It might of been the day before) and I loved every second of it :)

I loved the use of lighting in the level, and the platforming elements were great. The whole "make green match green" thing was very well implemented; I liked the idea of solving a puzzle to get to the next room.

Honestly mate, I can't think of any suggestions. The level was delightful to play - and easy on the eye - so well done! ;)

5 stars and hearted. By the way, I added you on PSN ^_^

Hey thanks for the compliment! I worked hard on this level, so it's good to hear some positive things

By the way, I accepted you on PSN ^_^

EDIT:
I republished my level with the following:

-Fixed some issues with the "slow-down-when-grabbubbles" proplem
-some more small things...
-But best of all: I added a 2X player section!

I've put a lot of time in this section, because it's really complicated.
I updated the first post with a picture of the 2X player section.
And i actually haven't been able to test it properly with 2 players, so if anyone could do that >_<

Hi Yarbonne,

I finally could play your spotlighted level and the first thing that i will write is that: it really deserves it!
Here are some of my thoughts:

PRO :

- Level design: Your level is probably THE BETTER I PLAYED from this point of view. It is clearly visible that there is an amazing quantity of work behind this. Your Puzzles are well done, clever and very coinsistent with the level.
- Gameplays elements: There is a ton of its! There is a lot of very good idea in your level and it is a good exemple of how a level could be fun to play.
- The level is of good lenght and challenging enough to be interesting. I died at my first play at 85% of the level. But i don't hesitate a second to press "replay" in order to finhish it. The difficulty is well determined.

SUGGESTIONS :
- I found that at some place the background was very simple and could be more detailed. Don't get me wrong: the level is beautiful but some sections could be a little more polished. However considering the puzzles, the various gameplay elements and the lenght of the level, i think your thermometer must be near 100% and that it is the reason.
- There is no reel storyline in your level. I think you could add a little touch of scenario. For exemple, i find that the "green/green" text of the start was coming from nowhere, and it is something i don't liked too much.

Overall, you made a fantastic level Yarbone (btw, i was searching Yarbone in the search of LBP....never find you....then i opened a little more my eyes and see that your PSN was Mr_spoonylegs...lol)!!
I loved it so much that i gave him 5 stars, a deserve hearts and a "Brillant" tag.

Yeah Actually it's a meant to be solid and clean looking... :/

But you're not right about the thermometer... LOL It's at about 1/3.
That's mostly because I only used flat shapes, and everything is straight... If i had much round things than it would've taken a lot more from my thermometer. Although some puzzle things are very complicated.

- There is no reel storyline in your level. I think you could add a little touch of scenario. For exemple, i find that the "green/green" text of the start was coming from nowhere, and it is something i don't liked too much.

I'm not good at storylines :(
And the "green/green" thing at the beginning was one thing you should keep in mind when you want to solve the puzzles.

Yeah, I have a suggestion :) You could make the pistons move slower so you have more time to jump (tweak menu, there's a timer shape in there... change it to about 5.0 or something). OR you could place the second platform with the piston lower - so it's easier to time it.

Hope I helped.

Yeah i've thought of the second option too, but i want it too be even so everything is lined up, if you know what i mean.

And thing with timer thing... do you mean the "speed" of the piston when it gets activate? Any it's a good idea actually :)

Did you notice how long it takes to pull that level? You have to pull it with a lot of power... So what I'm trying to say is that the time of pulling the lever should be shorter.
Let's say the the jump is 2.0 seconds long. The lever takes about 1.5 to fully pull over. THAT's the problem
But I just got this amazing idea:
Just shrink the size of the lever, and you're done! Because when it's smaller it takes way less power to pull it = shorter time :D

(do you even understand >_> )

This level was fantastic. The block puzzles were great, and the whole structure of everything and the unique ways you platform were extremely fun and well implemented. I really like the look of everything too, and the camera work. Nothing really matches, but everything compliments everything else well somehow. All the little optional secret things you have in here is immense...

I like the whole lack of overbearing purpose and plot, and characters - it's just raw platforming and it's extremely well done. It almost felt like a mini-H.A.T.E. what with the variety and originality of each segment, the solidity of the architecture, and the very precise functions of all the mechanics. One of my favorite levels so far...

There was a couple times where pushing the block was more cumbersome and difficult than need be, but that's only because of the physics involved... I can't think of a solution to it, so it's nothing I can fault. I wish it were longer, because it was so enjoyable. Great work.

I appreciate it. The only thing i can do about the blocks is to make them less steap, but i think that will be very hard to do. One thing you can do, though, is to grab the sponges at the corner and than use X to make it go faster.

And i was already thinking about making it longer but i don't know sure, because people seem to find my level hard :/

It's challenging, but more in a pensive and methodical way. I can't see the typical run-happy player having any luck, and I played it earlier with two morons and the lag didn't help - they sucked, but it let me open the 2x area, which was good.

The only part that I think would justifiably dumbfound some people is the part with the glass-topped moving pedestal - I was down to my last life when I passed that, and I think it probably just makes people go "wha?" instead of thinking.

There's nothing that needs to be changed, and I implore you to make it longer if you can - as long as it's what you want for it, and can keep everything copasetic and cohesive since you're so far removed from the original creative process.

I'm shocked at the playcount... it should be much higher. Get on that republish wagon, man!

I wanted it to be challenging, but not in a way that people don't want to restart, if you know what i mean... And the playcount is indeed not very high.

Some people just don't see that there's glass on top, wich makes them die the first 2-3 times.

by the way, did you finish the 2X player area?

NinjaMicWZ
01-10-2009, 06:49 AM
I know exactly what you mean... it was difficult only if I messed up, versus difficulty due to random nonsense or impossible jumps (which I've been known to include in levels lol)... you got it just right.

We did finish the 2x section - I ended up having to be the one to do the jump and it was pure luck because of how bad we were lagging, and because I couldn't explain to them what it was we needed to do to coordinate it (a mic would be best, if the latency wasn't bad to say "1, 2, 3, go!" ya know?). It's easily the most well thought out, complex, and tastefully placed 2x section I've seen on a user level. I really liked how it was a totally secret room, but felt in line with everything else.

We couldn't finish the level though... lag got the best of us.

Yeah, you'd think they'd encourage more complex design with a little more stability in the frame rate. Have you ever gotten the message when you save your level in edit, where it tells you "this area of your level is too complex, try using less moving parts etc etc"? I always got that message when I saved Time is of the Essence, and it's nearly impossible to play with more than 2 people.

Hey man, really good level. Pretty sure this is my favorite straight up platformer level of all the community levels Ive tried.

Pros:
-look and feel, the plain wood look works really well with how you designed the level. You made a level that uses with the basic game play (jumping and grabbing) to their fullest so it works to use the basic building materials to their fullest.
-Difficulty, some of the earlier post were saying its too difficult but I'm far from tops at timing my jumps and there was only 1 place where I racked up the death count (shifting glass got me many times until I figured it out) most of the deaths were 1 or 2 deaths max.

Cons:
You put the most ambiguous puzzle right at the begining. When I see I a lever I pull a lever, so Im sitting in the 3rd room (with the 2 yellow LED cubes and 1 big cube) and I get my bonus points then wonder where to go since the proper exit is now blocked.

My suggestion-> make the platform that lowers down to connect the bonus part out of dissolve material and have the sensor that opens the bonus points also dissolve that platform.

-When I finally got the yellow cube to the right spot I was trying to figure out how to get it to move up to the matching spot and didnt see the platform extend, maybe add a cut scene for noobs like me.

Other suggestions: Maybe make a new first room with a stupid easy example of how your matching colors work. Example nothing in the room but a cube with an LED/key, the matching led on the wall with an arrow and closed door, make the room small enough so sacks really have nothing else to do but drag the block to the right place.

Didn't have any friends online to try the X2 part but I'll prolly drag one of them their next time around.

Hope the feedback helps some, but your level is fun just as is,

Yeah, you'd think they'd encourage more complex design with a little more stability in the frame rate. Have you ever gotten the message when you save your level in edit, where it tells you "this area of your level is too complex, try using less moving parts etc etc"? I always got that message when I saved Time is of the Essence, and it's nearly impossible to play with more than 2 people.

No i've never had that before... I did have the message with the "too complex shape" thing.
I think I'm near the problem you mentioned;)

Tell me about it -_- and with creative slapping you.... and me dragging you into spike pits.... and your big ears in the way.... and blues hmmmm.... ugly sackperson lol

haha lol, :')
we should do that again.

At first i want to know: Do you really think those LED's look like they're yellow? I seriously think they're green XD

My suggestion-> make the platform that lowers down to connect the bonus part out of dissolve material and have the sensor that opens the bonus points also dissolve that platform.

I won't make it out of dissolve material, because i think it wouldn't fit in the level. But I can make it raise it again after you activated the secret room thingy.

-When I finally got the yellow cube to the right spot I was trying to figure out how to get it to move up to the matching spot and didnt see the platform extend, maybe add a cut scene for noobs like me.

Yeah, I already added a different camera angle there, but it's a really small thing that changes so it's kinda hard to see.

Other suggestions: Maybe make a new first room with a stupid easy example of how your matching colors work. Example nothing in the room but a cube with an LED/key, the matching led on the wall with an arrow and closed door, make the room small enough so sacks really have nothing else to do but drag the block to the right place.

I have to say that that's a really good idea, but unfortunately i really haven't got enough space for that :/ Unless you have another idea...

Didn't have any friends online to try the X2 part but I'll prolly drag one of them their next time around.

Yeah you should try it out, I think that part came out really well ^_^

Hope the feedback helps some, but your level is fun just as is,

Wow, I really love this level. The game play was really satisfying and I never encountered a single problem. I think I gave it 5 stars, it was either 4 or 5. Also hearted it. I really liked your x2 puzzle. Simple but incredibly satisfying. The look was simple but I liked it a lot. And the amount of variety is awesome.

These aren't really problems just things I might do differently.
I think your right that it does have replayability as is but I agree with Whaaale that if it was timed I would be addicted to trying for first place. Or atleast certain parts of it. I would also make it so the squares you drag around to open the door in the beginning of the level came back if they broke. Thats about it. Awesome level!

Just played it through and welll ... here are my thought :P

I love puzzles and because of that ^^" ... kudos for ya!

Some jumps were just a bit difficult that novice platformers wont be able to do it ... I think.

Prize Bubbles should be unglued - as they are the one making the lag. Use smallified dark matter to make them float or stay in one place if you want them to.

On the 1st puzzle ... if the 2 small sponges gets destroyed by the electrified punching wall thingy below ... the sackboy gets stucked >,<".

Overall:
Loved the level and the challenge! ... ohh and the puzzles ^^"
Just fix the lag issue with the bubbles and it would be lag-free?

I didn't run into any lag... Well, I did when I was playing online

WOW thanks for that... i never knew why i got the lag when i grabbed bubbles. I'll fix that soon :)

That's actually the main reason why i put 2 sponges there.

Does anyone know how to make a box emitting machine that only emits a box when it's destroyed?

Hmm this could help ya solve your problem ... ^^"

Put a magnetic key on the box.
Capture it of course :P
Put a magnetic switch (with the same color as the key) - with a range that scopes that area where the box are ... here would be the second floor and the first floor (the one with electrified wall punching thingy).
Put the magnetic switch to inverted. Set to On/Off. and connect the wiring to the emitter which emits the box with the magnetic key.

^^"

well i was thinking about makin another plain looking level, same kinda style...

If i would like too, i could double the length of my level, considering my thermometer is only 50% filled.

Creative
01-21-2009, 02:09 PM
Only 50%? Oh, cool. You should definitely add some more rooms then. I only suggested making a sequel because I thought your thermometer was nearly full... :p

It shows you that how full your thermometer is doesn't relate to how good the level is ;)

Yeah, man... definitely make it bigger. The only thing I can say though is make sure you get into the same mindstate as when you first made it, so that whatever you add really meshes with the rest seamlessly and doesn't clash with or overshadow the rest too much. You definitely have room to make 3 or 4 more small rooms, or a couple rooms that are just extremely intricate and cool.

If you find that your style is too different now, or you can't help but do things differently with the new techniques and methods you've learned then don't... and just move onto a sequel where it would be more fitting.

Hey, just finished playing your level and thought it was great. Especially for your first level. Nice work!

Pros

-Some have mentioned the normal wood and simple design being a con, but I personally think it fits great with the level and the gameplay.

-All the secret areas are hidden in neat ways.

-Puzzles, puzzles and more puzzles. Only had problems with the first one and getting locked in as some others have mentioned... but I figured it out after that what I had done.

-2x Area, very nice challenge I hadnt seen before... we didnt get by it when I played but I'll go back to try again... thought we had managed to get the trick down but just kept falling short on the jump by a little bit.

Cons

-May want to find a way to make that first puzzle a little more clear as to whats going on and a way to make it where you're able to pull that switch to make it go back up so you dont get stuck or something along that lines.

-Some of the switches had sounds attached to them I think and a couple didn't. Not sure maybe my hearings going... not really a con but it would be cool to make them all make a sound like the task complete when you pull them.

-Did lack a story... not a con to everyone, this level really doesn't need one though I suppose.

-Replay - Though the secret areas to find are probably good enough to make people want to strive for the top score, a race would just make it that much better. Seems like a great level layout for a race.

All in all it was a great level and I recommend all to play.... it is a little challenging for the new gamer but most of it is easy to catch on to. I hearted the level and you 5/5 stars. Don't worry about the F4F, I noticed this level a while back and finally got around to playing it and glad I did. If you do feel the urge though you can give curiosity killed the sack a try.

Yeah... you're right, I actually was still experimenting in that part because I just started creating in LBP, although i tried to improve it. Somebody else mentioned this before... I'm thinking about letting the platform to raise automaticly after you triggered the secret.

-Some of the switches had sounds attached to them I think and a couple didn't. Not sure maybe my hearings going... not really a con but it would be cool to make them all make a sound like the task complete when you pull them.

That's mainly because i didn't really know about sounds 'n switches 'n stuff >__< You can definatily see the difference between the beginning and the end, because in the beginning i was still unexperienced. I've already thought of kinda rebuilding the beginning actually... at least improving it.

-Did lack a story... not a con to everyone, this level really doesn't need one though I suppose.

I really don't know what kinda story would fit in... I mean it's not a theme, so you could say "hey that's a space kinda theme". It's really supposed to be straight up platforming. I really don't know what story could fit in here >_<

-Replay - Though the secret areas to find are probably good enough to make people want to strive for the top score, a race would just make it that much better. Seems like a great level layout for a race.
Yeah maybe a certain part of the level... but certainly not the whole level.
It's a good idea though. Actually whaaaaale mentioned this before, but you're right :)

I've played this level alot of times now :P I just can't get enough of it, for me your biggest advantage, is the fact you re-use certain parts.

i mean, you can already see you have to go up, but the stairs is still incomplete, so you pull a switch and that 1 step shows itself, and you can pass :D

Btw, i think i got all the secrets now, i'm still not sure :S And i aced it after lots of tries :D

EDIT: Now that i see you're expanding it, i'm sooo excited! :D This is my favourite user-made level of the entire LBP levels, seriously. Don't let me down!

I don't know how this slipped under my radar, but I finally got around to playing it and I love it. The visual style is great! I was really digging it. Might I suggest trying something new? Starting with something new (theme, gameplay style, even just a blank canvas) could be what you need you get your ideas rolling again. Why force updates on something that doesn't really need them? If it's not coming naturally I'd take that as a sign.

The level is great, as everyone has pointed out and if you stop devving it now, you've stil got a level to be proud of.

This reminds me, I haven't played your levels yet Yarbone. Sorry about that, onto the PS3!

Edit: Ok played the SE version but I'll post it here instead of bumping the other thread as well, WOW! I LOVE these types of levels (this sort of reminds me of Insomnia-FM's Obstacle Course series.) Some amazingly polished visuals, I was trying really hard to see if there was anything at all messed up with it or out of place and couldn't :p . A really great mix of awesome platforming and puzzles! I think it could use some extra lives on some of the checkpoints or maybe some extra checkpoints here and there but I wouldn't stress it. :star::star::star::star::star: . Now onto Canyon Jazz!
