The story focuses on a sackboy that suddenly wakes up after the world has ended and after years of searching for anyone who is still alive, he finds a strange building that seems to have working electricity.

I'm up to episode 11 and each episode has a very distinct color pallette and some pretty challenging platforming. The challenge really depends on how familiar you are with LBP, I can wizz right through the levels now because I got better at the jumping mechanic.

For me, the story/art/gameplay all have to be interesting for people to enjoy a level.

If you don't like megaman-style platforming that is somewhat unforgiving but very addicting.. you should steer clear of these levels! These are not "ride a car for 2 seconds then get 6 trophies" levels.

The story gets more warped as you continue, it's unlike anything else on LBP, so please check it out, I don't care about hearts, I just want people to see
my stuff.:)

As soon as I heard plot based I was happy. So few levels have any plot at all its disappointing. I really look forward to trying your levels. 11 episodes? That's just awesome.
Edit»» I just realized you live in the same state as me. :D

Series Updated:

I've added a new level, level 12. It's a vehicle/paintinator based level and it's pretty intense.

I didn't mention before but I NEVER use anything pre-made. Everything I make is original. All of this level (including the CUSTOM CRUSIER!!!) was made by me.

I'm getting really frustrated not recieving feedback :-/ I worked my *** off on these levels, would it kill some people to take a look at any of the 12? I'm really trying to make my own game, not an LBP series, the series isn't even supposed to feel like LBP. I wish I could just get some feedback to know if I'm doing things right...

Thanks

I just finished episode 1 and I'm about to try and blow through all of these. So far, man... all I can say is that this is a next level event if it stays as good or gets better. I'll be back to edit this post with more thoughts...

edit 1: Ok... episode 1 is amazing. The narrative is sophisticated and compelling, and the visuals are just jawdropping. So surreal and ominous...

2... eh, I like the surreal of it, and the dialogue but it seems so plain compared to episode 1. I also think you should hide your dark matter by only using it as thing support behind blocks of rubber. I really like the platforming here, and the use of depth perception and multiple planes. The repetitiveness of objects seems a little mundane, but it almost looks like a salvador dali nightmare. The dead end corner in the left is definitely the most visually stimulating part of the level.

3... I like the look of circuitry, but the oblong shapes don't seem to fit well with the idea of what I think is some kind of AI - I understand that you are trying to keep the visual theme and style consistent as it evolves, while each act offers a totally new visual style, more color and a unique type of platforming challenge. The environment is difficult to see due to some camera work and foreground clutter - part of the look, I know, but still a bit cumbersome IMO. The shape, color and size of the sponges don't seem to fit with the look either. The best part is shooting up the arrow through the circuitry and currents as the series of notes plays. Staying on and going up and down plays a nice little ditty heh

4... wow, more color. Anyway, it keeps getting more visually stimulating as it goes on, and it's yet another entirely different type of gameplay. I had to stop here just because my TV's been having problems with intense concentrations of lighting effects and vibrant reds/oranges/yellows. It creates a weird corona of distortion - I guess 'cause it's an SD TV and is pretty beat up. The story is shaping up to be very intriguing and fleshed out.

I'll try and get through the rest of these when I can... great work. So far it's the most developed and well written story I've seen in LBP. This is only feedback, not necessarily a critique.

Thanks to anyone who has tried it out so far, the story is pretty crazy if you invest the man-hours. I also wish people would check out episode 12, it's my first vehicle level and the controls on the vehicle I made are really slick... any feedback would be great.

Thanks!

Hey SnowSpot, how did you do the color and lighting for the first level?
Thanks!

A combination of lights, color correction, brightness.... it's not incredibly hard to do but there's a lot of tweaking involved if you want to get the right look. Changing the brightness on lights is really key and increasing/decreasing radius of lights.

I guess I'm embarrassed it's not really complicated ... you could do it too! Just experiment. I do online cartoons (http://jmartin97.newgrounds.com) and I get a lot of ideas from that and I try to reproduced them in LBP, I can sit in the game for hours trying to find something that looks cool :P

EDIT: I'll add your PSN and check out your level

That's cool that it's a medium for you... I do the same thing by channeling my verse or poetry into some of my levels. I'm not much for in depth storytelling, but rhyme and reason is easier than breathing.

Just "playing" in create mode is half the fun... I'd say that in the grand scheme of things, playing through story mode and levels is really just like learning to do a basic part of the gameplay - but getting in create mode and playing around is like playing with legos or erector sets, doodling, and performing lab expiriments for the kid in all of us. Sometimes your really putting something together, sometimes you're just smacking around floaties. That's the real game.

ometimes your really putting something together, sometimes you're just smacking around floaties. That's the real game.

It's true, MM really created something amazing, it's like a program, a game, and a social community all wrapped into a (mostly) zero-lag enviornment. IT's pretty stunning IMO, especially the fact you can "undo" back to the beginning of your level in most cases.

I really look forward to MM adding some sort of animation/cutscene functions, lets us record our own voices, and expand into true 3D. Don't get me wrong, 2.5 D is great but this system could so easily transition into true 3d.

This game is way ahead of it's time and just.. incredible.

Screw the wii, Sony should be in first with a title like this

Hey man. I wanted to let you know that I have begun playing these levels and have completed the first 3. I will refrain from giving a full assessment until I have completed them all but what I can tell you right now that as a writer/poet I appreciate those creators who try to create something special using narrative and this series clearly does that. Right now the first level is a real standout. The visulas are brilliant and really set the stage for the whole series. I will be back with a ton of feedback once I have had a chance to play throught them all. If you get a chance to check out my levels then I would love to have your thoughts. I think you will be able to appreciate my focus on story, especially with the Legion :)

SERIES UPDATE:

Episode 13 Published.

Of all the levels I've done, this one is currently my favorite. Tons of new and unique stuff and the imagery is beyond surreal. I played a lot with depth effects and I think anyone who plays will appreciate the experience.

Any comments are greatly appreciated. Please check it out guys!

I'm taking a look at each level and will make a new edit everytime I review a new Episode. I'll start with Ep. 1

---
EP1 - An awesome prologue to what I hope will be an awesome story with some nice little platforming in there. The falling blocks and the darkness was awesome. Pretty nice camera angles and lighting.

EP2 - An interesting second part to the series. Loved the dialogue between the "people" talking to the SackBoy, which one minor change. In my view the "btw" written in one set of dialogue is unnecessary and makes the dialogue look sloppy. I recommend writing the dialogue in normal English. Platforming was very challenging and fun.

EP3 - Very well done with all the GREAT level design, the electicity everywhere was absolutely amazing! The grabbing on and hoping for dear life WAS TOTALLY AWESOME. It made me actually WANT to play the rest of the levels in the series.

more to come...

Playing all the levels, I'll write my feedback one by one. So make sure to check mine out every once in a while.
------------------
Episode 1 : I really love the beginning of what I hope is an awesome story. I really love your writing style, the text gave the level that sort of hopeless, dark, cold, feeling to the level. But it had one strand of light left. And that strand was you Sackboy. I'm going to play Episode 2 now, and I'll write up on it as well. One suggestion though, in some parts the text doesn't really need a cutscene, especially for those three worded ones. The person will still read it, he just wont be bothered by it. Not saying I was at all, I love levels with a good story, the majority of LBP unfortunately, probably doesn't feel the same.
------------------
Episode 2 : Holy crap was that the hardest level I have ever played or what? I really like the dark and eerey and "we're watching you" Sort of feel. But it's too difficult for the average player. Add extra checkpoints, and make some of those springy bolts, not springy. Oh and the text that says " Not literally of course" When they say they want to pick your brain, it's not invisible. Anyways off to Episode 3!
------------------
Episode 3 : Another level like that, you keep making me want more. So off to the next level, you really might want to make the sound effect things and magic mouths invisible. Episode 4 here I come!
------------------
Episode 4 : And...Cut! This is where I stopped, you have shown me a lot of amazing lighting effects bravo. But my eyes can't handle too much of it. I might have a seizure, especially after that one "I'm A builder, here let me show you!" That part was lovely to the eyes... Anyways... I cheated the level and dropped down from the spinning polygons and landed right on the scoreboard, but before I did that I flew straight down into the spikes, catching the community level key in my path. I guess I'm just lucky... :p

Holy mother of all things tasty! You've been doing some serious work! With all of the effort you put in, you deserve to get your levels seen, and some feedback. I'll try to review some. Man, it'll take a whole review team for these. XD

Do you plan on making this a full 20 levels? Are you going to make another PSN account for more levels?

We should get a Review Team for the series, as well as a Beta Team for the upcoming episodes in the series!

I'll join both (assuming that the creator -- JonMartin lets us -- if not then whatever)!!!

Thanks to everyone checking the levels out, a ton of work goes into each one.. I know the first few are challenging but as you play things get more fun and the gameplay gets more fair and polished. I plan to make around 18 levels with the 18th level being the ending (only 1 ending no good/bad stuff).

I got some really cool things planned for the ending, I hope people are interested enough that they stick with the series. :D

EDIT: Whaaaaaale... I'm sorry about your eyes but I'm afraid it will only get worse as you play... muHAHAHA

This is my F4F to feedback you left me, just so you know you don't owe anything:

I liked the visual style. Even though it's been done before, you still knew how to use it, and you did it well. I think some parts need polish and decoration (it was a bit bland in some levels) and I had trouble with some of the platforming (particularly the 2nd level with the black rubber; I couldn't see where to land!), but you've still got a really good story. Keep going with it.

I appreciate the response but could you go a little more in-depth? What episodes did you play? What parts needed polish or decoration? What levels were bland? I hate to sound nit-picky but it seemed like my post was much more in-depth.

I really don't know what else to say! I'm not exactly about to play 13 levels and give detailed feedback for each. To be fair, I played the first two levels. You had some good visual touches that stood out (particularly the house silhouette and the creepy flaming wall covered in eyes), but because of that I expected cool little touches like that throughout. There were one or two parts (such as the beginning of the first level when sackboy is in the pit) where I didn't really understand what purpose it had, or how it got there. I really don't have much else to say about it, really.

I'm going to try your levels out. I know I only need two to qualify for F4F but I'm going to try for the whole thing. I've finished the first three and that's all for tonight though. My thoughts:

Episode 1: The best of the three I've done story-wise, methinks. I didn't enjoy the controller shaking, but that's not really something you can fix. Platforming seems to be absent, though.

Episode 2: Platforming definitely isn't absent here. The story is still good, though I'd recomend spelling out btw. On that bit with the rolling circle, I think you should have it respawn if you happen to die.

Episode 3: I managed to skip a section of this one, by accident. After riding the whatever up to the short circuit. I fell off the platfrom you landed on and seemed to skip some of the level. The part I was at was where something was saying "Please don't do this."

Episode 4: At the spinny part near the beginning, I went up and to the left and then fell through to the circle thing next to the one you're supposed to be in. I had to drop down and retry it.

I couldn't finish. What was I supposed to do after he says "This place used to be beautiful?"

Episode 5: That C- shaped thing is really hard to get out of. >.> I still love your art style, but not much else for me to say about this one.

Episode 6: The spinning wheel is quite annoying. There's no skill involved, you just have to get lucky. But other than that I think this is my favorite yet. Probably the most artistic of the first 6.

Episode 7: Quite frustrating at the arrow part. I'm going to come back to this when I've cooled down a bit.

Episode 8: That flashlight thing doesn't help you see the beginning of the gap at all. The second flashlight thing was stuck for me. And that rover? It helps you out absolutely none because it's already at the end of the dark area. You did instill a bit of fear in me during that part though, I found myself rushing through.

Episode 9: I really like your use of weight and pillars in this level. The platforming was good. I also like the music on the slide. Great stuff.

Episode 10: Pretty short, but what you did have frustrated the hell out of me. Luckily, the worst parts were at the beginning. Kind of lacking in story as well.

Episode 11: Frustrating as can be, especially the beginning and the invisible path bits.

Episode 12: The third speech bubble is all dots. Also, you may want to remove the swearing, I'd hate to see the level be moderated. The vehicle parts were amazing. However, you really ought to make them respawn if the player comes back.

Episode 13: I love how that eye seems to follow you. And the face at the end was priceless. As far as platforming goes, I have mixed feelings. The arrows were frustrating, but the floaty blocks were usually great.

I'll add in thoughts on more of them tomorrow.

OK, I've played through most of these - a few of them with the Author.

Here is my assessment:

HOLY SHNIKIES! I absolutely love these levels. I think everyone who ownes LittleBigPlanet should be tied down, given a long island iced tea, and forced to play through this entire series in the dark.

The visual style is stunning. It is almost completely abstract. Great humor, great writing, but a number of moments that might actually give you goose bumps.

This is the first set of levels in LBP that you don't really play, you experience it. Kind of like watching really good David Lynch movies.

They may not be everyones cup of tea, but they blew me away. Went in with a few online people and played episodes 12 and 13 and I don't think I laughed so hard in my life. (it wasn't really 4 person friendly, but that just seemed to make it better).

Anyway, Kudos and great job, JonMartin. I will be continuing to follow this series.

5 stars and hearted each level so far!

Also, after you are finished playing these go bring yourself back to earth with a quick 4 player shot of "Splat Invaders" (personal plug.... I actually suggest playing these games at the end of my game I liked them so much)

Wow thanks for the review, I think I'll go review splat invaders now :P

I was afraid this thread got lost in the mix. If anyone wants to review a few of the levels or even just one, I will review one of yours. Cheers!

Yup, he let me jump in and play his new level 14 (unfinished) a little bit ago. Another winner! He has a knack for building a level where I am always thinking "how in the world do I get past THAT?" but yet I always manage miraculously to get to the next part. Very cool!

That locked one is the new one, I had my save file corrupt a while back, now I always make sure I upload a level I'm working on periodically, I recommend it to everyone, it's like an online harddrive.

EDIT: Episode 14 was just published, I've uploaded some screens.

Oh.my.god.

these levels are amazing.

the storytelling is brilliant. If they ever released a patch that let you replace the text with voice, I would do anything to voice some of the great abstract story.

Just finished playing through some of your levels and here's my initial thoughts.

Nice! Probably one of the coolest lighting / art schemes I've seen on the game.. also a very interesting storyline to go with it. Those two factors alone won me over in these levels. Just keeps you entertained throughout... even though there's still some fun and very interesting at time platforming thrown in.. it all just feels like a plus to the great art style/story.

There weren't many problems I had with them... only a few spots in the second and either third or fourth one where I could fall all the way down from some places down to another area, not sure how you could fix it... but it either set me back or put me way ahead of where I was supposed to be in the level(s).

Think it was chapter 5... The Burning Garden or whichever... think its after the first or second bird looking thing that takes you up.. there was a button and it made some stuff disappear... If you hit that button and fall down and die afterwards you would end up not being able to progress and have to restart the level.

I've only played 1-5 so far... but I certainly plan to play the rest and am eager to see how the story unfolds. Will leave some more feedback on those as I play them. You may have already fixed the problems I put up there since I played them a few days ago... sorry if I missed that. Great work though. I hearted you and the levels I've played so far. Rated some 4 stars some 5 stars dont remember which. Recommend all to check out this series... it is certainly worth the play.

Okay, I just played through episode 14. Here's my synopsis:

For those of you who are reading this who have not played the JonMartin apocalypse levels...

These levels are not little casual game experiences where things are spelled out for you, it is obvious where to step, or you can always tell what you are looking at. These are a completely new experience. You MUST sit down, turn out the lights, and start playing all the way through. Like a good movie you will be glued to the story and the gameplay.

Episode 14 is no different. The author seems to be going for a "order out of chaos" approach. That is, at first everything seems to almost be a random splatter of paint. But as you progress through the game you realize each part was carefully laid out. You start to realize that what you first thought were random paint splatters are actually images that form the story you are being told. You jump off what appear to be random platforms, only to realize the author nicely places you into the next part of the story. You grab a hold of a chunk off something to suddenly be carted off to the next part of your experience.

Brilliant.

There was one part in the game where I was engrossed in the story walking through this "random" splatter when I realized the images formed an insane-looking boy sitting in front of a computer. Wow.

I actually played this 3 times. The second time I took a different path and THOUGHT I was outside of the game, when suddenly a bubble pops up saying "where are you going, Sackboy? Don't you know we can see you everywhere?". Walked a little further and another bubble pops up and says "OK, now let's continue...". I got goosebumps. A little later I fell into another area (I don't think I could find it again if I tried) where I was walking for a while with nothing happening. I THOUGHT once again I had broken the system, when a bubble popped up saying "I guess they can't see me EVERYWHERE".

Pros:

+ Perception changing stuff!
+ Fantastic design. Should be required for every player 15-years-old and up. (not that younger players won't have fun, but these levels may require some additional maturity to appreciate. No hate mail please).
+ Each time I play these games I end up thinking about them for several days. MASTER storytelling. And I don't mean in a LittleBigPlanet kind of way. (I've drawn comparisons to David Lynch for the earlier games).

Cons:

- A few grammatical and spelling errors. (Wish there was a spell checker for all the magic mouths. I may play through again and make a list)
- Every once in a while I felt like there was a cheap death. However, it also fell into the ambience of the game, so I'm not complaining or suggesting it be changed.
- Sometimes a bubble would pop up but I was moving at the time and didn't get to read what it said. Maybe check to make sure a few of the bubbles are positioned so I'm not moving while it displays. (I remembering one happening when I was spinning on a wheel). I let go to drop so I could read it, but then it was conflicting with another one. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a fluke because it happened when I played through again. I REALLY want to know what the bubble said!

5 starts, heart!

Finally had a chance to get through all of these levels, here are my thoughts:

Pros:

- Originality. Your levels are the very definition of the word. You took the silhouette style and created an epic, sprawling universe around it. Original concepts need to be celebrated so give yourself a pat on the back.

- Narrative. I am a bookworm and been an avid reader ever since I was a kid. One of the things I like best about LBP is that we are given the freedom to tell our own stories and I love levels that really use narrative as a driving force. You made the decision to create a long, well thought out tale that I personally enjoyed very much. Thank you. Episode 14 was my favorite in this regard.

- Visuals. You have done some things in your levels that I have never seen done before. In some levels the visuals can only be described as scintillating and at some points it was almost too bright, too sharp, too much lol. One thing that particularly stood out for me were the peacock feathers in episode 5, simply breathtaking. There is something new and different to be seen in every level although often some elements are repeated (more on that later). Great job in creating a very unique visual style.

- Gameplay. For the most part we have a lot of platforming going on here but my favorite parts were in later episodes when you really change the gameplay. I am thinking of episode 12 (I think) which is essentially a vehicle level as well as the last couple of episodes when you use the paintgun to shoot obstacles out of your way as opposed to using it to kill enemies, very clever.

- I wish there was more use of music and sound but I did enjoy the parts where you used piano notes etc.

Cons/Suggestions:

- Don't take this the wrong way but these were some of the most frustrating levels I have ever come across. There is a fine line between something being challenging and something being frustrating and unfortunately most of your levels fall into the latter category for me (however, I did not tag your levels as frustrating because they are other things first before they are that). There are simply too many unnecessary deaths, too little direction, a few really irritating bugs (episode 12, vehicle breaks and I am stuck with nowhere to go for example) and far too few checkpoints. I have to be honest that I only finished half of your levels and I really have to question how much these levels were playtested ( I was very ****** off when I lost all my lives on Episode 14, especially since the story was getting so good). At certain points there is absolutely no clue as to where the player should go and I died so many times trying to jump to in this or that direction only to be taken back to a checkpoint 10 miles away (this particularly applies to the earlier levels in the series). There are also a few moments where you use cam zones that are really unnecessary and result in more death. I think a lot of tweaking can be done but if you do nothing else then add more double life checkpoints and a few speech bubbles directing the player in the right direction.

- The platforming got really tedious after a while. For the most part it was the same thing over and over again and many ideas were rehashed. I know with all these creations it must of been hard coming up with new ideas but still, it is something to think about.

- I love the visuals but the use of electrified object became very overused after a while. A bit more variety would be nice,

- In the first few levels there is a ton of visible dark matter and it looks really sloppy. You have probably been too busy creating the rest of the series but some polish is definitely in order once the series is complete.

I have to say that these levels were quite a journey that for the most part I really enjoyed. I hearted ep 1, 5, 12 and 14. You also earned a creator heart. I respect the fact that you had a vision for a story-driven series and you have been following it through ever since. Great work and I look forward to the next one.

Thanks for the lengthy review. I feel like commenting on a few of these things, hope that's ok :P

Yes, the levels are challenging... and they can be so challenging that frustration occurs Maybe people are just used to really easy levels? I don't think what I have is any more difficult than your average Mega Man level. All of the levels were play tested and beaten by my brother and my roommate.. and my brother doesn't even play games. My roommate got REALLY frustrated but he always wanted to continue (even when I was telling him to calm down), I mean, I am going for "just one more time" kind of gameplay. If it's difficult, so be it!

On a side note, I play-tested that vehicle into oblivion and yes, very rarely it does break and you fall out or you somehow get electrocuted. I tried my best to secure the vehicle but there's nothing else I could do. If there was a "don't break" thing I could add to it, I would! I think it turned out pretty **** good but I agree it's frustrating as hell when it breaks. I think if you don't TRY to break it, you'll probably be fine.

I think the electrified objects work in the context of the story... but I do agree that maybe dying that way gets tiresome.

I also agree about the old levels, I need to fix them up a bit, I just haven't had time.

Finally, I just want to say that... I understand the levels can be difficult. If you could easily fly right through it, you wouldn't be anticipating the story as much. ANYWAY... Now i have to finally get around to reviewing legion.. :P

I definately agree with both sides. In the context of a "general" level I think some of these mechanics would be problems.

But these aren't everyday levels. JonMartin is doing something different.

I don't know what it is, but for me at least none of these things were problems in the context of these levels. When things would go wrong, it almost seemed OK and added to the fun.

Case in point:

The other day I took a second player into 13 (I think... it was the one with the vehicle). As we were flying through at light speed a big chunk of floaty got wedged into the door. The craft started flipping around every which way until it actually burst into oblivion, sending us skyrocketing into electricity.

I think we both laughed for about 5 minutes! It was AWESOME! In my book there are 2 things that really appeal to me with these games: 1) the story, and 2) the level design is just crazy enough to allow unscripted great moments to occur (I don't even think the author thought of some of the things that would happen).

Many of them are rough (edit: rough isn't the word... Surreal is probably better), but in my personal opinion it adds to the character of the levels.

SERIES UPDATE: JANUARY 23rd 2009

EPISODE 15:

This is my most ambitious and complicated level. It's been quite a challenge learning how to juggle the story while still creating an entertaining playing experience. The small size of the speech bubbles doesn't help either, I can't tell you how many times I've had the perfect sentence only to be screwed over because it's one or two characters too long.

I've realized that the limits in LBP are a good thing though. I don't think I'd ever finish levels if the temperature didn't increase. With the text it's a good idea as well, it makes the creator of a level have to be more concise.

Anyway, the end of the series is getting closer and closer with only 3 episodes left. It's really worth it to get into the series, it'll make you think in different ways. I know that sounds ridiculous for a Little Big Planet game but it's true.

Episode 15:

Description: Sackboy enters the Clusterbay.
Estimated Level Play Time: 10-15 minutes
Level Type: Platforming :: Multi-path :: Story-based :: Minimalist ::

Even though I'm pretty proud of the series to this point, I have to wonder if the whole thing won't just fade into obscurity when it's done. I still have only around 250 plays for the first episode. Hopefully someday they'll mention it in a magazine or something.

Oh well. Enjoy the new level, it's worth turning your PS3 on for, seriously.

Just a few words: awesome, awesome, and awesome. I've been following this series for a while, and each time I play one I can't wait to see how the story continues. But I am glad the series will be done soon simply because I'm wondering how it ends.

This one is difficult, however I've played it through several times and if you pay attention to what's around you and take your time platforming it all makes sense - and there are some GREAT little surprises if you get off the beaten track a little.

Cheers!

I'm still constantly tweaking everything. People should really check out episode 2, it's a total new experience.. and pretty unique. No, there's nothing incredibly complicated about the gameplay in my levels... but it's an experience I'm pretty sure people will remember playing.

If you were put off by my earlier levels, please give it another go. If any of you have made levels, you know it takes time... well I've made 16 levels, I've devoted... wayyyyy....too much time to this game, lol. All I ask is that people give it a look, you don't even have to give feedback!

So recently i also managed to play through the whole series. You managed the varie the levels in a great way. I never got the chance to say: "i saw that before". Sometimes there are only some platforms you got to jump over. But it's not like "oh the creator was too lazy to do something good". It's more like a break between some really fancy stuff.
But there is something you could change. Sometimes when you fall it takes like an eternity to hit the ground and die. Sometimes you fall down to a place you have already passed and sometimes you even find some shortcuts. That really should be changed.
At this point i must say that i really liked episode 12. Just the idea of pushing electrified pink floaty out of the way with the paintinator is awesome. The vehicle passage apparently was my best driving experience ever in LBP. It's just so much fun smashing through all that floating stuff.
Well, i'm looking forward to play episode 17 ;)

I am sure you won't take this the wrong way... But When the people who are writing on this thread say that they have played all or most of your levels AND they say they are frustrating for the direction and the difficulty you may want to listen to them...

Obviously your levels are great... NO ONE is denying that... But the people who are commenting on this thread are not bad players... They are obviously into the game, and most definitely have skills. So if they find it frustrating, then it is likely it is.

And I don't want you to think I am telling you to dumb down your levels.

I am sure you can accept that there is a big difference between keeping a level hard, and just adding some direction and some spawn points, and tweeking things to make levels too easy. There is nothing worse than fighting your way through a cool level only to get close to then end and run out of lives and have to start over.

Anyway... I don't want you to think that I am dumping on your levels... And I know how hard it is to have to tweek something that you think is the bees knees. But, having people and have no cons to add to their feedback... That is nice.

That is my two little cents...

I'm really trying to figure out what you're telling me to do lol. I've edited pretty much all of my levels to address the previous stuff in this thread. EVERY level has been redone up until level 10...or I've fixed the difficulty problems and added checkpoints, made it more apparent which way to go.

Thanks for telling me all this... but I already did it. If you have specific examples, I would love to go change things and make it easier.

Thanks!

Lol.. no don't think like that. I just would rather you tell me if you have any specific examples. I hope my response didn't make me come off like I was mad. I just need more info so I can fix stuff. Believe me, I'd rather fix something than leave it.

If you still can't think of anything, I understand because some of the levels even I have to start over again on.... but I think there's a difference between a hard LBP level and one that is just created badly. I want my levels to be somewhat of a challenge because the whole driving force is the story and the art... and for me it's more fun if it's difficult to get to the next chunk of story.

I will keep what you say in mind though for future levels :D

dobi6
02-18-2009, 05:22 PM
Ok, you wanted a specifics... I Just played the first 3 levels several times... And I will give my take on them:

First off, I thought the levels were gorgeous... but do get a bit much for the eyes after a while.

Level 1:
The only thing I can say about this (other than the being gorgeous part) is that I could see a couple of emitters.

Level 2:
I know you said you have made these levels easier and added more spawn points. But You didn't. In the very beginning the camera is locked in, so when you are running off to the right, it is very possible to run off the edge into your death because you can't see where you are going. Kind of cheap way to die that isn't because of skill.

I thought that your platforms were a bit too small in many cases - 4 tiny blocks big makes for HUGE pain. They are manageable, but they take away from the enjoyment.
I thought you need to make more use of double spawn points, and I would put them in the middle of sections, you need more frequent ones. I was able to progress nicely, but you are going to make a lot of people not bother to go any further because of this, and that means they won't look at any of your other levels - artist genius aside.

I thought the springy arms that slap you were awesome.

I thought your electricity and glass area was really annoying. It needs more spawn points. It was so annoying that after several plays, I didn't bother going past it. People get tired of having to get their button presses 100% right all the time... Most people want to be able to do 80-90% and be happy.

It is a shame really, because the level was super cool... But It wasn't worth it to me to just get mad at sliding into electricity constantly, and then having to go way back to have to do it all over again.

Level 3:
Level 3 falls into the same traps as Level 2. It causes a lot of cheap deaths - right from the start. And then you have to go a really long distance to make up for your mistakes because of your sparce spawn points.

There were several spots where I found the cameras being locked in preventing me from seeing when I needed to let go of a piston-sponge because the piston-sponge I watched go below me became out of view.

Once again... After spending a lot of time at it... I didn't bother finishing...

Your art direction on these levels are great. And part of me wants to see more. But the frustration level makes it not worth it. I could spend a lot of time and go through them all. But because there is so much starting over (both from the beginning and from each far away spawn point) it doesn't seem worth it to me right now.

Anyway... I think you have great levels, aside from those comments... And I will definitely be playing the others, and giving feedback on them.

Thanks for the comments again, I'm pretty sure I fixed the problem you had with level 2. There weren't enough checkpoints in one part. As for the other stuff, I'm not really sure.

I can think of many games that have driven me to throwing my controller in frusrtation.. and most of those games were fun.. and even though I got mad and stormed off, I still came back if I could tell what I did wrong.

Like another poster said I think although things may get frustrating, you always know WHY you die...

That said, I'm gunna check out level 3 as well and add some checkpoints or make some other small changes.

Thanks for the long and detailed feedback, I'll be sure to do some feedback for you.

EDIT: Added checkpoints in 3 and added tried to reduce the frustrating parts. Hope you like the changes.

Ok... Well, I will try them again... But as of this morning today, they were battles of frustration. And the worst are the cheap deaths... The ones caused by camera angles and stuff that isn't your fault.

Hey Snowspot! I finally sat down and played through the first five levels in your Little Big Apocalypse series. From the levels I played and the pictures I've seen concerning future levels, the visual styles you've developed with the silhouette look are pretty freaking cool. They are all pretty crazy, but there seems to be a method to your madness!

Most of my comments have already been addressed, but I'll add that I did find some of the platforming in a couple levels to be rather frustrating. I will admit that I'm into the easier levels though, so I'm sure the hardcore players will love the challenge of your levels.

I plan to continue playing through the series and look forward to all the crazy visuals that await me!

Thanks for giving it a look, I'll be sure to leave u some feedback sometime soon.

I wish more people would give it a shot.

The newest level is unlike anything else at LBP.

I love this series, the story is great! I'm only up to episode 3 but I plan to finish the whole series by the end of this weekend ;).

UPDATE: 5/10

In the past 2 weeks I've updated Episode 1,2,4, and 7. Most are drastically different and episode 7 looks pretty crazy.

I dunno why I post though it's not like people will suddenly take interest -_-

All of this is to get me warmed up for episode 20. Episode 21 will be the final animated episode of the series. I've been doing a lot of animation work too to get ready for episode 21. I have two endings in mind, one happy, one sad, still not sure which one I'm going to go with. The animated episode will be really high quality though, better than any non-game LBP media thus far, better than the stuff that's gotten headlines anyway.

Can't wait to finish this stuff, I'm hoping in a year or so when I've stopped playing, my levels and series will become popular. I have no clue why it isn't now, it confuses the hell out of me. I see some of the dumbest levels getting thousands of views o_O.

If you want a vacation from the boring greys and browns of most levels, play LBA!
