View Full Version : PSP problems again.. Ugghhh..

I really badly wanted to finish this level I've had sitting on my moon for ages, but now I can't get my game to work.

My PSP has had this freezing and shutting off problem for awhile, but then for the past two weeks, it magically was working fine.

But as of yesterday, it stopped working again. This time, it can't read UMD's (and I only have games as UMDs) :().

When I put the UMD in, it sounds like it starts spinning, but it's pretty loud and jerky. It has the little loading circles on the bottom right corner but it just never actually loads, so I cannot select the game to start playing.

I have tried with many games; none work.

I have the original PSP (like the 1000 one or whatever), if that helps.

However, I'm not going to pump any more money into this PSP because it's very old and I'm planning on getting a Vita anyway. Honestly, I just want to finish this one level and publish it, and maybe play a few.

So if anyone has any advice for fixing it that won't actually require buying a new piece or anything, that would be greatly appreciated.

I've had this problem with my first psp too, and I couldn't get it to run a game properly since. I used to open the disc place thingymajingy(I forgot what it's called) just about half a cm and leave it that way, it loaded fine for a couple of days that way. But that wouldn't work either after some time. So I guess the best thing to do is buy a digital version of the game, especially if you're planning to get the vita anyways.

... or you can install Custom Firmware, make a backup from LBP and run it from your memory stick... http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q559/Schark6000/Other%20stuff/Trollface.png

Well technically using it for making backups isn't illegal but sending them into the internet yes.^^

It's not illegal unless you download illegal free games.
Tampering with the firmware is ok. I did to my psp 3000. So it is completely safe.
I don't know if a psp 1000 is easier to use, but it's possible.

I'm not sure what you mean by custom firmware, I've really never tried tampering with my PSP in anyway and I'm kind of... technologically impaired for the most part.

I feel like the hardware itself might be the problem, and that it might be fixable.

It can spin a little bit, it just doesn't seem to stay spinning and makes clicking sounds, then never loads. I just have no idea what to actually try to do to fix it.

And I'd rather not drop another $20 on a game I already have, because I'll just buy the Vita LBP and probably never play again. Plus I only have a 1gb memory stick and I think LBP was like 1.5 gbs, so that'd be even more.

I wouldn't meddle with custom firmware. You can easily further your problems by installing it. And if it is a hardware problem, it would be rather pricy to fix. I say you shouldn't waste any more time and money on your PSP, so you can go out and get a vita. It's worth it.

Heheheh I have custom firmware. I know everything about it, so I didn't have any problems. ;)

@metsfan - you said that you have a 1GB memory stick. How much free space do you have now?

Yeah, if it's a hardware problem, which what you describes sounds like one, then custom firmware wouldn't do anything to help you out. Try googling to find people with a similar problem if you haven't yet.

My PSP has a similar problem where it won't read UMD's all the time. When it doesn't work, I hit it a few times. Then, it gets scared that I might hit it again, so it starts working. :D

Hmm... Interesting... It is possible that SONYs new firmware 6.60 could have some bugs that cause this, because much people have this problem. Just a small suggestion from me.^^

@Cory and metsfan - what firmwares do you guys have?

@Val: That's what I was thinking, rather just have a Vita.

@Schark: I have like 100MB left I believe, but I could honestly delete everything except my LBP save data and it wouldn't bother me.

@Woodbury: I tried but I didn't have too much time when I did. A lot of people have a similar problem as mine, but it had so many different possible causes that I couldn't really single it out.

@Cory: That's interesting, because a lot of times my whole PSP freezes and shuts off and it only works again when I bang it on something a few times. I'll try that in a little bit.

@Schark: I believe I downloaded 6.60 if that's a System Update. I usually do system updates when it tells me to.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Considering how close this thing is to the end of its life, I wouldn't mind opening it up and trying to fix it myself. Does anyone know anything about the insides of a PSP? I feel like it might be something simple like the disc spinner is jammed, I'm just clueless how to do anything with the hardware.

Oh I wouldn't do this because something could easily go wrong. ;)
Make some more space on your mem stick so that you get minimum 500 MB, this worked by Doggy and he had a similar problem.

I have a four gig card. So I have no problems.

You're still talking about custom firmware right? Idk if I want to do that.

The thing is, I'm expecting to not be able to play my PSP ever again. So even if I open it up and something goes wrong, it's better than not trying. I just think it'd be better to have an idea what I'd do if I opened anything up. But it's beginning to sound like opening it up and meddling with it is very difficult.

My PSP has been like that for a while. I can garentee mine wasn't from a firmware update. I probably just "accidentally" dropped it a few times. ;)

When it doesn't work, I hear the disk spin for a few seconds then there's a little click noise then a few seconds later the disk stops spinning. Then it takes like a minute for my PSP to realize the disk didn't read, and it gives me the alert message that it didn't read.

No I was talking about your memory stick. Just make some more space on your mem stick and try then to launch your game.

@Cory: That sounds like my problem, though I never let it run long enough to say it didn't read. It's clearly not reading though.

@Schark: Will having more open memory on my stick actually help with anything though? That was never a problem before I haven't put anything new on it in a very long time.

It worked by Doggy, so try this. It's not that hard is it? :)

Okay well I temporarily fixed the problem :) ! Thank you all.

I forgot I downloaded Killzone during that free game period after the PSN hacking, so I deleted that since I never play it to clear some memory.

Then I slammed the PSP on a table a few times and squeezed the back really tight as I turned it on to make sure the disc would catch on the spinny thing.

I'm not sure what worked, but I was able to play through Spark's entire Journey series which I DL'ed just before the PSP stopped working.

Hopefully I can go back to creating this weekend!

So clearing some space did the trick. http://i1163.photobucket.com/albums/q559/Schark6000/Other%20stuff/Trollface.png
