View Full Version : Odd Censored LBP Words

Ok, I didn't really see any threads like this, so I decided to step up and make one. This is for all us creators that get really irritated at the fact that the censorship system is completely wacked out and finds all the small words inside big words and completely replaces your speech bubble with aterisks. So without further ado... List your "bad words" and I'll make a huge list for future creators.

NOTE: The base word will be underlined, avoid using the base word when creating!

The Bad Word List:

-Analog
-Analysis
-Blistering
-Chatter
-Cockpit
-Computer
-Entering
-Grapes
-Happened
-Humpty
-Immortal
-Opened
-Osiris
-Peacock
-Pedestal
-Penetrable
-Punching
-Reputation
-Scum
-Skyscrapers
-Stampede
-Stinger
-Sweltering
-Torpedo
-Trapeze
-Unremovable
-x3

It doesn't allow me to underline the first four letters in cockpit, the last four in peacock, and the last three in scum, so use your common sense and don't use them I guess. :p

Thanks for making the thread, Whaaaaale. Maybe the mods could sticky it some place.

I can understand some words like cockpit, although it's a really frustrating example - what do you call the bit which a pilot sits in? a *******.

I have no idea how the word "happened" managed to get censored. It was only because of play-testing and also noticing that OCK was having trouble with this word that it's been identified.

Whalio Cappuccino

Yeah, I'm trying to find some word that seems to be placed inside "happened" but I'm not good at finding words within words.

Oh,
I had exactly the same idea and was thinking opening the same thread today.
You was faster ;)

I started a very short list but it seems you already took all my words it in consideration.
I will add new words if i find them.

If i can give an aedvice, it would be to write the list in alphabetical order. Moreover, i think this thread could be sticked.

Well isn't it obvious? It's a very offensive word-inside-a-word at that. Obviously you did not watch the Simpsons, otherwise you too would be offended by any mention of that dorkily-dokily-doo Ned Flanders... Stupid Flanders! I for one am glad they are preventing us from being reminded of him at every mention of that word. God could you imagine all the dokilies and mustaches we'd have invading our minds if it weren't censored??

I still can't believe the asterisk problem is actually a censoring system... it's such a *dumb* censoring method that any half-witted developer should have been able to see the problems coming a mile away. Whoever wrote that particular bit of code definitely does not impress me in the slightest.

For people still wondering why "happened" would be in that list. It contains "pene" which is a spanish word for, well I'll let you do the guessing...

I think through further testing and adding to this list we should be able to figure out the actual underlying black list they use and avoid all words that contain them.

I'm mostly surprised that with such a dumb system there haven't been more problems.

Could be two words, too, perhaps.

Like "chase after the doc until we send back-up".

There's a bad word in there which is split up by a space.
The whole thing would be turned into ****************.

I only suppose this, but I think that 'happened' is censored due to 'pene' the Italian name of the male sexual organ.

Because of the game is sold translated in many languages (including Italian) (this not happens for the edited levels of course) I think that's the reason.

Wouldnt add all those words to your list... maybe just Penetrable and Impenetrable.

I'll have to agree below and just leave it at just Words containing Pene.... but Penetrable and Impenetrable are probably most used out of all those.

I could see myself using some of the words in Doctor Ramatool lists, but a lot of them are just really obscure.

I'd recommend just keeping it to words we know have not malfunctioned. I don't think anyone has tested the point that it could be a part of the word "happened" that is causing it to censor, so listing every single vague possibility is not always a good idea. :(

Well... I guess we know what our next crusade should be after MM fix the various recent bugs :p

I get the feeling whoever wrote the Search engine also wrote this little piece of code... the careless style seems similar.

I suppose I should remove the word "happened" from Midnight Train now that I know that it was the one responsible for the speech bug I had. As a show of protest though, I think I will not remove the words that trip the censors, but deliberately misspell them somehow.

Their censoreship system really is crap. I'm sorry but I think it's beyond ridiculous to start finding words within words.

Actually, it's not what they do, it's just because the way they programmed their thing is really bad. They simply check and match letters. When some letters are adjacent they simply cancel the whole word it was in.

The intelligent way to make a censorship system is to make a word database and check after every word the player writes. Seriously.

The game is rated E for everyone, if the game doesn't let you write certain words then it totally is doing its homework. The way people might interpret some words and finding words between words is people's problem, not the game. When I write "cockpit" it means "cockpit" and not "****". I should have the right to write that just like the word "cockpit" can be seen ANYWHERE and in kids programs because it simply doesn't mean "****".

Also, If by their censorship logic they need to censor words withing words, why are they permitting the chat via headset? I can tell you really bad things if I want. Why is headset communications permitted? Simply because it's not the problem of the game but the one of people. Since their censorship isn't well thought out or making sense, they don't apply this principle with text.

.

Whalio Cappuccino
01-15-2009, 12:33 AM
Yeah, it's really stupid. And even worse is, if one of your sentences says something like...

"It was basic until the monster grew huge" ( Yeah... Wtf? )

It would censor it, because the c in basic and the first 3 letters in until, spell a bad word. It's just really lame... :p

Well, as far as this is concerned... take is from the developers point of view. If they didn't offer mic support they'd be nailed to the wall... no question. The other thing is, censoring text is infinitely easier than voice. If you were to censor voice you'd have to have a ridiculous amount voice recognition software that would have to process everything that's being transmitted and then filter it out... which would create a completely unacceptable amount of lag. Not to mention the fact that the software would inevitably cancel words out that we'd use in common language. There's no way I would even approach blaming them for voice chat. I will whole-heartedly agree with you that their system of censorship is pretty hideous at the moment, though. Admittedly, they are choosing to include vulgar language from every supported language... which is a pretty long list if you think about it. I'm not saying it's an excuse, but compared to other games, it's clearly a much easier task to filter out the language the game was released in rather than create a global filter. So, yes, I'm willing to give them a little breathing room on the issue... but come on... some of the words mentioned here that have been filtered are simply ridiculous.

Add "torpedo". I had to purposely misspell it "Torpeedo" in RRX 2 because the correct spelling contains "pedo" (I guess it's a slang term for pedophile, how stupid). Which, I think, is a little ridiculous. As someone who holds proper grammar and spelling in such high regard, it really ticked me off to have to spell it incorrectly.

So you had to change a non-offensive full word (torpedo) into a badly spelt word which contains another (slightly) less offensive term...

Sigh... it sure is a silly system. :(

I'm more offended by bad spelling and grammer than I am at trying to find offensive words in normal words.

This is a good thread, although I think it's beating around the bush of the problem. From what I understand, instead of doing a simple find and replace of bad words, which would result in "com****r" when you type "computer," they censor the whole word, resulting in "********." Frankly this is bizarre. It's actually more complex to do it this way, and it obfuscates what is being censored.

I think what you should do, Wha{5}le, is replace the OP with just the regional curse words (You're currently missing the word censored above, among others), or link to full list of censored words. It makes little sense to compile a list of words you have subjectively determined to be useful.

Actually... the entire speech bubble is censored if any one of the "series of letters" blacklisted are found. So if you happen to write "happened" (or any word containing "pene" separated by spaces or not) your entire speech bubble is rendered useless.

What's even more shocking is that the author gets no indication that this has happened unless they go INTO their level and check every single speech bubble after having published. Even if they DO notice, there's no indication that it's the censoring system, and even less indication of why it was censored.

Overall, it's a very weak part of LBP and should be adressed by MM in the near future.

Well, that really is weak sauce. I think in Home they just replace the word, even if it's "Hello." Hopefully they get around to improving this system, or at least give some list of words the green light.

I realize this, I'm merely observing that you haven't added some of the roots responsible for the censorship. Computer is censored because of 'puta', which Gilgamesh pointed out is a curse in Spanish. Also, no one has figured out why 'osiris' is censored.

Oh... in computer there is com-pute-r, that is a french word for...hum...beach...
In addition, there is some french words in the Doctor Ramatool's list.. These are certainly the ones you thought obscure.

Francais for "beach" is la Chienne(dog or unplesent slang), or garce (lewd woman), or Plainte (complement), or Saloperie (unplesent slang)

I thank its "puter" thats sensored, Puter is redneck for a womans reproductive organ.

It is funny that Mm reads analog skyscraper as anal raper...:p

Thank you for reminding me. I was curious about Osiris myself, so I've run a little test.

The censor picks up on "Osiri", and through extensive research I've found that "Osiri" is japanese for a person's rear-end.

If this is so, this raises another serious problem. Japanese people never write in Romaji, always in Kana or Kanji. You can see this clearly if you've ever played a japanese LBP level. It's thus completely pointless to look for japanese words in Romaji to censor... because no one uses those! :grr:

My god... The system is getting worse and worse by the second! Run!

@Lokno; Ah, I see, Alright I'll see what I can do, but remember this is an E rated site, actually I don't think I'd put the base words up there, simply because this is an E rated site, and having the sentences "The base word anal will be censored, or the base word puta willl be censored." It just seems too risky, I'd rather just leave it like this, and maybe underline the base word in every word?

Even though Japanese don't write using Romanji, they type using it. The program then takes the romanji code and converts it into the various characters we normally see. Japanese keyboards are very similar to western ones in this reguard.

So that would explain why it's censoring a word that we would normally see in character format, because that's exactly the same code being put in. It's just with the language set to Japanese, the computer then converts it into the Japanese alphabets.

Gilgamesh

Actually, Japanese keyboards allow one to write in Kana directly, as they can be mapped to the keys easily. I have researched and found about what you've mentioned, but it seems to only apply to Kanji which makes some sense (I've read there are about 4000 symbols or such).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_language_and_computers#Text_input

Generally though, even though "Osiri" and "おしり" are pronounced the same way (which is actually false, the second character is Shi, Si does not exist). To a computer, the keycodes are far from being the same.

In any case, the censoring of the name "Osiris" is a good example why this doesn't work. I think if we continue to compile this list of benign censored words, we'll have some ammunition to send to MM to ask that they fix it. :)

I've just tested and Oshiri is also censored, but that one should be... I guess.

Well, they may have censored the romanization just to cover their bases. Most Japanese players may not enter a romanization of a word, but it's still likely that they'll understand it if they see it. You can rest assured that the kana and kanji versions are also censored.

My suggestion to Mm would be to create a list of accepted words, and allow these words to override the censoring of blurb. I don't know why their censoring code is so simplistic, but it's possible that its from Sony's API, since Home has a simpler problem ("Hello" was censored for some time, not sure if it still is).

I'm going to try to test the root of "entering" tonight and do some research on why it's really being censored. I highly doubt it's because of Ent, that was only a suggestion someone made.

Through testing, the root of "entering" being censored is "tering". According to urbandictionary, "tering" means "****it". I have no idea which language it is from though, here's the quote :

1. Tering!

Like ****it in english.
Tering het is koud!
(*****it, it's so cold!*)

Edit : Further research shows this to be Dutch.

tameturtle

Dutch "tering" means tuberculosis.

There's another quite grave problem with the implementation of the censoring system. In-game messages you type get censored too. The bizarre thing is, your fellow players see an all-asterisks text bubble hovering over your sackperson, but on your screen the bubble shows your message as typed. So, there's no way for you to know you just got censored, unless your fellow players inform you.

This system is broken in so many ways it's not funny. And a needlessly oppressive idea in itself to begin with.

Edit: "x3" is also a censored combination. Which is not only nonsensical, but very annoying because "x3-power" is a prolific and helpful commenter, making most people's first personal reply to him go all asterisky. :(

This entire thread lists the many flaws with the censoring system. As well as compiling a list of benign words (like happened, which I had the misfortune of using myself) that are being censored. Let's just say... MM/Sony (I'm not sure who developed the system) have a lot of work cut out for them to fix this.

NEWSFLASH: Well, it looks like it's worse than I initially imagined. If you copy a published level back onto your moon, your magic mouth retains the censor, meaning the contents of your mouth are gone forever if you didn't have another copy on your moon. I can never fix the one magic mouth on Midnight Train because I forgot what it said exactly, only that it used the word "happened". Thanks MM/Sony. :(

-Analog
-Analysis
-Cockpit
-Computer
-Entering
-Grapes
-Happened
-Opened
-Osiris
-Penetrable
-Reputation
-Skyscrapers
-Torpedo
-Trapeze
-x3
-Pedestal

It doesn't allow me to underline the first four letters in cockpit, so use your common sense and don't use that I guess. :p

I think MM should make a list of word that contain bad words but are normal words that have nothing bad about it. These words would not be censored, and even though they contain a word that wouldn't be appropriate for LBP, you could say it. They could check this thread to find any words that would be O.K., but are Censored in LBP.
They wouldn't Un-Censor the words, they would un-censor any words they find in this thread that shouldn't be censored.
FOR EXAMPLE: If you said Opened, it would say "Opened". But if you said Pene, it would say "*******".

The problem is, making a list of "words-that-should-not-be-censored" would take a long time. If I worked at MM, I don't think I'd want to spend the whole shift looking for words that have censored words in them...

Here's something that I wanted to see in a game for a while: Online searching. While publishing, the game would search through an online dictionary for all words in magic mouths. If the word has a bad definition, it would become censored. This data would be saved on the server, so if you changed a word and republished, it would only search that changed word(s).
This could also work for other games. For example, in Guitar Hero 4, you could record your voice (or speakers). When publishing your song, the game would search online to check if the recording is licensed.

A whitelist would be easy to implement, just would require some commitment to find all the words that have bad words in them. What they need to do, since b a d w o r d ends up in an uncensored word, is to read entire words at a time, not just blindly look for bad words wherever they happen to fall.

Searching a dictionary isn't fast xD

Was actually a project for one of my classes to search the Bible. The prof could find a word in 24 seconds; fastest student time was around 30 seconds.

It is a decent idea though. Perhaps the level would be uploaded, then scanned, then available to play.

But

They'd only need bad words in the dictionary, since those are the only ones they're doing anything with
So just have a list of bad words

RangerZero
06-16-2009, 01:59 PM
I don't know if they can implement a list of words. Right now, the way their code work is that they check LETTERS and not words.

Each letter is attributed an identity. Per example, if "C" is 1, "K" is 2, F is "3" and "U" is 4. There's a string in program that tells if "3,4,1 and 2" are written in succession = erase.

So let's say we want to uncensored the word "Canal". This means it might also uncensore "anal" since now those letters CAN be put in succession.

Now if their code is well done, it might check for an exception and still prevent "anal" and permit "canal" because one of the letter string would be in "exception".

------

All in all, it could be possible to correct their censorship system but I suspect it to be some really simple AND badly designed code. If they had any thought in it, it would do what I explained up there. They simply sort of threw in a censorship system without much thinking --- and color me NOT surprised, this game is a cluster**** of bad design decision almost everywhere.

.

CCubbage
06-16-2009, 03:21 PM
Yeah, as far as I can tell right now it's just a "contains" function that checks if the string contains certain words. They have to be really careful because it would be easy for people to get around their censorship if they didn't.

For instance, in the above case with "anal", some smart alec would simply put "cANAL" to make part of the word stand out - there's a lot of idiots out there that would pull these kinds of pranks, so MM is just being cautious, and at the same time creating an irritating side effect.

It's certainly possible for them to build an algorithm to make this better, but they are probably on the side of caution right now so their game can stay rated for "everyone".

Gilgamesh

I haven't personally tested "x3" so I can't confirm whether it's actually censored or if it's just a hoax. However, one possible rationale is if "x3" = "xxx".

rtm223
06-16-2009, 03:49 PM
Realistically, automatic censorship systems don't really work very well. A basic algorithm won't cut it. A complex algorithm generally will take longer and still not be all that good.

A mind-bogglingly complex natural language processor parsing in multiple languages and also understanding human visual interpretations of capitalisations (as Ccubbage pointed out), special characters, abbreviations, txt speak, 1337 speak, numerics etc. etc. would maybe not have any loopholes.

But let's be honest, there would still be some. And some people will still try (and almost certainly succeed) to break it. So what is the point? I don't think the censorship is badly designed - in the face of an essentially impossible task, they've gone for a simple, overzealous solution.

What the system needs is local censorship - so you can be alerted to a mouth that will be censored before you publish. A big red exclamation mark in create mode along with a highlight on the offending letters would do this. It would still be annoying, but you can easilly check, edit, confirm and everything sould be simple, from a creator's point of view

They really just need a word-by-word censor. There's nothing you can do about people who want to evade a censor. They will. I've seen plenty of LBP levels with cursing (like, 2, but that's plenty :p). But censoring perfectly legitimate words like 'computer' as a by-product is just silly.

Yeah, they block out any words containing words that are on a "blacklist" but I assume there is also a list of exceptions. Pass would be an exception, but they must not have included trespass.

Dang nabbit, I just started making Sheriff Sack 2 and hit a problem right away.

I have a part at the beginning with stampeding horses to get past and put a magic mouth in which is censored.

I'm guessing from the first post that the offending word is stampede but that's stuffed it completely. If anyone knows another word for stampede I'd love to know it.

What's even more crazy is that the sound speaker I've used is the one from the History pack which clearly states that the sound is 'stampede'. How come Mm can use these words and we can't ??

New to LBP; just published my first ever level yesterday and was totally baffled to find three of my entire dialogue bits ***********ed to oblivion; took me forever to even realize it was a censorship issue because they were all seemingly inocuous. Eventually realized the offender was "punching." Made it "thwacking" and balance was restored... but you might want to add that to the list.

Gilgamesh
09-30-2009, 07:41 PM
Yes... the lack of censorship feedback if among one of my biggest peeves with the system. I could deal with the ridiculousness of the words it censors if it actually bothered to tell me "Certain speech in your level has been censored due to the following word : xxxx". As it is, the only way to find out about it is to go through every magic mouth in the level after publishing, which becomes a real pain when dealing with event-triggered speech. And this is only if you actually *know* that there is such a censor in place to begin with, which many people don't.

What's even worse, and that I found out only later, is that the censor actually gets rid of the "offending" speech at the source. So if you copy the level back to your moon, you *cannot* fix your magic mouth because it just contains "**********" when you copy it back. It's just a poorly thought out and poorly executed system overall.

"punching" seems like a strange word to censor. I'll have to run some tests to see what the root word could be, because I really don't see anything wrong at first glance.

The part being censored in "punching" is "unchi" which is a japanese word for excrement apparently. I'll check out coaxial.

Also, when you text someone else, the text shows up regularly for you, but is censored on their end. So you have no idea if they even read what you typed, which is extremely annoying when you chat using the PS3 controller like me.

It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it. :p

It's essentially the same as what I do for a living, tracking down and precisely identifying and correcting bugs in software.

I think at the very least we could ask MM for a notification popup when some text is censored (both chat and after publishing). I can't imagine it would be difficult to implement.

Ideally they should overhaul the whole thing and remake it from scratch the right way. There's not much chance of that happening though since it's not a widespread enough problem to concern them.

Not so Gilgamesh. They are censored on 'My Moon' too.

I am currently working on Sheriff Sack 2 and took mrsvista and Icemaiden in to it on 'My Moon' to have a sneak peek at it. When we got to a part with a "stampede" where I had a magic mouth saying just that Icemaiden said it was censored to her even though I could read it ok. It was because of that I checked this thread and found out "stampede" was the censored word. I would never have known otherwise.

It's really stupid though because apparently the "'pede" in it is the censored part. I don't know why that is but if it's something to do with "paedophile" then it's censored for no good reason because as you can see it's spelt totally differently. It starts with "paed".

Gilgamesh
10-01-2009, 10:11 PM

EDIT: Just wiki'd that and it isn't nice at all. However that makes me even more disgusted at Mm or Sony ( whichever of them put this ridiculous censoring in place ) because it's a word from the 6th Century BC that billions of people have probably never even heard of and wouldn't have a clue about, myself included.

With censoring like this where just a few letters from an obsolete word/s and every language in the world is taken into account then you could make a case for censoring every single word that's ever been invented.

It's about time they started using some common sense instead of willy-nilly censoring for no good reason.

I thought some might find this interesting. In my "Real Myst: Channelwood Age" level I had a grab switch connected to a magic mouth that kept getting censored. So I changed the wording around several times, but no luck. So finally, I moved the censored mouth (and grab switch) to a different location in the level and it worked! The words were censored on the left side of the map, but not on the right. Go figure that one out.

So if you have a censored mouth, when all else fails, try moving the mouth and switch to a different location.

Hey guys, just wanted to add a quick note in the event that no one has noticed (to be fair, I didn't see a post about it). The extraordinarily strong censor is not unique to LBP, actually, and I doubt it is the fault of the developers.
Rather, Sony has put that incredibly odd and strict form of censorship on the ps3's communications themselves. If you open a person to person chat with someone on your friend list directly from the XMB outside of a game, you will find that your chat "room" is policed in the same manner. It is not something that can be toggled off, unfortunately.

I chat in a session quite often with a particular friend of mine, and we have had a terrible time with this censor. Not only does it pick out things that could potentially be insulting, but it tends to do so for ALL languages, and even incorrect spellings. You can't even write a double Z in stead of S in one particular word. It even blocks the English version of the Japanese version of English swear words. :D

Really, though, it's far too sensitive. Unfortunately, many of those "offensive" words in other languages are, as you noticed, common roots for innocuous English phrases. So words like "Bosses" and "Significant," "Connection," or even "Trigger" or "Icon" get blocked.
There are also the ones listed here, for the most part. Strange things like X3. And some others that just blew my mind, like "idiot" is blocked, as well as "nazi," "yankee" and even "macaroni," as strange as it sounds.

Ironically, I didn't even know that "macaroni" used to be something that one might possibly consider offensive, by any stretch of the imagination... until the censor taught me. :P Probably not the best idea in the world.

In any case... if you would like to get an idea of what other words you might add to your list of possibles, I would say that opening a friend to friend chat from the XMB is a good place to start. While not every phrase will end up blocked by LBP in the same way (I can't say for sure), you can bet that most of them will. So it's a decent place to test without actually testing the ropes.

Very strange, it seems that the word "mange" is being censored. Off the top of my head, I have no idea why this is. Maybe it's slang in some foreign language other than French.

Edit: Found it, it's another japanese naughty slang. I'm getting a little tired of the dumb, bargain-bin censoring system picking up on those. Is it *really* that hard to tell whether a text is written in Japanese or in another language?

Rant: The more I see it, the more I know I could bang up a better censoring system given one weekend and some coffee. It was something like : "This is a level based on a vidcomic from up your arsenal, please let me know if you manage to get into the back two layers as this is for a comp. the q on the platforms stand for qwark"

Well, I guess we won't be talking about American actress Hilary S**** much, here or in LBP then. Wonder if she can sue people for that? Hmmm...

Probably not.

The word "scout" is also on the "off-limits within on-line LBP levels" list. [shrug]

I'm almost positive I've seen scout in a level. Are you sure?

I'll test it.

Edit: Scout isn't censored....
