I'm not completely sure this belongs here, but it seems right, sooo...

Over in the Artwork forum, we started having a discussion about having a SotW(Sig of the Week) contest. However, it was in not the topic of the thread, so that's why I'm creating this one. I placed it here because I'd like a go ahead from CC, however, I'd also like to use this thread to have a discussion as to what the rules would be, assuming we get the go ahead. Here's what I'm thinking:

- Rotating panel of judges, so that all may participate.

- Host may participate but may not judge.

- You can submit as many sigs as you'd like.

- All sigs must comply with the topic of the SotW.

- I'm thinking an experience reward for first, second, and third places, in the amounts of 100, 50, and 20 respectively, and(maybe?) a sticker unique to each SotW for first place.

That's all I can think of for now, so what do you guys think? I'd be willing to host, personally, as well as making the unique stickers.

Edit: CC has ok'ed it, but we still need to work on the rules.

Good idea posting this, I was going to just contact everyone by profile messages (well all 4 of us who showed interest) but this is much easier.

- I was thinking of a similar idea for the judging. I figured we could have 3-4 judges that alternate each week (and who know maybe guest judges every once in a while if this gets popular).

- A judge will post a subject, then the next judge will vote at the end of the week and submit his own subject. That way all this can be handled by a single judge/week and there will be one single post with the winners followed by the next theme.

- The way I figure it, a judge can participate every week, even his own judging week, but if he does submit a sig during his week, that sig is automatically not admissible (for obvious reasons) but he can still post it just for fun.

- As for the Host, I see no reason why it could not be one of the judges. I think this would make the most sense. When I think host I think guy who starts the thread, and then it's up to the judges to keep it going. wioth 3 or 4 judges/hosts, this should be easy enough to keep organised.

- For experience, I think we should start with a single prize each week. Sig of the week you know! Lol, seriously though the reason I think this is because we don't know how many people will participate, and to make it easy to gain steam, only having to pick one winner will be alot easier on the judges. I should know, I had a hard enough time deciding winners for the captions contest that week Scythe was gone, sometimes they are just all great :) So my vote would go for 150xp for the winner each week.

- The stickers can be a good idea, but it's relative. I doubt most sigs will make good templates for a sticker... I think maybe a Sticker of the Week (seperate) contest would be more appropriate in that case...

Ok so those are my ideas, back to you Bass and any one else who wants to input. Oh and yes I would like to be one of the judges, I enjoy giving out fun themes as much as doing the actual creating.

Great idea! Get the creative juices flowing! What are you thinking for weekly topics?

- A judge will post a subject, then the next judge will vote at the end of the week and submit his own subject. That way all this can be handled by a single judge/week and there will be one single post with the winners followed by the next theme.

Yes, this sounds good.

- The way I figure it, a judge can participate every week, even his own judging week, but if he does submit a sig during his week, that sig is automatically not admissible (for obvious reasons) but he can still post it just for fun.

Well, the way you have it up above, I see no reason why the judge for the week couldn't participate and be judged, since the judge for the next week is the one posting the winner. Of course, the judge for the next week couldn't seriously participate.

- As for the Host, I see no reason why it could not be one of the judges. I think this would make the most sense. When I think host I think guy who starts the thread, and then it's up to the judges to keep it going. wioth 3 or 4 judges/hosts, this should be easy enough to keep organised.

Well, the reason I put that is because the way I was thinking that the host would be permanent, but having the judge for the week be the host sounds more logical.

Good point. Maybe later we could add prizes for second or third, but for now for all we know everyone who participates might place.

- The stickers can be a good idea, but it's relative. I doubt most sigs will make good templates for a sticker... I think maybe a Sticker of the Week (seperate) contest would be more appropriate in that case...

I wasn't thinking about putting the sig in the stickers. Sometimes that would work, but I was thinking making a sticker for the theme. For instance, if the theme was Blue maybe just a blue sticker.

Ok so those are my ideas, back to you Bass and any one else who wants to input. Oh and yes I would like to be one of the judges, I enjoy giving out fun themes as much as doing the actual creating.

Thanks for the input. :)

What are you thinking for weekly topics?

Anything that's fun, really. For instance, as mentioned above, Blue could be a topic, which gives great freedom, but something like Fruit would not be a topic.

Sounds like a great idea! Once you guys have the final details ironed out, PM me a mock-up of the official thread so I can review and revise (doesn't sound like much revision will be necessary, though). Once I give it the old Stamp of Approval, we'll be good to go.

So this is a barebones preview of what we have so far. Further discussion is greatly encouraged.

- Rotating panel of judges, so that all may participate.

- One judge per week, the judge of the week picks the topic but the judge of the next week actually judges the sigs.

- Judge will be the host.

- Judges may always participate, however if it is the week prior to their judging week(the week they pick the winner), then their sig will not be considered.

- You can submit as many sigs as you'd like.

- All sigs must comply with the topic of the SotW.

- First place wins 150 experience, as well as (still just maybe) an exclusive sticker.

Awesome Bass! We have half got it! If you dont mind, I would like a pretty important part in running/maintaining/judging this because it was you and me who suggested this in the other thread. I really don't want to sound selfish here, thats not my intention at all. Thanks for getting this going though! I was actually setting out how it was going to work myself just this morning lol. I was going to PM cartman but whatever, I guess I can post it here.

~Basically, I was thinking we could either have one thread of multiple ones as weeks go on. (Multiple would be better)

~I think we would name it SotW #1 Applications / SotW #1, and obviously change the number as weeks go on. The applications one will be if we do public voting.

~If we choose public voting, we would then edit the name of the thread to say: SotW #1 Voting

~Heres the thing, we could either do a public voting period or have a judge vote. I dont really want it to be a poll if we do public voting period though. I have explained the system on the bottom of the post.

~ If this idea takes off and it is successful enough, we could have a hall of fame for SotW (Much like the one on Wiichat) named SotW Hall of Fame. I will keep a record of the winner each week just in case.

~ We would set out the weekly post this way:

================================================== =======

Rules:
Only 1 entry per person
Deadline is [Insert Deadline]
- any sigs applied after that will not be entered.
Must be relevant to given topic (if not, it will not be entered).
Must be an original work made within the given week.

The topic for this week is:

[Landscape Manipulation]

Get a photo of a scenic landscape. Enhance the photo anyway you want, and then add your own flare to it. Manipulate it however your heart desires. Only rule is absolutely no human (or anime or other ghastly cartoon lulz) renders stuck on it.

================================================== ======

I took that from Wiichats SotW this week. They do it very well over there (I would know lol). Basically, Those rules will be the same here im thinking, and we will have a topic giver. The topic giver will also give a brief description on the topic. If we dont do public voting, the topic giver will also be the judge.

~ We could also have only one person who starts the SOTW and we could add another section on the post saying
Topic giver:
but I love credit so I dont suggest it ;].

~ We need some advertisement of this thing weather or not we are doing public voting. We need the word out (Ill put it in my sig with a lot of colours lol) and more people dipping into the graphic design pool. I don't think the mods have anything in their power that they can do that isnt kind of spamming lol.

~ We could get creative with the ideas for the week. We could maybe have a template that all users must use if they wish to enter like a pre set size, border or image.

~My only worry for this is not having enough people. If this doesnt work out (HOPE NOT) we can just do GotW, which is Graphic of the Week. We would use all of the same rules and badically everything is the same except that we are not confining our competition to Sigs only. We can do avvies and stickers and many other things in that one.

This is used on many forums.
Heres how it would work:
Voters would decide what signatures they like the most in order of 1 - 3. This is how it would go:

I vote for
1: BassDeluxe
2: KAPBAM
3: LittleBigMe

~ Number 1 would get 3 points, 2 would get 2 points and 3 would get 1 point. At the end, we would tally the points and see who the winner is.

Ok! That wraps it up. Epically long post and it doesnt even have a scrap of spam on it. Kinda proud really :3.

That all sounds great, I think we're just about ready to begin. The way I see it right now, why don't you and I start out as the first 2 judges and each take a week. If anyone else wants to be a judge, then they can ask you or I and we can decide between us whether to give said person a week to judge and then possibly make them permanent in the rotation as long as everything works out! Kind of like how this forum is run and any new permanent judges would have as much of a say as us (I'd say a maximum of 4 at any given time though).

- Judges may always participate, however if it is the week prior to their judging week(the week they pick the winner), then their sig will not be considered.

Yep that's what I meant (but had a hard time wording it right :p)

- First place wins 150 experience, as well as (still just maybe) an exclusive sticker.

I'm not keen on the stickers, no other contest does this, and personally, I don't want any new stickers and I'm sure others wouldn't want it either. I carefully chose the 2 stickers I added after the trophies so it would look the way I wanted and even though I am a HUGE Devil May Cry fan, I will never add the DMC sticker from the store because of this :p I think if you really want to make stickers (and I think it's a great idea) why not take it upon yourself to make a sticker each week for the current theme and send them to Cartman (maybe every 4 weeks) so he can add them to the store?

Ok so let me paste and copy what you had and add and delete where I think it's needed (obviously still open to changes if necessary):

- Rotating panel of judges, so that all may participate.

- First 3 permanent judges are BassDeluxe, LittleBigMe and KAPBAM. The contest is theirs to host and make decisions until other judges become part of the mix as well.

- One judge per week, the judge of the week picks the topic but the judge of the next week actually judges the sigs.

- Judges may always participate, however if it is the week prior to their judging week(the week they pick the winner), then their sig will not be considered.

- You can submit as many sigs as you'd like.

- All sigs must comply with the topic of the SotW and must be in a sig format, so short in height and long in width.

- First place wins 150 experience.

EDIT: LBM, I just noticed you posted while I was writing, I'm reading it now :)

EDIT2: Holy! I thought my post was long!!

Ok I won't try and quote you cause I would have to do too much copy pasting xD But here's what I think:

- Voting should be as Bass and I mentioned, by judges only and I think you mentioned this as a possibility too. Public voting will never work, WAY too much compiling to do and it might just kill the contest.

- You (LBM) being a judge/host. Hell yea! I was wondering why you hadn't replied to this thread yet :)

- One thread is definitely best. Look at the Captions contest, works great, and we can have it cleaned up every week like it does. Also taking from the Captions contest, a special gallery section would be very efficient and an easy way for anyone looking for sigs to find them.

- I also think naming it each week according to which round and what theme would be a great idea. So exactly like you wrote, example: SotW #1 Water

- As for everything under where you wrote Rules: As it is now, we have what Bass and I worked at coming up with and what you came up with on your own. I would really like it if you looked at what Bass and I layed out and brought your thoughts/comments/modifications to that rather than setting up a whole new set of rules because that's just taking a step back and making our efforts pointless. Notice how I said we were just about ready to get started at the beginning of the post, well not if we start from scratch... Why not just read the things we had come up with above (in blue) and evolve that where you see a need? I think we had a good thing going and I was hoping you were going to build on that, like I did with Bass's initial suggestion.

EDIT: LBM, I just noticed you posted while I was writing, I'm reading it now :)

I like those points, though I would like to be part of the host and judge lists. Sorry I was so slow to react to this thread, I only just saw and made that post. The idea on as many posts as you like is a little iffy to me, but thats my opinion. I think we could have sort of a 2 sig limit or something? To make it even more fair those 2 sigs can be editable even after they have been submitted but only if it isn't edited too drastically. You can only edit before deadline. I think edits should be a request thing, and we will either accept the edit or not. If they spent a lot of time on it to have us reject it, its basically tough luck because obviously they edited it too much. :3.

Also, care to post on my points KAPBAM? I want some feedback on the plz :).

Edit
Sure KAP, no problem. Sorry if I sounded insensitive, I was in a rush to get a post in. What I posted were ideas, not an actual system to be used. I wanted them to be thought about to maybe be implemented into your ideas. I will now post what I think would be a good set of rules but feel free to object to any of them.
- Rotating panel of judges, so that all may participate.

Just wondering on what you and Bass think the post should look like? I havn't seen a suggestion but I am like blind lol.

- For experience, I think we should start with a single prize each week. Sig of the week you know! Lol, seriously though the reason I think this is because we don't know how many people will participate, and to make it easy to gain steam, only having to pick one winner will be alot easier on the judges. Heck yes. >_<

And to keep things simple:
A public voting system shouldn't be involved because it'll mean that we'll have to wait another few days before the next round can start.

I'm all up for this, and I much rather this over the other competition since I can participate if I want without any repercussions. =3
Lulz for laziness.

I do agree with the rotating judges since this will get a greater number of people involved and feel more like it's a community based competition.

As for the rest... meh, can't be bothered to type out that I agree with everything. xD

LittleBigMe
01-14-2009, 03:00 PM
Great! I think we have now decided that it wont be a community voting system.

P.S. I think this is the longest page in LBPC that isnt spam o_O.

KAPBAM

As for the rest... meh, can't be bothered to type out that I agree with everything. xD

Lol, you lazy bum. Thanks for your imput and I will look forward to seeing your entries Mr Death ;D

----

Ok so I think we're trully almost ready to go now :D

I still have only one issue and since we are now 3 we can have Bass be the deciding factor. I don't think there should be a limit to how many sigs can be entered. Now there should be a major difference between entries though (not one with a white dot, one without type of thing). So to make it clear I will add my version of the rule below and Bass can suggest an alternative or support one as is (and to be clear, I'm fine with either, I just have a different opinion on the specifics but will support whichever gets 2/3 votes :p). Oh and the reason I don't want a limit, is that less restrictions is more inviting to people, and the more sigs, the more others will want to enter and the more alive this competition will seem!

LBM: - You can submit a limit of 2 (Citation Needed) signatures per round, with those signatures being editable as long as the edit arent too drastic.

KAP: - You can submit as many sigs as you like per round, but you may not enter different versions of a sig.

- All sigs must comply with the topic of the SotW and must be in a sig format, so short in height and long in width.

- First place wins 150 experience.

Now my version of that rule and yours would both allow for edits if we can do the Gallery thing like the Caption contest. Only entries in the Gallery in the correct section will be judged and they will be judged on a set day so people know to get their sigs in before that day. This will make judging easy, just go in the gallery in say Round #1 and check all the entries. Any people submitting 2 or more entries that are too identical (refering to my version of the rule) would be automatically disqualified.

Ok as for what it would actually look like, here's my take, and I'm basing myself on what you started LBM:

--------------

Welcome to the Sig of the Week Contest!

The topic for this week is:

[Landscape Manipulation] [make the title link to the correct section of the gallery]

In details: [This part will be up to the judge: give as much (not too much) or as little extra details/rules as you like]

Get a photo of a scenic landscape. Enhance the photo anyway you want, and then add your own flare to it. Manipulate it however your heart desires. Only rule is absolutely no human (or anime or other ghastly cartoon lulz) renders stuck on it.

Rules:

LBM: - You can submit a limit of 2 (Citation Needed) signatures per round, with those signatures being editable as long as the edit arent too drastic.

KAP: - You can submit as many sigs as you like per round, but you may not enter different [I]versions of a sig.

- All sigs must comply with the topic of the SotW and must be in a sig format, so short in height and long in width.

- Your sig must be an original work made within the given week.

- First place wins 150 experience
You must upload to the correct section of the gallery: [Insert Link]

Deadline for round #X is Friday [Insert Date] - Judging Day!

Now I think about it Kap, your idea is actually alot better. I shouldnt be placing any sort of limits on a growing idea! Though I do have one thing I would like to talk about. I think the deadline should be on monday. This gives the competitors time to make their sigs if we release the new comp on tuesday. A lot more sigs will be made on the weekend than on the weekdays. Doesnt differ much, just gives people time to make their sigs later on in the week and not too early when they haven't got many ideas. Basically, this is what it is:

- Rotating panel of judges, so that all may participate.

- First 3 permanent judges are BassDeluxe, LittleBigMe and KAPBAM. The contest is theirs to host and make decisions until other judges become part of the mix as well.

- One judge per week, the judge of the week picks the topic but the judge of the next week actually judges the sigs.

- Judges may always participate, however if it is the week prior to their judging week(the week they pick the winner), then their sig will not be considered.

- You can submit as many sigs as you like per round, but you may not enter different versions of a sig.

- All sigs must comply with the topic of the SotW and must be in a sig format, so short in height and long in width.

- First place wins 150 experience.

With the rules like this:

-------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the Sig of the Week Contest!

I want in now?
i assume it isnt like the other comps, where you HAVE to do one each week? so like, one week i could enter, the next week i might be away or whatever, so i just dont do one, or is it like round 1, round 2 etc.

Its exactly like you said. Its not lock in at all.

BassDeluxe
01-14-2009, 04:40 PM
Time for me to weight in, then. Personally, I'm for no limits on amount of sigs, but for a different reason. Not only is that less restrictive, but I could very easily see people holding off on entering their sigs until the last day just so other people can't see them beforehand, and so they can be sure they're satisfied. If we didn't limit the amount, though, they would have no problem entering them when they're done because they're free to make changes and enter more if they want. You see what I'm saying?

Also, I'm a bit confused as to how the posts would work. Are you saying a new thread each week titled SotW #_ *Theme*? I think that'd be good, but I think a sticky for an archive would also be good. If we are doing it like the Captions Contest, the biggest problem I notice is the inability for the next judge to edit the post when his turn comes. Also, if we do it like the Captions Contest, we'll still need an archive.

So, with the rules being basically done, we just need to draw up the post. I can't do that right now so I'll leave it to you guys until I come home from school.

Ok so Bass and LBM I've sent you a PM with some info about what I've done with the official thread I just started. The way I set it up, we won't have to ever worry about changing the first post, and we'll be able to easily keep the thread clean.

As for posting the winner, I think the best way would be to post his name and the actual picture in the same post where you announce the next theme and put it BEFORE all the info for the next week's theme.

Example:
-----------------------------------------------------

Last week's winner:

BassDeluxe! Congratulations :)

The topic for this week is:

[Landscape Manipulation] (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/littlebiggallery/index.php?c=12)

In details:

Get a photo of a scenic landscape. Enhance the photo anyway you want, and then add your[...]

-----------------------------------------

How's that? I was thinking LBM could go first, if you want to use this as the first theme (Landscape Manipulation, unless you didn't want to do that) and I'd like to go second if that's ok with you Bass, then it would be your turn and we just keep the rotation going.

Now that that's out of the way xD I just wanted to link to the gallery temporarily and Captions round 1 was empty so I chose round 2 :p I'll change the links to the SotW gallery once it's open ;)

Oh and Bass & LBM, I keep forgetting to mention. With my post remaining at the top each week, I can go in and change the title as the themes are submitted by the weekly judge. If it's me I'll do it automatically, if it's either one of you, just PM me once you've posted the winner and next theme and I'll enter the correct information!

Also I noticed you wrote Monday as the day you wanted to do the judging. We need to chose a single day for all 3 judges, as this will not only cause confusion if we chose different days, but give less or more time each week depending on who the next and previous judges were.

I'm good with either Monday or Friday and either one gives you a full weekend to work on your sig. If it's a Friday participants can start working on their sigs immediately the next day and if it's a Monday, they have the weekend at the end of the period to complete their work. Works either way! So if you can only do it on a Monday because of whatever constraints, I'm good with that! (Bass how about you? Any preference/reason for Monday or Friday?)

I think Friday would be better personally. You know, so people have a reason to get started early rather than later.

Also, I think it's good to put last week's winner in the first post, but how will you be able to see further back than that? That's why I was thinking about an archive. =/

Oh, before I forget - let this moment go down in history. The moment I won SotW #0. :D

I'll join in too when you guys get it all ironed out.

Personally I would prefer Monday because I like to think of my ideas during the week and make them over the weekend, but w/e you do is fine by me.

Yeah...I like the Monday start idea as well...same reasons as you stated.

Great! Thats why I suggested it. Anyway, Kapbam, what your saying is you will use THIS thread, and just edit the title and front page post every week? Dang hess Offline. Bass?

No, he's going to use the Sig of the Week mock thread. Are we ready to get started then?

I guess so. Is he the first judge?

How's that? I was thinking LBM could go first, if you want to use this as the first theme (Landscape Manipulation, unless you didn't want to do that) and I'd like to go second if that's ok with you Bass, then it would be your turn and we just keep the rotation going.

You are....

Sweet. Well, when he unlock it we will get underway on monday. I think the topic will stay as landscape manipulation.

Ok so let me respond to a few things starting with above quote:

First: Congratulations on winning week 0!! :hero::D:p:arg: lol

Ok that's my joke for now xD I have a friend coming over so I have to make this as brief as possible. I'll get more work done on the official (currently moch) thread this evening/tomorrow morning at the latest.

So for archives, we now have the Signature Contest Gallery! Curtosy of Cartman! Thanks CC! So we'll be able to see all past sigs there, per round. Go ahead and have a look! link (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/littlebiggallery/index.php?c=47)

We could also have a drop down list (spoiler tags) of all the winners in the very first post, which will then contain only the Welcome phrase and that list. The second post will then contain all the info about the theme of the week and last weeks winner, as I sent you guys in PMs. The reason I left the rules in the second post is just because of the structure of the info and also to keep the first post as unchanging as possible.

So basically soon as I get the time I will work with LBM on the thread structure for the first week and we will get it started on Monday. I like monday too now after thinking it through, like I said, Monday and Friday are the best solutions but Monday seems to be popular and for valid reasons so I guess Monday it is! If it becomes a problem for whatever reason we can always readjust and make it Friday.

So have a look at the gallery, and I'll be back later to finish things up and prepare everything with you guys!

I have asked him now, but hes offline. I will have an answer for you when he gets on. I dont at all think it will be compulsery though. I suggested that you may upload it to the THREAD (Not gallery) if you think it will make your sig look more impressive.

I agree, it will not be compulsory, but you can write whatever you like, post whatever images you like in the actuall thread, just upload only the sigs in the gallery :)

I see some people already went ahead and uploaded some sigs to the gallery for round one, and although it isn't officially started yet, they will be accepted as LBM has decided to leave the first week's theme as is. Looks good and if you want to get started already, just have a look at the moch thread to see the guidlines. Contest will officially start on Monday :hero:

Have a look at the "moch" thread in this same section (contests). All the info is there, it will not change :)

Hey,

Sig is short for signature yes. It is a picture that you would normally put under your replies on the forum. It is usually pretty small, see the pic that is under my reply and the one under TheArmedReaper's reply above me. For the contest you are required to make a signature as per the theme of the week, so not necessarily a sig that you personnally would use :)

Hope that explains it well enough.

EDIT: Ok I'm going to go ahead and lock this thread, there is no more need for it as the official thread will be open soon as LBM has a minute :) Look forward to seeing lots of you participating! Any further questions can be posted and the official thread, and although you'll have to upload to the gallery for the judging, go ahead and post your sigs in the thread as well so we can all see what you've done!
