Okay, I'm new here, and would like to get some feedback for my level:

The Forgotten Relics of the Sack

PSN:dkjestrup

I'd reccomend searching my PSN. Now I will give feedback in return, but this is how I'd like to do it:

the maximum amount in the queue is 3 at a time. So if there are three people in line, don't post untill I'm finished with at least one of them. I will only be doing this for a couple of days, so be quick! I will post when the thread is finished.

Hey I will take you up on that. If you want to reciprocate search for Metal Gear Mechanical Bull or my psn: mrjoeyman. Its just a radical fun level that you can learn to complete by running through it several times to the end. Got a great original prize you can win for no lives lost, inspired by the great tank builder here Kratos4. I will check your level out asap.

mrjoeyman :)

You write some word on my "The Quest of the great pyramid" to promote your level.
We have a common theme and it is a good thing. I played your level, i send you a MP with my comments and suggests (i didn't see the thread) ;)

Please, take a look to my level and write a few words on its thread ;)

I played through your level several times and my first thought was "I thought this guy said he was new to this?". It didnt look like most novice levels I have seen. It started off pretty dark in there so I will tell you right off the bat that I dont particularly care for dark levels. Yours however only had a few spots that I thought should have been a little better lit, so that wasnt so bad. I like the point opportunity to the left after first entry. I will try not to give it all away but the "way you pray" to get points and or level reaction is really cool in my book, you will have to teach me that one. Next I know we need the magic mouth to convey information to the player so you get an A for information conveyance. I think it would add to the experience if there was a way to use a little fewer of them so the storyline flows for the player a little smoother, but its nice to be informed as you get further into the story. The "earthquakes" are awesome, teach me that too. :) The puzzle is a great inclusion. I got lucky and got it right the first time but I just guessed. If there were a clue or clues somewhere (maybe there were but I just missed it) that tipped the player as to how or what order they should be inserted, that would be awesome. They could be put in a place or places that are at first inconspicuous but opon closer observation, noticable. Also I could see your switch on the left side of the top of the screen when I flew up to pick up one of the puzzle pieces. You might want to cover it up or move it to a place where you cant see it. After you get the wall up consider adding "something" in the little space after. You walk through there and another wall goes up and you fall in to the moving vertical spike layers. Cool man. I love that its tricky to manuver to the top. Gave me a good idea for another level on that one. Once you make it to the top and get through the hanging lobsters you get to a spot where it makes the player think, "which way should I go?" I love it. Now the player has to play your level again to try the path that he chose not to use. Keep em coming back. They all give you more points and end up in the little basement and you pray once more and get points and see the "RIP" sign and the "I loved her" signs? I didnt understand that part of the story but its probably because I sit around staring at the walls and drool alot. :p Seriously I really enjoyed your level, and even more so after I played through it about 4 to 5 times. I gather you are working on it so I wont include any comments about it being too short. Probably the biggest disappointment for me was when I dropped down to the ending scoreboard and got killed by some poison gas. I was like "What? Oh man give me a break." :p Maybe that is the response you wanted? You earned three stars from me, but I wish it would let me give three and 1/2, and I look forward to seeing any updates. Oh yeah, consider using a randomizer for your emitted obstacles that are in your level to make it a little more challenging to make the jumps across the various crags in there. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the feedback! I will get around to playing your levels! Please don't report me if I'm too slow (lol). And yes, I am new at little big planet. I have played around in the creator and I understand it aswell as most. I've made other crap levels on my moon to practice, but this was my first proper!

Lightning/earthquake was done like this:

When you get there a sensor switch dissolves material, which an inverted mag switch uses to move a piston with a key on it. This goes past various mag switches to make the sound, lightning and the camera shake. The camera was done by putting in out of the players view, attatched to a wobble bolt, for shaking.

Praying was very similar, but required a longer wait time. For the puzzle, i will change it, but only after I've edited the puzzle pieces. Might add a hint system using a grab switch and the talking tool.

EDIT: the RIP signs, with I loved her... Are supposed to add depth. If you listen carefully, running from right to left, you can here a girl screaming, followed by a gunshot, and RIP.

Sure try em all but in particular the Metal Gear Mechanical Bull. The other is a work in progress and one is a paintball level that requires 2-4 players. Oh yeah and if you want check out my LBPCentral Final four level to see Kratos4's tank that I painted for a contest. Its still there if you want to see it. I won.

I was asking what areas in Your level that you wanted extra help on (if any)

Btw, I meant a PS3 system update, it's 2.6 or something! An update will be coming, just a bit slower, as I'm laying the ground work for the first, "Good" LoZ:OoT stage! lol, most of the others are pathetic! Haven't found a good OoT level yet! the only good Zelda level is "The Legend Of Sackda" By DimGradation, Boldrin on Gamefaqs.

This is good, I like the prayer mechanic... But visuals, in terms of object design and such, need some improvement. At least you have lighting effects down pretty well. Overall, this is decent, but it obviously needs to be expanded, preferably with much more challenging platforming segments.

I know, the beggining is supposed to be more puzzling than the ending. I have still got enough room to double the level, all in due time! :hero:

Hey Dkjestrup,

Your level is great fun to play, I loved the lightning strike. Great use of game mechanics to make an enjoyable experience. I had no problems with the puzzle, thought there was only 1 way to do it.

Con:
-I'm pretty sure the name of the level is the FORGOTTEN relics of the ancient sack, might want to edit the name to make it easier for LBP Central users find it.
-Only complaint is the level is too short, I had to heart it and you so I can play the next level you make.

Keep up the good work.

Yeah, I realise it's too short, and as we speak I'm working on an update to the level, where I'm adding a fire/jetpack maze, emmiting platforms and creating a dissolving bridge. I'm pleased you liked it. I will probably create a bolder-chase scene, some more levels where you are stuck (like the spike room) and hopefully, a chariot ride, inspired by Taita's spoked wheel in Wilbur Smith's "River God". Any suggestions on how to improve it are welcome.

Other things I will do in the future, but not now, will be redoing the jigsaw puzzle pieces, so they are easier to see, editing the prayer to enter the temple, adding a hint system, where you grab them speech bubbles show. Eventually I will edit the dialogue using Maraz Matari's Talking Tool.

Well, here goes:

I thought the mechanics of the bull were fun, especially on the more bumpy terrain.

Suggestions: There needs to be a checkpoint on top of the bull, so that when you die you are not screwed. Either than, or emit the bulls.

I do not think it constitutes a stand alone level, tbh. This would be awesome as a side part of a big level, like for a chase scene etc. I personally am of the opinion that it is ugly, the bull that is. Also, maybe have bombs or something raining down, to add to the atmosphere.

I also noticed that you can avoid all the obstacles by running in the back plane!

Great thanks!

Ok running in the back plane is why the checkpoint isnt needed on the bull. Because of the sensor setup on the bull, sackboy can use the back plane to "place" the bull and re-mount it. Just running in the back plane to get through the level is pointless if one wants to have fun and have a challenge getting there. And very few times will one have to start over. (at least after you ride a few times through and get the hang of remounting and riding over the obstacles). And sometimes it can be a rough ride (which is so **** fun) and you can throw a track, but not many times in my experimentation.

I would love to make this part of a bigger level but the thermometer is too full. If you know anything about tank tracks, they have a mind of their own and that is the debris the bull rides over. They take up a lot of room on the thermometer. They move and stress, and fly apart (did you notice all the stuff flying around?) which is why it is so fun to ride through them. I had to build and place them, in pause mode. I even had to save every time in pause mode to stop them from advancing while I was building. Tank tracks on wheels move by themselves very vigorously unless they are connected to a motor. Because of all of this, this is a "level" where you just make it to the end, and have fun doing it which is why I made it. The raining down of bombs is a great idea and I think there might be enough room to include at least something like that.

Also the bull is a gift of the level for no lives lost and can be repainted or added to to make a sure enough tank or anything else for someone who doesnt want to, or know how to put one together.

And you think the bull is ugly huh? :hero:

Maybe a little makeup will suffice. I know where to get a fetching paint job. :p

I hope you or anyone else who reads this will take several rides and see how fun it can be to make it to the end in one ride. I can do it most every time now.

But..........because of your time and effort to review my level I will attempt to:

1. add raining bombs or the equivelent
2. try to make the bull "prettier" :)
3. try out different debris so I can save room to make it a "level" with more of a theme. ( I would do this in a sequel to this level, because I think this one is fun )

And if anyone tries it out due to this review, I hope to get more suggestions for improvements.

I really thank you for the tips!!

.Perhaps we can call it a large mini game?

Yeah, I thought there might be too much thermo, but a simple theme, and a story, would have been nice. btw, don't get too carried away with bombs! The main reason to have a checkpoint on the bull, is that I cant stand walking the entire level to catch up with it! :p

Ha! I found that out today. I got a new paint job for ugly, and worked on the raining bombs but found out that might not be the way to go :) But I did add a training level where you can hold on to the bull to learn the riding skill. Give it a whirl if you feel the urge.

Oh yeah and as for walking to catch up with the bull, you dont have to do that. Play again and you will understand. Its a timed event now too.

Kinda hard to make a what is supposed to be a war torn battlefield look better :p It is a metal gear like theme. As for random, its random each time since the tracks do different things every time. I did change a good deal of stuff per your review. Im going to experiment with the spawn point on the bull or there abouts, when I get the next chance.

I actually cant wait to play your level again, but it will have to be in the morning when I get home. Im on nights tonight writing from work. I will do it first thing in the morning and report back. I have one more review to do also tomorrow.

Thanks for your comments, so far only you and Takelow have given me any, though I think OCK is going to...

What I meant about the looks was to make the rubble etc more realistic, like rocks>two wheels attatched by a plank of wood in the middle of a warzone :p Have you republished your level? if so I'll play it

I am playing this now, will comment as I play:

The lighting is nice. You are working with an story that uses Egyptian gods and we are clearly not in Egypt so that has me scratching my head, maybe the mystery will be revealed later.

The screen shaking at the prayer place is a nice touch.

Puzzle was fun, I like the embedding with the blue Aztec stone, it really stands out. The spike puzzle was different, I am not a big fan of using stickers for lettering though.

The RIP pop-up really does not fit the look and overall atmosphere of the level.

I like the optional areas that give the player point-bubbles, adds a bit of replay value.

Uh-oh. Dissolved the river and fell down onto this massive platform of dark matter. I walked to the right of that and hit the bottom of the map with no way to reach the scoreboard. No choice but to suicide.

Reached the scoreboard, here are some suggestions:

Suggestions

- One of the most important things when creating a level is to choose a theme/story and stick with it. You need to make sure that every material and object you place in your level makes sense. The player should never say "that does not belong here". Egyptian gods deserve and Egyptian theme. Remove some of the stickers I mentioned as well as some unnecessary sound effects (baby crying) that do not fit the theme or are not explained.

- Color your checkpoints and make them double-life. The level is not too hard but the part with the disappearing platforms was a bit tricky (maybe lower the first platform) and the last thing you want is for the player to lose all their lives, get frustrated and give your level a low rating.

- The level was very short and I am sure you could expand on it. However, I think like for all of us creators the first level is a great learning experience and I think you can now take what you learned and get started on something which will ultimately prove to be "better".

- Decorate the scoreboard and create a wall making it impossible for the player to fall to the right and thus access the bottom of the level like I did.

- Custom content please. This is more of a personal thing but I feel that using story mode objects really doesn't help a level stand out. By taking the time to make everything from scratch you are guaranteeing the player will be seeing something new and you will really make the level your own. This applies to your lettering as well.

Overall this was a good effort for a first level and I look forward to your next creation.

Yeah I see your point. I will work on that too. But then again Kratos4 has an ice slide in the desert on his tank level. :p

And yes I have published the level with some changes. I will publish tomorrow too I am sure with some more, so you might want to wait, or just try to beat my high score until then :p

Look for another review tonight on your updated level...

OCK, about the level ending, I just made it really quick, because I haven't quite finished. If you decide to walk off the dark matter it's your problem :p

Well I noticed a few good changes such as a little different lighting, color on the stairs. I couldnt see the switch in the background which is good and I like the glass at the beginning. I gotta tell you I really dont like the way you can just fall right into the poison gas after you cross the wobble bridge, but someone else might. It was the only irritating thing in the level. But I love the new additions, in particular the way you get to the scoreboard. I had to look around after I got rid of the water to figure out what to do. I finally just jumped into the hole and there it was. :)

I thought I read where you were going to do some changes on the puzzle so I wont comment on that again.

I like the extra bubbles and the rain drops but I would get rid of the rip sign and the baby sound like OCK said. I thought the theme otherwise was adhered to pretty well. Theme though to me isnt as important as most feel it is. I agree too that you should tidy up spots where you can fall into non-level areas.

The spikes layer seems to have been tweaked a little and it is even more tricky. I like how you removed the blue material, but it was just the right amount of tricky the first time. (if you even changed it).

Your level is surely getting better. Anyone seeing this review should definitely go and play! Cant wait to play the next update.

I've changed the level, dramatically! It now looks like it is in Africa, and the puzzle is changed. I've added a hint system, so if you play through you should try it out, I takes advantage of the trick that fire looks like the base material when viewed through glass, so you can see the stickers. Also, it doesn't work when the pieces are in the hole, as they also take up the front layer :(

I think, thanks to OCK, the level went up in quality about 30%!

Please play it again now!

Well, basically, that was the sort of terrirotory I saw your level in, either that, or you could have made it a part of a level (or maybe have a series and that is the "Get Away" level, where you have to use untamed alien technologies. :hero: lol

Anyway, to make it a survival challenge, put the bull on a conveyor belt with obstacles, so it stays put, while moving (have you got me? emit the obstacles, but use a conveyer so you stay put! That was quite an idea if I may say so myself!

Ok i just played your level and heres what i thought:

Pros: -Great detail, excellent use of other materials besidse the basic ones
- Awesome idea with the shaking screen, you gotta tell me how you did that =P.
- Good use of adding secrets, finding all the pray alters added an extra challenge to it.

Cons: -That bridge in the beginning...is annoying. You need to make the gas higher up, because if you jump too high on the bridge trying to cross each of the platforms your sackboy automatically jumps into the third layer and lands on the gas. It found tedious to try and cross that bridge.
-The spiked wall trap has no sense of direction it took a death or two to figure out that i had to go straight up as opposed to the right. A simple arrow sticker in the background will easily fix that small problem.

You posted on my thread you wanted me to check out your level, how bout some Feedback in return, eh?

Just finished your level. I almost gave up at the first because I had no idea how to get past the red button which killed me every time I jumped on it...but then I tried once more and saw the blocks overhead with the letters on them.

I had no idea what needed to be done with the blocks, but figured they needed to spell a certain word (don't want to give any hints here hehe). After that, I died a few more times trying to get past the moving platforms. I had no idea I needed to go higher instead of behind them, so I died there in the black gas.

After that, it wasn't so hard, but there was no way I was able to get to the prize bubbles in the small of the fire walls, so I passed that by.

I loved the glass tears which went to the 'fish god.'

Alot of nice trigger work here, but very frustrating in parts.

Pros:
1. Nice level design and great lighting.
2. Very good trigger work and mechanics.
3. Beautiful glass tears.
4. Nice ambience with the music.

Cons:
1. Camera work is real tough, especially with the bridge at the start and the lightning bolt. Died alot at the end of bridge by falling into the pit there.
2. Even though there is alot of direction on what to do, I still was lost with the first block puzzle. I grabbed the part that said 'grab here for a hint' but I didn't see or understand anything other than something I grabbed.
3. The fire maze is real hard. Need to adjust the smaller part going to the large bubble collection. I couldn't get there at all.
4. The disappearing lifts go way too fast. And the camera angle there makes it very difficult to make it.
5. Very short level.

I gave it 2 out of 5 stars and a 'frustrating' tag.

Thanks for the feedback. I changed the hint so it is more noticeable, I suppose there is more to be done. When I'm satisfied with it I'll finish off the level, adding an underwater maze, a boss fight (fingers crossed) and a getaway sequence.

Stay tuned! :)

And I know about the maze -.- Will do, although it is possible...

Hey Dk, just had the opportunity to try your level. I like it! Most of my feelings have already been made by other comments, but I'll add that I really enjoyed the "praying" to the God segment at the beginning as well as the puzzles throughout.

Glad to here that you have more plans for it, because I'll admit, I was a bit disappointed when I dropped into the water and it ended. So, I look forward to what's next!

Well, I'm planning to add some kind of big under water puzzle (probably spinning to make it even harder, then When you get out of the water I'll add a boss and a chariot getaway! (If the thermo doesn't fill). :hero:

My next level will probably be based around some Maori myths (I'm from New Zealand and the Maori were the natives, but none live like that anymore...) Hopefully including a wave machine, and whales that spout electric water.

If you have an interesting idea for a puzzle, then please present it to me. I'll give you credit! :)

That's pretty cool. We both used very different techniques to achieve the same effect. In my level I held the level up with pistons to create an earthquake. I'll check out your level next time I'm on LBP. :)

Thanks! It was the only thing I could think of, don't think it was my idea though, must've heard something about it in these forums. The shaking was supposed to be from the thunder though!

I will try yours!

EDIT: Just watched the video, looks awesome. I like your earthquakes, it is definately something different to most levels. I will play (After I've finished Aceing the ****ing islands.... ****) And will review. Wana do F4F?

That level was around November and pretty dead, but I will give some constructive feedback on your level anyway. ;)

May not be until tomorrow though.

Sorry about the delay, you left feedback on my Siberia With Love level a while ago but I've been finishing up my new level. I've just played your level. Here are my thoughts...

+ The lighting looks good at the start
+ I like the praying sections, well thoughtout.
+ The puzzle's are good, logical, and nice to work through.

- You use a lot of materials and objects, it looks a little cluttered to me
- I've now died twice and to restart on the spiked platforms after the puzzle, the way is not clear. Do I jump up onto the platform, or walk underneath? Its dark and the camera angle is close. I got there on the third playthrough.
- The scorpions are from MM
- I had the same problem as everyone else with the bridge. You fall off it way to often, if this is the intention then use platforms and not something players will look at as safe, i.e. a bridge.

It was'nt a bad level, some parts where nicely done, although like I said the level looks a little cluttered with all the coloured lighting, and all the different materials. I also expected it to be longer.

*** and "tricky" tag left in game

I would agree with all of what you have said.

I want to change the scorpions, but the glass in front of them is making it nearly impossible: the hole level collapses when I delete it. I will definately try to work around this.

I know about the spikes :( I will redo that area when I'm not banned (parents) anymore!

Cluttered, good point. I will try to remedy this, using the material changer, and editing the lights. The colours on the prayer spots are meant to represent the god they represent. I will (similair to your level) show how many you found at the end.

Short? I know, I know. I don't have that much thermo left sadly! I hope to add a boss fight or a chariot section, if I have room. Don't expect much, I only have like 3 blocks left

I am really busting to start a new level however. This one has been a great learning experience, and if I where to do it again, I imagine it would be 10000% better! I have a really good idea that I'm already starting to work on though. I'll PM you when it's done if you want! :)

And the bridge: I've heard of this. What will change this? I've been told to bolt thin layers to thick layers, would this work?

Try going into edit mode and change the glass into dissolve material. Then pop a switch onto it and activate it. I think you may be able to work around the self destruct problem, at least it worked for me in a similar situation.

I am currently updating the spikes part that people have had problems with (this time using the grid!). Now the spikes are gone, and you simply get squished on the wall. There is also a double checkpoint, and I got rid of the MM scorpions. I have not republished it yet however.

DOUBLE EDIT: I will get to the bridge, Gruntos. I am going to find a way of doing it without redoing the lightning section if possible.

I just tried again and had no problems. Just the luck of the draw I suppose!? :p

Finally checked out your level at your request. It's fun to play, I liked the puzzling aspects and the implementation of the clue was subtle yet brilliant. On the negative side I fell off that bridge at the beginning far too often, and a double-life checkpoint before the spiky platforms would be nice as that was quite a tricky obstacle to overcome. I felt the level was a bit short, but that was probably due to the lack of thermo space as a result of the large number of different materials you used. I look forward to your next level and hope it contains more good puzzles.

I KNOW ABOUT THE SPIKE WALL!! I've actually re-done it, with double checkpoints and made it easier in general, but I didn't (stupidly) publish it, and now the Disc reader on my PS3 is broken, and I cannot do anything other than download demos until it gets fixed :(

As for the bridge, I've had reports about this, and will change it at any chance I get.

EDIT: as for my next level, I don't think it will contain as many puzzles, rather more platforming. One thing I've learnt is that puzzles in LBP aren't always good, as 90% of LBP players are outsmarted by a doorknob.

I have my idea for my next level in my head, and it is really good. I hope to make it action fulled and polished. There will be 1-2 puzzles, but most of the level will be platforming, and a boss (PLEASE, PLEASE be enough Thermo Room!!!!!)

Played the level last night and really liked it.

I too thought the prayer parts were an interesting element of the level. I also liked your design for the guide character. The initial puzzle took me a minute to figure out where to put the blocks but the puzzle itself was pretty easy but fun. It had some challenging platforming jumps and the fire maze was a bit tricky but not frustrating. There were a few areas where I wasn't sure where to go next but eventually I figured out where the main track was.

Overall a really interesting level to play 4 stars and a heart from me. Nice work. :)

The mods can lock this topic if they want, I've recieved plenty enough feedback, and have gotten a whole lot better since I made this level. Be on the lookout for "The Legend of Maui" which will be the new level I create when my PS3 gets back from repairs.

Thanks a lot everyone who posted here!
