Concept: Mix a full-blown arcade feel with a sci-fi adventure

Features: 5 exciting arcade segments, a cow mini-game, a great story, and some memorable moments.

Okay, I got GREAT response from Splat Invaders Deluxe, but several authors wanted to see me expand the idea. I finally finished, and I definately think this game is a blast!

This game features several cool innovations, including a large shield protecting a nuclear core - in which each layer spins in a different direction.

If you are a fan of classic arcade games, you will LOVE this one.

Have fun! Let me know what you think.

(by the way, for the first 80 plays this game kept a 5 star rating - so it is definately worth your quarters!)

Give credit where credit is due: JonMartin had the idea for the part of having the floor rise so aliens are coming down on you. Aer0blue is the one who asked me to make the level bigger (from the original Splat Invaders Deluxe) and asked for a secret area containing cows.

Wow. Can I close and frame the topic now?

Of note, I did TRY to make it go on forever, but the thermo got the best of me (I think that big spinning wheel took about 30% away).

Only if you tell me what exactly I am supposed to do in the, hehe, Bovine anti-gravity area?
I'm not understanding what I should do with the sandwich : /

Edit: Such a portal feeling at the end there ^^ I loves it

This level is GREAT!
I had the chance to playtest it (Thank you Ccubbage for this privilege) and it is a treasure coming from 1980's!!!.
Please, try it, and don't worry if at the end of the level you see on the screen something as "INSERT COINS"...

For the one that have already played the previous verions of the level (the Deluxe, am i wrong?), forgot what you have seen: The level could initially seem very close to the previous verion (Seems, because in reality, there was a lot of improvements), but the new part of the level is an incredible firework!

I will write some more detailed feedbacks and suggests in a couple of days ;)

Morrin:

The "Bovine Gravity Chamber" is just a mini game. You were playing it correctly, but just need to keep hitting the button, grabbing the cows, and getting the points. There are 8 cows. It's a great way to get extra points.

Another hint: at the end of the game, grab the cow before he flies away.

Takelow:

Thanks for the great review, man! Means a lot coming from the author of "The Bearer"!

So I played Splat Invaders Deluxe a couple of nights ago and thought it was really great, 5 stars and hearted! Then I saw you released this new version and played it last night, here are some thoughts (I will include any suggestions in brackets):

I really have to applaud you for nailing the look and feel of Space Invaders. I remember as a kid in the 80's going to this bowling alley where they had Space Invaders and using up all of my quarters trying to get a high score :) This truly felt like playing an arcade classic, more so then any other mini-game I have played in LBP.

Your material selection is perfect and I really don't think it can be improved upon. It just all makes sense.

I like how you created destroyable cover as it adds some strategy and it should make the player time their shots a bit more. Having said that I still found it easy to just spray a huge stram of paint into the heavens without worrying too much about the cover (maybe lower the HP on these?)

The boss on stage 3 was very cool and unexpected. I am curiuos as to how long it took you to tweak the movement pattern of this thing.

Now this is where things got really interesting. You pretty much added a whole new level that is accessed next to the scoreboard and completely optional! The whole elevator sections was amazing. I especially liked how you had it slanted versus completely horizontal, nice touch.

The spinning celestial background and lighting in the next section added some great visual punch. I also liked the glass walkways here.

I loved the decortaions you created in the following sections, particularly the chais and lights. The cow mini-game was fun although I did not know it was optional and thought it was necessary to do in order to progress (maybe a speech bubble here would help). I also had a bit of difficulty figuring out what to do once all the turrets jumped out and started firing at me. I thought I had to destroy all of them to progress so when one of them shot me I went all the way back to the elevator for a new paintinator (it was not a big deal but perhaps a bit more direction here would help). Once I figured out I need to jump into the small square in the background I said "ahhhh" lol.

The next room was funny. I love the speech bubbles here and the cameo of a well known lady made me smile :)

The spinning boss was well done. I liked your use of color here and the fact that each successive ring was spinning in the opposite direction of the previous one was unique and I have not seen it done before.

The cow being beamed up at the end was too funny. Unfortunately I did not have a chance to grab it :)

Overall this was an incredible experience that everyone needs to check out. 5 stars and hearted! I look forward to your next project.

Interestingly, I used to be a video game designer back in the mid 80's (worked on home versions of Super Cobra and Tron). One of the reasons I selected this game is because of my past experience. Thought it would help me relive some past times (one of the other guys I used to program with back then came up with the picture idea)

I like how you created destroyable cover as it adds some strategy and it should make the player time their shots a bit more. Having said that I still found it easy to just spray a huge stram of paint into the heavens without worrying too much about the cover (maybe lower the HP on these?)

I had been thinking the same thing myself. Glad you mentioned it!

The boss on stage 3 was very cool and unexpected. I am curiuos as to how long it took you to tweak the movement pattern of this thing.

This one took me several hours of slowly tweaking it and watching the results. I also had to make sure that when each section was destroyed, the explosions were enough to appear to damage the ship, but not enough to break it to a point where it couldn't be destroyed. I think it was worth it in the end.

One of the other people reviewing this had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. I apologize... I didn't even think of people missing the air vent (may be why I had "Nerve wracking" as one of the tags on my game, even though people were rating it well....)

I added a speech bubble that zoomed in on the air vent when you walk past the turret area.
(of course, I am glad at least a couple of people got to play the cow mini-game).

The spinning boss was well done. I liked your use of color here and the fact that each successive ring was spinning in the opposite direction of the previous one was unique and I have not seen it done before.

This spinning bubble was the biggest pain in the neck in the game. Took me several hours of having wheel pieces cracking into other parts and breaking the whole thing into pieces... I finished it, though, because I felt people would say "hey, never seen THAT one before". My favorite levels in LBP have those small touches (same thing I thought in "The Legion" where you are suddenly platforming BEHIND the backdrop.)

Hey Cuz,

Super level, I think the most fun I've had on any level, including the story levels made by MM.

Pros:
-I would list all the pros, but there are too many and I don't want to spoil the level with a walk through. I will say that my favorite part was when the simulator breaks, rofl.

Cons:
-The boss on stage 3 would be easier to understand if it had 5 LEDs for the 5 parts you have to destroy that go out when said part is gone. I didn't know there were 2 on left and 2 on right first time and kept dodging the thing looking for a way out...but I am a noob.
-As OCK mentioned the long walk back for the paintball gun at the turrets, I double that comment and add tears of sadness since I had to make the walk 3 times in 2 games (I had to play it again just to grab the last cow)..
-Cow level, I managed to get a cow stuck going up the chute, it was at an angle, feet top right, head bottom left. Did it twice so you might want to expand the up chute just a bit, its sad when the cow is stuck up there and you can reach him :(
-Dying on the cow part made me sad, I was laughing too hard to make all the jumps back to get the next cow, then when I was concentrating I still managed to die alot until I got the hang of the timing. You can almost lose more points then gain them down there.
-Getting in the airvent, had no clue what to do until I read the post, maybe change the mouth from 'hmmm' to 'hmmm, how do I get up in that airvent'

Hope this helps,

CCubbage

Note - while I'm writing this I'm actually laughing pretty hard from your post, but I'm gonna try to go on.

Hey Cuz,

Super level, I think the most fun I've had on any level, including the story levels made by MM.

Great to hear you enjoyed it! I had a BLAST making it. Too many good ideas, not enough thermo to get them all in (had a few more photos for the alien sitting room.... Mork would have been nice to include).

Pros:
-I would list all the pros, but there are too many and I don't want to spoil the level with a walk through. I will say that my favorite part was when the simulator breaks, rofl.

I was hoping someone would comment on this. To future posts, PLEASE don't say it looks cheezy. I wanted the background image to look grainy so you would think "who would actually BUY that trick???"

Cons:
-The boss on stage 3 would be easier to understand if it had 5 LEDs for the 5 parts you have to destroy that go out when said part is gone. I didn't know there were 2 on left and 2 on right first time and kept dodging the thing looking for a way out...but I am a noob.

There are 3 parts: left, middle, and right. On each one after you rinish shooting it an explosion occurs. I was going for a a feeling of "OMG! Won't this thing ever die???" If anyone echoes this sentiment, I will certainly add another visual clue however.

-As OCK mentioned the long walk back for the paintball gun at the turrets, I double that comment and add tears of sadness since I had to make the walk 3 times in 2 games (I had to play it again just to grab the last cow)..

Ok, here's one of those trade-off design issues (I struggled with this some): Getting the cow sticker so you can play the mini-game is not supposed to be COMPLETELY obvious. If I put the gun right outside the room, it will be pretty obvious that you're supposed to shoot the turrets - which is incredibly easy (you can just stand away from the turrets fire and shoot them without any challenge). This was supposed to be a puzzle. I was hoping most people would try to drag the broken turret through the other turret's fire. However, once again - I don't want to be hard-headed so if someone else really feels this is necessary I will definately change it.

-Cow level, I managed to get a cow stuck going up the chute, it was at an angle, feet top right, head bottom left. Did it twice so you might want to expand the up chute just a bit, its sad when the cow is stuck up there and you can reach him :(

OK, all though I'm sorry a cow didn't go through for you, what would happen if you were trying to fit a REAL cow through an opening sideways? You've got to be able to aim the cow properly. I want you to go back and practice aiming the cow!

-Dying on the cow part made me sad, I was laughing too hard to make all the jumps back to get the next cow, then when I was concentrating I still managed to die alot until I got the hang of the timing. You can almost lose more points then gain them down there.

OK, once again with the cow thing: this cow mini-game is carefully engineered to provide maximum satisfaction to those who REALLY work on mastering the perfection of floating-cow-platforming. It takes brains, agility, great timing, and lot's of practice until you truly master true bovinativity. The fact is, cow-floating is an art. So, if you play the game 10 times (giving it a 5-star rating each time), and also practice in different locales (try it at a few friends houses with 5 start ratings and hearts) you should get the hang of it.

(by the way, if you manage to get 30 friends to heart the level the game is designed to self-adjust the cow-floating difficulty level. This is another secret I'm only revealing in this thread)

-Getting in the airvent, had no clue what to do until I read the post, maybe change the mouth from 'hmmm' to 'hmmm, how do I get up in that airvent'

Ok, I'll do this one.

Edit: Ok, I changed the "Hmm..." to "Hmmm. I wonder if I can fit in there?" and made the shields destruct a little easier (per OCK).

had a few more photos for the alien sitting room....

To be honest I was sitting to far away to make out the photos the first time, Alf, Spock, Barf and whats the one on the right?

"OMG! Won't this thing ever die???"

Then consider your job done, I think thats what I was actually thinking.

Ok, here's one of those trade-off design issues (I struggled with this some): Getting the cow sticker

I'd agree with ya, but I didnt know any other way to get down the laser hall, I got the gun to blow up all the turrets and got the sticker as a bonus. Is there a way to get to the end without the gun? If the hallway was more of a platforming obstacle then a shooting obstacle it might play more into your hands, if the gun is only used to open the cow sticker then the long walk works perfect.

You've got to be able to aim the cow properly. I want you to go back and practice aiming the cow!

Hey my family has been hauling anti-gravity bovine to the verticle slaughter house for years, if there is one thing I know how to do its....point taken, I'll practice my cow toss.

"Hmmm. I wonder if I can fit in there?"

Sure, now all the women will be like "Does this airvent make my butt look big?"

alright, rant over.

To be honest I was sitting to far away to make out the photos the first time, Alf, Spock, Barf and whats the one on the right?

Glad you asked. "Meathead" from the movie "Meatballs II". Actually, this was my favorite when I was trying to decide simply because he wasn't as obvious, but he was one of the lowest budget aliens of all time (and the movie kind of stunk).

Yup - the original intent was for you to drag the dropped turret down the hall through the laser fire not realizing the turrets could be shot. Shooting all the turrets WAS the secret (this actually worked perfectly during initial beta. Quote from Aer0blue: "How do you get the cow sticker????")

But you know something, the more of these conversations come up the more I am enjoying the design. I'm actually slightly disappointed less people will be confused (although it helps knowing more women will think their butts look big).

By the way, I noticed within about 20 plays after adding the "Hmmm... wonder if I can fit in there?" text one of the primary tags "Nerve Wracking" disappeared to the back.

Hey my family has been hauling anti-gravity bovine to the verticle slaughter house for years, if there is one thing I know how to do its....point taken, I'll practice my cow toss.

Obviously you ain't been haulin' long enough if you can't get 8 measley floating cows into an... ehem.... shaft (not to give away anything... oops, you already did).

Edit: #@$@ you beat my high score!

This is the best level i have ever played. its not easy but not too hard, its perfect.
I did the bonus part, the nuclear core was great fun and looked cool too. I never did the cow part though but I will definatly play it again soon.

It all looks and plays beautifully and i cant really see anything wrong with it, the boss could use clues on the targets but its no big deal, you really impressed me.

I gave it 5 stars and hearted u and your level. Welldone pal and thanks for the advice on my level, I will definatly use it

Thanks! This is actually the end to one of my best weekends ever. (hope you don't mind if I write a small wall of text)

My Jacques the Acadian Warlord level, which originally got universally panned in LittleBigPlanet (everytime I would post it out there I got hate mail in my comments like "this level sucks" and 2 star ratings) suddenly was discovered after I silently reposted it by one of my favorite authors on this site (OCK, developer of "The Legion" - one of LBP must-plays) and he gave it a heart and 5 stars - which has kept up all weekend.

And I've been getting GREAT response to Splat Invaders Saga - which was originally an experiment I wasn't even going to publish (after I was going to give up making levels after the original disappointment of Jacques). I've been laughing all weekend just seeing the comments on this thread.

It's like LittleBigPlanet reached out and gave me a great big bear hug!

Wow, you did great job Ccubbage, you deserve being showcased. Not only is your work always great but you are a great contributing board member, writing long reviews and in-depth impressions of levels, with great feedback.

Splat Invaders Saga is yet another addition to your list of great levels. It starts with three stages of classic space invaders gameplay, followed by an intense and difficult bossfight, and multiple paths that lead to some awesome gameplay.

The first thing I noticed when I started your level was the amount of detail put into the enemies, their movements, and the storyline of the level. The "Do Not Enter" area at the end is almost bigger than the rest of the level! It's also the best part. Don't get me wrong, I loved the classic space invaders gameplay but what I really liked was that after you enter that door you have no idea what's going to happen, it's mysterious and cool.

After entering the "Do Not Enter" door, gamers are treated to yet another interpretation of the classic SI gameplay but this time the background scrolls instead of remaining stationary, this section is followed by a brief but inspired portal-like section. Then an a really innovative boss/puzzle where you have to shoot the outer layers of a boy to reach it's core.

Great ideas! And all very polished. It's a breath of fresh air to play such a polished experience.

So congrats on the showcase! You deserve it!

I don't know whether you remember, but the upward scrolling area was actually your idea.

At one point a while ago we ended up jumping into a game of the original Splat Invaders Deluxe together. After one of the stages you popped up the chat and mentioned "You know what would blow peoples minds? If you had an UPWARD scrolling section!". So you actually had the idea for this (I'm not sure whether you remember or not).

Also, I got the idea of what to do with the bovine antigravity chamber while floating through part of your apocalypse series! (combined with the fact that Aer0blue asked me if there could be a hidden cow area).

Man, I'd love to get that "back in the pen", but unfortunately the secret is out.... besides, one of Aer0blue's suggestions during the beta of the game was to let people know it was there BUT not necessarily how to get to it... I think he put a really cool secret area in Techno Fortress that only a couple of people have found.

It would be a shame if very few people got to experience the thrills of the bovine antigravity chamber!

Unfortunately, I didn't get to use the "cow glitch" for the bovine antigravity chamber because it was fixed in the 1.0.7 patch.

Edit: Wow... I just noticed this game is in the community spotlight... I'm stunned, but excited. I think the only way this day could end any better is if Donald Trump showed up at my house with a million dollars and a piece of pie.

So I gave your level a go CCubbage and I am thoroughly impressed! I played it with larryjoe and we both absolutely loved it in it's entirety. I also found your prestigous cow-level (zone) and laughed my *** off pressing the button as larryjoe was floating over the spikes/electricity when it dissolved the cow hahaha

Anyway, I really got no criticisms on the level itself. You pulled off a level of pure enjoyment and I now see why it's in the community spotlight. The Space Invaders were a ton of fun, and I was even more impressed with the 2 player compatability in the level. Just awesome!!!

Now that you see my sense of humor you can see why I loved your Attack of the Killer Tomatoes level so much (certainly by no means your most technical level, but man! A lot of fun)!

And yes... this was the first level that I REALLY tried to make sure the entire game was multi-player friendly (you should try it with 3 or 4 people some time. Get's messy, but it's a LOT of fun).

I'm glad you liked it!

I played it and was livid. Not because of the gameplay, but because of how hard it is. I think it is just that I suck at avoiding plasma balls, but I couldn't finish it. I got past the boss, the elevator, and then I was at the turrets that pump you full of plasma and ended up dying to that. *sighs*

I'll try to get through it later as it is a really good level.

Ok, that's long enough. I didn't reply for a little while because I wanted people to see Voltiare had put a message on my thread.... (I'm a big fan of Portal and H.A.T.E. rocks!)

Tip about the hallway: this is more of a puzzle than a plasma dodging area. Grab the turret that falls on the floor and push it in front of you as cover so the plasmas don't hit you. Then you can use it to get up into the vent.

Tip about the core with the plasma balls floating around: DON'T PANIC. These plasma balls are not random. I timed them so that if you keep your eyes on the lower part of the screen a little you can carefully walk back and forth while firing to dodge them. Just walk into the center of the room, start firing, and slowly dodge the plasma balls.

I finally got to play this with Neverynall and he showed me all the stuff in it... it's unbelievable and you have set a new bar for everyone to reach. Everytime I think this game can't take another huge leap, someone comes out of the blue and does it.

This will be alot shorter than my normal feedback, because there's nothing to critique. It's an awe inspiring level. Thanks for making it, so that we can play it.

I had to check this one out. I wasn't disappointed. I liked the way that it was a sort of arcade shooter/platformer hybrid. The enemy layouts and movement/attack patterns were implemented well. The first two stages were a bit easy but I was happy to see an incline in the difficulty level at the boss. Of course, I HAD to go up the elevator at the "end", solely because I was told not to. At first, I was a little confused as to why this section was here, seeing how it is so different from the beginning and seemed slightly out of place. That feeling soon faded as the humorous tale unfolded. The jokes were great and the reactor core was cool. It kind of reminded me of Arkanoid (one of my all time favorites) in a way. Overall, It was a bit easier than I usually like them but it's a different kind of level with different types of challenges. I landed the second place score, but I'm not sure if it uploaded :( I can't really say that there were any negative aspects to this level, it seems like you did what you set out to, and because of that, it received a heart.

I also participate in F4F. My thread "ROBO-RAMPAGE X (series)" contains two levels (so far) and when you get around to it, either/or or both would be cool. They're real tough, so try not to get frustrated :)

Thanks for the review! I will definately look at your game this evening. And yes, my level is a little bit easy, but I felt it was the right difficulty for the audience (I have TOYED with the idea of putting a lock at the end that opens the same game with the difficulty REALLY ramped up). But, I'm a hardcore gamer personally - I have yet to play a level I can't beat.

(by the way, if you want some difficulty, ace the hidden Bovine Anti-Gravity Chamber - I will be heavily impressed)

That actually seems to be a really cool idea! I'd love to play this on "expert" difficulty! And it's good to know that you haven't been defeated yet, 'cuz mine are all doozies!

A very, very exceptional level. I played this earlier today and had a blast.

Here's the pros-

I liked the visual style of the level.

Good length if you decide to take the long route.

Some clever puzzles.

Cons-

The first boss fight was a little tedious and the weak points weren't clearly marked. Here's how I would fix this- I would put an LED light on each weak point, and when that weak point is destroyed, the light will turn off.

I gave this level 5 stars. Nice job! It is definitely a gem.

Thanks for the input!

Yes, even though the 2nd part is optional, the only reason there is an exit point is to keep with the story of being kicked out of the level and having the choice. Thought it was a cool idea.

I may end up doing this. I had thought about it several times but I kept thinking it would mess with the aesthetics. But, when you keep hearing something from several people it would probably help.

Heres your much deserved, and much delayed, feedback (sorry about that)

once again you've done it, I enjoyed the first splat so much and since then its only got better.

The design to the level is nice and crisp, a good amount of detail but not so much it blinds you. I particularly enjoyed the bit where you had to use the camera for cover (although I didnt know at the time and pushed a chair there instead :) )

Levels need more sections where you use your head rather than your reflexes.

Sadly all my major points have already been covered by other people, and all the bugs are non-existent.

It really is a clean production, once again 5 stars and hearted!

was pretty fun. Kinda reminded me of Portal to a degree, the way they wanted to be rid of you when they were done with ya :P I went up the elevater that told me not to... and I shouldn't have :) the camera at an angle here throws me off and I can't dodge properly, could you perhaps just zoom out the camera without tilting it? I'll try it again tomorrow, but it'd be much apreciated :) other than the the core level was fun, and had a cute story.

I managed to beat it a few days ago and I thought it was really good. The highlights for me were the Spaceballs photos, the Space Invader spoof, and the boss. Although, I think the boss is probably the easiest part of the level, which seem a little weird. I also liked the cows and the simulator. BTW, why cows?

I'm glad you had fun!

On the boss being easy - this room used to be MUCH harder. During initial playtesting it was throwing the players. They kept dying and sending me feedback that they couldn't finish. It being this late in the game I knew that if people died they they probably wouldn't go for it again, so making it easier was a compromise I made (you know how you make a game and you think it's easy, but everyone else keeps dying?...)

I'm thinking of publishing a "hard-core" verson of this game that unlocks by beating the first one. Then I can increase the difficulty of the whole game to what it originally was.

The cows: It's kind of a standard science-fiction theory that aliens abduct cows. Since this was an alien-abduction based game having areas where aliens were experimenting with cows seemed appropriate. (and also, it was Aer0blue's vote that I add a secret cow area).

the camera at an angle here throws me off and I can't dodge properly, could you perhaps just zoom out the camera without tilting it?

Unfortunately, this is one of the areas that I have gotten tremendous feedback on (in fact, many of the top authors have mentioned that the tilting of this area was a great idea). I definately value your opinion, but this is one area I can't really mess with. Besides, it isn't really a camera ange - the entire section of the level is tilted, which means to straighten it I would need to break down the section AND change the entire lead-in to the next section.

great level ccubbage i really enjoyed it.

Pros

basically everything was perfect

Cons

on the third stage where you have to be recycled, it was kinda hard to know where to shoot the enemy maybe placing some target stickers where to shoot could be great. or maybe i'm a bad aimer? lol

just past stage 3 where you pull the lever to go up and you end up in another battle zone, when you reach the top and go into the square i think you should put an arrow going left because i didn't know where to go till i accidentally leaned the analog left and kept going lol.

Overall i think this is a great level 5 stars and a heart:)

There are now 3 red lights (they actually look pretty cool...) on the boss in the 3rd stage indicating the areas that need to be targeted. When you destroy each section the light turns off (there is still an explosion also)

Now when you reach the top of the elevator section there is a camera pan zooming in and panning to the left so you can see that the hallway goes in that direction.

Cool, I know exactly what you mean. When you get so many compliments on a certain section and one person just comes along and didn't like it :) Like the "Pow" "Splat" "Boom"s and such on my Super Color Shooter level, I've had SO many compliments and such (like from you) then I had one person say they didn't like them and they were a bit much :) to each there own I guess. I will be retrying this level again shortly, least by the end of this weekend.

Hi, just got round to playing your new level and I have to say, Its the best shoot gun at things and laugh type games i've ever played. Saying that I havn't played many of them so take that with pinch of salt.

Pros:

Great visual presentation.
Varied attack paterns (Moving the invaders without any connectors is also cleaver)
Nicely scaled difficulty I especially like the way the boss ship came without warning at the end of stage three, caught me out.
Multi-Path Option I thought this part was funny, like if you are a bit rubbish leave now.
Level duration felt right aswell.

Cons:

Got the feeling that the ceiling on stage 1-3 is slighty too high.
On the part where you have to push the vase into the glass, I got shot trying take out the first turret, I then had to walk all the way back to stage 4 to get the gun. Putting a gun collection point in the vase room would be cool then I don't have to push the vase past the turrets.:grr:
My last moan isn't about your level, its about whats going on in the communtity at the moment. The MGS pack introduced the tron style material that you've use, and I've notice it starting to become the most overuse material in levels. And with the release of Tron2 just around the corner, you know whats going to happen.(Not filler)

Anyway an Excellenty designed level, Its a hi 5 and hearted.

I'm glad you had fun. As you know, I also had a lot of fun in your "Old Skool Cinematic Rubbish" level last night (putting a plug in on my thread to get people to go play YOUR game).

Actually, dragging the "vase" (it was supposed to be a cartoonish broken off turrent, but if we call it a vase it makes me look like a better artist) is the way the problem is supposed to be solved. The fact that you can shoot the turrets and get into the room at the end of the hall is a secret. If I were to put a gun placement where you say, it would spoil the secret (as well, I think it adds a little to the humor that you had to go all the way back to get the gun. I did that on purpose.... sorry)

I gotta agree with you - this material is being overused. It's fine if it's material mixed with some other materials, but getting a little old. But if you look at when I first did Splat Invaders, it was done right after the release of the MGS pack and wasn't overdone at the time (and I also only used it during the beginning of the game). When I do a Splat sequel I will not be doing this type of aesthetic (H.A.T.E. 2 has the right idea - Voltiare used this material but stickered it up to give it a unique look).

Anyway, thanks for the feedback!

Hi!

I played this one 4 or 5 times since you published it and found this one very very great! There was a lot of improvements since the Deluxe version that answered most of the suggests that have done.
Your final bonus section is a level in himself and the visuals are here great and very reminiscent of the 80's/90's shoot them'up games.
Actually, this level is probably one that is the most far of the classical LBP levels in term of concept, gameplay and feeling. A true STU i said!!!
I now don't see specific changes you could made to improve your level...
But i'm sure i will replkay it and will write one or more suggests in the future ;)
Of course, it is a 5 stars and hearted level ;)

Wow, man! Thanks for the great review! It means a lot coming from an author with your skill.

I think with Splat I found my niche in authoring. I'm not that good at the graphics part, so I figured if I based all my graphics around 80's videogames I wouldn't need to be that good of an artist (I'm much better technically than I am artistically). I used to be a videogame designer back in the 80's, so that probably shows a little.

Right now I'm working on a sequel to this game with one of my old comrades from the 80's that I used to work with (Robert Trabucco). He worked with me a little on this game (he thought up the chair room and the Hillary Clinton room...) and is coming up with a lot of material this time (some people are going to DIE when they see what's in this one!)

Awesome level!!

Pros:
+Loved the throw back space invaders game...I think yours was way more fun than the original...almost a mix of Galaga and Space Invaders
+Interesting movements behind walls...made it tricky but different from all the stuff out there
+Nice fake scoreboard...as soon as I stepped on it I was like...crap, an elevator going up and I missed it...then I realized it was a fake...nice one.

Cons:
- My space ship after the reactor level killed me when it landed...then i respawned at the top and it took forever to get my guy back down the opening
- I couldn't get my guy to go down for the bonus stuff/cow mini-game...not sure how to do that
- Wanted more levels on splat invaders!! It was so fun!!

Great job, 5 stars/hearted!!!

Thanks! Interestingly, this IS a real scoreboard. I just carefully placed a magic mouth with a cut scene right next to it so that it would stop you from stepping on it accidentally. You CAN actually exit the game here (if, for instance, you are a woosey player and you can't take a little challenge... I was going to see if I could make this exit directly out to LittleBigPlanet for Crybabies...)

Cons:
- My space ship after the reactor level killed me when it landed...then i respawned at the top and it took forever to get my guy back down the opening

Yes, it is actually possible to die when I release the escape pod spinning and have it plummet to the earth. Doesn't happen too often (I'd say about 2% of the time) but it can happen. However, it's completely avoidable if you make sure when the pod crashes you don't get hit in the head by a wayward rocket.

- I couldn't get my guy to go down for the bonus stuff/cow mini-game...not sure how to do that

Keep your paintinator and shoot all the turrets in the hallway. This will open a door that gives you the cow sticker. You can use the cow sticker at the base of the ramp to get into the Bovine Antigravity Chamber!

- Wanted more levels on splat invaders!! It was so fun!!

Working on it.... There WILL be a Splat II, although it will be quite a bit different (but with some areas of classic Splat gameplay)

Yup. When you get to the "simulator" room there is a key on the floor. This unlocks the "Hardcore" version of Splat Invaders Saga. It's the same game but with the following differences:

No more shields on stage 1 and 2 (only 1 shield on stage 3)

The "recycling unit" now fires twice as fast

There are a lot more enemies in the vertical lift

The plasmas in the nuclear core fire twice as fast

Which boss fight - the "recycling unit" or the "reactor core"?

With the recycling unit, the EXACT position of where the rockets start firing depend on how long it takes to get through the 3 stages, so it may be a little different for everyone. With the "reactor core" I play tested quite a bit to make sure the pattern constantly changed so that you couldn't necessarily just stand there.

But, let me know where it happened and I can play with it.

I have to admit the 'female specimen' part was NOT my idea. This and the alien TV sitting room were both the idea of a co-worker of mine (Robert Trabucco). He even provided me with all the pics. He said "you know, we have to assume the aliens have been watching and studying the news on the earth... and somehow COMPLETELY misinterpret what they're seeing...."

This was really great, I haven't read through the entire thread so forgive me if some comments were already made.

I really loved the classical bit, it was just spot on.

The enemies however did go out of max. range of the paintinator though, not sure if I liked that.

The "recycler" was great too, only the warning lights for the bombs were a bit on the small side, it also goes out of reach for quite a long time for no apperent reason.

I really liked the optional side path, the earth and moon background looks great and has a nice overall feel to it. I don't know if I missed something though but I couldn't finish the level because after you go in the forbidden elevator there's no way (that I've seen anyway) to get back tot the score board, that might be the point of the hidden part though.

Also when you get to the secret part, you can progress to the cow level if you somewhere dropped your paininator... The cow level itself was fun and original jumping puzzle, turning the cows into hamburgers did get me to laugh. I didn't throw many cows into it but I think there was no point or conclusion to it, is that right?

All in all, great stuff, good idea, excellent execution.

It's kind of interesting how different people think. I don't think I've ever had anyone play the game quite this way.

At the end of the hall with the turrets a message pops up saying "I wonder if I can fit in there?" with a cut scene camera pointing towards the air vent. You need to drag the turret that falls on the floor (or a chair) over and get in the vent.

Shooting all the turrets and getting the cow sticker was a secret. You don't need to do this, but it's interesting that you managed to get the secret but not get through the main part of the game.

The enemies however did go out of max. range of the paintinator though, not sure if I liked that.

Yes, did a LOT of adjustments here to get it as close to perfect as I could. I liked the amount the invaders moved, however, and preventing them from flying up higher I felt took away from the game. Also, there have been many similar arcade games (such as Galaga) where the enemies were sometimes off screen and couldn't be shot, so it keeps with the tradition.

The "recycler" was great too, only the warning lights for the bombs were a bit on the small side, it also goes out of reach for quite a long time for no apperent reason.

Drama! It comes down, shoots a few rockets, then disappears quickly. Makes the player think "where's it going to drop next???". This was also copied from earlier arcade games.

There's 2 exits in this game - one near the beginning, and another if you go up into the vent at the end of the hallway.

The cow level itself was fun and original jumping puzzle, turning the cows into hamburgers did get me to laugh. There's 8 cows.

I hope you get a chance to go through the whole thing someday - I think you missed the best part of the game.

I got up to the cow part and got stuck :/ Do I just keep throwing cows in forever? I ended up quitting because I couldn't figure out a way past it, but I figured that was far enough to give some feedback!

Feedback #1: Clarify the cow minigame :P Though it's really fun and I lol'd when a hamburger fell, I couldn't figure out how to get past that point and ended up quitting :/ Plus, for the hallway above the cow minigame, you should put a gun in the house. I had to run aaaaall the way back to that diagonal shmup box just to get my gun back because I accidentally clicked circle.

#2. I LOVED IT. Soooo fun and satisfying, you need to make an entire level more like that diagonal bit after the first exit! That was the BEST.

#3. The text looked great. Big, pixely and noticable. Just awesome.

#4. The Moon and Earth bit was awesome! I loved seeing them just float by, like you were really in space.

#5. That's it! I loved it. I can't think of anything wrong other than my confusion in what to do at that cow game.

Make another one pls :D

F4F: Stella Deus! There's a link in my sig. It's a co-op level, so bring one friend and have fun :D Any feedback regarding glitches, confusing parts, hard parts, visuals, boring parts, ANYTHING. I want it all! Thanks!

man i loved this level. when ever i can get the mgs pack i'm gonna make a arcade level kinda like this :D

anyways great level i only had 3 things i didn't like. first whenever i went to far left or right on the stages i can't see most of the enemies (it's even worse with 2 people).

second i had no idea what the story was. so i'm sitting here in the going what the...? close to the end.

last i don't even know what i'm supposed to do in the cow mini-game also the button stopped spitting out cows so i left the room thinking that was really stupid.

but the good things was awesome stages 'cause i felt like i was kinda playing an old arcade game. even the boss at stage 3 looked kinda arcade like if you made it more blocky. i had a great time with though i'm scraching my head with how people got scores way in the 4 thousands after i completely beat the level. all in all i'll give a it an easy 5/5.

also can you check out my epic journey part 1 and part 2 levels? thanks.

Hmmm... I'll check it out, but I've done a lot of tweaking to camera angles and played multi-player with it tons of times and haven't noticed any camera issues.

The story is alien abduction, plain and simple. However, so you figure it out as you go along. It's kind of my style of story-telling. "Portal" did something kind of similar.

The cow mini-game has 8 cows. You float them to get points, and then you're done. I thought of doing something that told you there were no more cows, but then I thought "what would happen in real life if there weren't any more cows?". The answer: cows would stop popping out.

Hey CCubbage, I played this again today and found a couple things that I had missed before! The Cow Mini Game was one of them and I thought it was hilarious and fun. While doing it, I was concerned that someone could essentially do it forever and get loads of points, but I see that you've already said it is limited to 8 cows.

I did find another area with the potential for unlimited points though and that is during the final boss battle. It appears that the two point bubbles that drop in that room have no limit. It seemed like I was able to get them rather easily too as the point bubbles would stop the plasma balls, forming a clear path to me. I wasn't sure if this is something that concerned you or not, but wanted to let you know.

Nope - it was on purpose and by design. Here's the idea - throw a single point bubble onto the floor that only stays there for a few seconds before disappearing. In order to pick them up you have to run back and forth dodging plasmas. I figure before anyone can TRULY get a lot of points doing this chances are they will start to get punchy and start hitting plasmas accidentally. By the way, they aren't unlimited - there are a LOT of them, but they do end.

It was kind of a funny thought to me. I'm always throwing these kinds of little scoring things in my games to have a wide range of scores on the leaderboard.

Okay, I thought it might be intentional. I must say that I didn't think it was too difficult to dodge the plasma, but you are right about players getting punchy. I certainly did and it cost me a good number of points!

Exactly.... you can tell from the game I have kind of an "interesting" sense of humor. Right up there with the "E.T." section in Splat Invaders II that emulates the original ET video game by you having to kill yourself to get out of a hole.... I knew it would probably cost me a star rating, but I just couldn't help it. I thought to myself "How do you create an experience as close to the original ET video game as possible?"

Either fortunately OR unfortunately - I just can't stand to do the same thing twice. I took completely different directions with the 2 games because I wanted to hit many different gameplay styles.

If you look at the spotlight comments between both levels, a lot of people like the first one more, and a lot of others like the 2nd one more, and still some others really look at them as 2 separate experiences because they are so different. The only way I would do a third one is if (once again) I had some cool innovative ideas that would go in a third direction.

The first was curtailed to more of the "general" LBP audience. It was simple and accessible - and obviously is a more generally accepted kind of game. The 2nd one curtails more to a slightly more "hardcore" gamer - someone who likes the challenge of trying to fly a pod down a tight cavern, have more difficult splat fights, or even challenge their brain in a boss fight in which you have to do more than just shoot.

I'd played Splat Invaders Deluxe, but hadn't gotten to this yet.

All I have to say is: I. LOVE. THIS. LEVEL.

The Splat Invaders gameplay was always a success, but the additions on this one were just awesome. Bovine Gravity = genius. The "bullet hell" core, was a nice change of pace, and the "simulation?" angle at the end was great storytelling.

One suggestion (and this one was aggrevating): You need a paintinator in the Portal looking area. I had ditched mine so I could try to grab stuff and then went to the area with the dropdown guns. My first instinct was that you wanted me to dodge the bullets (nearly impossible), and I figured if I was supposed to shoot those things, there would be a gun there. Ultimately, I had to walk back to the angled arena to get a gun, and that's a long walk.

5/5

Yeah, I know it's aggravating but it's kind of my sense of humor (which is, granted, irritating sometimes) - shooting the turrets in the ceiling to open the door is a secret, and it would spoil the secret if I put a paintinator right near the area.

HOWEVER, I designed it so you could grab a chair or the fallen turret as cover to get past the plasma. Either way - whether you've had to grab something as cover or go back a long distance to get the paintinator gun - I've had a good laugh at your expense :P

I honestly don't know how this game ended up this good. I think my muse was really paying attention. It felt like I didn't have to do practically any work - I was laughing so much while creating it I was tearing up.

And the anti-gravity bovine chamber is kind of interesting - when I designed the level I didn't know practically anyone on this site, but I was a big fan of Razhoteps tomb. Aer0blue said he would give me comments on the level if I put cows in it.

I wasn't thinking that it had to be on the top floor of that area...maybe just as you enter the area from the glass ramps.

I guess I get the joke...just not sure other folks will. My guess is that folks get stuck there and you get some undeserved less than stellar ratings.

CCubbage
03-18-2009, 02:35 AM
You're probably right... but, I've gotten a lot of enjoyment out of the results. Someone posted a GREAT video on Youtube of 2 people playing the game and it's pretty comical when they drag the chairs and stuff across the floor to get past the plasma. And if you read some of the above posts, a lot of players actually think it was THIER idea to use this stuff as cover.

Quote from Maraz Matari:

But I had back up :P a friend and I grabbed a chair a piece and used them as cover and RAN!!! :P it was real funny

I'm a true believer that it's these moments that people will remember for a long time, and that can make a great game - even if it means getting lower scores from some people.

And I COMPLETELY bucked the system with Splat Invaders II by adding areas that most young LBP players will never get through. :P

CCUbbage,

I played this level last night and had a great time. Only, unlike (it would seem) everyone else here, I was unable to finish. I kept getting cheap kills every time I dropped into the reactor core area. Perhaps it was just my bad luck (more likely my bad gaming skillz), but just out of curiosity... did I overlook something? There are so many plasma balls (albeit slow moving plasma balls) and no apparent cover (though - I only even made it to the paintinator twice - the other times I dropped right onto a plasma ball. Was very frustrating for me.

Other than this, the level was fantastic. The arcade rooms were brillitant and beautiful; the puzzles were fun without too much head scratching; and the humor was spot on.

I guess I just need to try it again, see if I get better luck in the reactor core this time.

Nice work though! Really!

CCubbage
03-27-2009, 05:49 AM
Interestingly, the reactor core looks more dangerous than it really is. The plasma balls are carefully timed so that if you shoot up but watch them you can slowly just walk around and pretty easily avoid them.

However, if you DO die and have to drop back down into there - there is a camera before you drop down that looks almost all the way to the floor. So, go to the edge and wait until there are no plasmas in the way - then drop and grab the gun again.

Funny thing - when Voltaire played it his feedback was "I thought it was strange the easiest part of the entire game was the reactor core". And MrSuperComputer left me a comment "you know, you can just slowly walk around, pick up point bubbles, and never get hit". So I think it's really more psychological - the area is unbelievable simple once you see what it's doing.

v0rtex
03-27-2009, 06:58 AM
Yeah - I just went and re-played it (before reading your advice) and did just that: eased up to the edge and waited for the right moment to drop down. Then, as you said... very easy to avoid getting hit (though I still did, LOL).

Finished the level, found the cow section (but the cow got stuck going up and I died trying to get another cow over there and had to restart). The finish was amusing and brilliant.

Great level - sorry for complaining to you about my lack of skillz.

Heh.... oh no, wouldn't change that one. That 2-way-multi-layer-spinning core was the most complex object I've ever built! Someone (I have NO idea who) put up a Youtube video of 2 people playing Splat Invades Saga - when the they got into this section a chat bubble pops up saying "Cool!".

Wow!
Just played this and I must say it was a fantastic level. I had great fun in the battle arena section at the beginning, though you might want to tell plaers they can destroy the cover. I played the bonus section, and it was very fun, the pictures on the walls had me chuckling. I though the use of materials and sticky was hery well done, and I thoroughly enjoyed several sections of shooter action. One minor quibble, at the reactor core section the camera angle as you go down is kinda wierd and I died 5 times immediately after spawning there as is slid down. Not sure how you'd fix it tho. All in all a great level, 5 starts and Hearted. also, I realise you don't appear to do F4F, but could you possibly check out my Plasma Factory Pt. 1 level? (link in my sig)
Thanks,

Thanks for the feedback. In the reactor core, I have the camera in the best position I could. If you walk right to the edge before dropping into the core, you should be able to see virtually all the way to the floor to time your drop.

I will definately check out your level.

I actually do F4F and have 2 F4F levels on the showcase right now (such as Tiger Woods Mini Golf and Splat Invaders II), but eventually I take the F4F off a level a while after the release (this level has been receiving feedback for about 3 months now).

Right. I`ll say what I said the first time I played it. That was epic! I wondered where the level had gone to last night when I was attempting to spam your comments page haha! On with my feedback.

There were a couple of small bugs I noticed.

- In the long corridor with the vent at the end there are doll bodies (I think) in alcoves all along it. At one point I jumped, landed in one of them and was squashed instantly.
- At the part where 'the simulator breaks, you can fall down the back of that black thing which I assume is the ride down? I went to the back layer and walked towards it only to plummet to earth. I also saw two rockets lying in the grass back down below, not sure if that`s related to me missing out on the journey down.
- I also want to ask what the deal is with the corridor with the turrets. Are we meant to shoot them? I stupidly got hit and ended up walking all the way back down the space ramps to get to the paint gun. I actually meant to ask when I first played it, why there isn`t a paint gun up the top.
- In one of the training rooms (think it`s the one with the boss) the shelters are made up of 4 blocks of dissolve material.. The top right block in both of the shelters doesn`t disappear regardless of how many times it`s hit.

Other than that I think it`s great. I don`t think having the early exit though. Looking at your scoreboard, only 50% of players keep going and for me, the level up to that point is very good, but after that becomes great so they`re missing out (and lowering your star rating).

Anyway I loved it before, I stll love it now, 5 stars and a heart from me.

Wow, nice feedback. I'll check out the hallway and see if I can put some invisible dark matter in there.

Are you saying the dark pod was already gone near the ending?

Also, I MAY go ahead and prevent the player from reaching the scoreboard near the beginning. I figured, "who in their right mind would exit when the elevator was mentioned?" But if they are exiting, they think it's just a little mini game....

The part with the plasmas - I actually wanted them to have to get through the hallway by using cover and not use the paintinatir - shooting the turrets to get the cow sticker is supposed to be a secret, but this keeps coming up over and over and over again, so even though I like it this way I will probably change it....

Absolutely brilliant level, nearly all of the way through I was going mad hammering the R1 button. I couldn't find any issues with it other that when i blew up the boss in stage 3 it landed in the exit so i had to restart, but I don't think thats a solvable issue, seeing as it depends where you finish the boss off... unless I'm mistaken.
5 stars and a heart. Good work.

No the dark pod was there, but you can get down a hole near it.
Ah... I KNOW WHAT HAPPENED! I'll do a change tonight - when you destroy the core and drop down, there's invisible dark matter preventing you from falling to the right where the pod is. The pod descending is triggered by a sensor switch when you jump into the pod. Since you're one of those players that like to jump around like a monkey, you were probably bouncing around before the simulator broke and accidentally triggered the pod descent before you saw it.

I'll put an AND switch on it so the simulator must break AND you must trigger the sensor switch to begin the descent.

I couldn't find any issues with it other that when i blew up the boss in stage 3 it landed in the exit so i had to restart, but I don't think thats a solvable issue, seeing as it depends where you finish the boss off... unless I'm mistaken.

Thanks for the feedback! Obviously the explosion and collapse of the recycling unit is kind of random (and cool!), there has always been a way to get out of the room. The pieces that it collapses into are small enough that you can get out no matter what (you can even grab the material and pull it out of the way if you need to). Although I will definately agree, every once in a while (maybe 1 out of 50 times) the debris falls in a way that makes it a platforming pain.

But in the end, I think it's worth it because I was trying to create an incredibly memorable moment. Instead of building a brain on it that makes it disappear, I built it out of many smaller pieces joined together by 3 body parts. The body parts disappear causing it to appear to crumble into pieces.

Matt 82
05-11-2009, 03:18 PM
I just had a replay to check. You sure you have invisible matter stopping you fall down? I just moved to the back layer, walked slowly towards the pod and I dropped. No jumping involved I promise. I did set off the pod once I'd fallen though. I popped to see if I could do it again but it had followed me down.

05-11-2009, 03:22 PM
Oh, sorry.... I misunderstood your post. I thought you said it WASN'T there, but you didn't say that at all. Must be the wine I had last night. Gotcha. I'll fix it when I get home.

(the dark matter I was referring to is hanging above and steers you away from the background pod as your dropping from above - has nothing to do with this issue)

I agree - the Bovine Antigravity chamber is actually my favorite part of the level, and a lot of people miss it. I'm contemplating what to do here.... maybe get rid of the sticker switch altogether and instead just have a switch maybe? It would still be hidden because if the player didn't walk over to the left they would never know it was there.... any thoughts?

it's fine the way it is. i was surprised when i saw jaeyden saying he hadn't found it. especially as he's played it more than once. it's only a few steps off the beaten path so i wouldn't consider it hidden at all. maybe i just play differently from everyone else but i saw it the first time i played it, and by the time i played it again i'd forgotten all about it and walked into it again.

for me, the only thing stopping more people doing it is a) a lot will have collection off b) a lot of people just race through levels so wouldn't bother back tracking, or replaying.

** jaeyden- i'm not knocking your playing skills or anything in this post. sorry if it sounds that way.

I missed the chamber my first couple plays, but once I figured out how to get there, it really gave me a feeling of accomplishment. The room is one of the best parts of the level, and while it's a shame that many people won't see it, that's also what makes it such a satisfying secret.

Ultimately, I think it depends on how badly you want people to play that room. I know that as a creator, I want the player to experience and find as many secrets as possible. Especially if I have put the time and effort into creating them.

Obviously the original publish of Splat Invaders Saga and the new publish are going to be 2 different sets of high scores, so we'll need to compare the two :)

The key to all of this, of course, is a) mastering the art of guilding anti-gravity bovine to the vertical slaughterhouse, b) having a lot of patience in the core, and c) being really fast at grabbing cows in the process of being abducted, and d) carefully NOT grabbing point bubbles when shooting 8 bit aliens until the end, since you can then get a higher score multiplier.

Yeah, I had to publish it totally separate. The level was released before the cool pages change, so it never had a lot of attention... however, the heart ratio on it is phenominal so I've got to keep it permenantly. I figure if this launch doesn't go so well I always have the original.

But, if you guys keep fighting over the high score I should be on page 1 in a few hours :D.

Also, I got rid of the cow sticker and changed the design a bit... the sticker idea was starting to bother me since a lot of people may have the collect turned off.

I just got done with Splat Invaders, it was cool. I can see how a high score battle could break out! I didn't get that high of a score though. :(

The idea of breaking out of the experiment and trashing the place was fun. I love the sterile rooms that made it look like some kind of crazy laboratory.
The alluring distraction was hilarious!

The only issue I had was the ramps leading up to the lab were pretty dark and it was slightly tough to see were I needed to go. Not a big deal in the end really though.

I gave it five stars and a heart.

Please check out my level (Escape From Transylvania!) sometime and leave me some feedback.:)

I'll give this a try when I can. The line "a) mastering the art of guilding anti-gravity bovine to the vertical slaughterhouse" just intrigues me so much!

Also, hahahaha, Diablo references :P

The walk in the glass chamber through space (the ramps) is designed to give you the feeling of "I can't quite tell where I'm going here..." BUT - it's also designed so that material pushes you to where you need to go, which makes it virtually impossible not to go in the right direction. :) So, in other words, if you walk right and hit a wall, if you start walking left you are already on the proper plane.

I'll check out your level when I get home tonight.

Watch for the secret area to get into this mini-game (which many have found to be the highlight of the level, but most miss....). Clue - look for a small section of blue on the floor.

Also - don't forget to play the "Splat Invaders Saga" that is separated from my other levels and has the fewest plays, if you don't mind (or just look for the one in cool levels sitting on top of Florida)

I managed 4th. : ) I obviously missed a huge 10,000 bubble bonus somewhere along the way!

It played just great, and even better made me lol quite a few times. As has been mentioned the cows alone are worth the entrance fee. : )

Ah yes, the scoring system - each piece of the level has a totally different strategy for getting points. I think MrSuperComputer is the only one to truly master them.... and today he beat the highest score I've ever had on the game.... I very rarely exit and record my high scores, but the highest I've ever gotten is a little over 6900, but MrSuperComputer broke 7000 today.

On the republished level (it's sitting away from my other levels) there is no cow sticker anymore. I got rid of this because people may not have collecting turned on. When entering the mothership from the space walk, just walk to the left and the bovine anti-gravity chamber will open. Theres a little LED there that turns on.

I hope you replaced the prize bubble with score bubbles?

CCubbage

Absolutely! I took out the prize bubble and had Eddy go down into the basement to get me 2 score bubbles to replace it (he had a few extras piled up from when PS3's crashed during the emitting process).

I'm sure if I didn't, you would have figured it out and reported it as an issue.

Hi CCubbage,

I got a chance to play this one today. Really fun level. Brought back great memories of strange little arcades, pockets full of quarters and folks playing space invaders. Of course ...then it gets cool and twisty. Nice plot line behind the game as well as some multipath changeups. Really fun shooter!

I also liked the transition with the planets etc.. though possibly a bit long of a walk up. Probably just me as, I still had the adrenaline going from all that shooting.

Loved the Bovine anti gravity room. I lost it.. I think that might have been my favorite part just from the ?!?! factor, but did really enjoy shooting the core as well as the other shooting stages.

Fun as well as funny. Great great level. I was really impressed thinking how much stuff you must have going on behind the scenes controlling all that stuff.

Really nice level. I have to go back and see if I can improve my score.

I'm glad you liked it! This was one level where I just sat around with friends and laughed about the things I could add. It was actually a coworker, Robert Trabucco, who thought up the Hillary Clinton part and the different alien photos. It's incredible what you can come up with if you're not trying to think it all up yourself.

I actually got tired of the MM cow sticker, so I did my own. So, the cows have changed!

In the Bovine antigravity chamber, I also made the cows heads go back and forth slowly as you're dragging them, which actually makes it a LOT funnier.

These changes are in the republished version, not in the original on my moon.

Those were nice touches. The alien photos were pretty darn funny.. and how you used the Hillary photo was hysterical. What was the pic on the first tv screen on the right in the alien viewing center? I couldn't quite make it out.

Anyway.. not sure when you republished, but good luck! I noticed you were up to page 3 on the cool levels with it last night.

Oh... one thought. I am wondering if the level icon does it complete justice. It is a great pic, but thinking some text or a montage of some sort might be helpful to make it stand out better.

Oh well... later!

Thanks for the input!

The main reason I republished is to collect data. I've been trying to figure out how get the best results from publishing, and what kinds of levels have the most success. Besides, this level was released before cool pages changed and it took a LONG time to get decent plays out of it.

I'm going to try your advice today with the icon. I've been changing it to slightly different things to see what the result is. Maybe a big "SPLAT" in 8-bit lettering with an 8-bit alien behind it... see what happens.

Ahhh... yeah. I know what you mean. To be honest, my Baja level actually started as science project to collect data as well. I felt my earlier level was actually better, but didn't do anything near to how well Baja did. I will be adding it to the level showcase soon to get some input asap.

Absolutely... same thing happened with my Tiger Woods Mini Golf - I built it around what I felt would do well in cool pages, and it worked. But my Splat series is definately my favorite.

..that mini golf level was huge fun!! I forgot to mention I had played it quite awhile back before joining this forum. Replayed it probably 20+ times. I also enjoyed goofing around and jumping onto the whale trying to get a pic on his nose.

Thanks! Kind of wonder as a creator what kind of lunatics are out there playing your levels :D.

The biggest thing with the Tiger Woods level was trying to figure out what would be fun to hit a ball into.... of COURSE a whale came to mind. I got a kick out of the uploaded photos for that one.

Like i've said before, addictive level, played it several times and managed to end at 2nd place. But i've had some weird issue's while playing, although i've got to say these, are things you can't really fix i'm afraid.

- The invaders at stage one didn't move or didn't shoot (only happened to me once, have no idea how that came)
- The boss was indestructable (i killed it many times before, i know how to do it) but a moment ago i played online with 2 other players and it was just indestructable. At the moment it should be destructed it just dissapeared and came back. We shooted at the boss for 10 minutes in a row with 3 i think.
(only happened once)

Oh, another thing that has keeping me busy for a while now...
When you look at your "A" from "Stage" you can see that it's not completly straight (at the bottom it seems like the grid has slightly moved, don't know how to explain it otherwise).
I've had this problem lots of times before (when i'm building further on a previous part with grid on, the grid sometimes seems to be slightly moved, very slightly like 1 or 2 pixels) When i look at your "A" it seems like you had the exact same problem, any idea how that comes?

Hmmm. Yeah, I've played this hundreds of times and I've never seen these issues. It's possible if you were playing with others that lag caused some kind of switch issue. I'll check it out, but I've never seen any issue.

Issue 1: Were you playing multiplayer? The aliens at the beginning are activated by a sensor switch when you walk in. I wonder if somehow the sensor switch didn't fire, and therefore they never started to move or shoot. If so, it may be a lag or rare issue in LBP.

Issue 2: The boss has 3 sections, and its possible that the bottom blew off of one of the sections so you had to shoot really high to finish one of the sections.

I believe if you're using the grid, but there's other objects around (even off screen) the grid can center its self to another object. It may not have been obvious to me before because I was using a different type of material than it is now, so the new material may make it more obvious.... but I didn't notice it.

The only issue I've had was while I was goofing around a bit too much in the room where the sim fails exposing the two aliens. I think I jumped on top of the elevator and possibly even grabbed, but the elevator took off without me leaving me stranded. What was funny is a bit later, I saw the smoke trail from the rocket taking me back home. ...well.. supposedly to taking me back home.

No, i wasn't playing multiplayer this time, i guess this is just one of those rare LBP issue's.
I've tried to reproduce it but without results :(

Interesting.... there was an issue where if you jumped around before the simulator breaks you could set off the POD, but I fixed that and republished it several days ago using a double logic switch. I'll play with it.

Just in case it makes a difference, I expanded the sensor switch. Other than that, it's a simple permenant switch. Oh well, at least it made the aliens easier to hit! :D
