View Full Version : If I Ran The Contest Crew...

We're not the contest crew but we can pretend we are. If you ran the Contest Crew, what would LBPC11 be like? Any ideas?

Here's mine. In LBPC11, you have to make a level, any level, where you don't play as your sackboy. You're in the controlinator the whole time until the scoreboard. "So what?" I hear you say, "I'll just make some controlinator based level!" Ahh, but here's the catch. The level cannot have ANY MOVING PARTS. No sackbots, movers, pistons, or anything! The level will be just materials turning on and off and logic. People will have to be innovative!

So that's my idea. So, if you ran the Spotlight Crew, what would be your LBPC11?

LBPC11 would be all about the peanuts.

I'd like to see a contest to make a minigame, or series on minigames based on a theme, obstacle or powerup.

Either way, the Jetpack needs some love.

Also, peanuts would be good.

I would like to see a No-Jump Platformer as well as something similar to the fill-in-the-blanks contest the German community did.

I would also like to see an open world contest, but realistically that would never happen.

I also got an idea last night. Back to basics, where people would try to emulate the charm and wonder of LBP1.

Correct!

However, I wish it's a Tron-themed contest, where you make cyber-themed levels.

If I had the choice, it would be an abandoned house contest. The goal would be to make the abandoned houses as detailed and atmospheric as possible. I would be very excited to see all the different designs and texture/sticker/decorations the community could come up with. :D

I'd like to see a contest where people recreate real games in LBP.

It would be neat to see a contest where you're given certain materials, and you can only build the level using those materials, And one of the materials has to be useful (ie - Attract-O-Gel).

Nono, wait! Only material you can use is Dark Matter.

Half the scoring will be on how attractive it is.

You have to make a level out of solely dark matter, pistons and checkpoints. Good luck.

Instead of limiting the system by removing tools, maybe restrict it in a different way?

Like a fairy-tale level, self-made or created from an existing one. Though if it's fairy-tale contest, I'd it so that we are supposed to make it from a scratch. Why? Because the existing ones from Snow-white to Doctor Who are, apart from the latter extremely repetitive and overdone in concept.

Or I'd just make one where we're supposed to create a single-level nutshell of our favourite TV-show. Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Friends, Doctor Who, there would be limitless possibilities!

I'd say the Disney style fairy-tales are overdone. But the Brothers Grimm versions are a lot darker and more interesting if you make a level out of it. XD

I agree. When I played LBP2 in Cross Controller Mode, there aren't very many good cross controller community levels. There are no Mm Picks, people buy the DLC just to get the prizes, and there are very few players per CC level. At least my current project is a CC level.

But the main reason why they don't expect you to make a CC level in the contest is because very few people have the vita, ps3, and cross controller DLC all at once. The connectivity is also an issue.

I personally do not see a Cross Control Contest (Whoo, CCC!) coming anytime soon. The pack featured good materials and the levels were well designed but the Cross Control Create (Whoo, CCC!) was an incredibly poorly implemented feature. That is the reason you don't see many serious CC levels: it is an utter pain in the *** to use, and also a bit of a hassle for most people to get working. That's not even including how few people actually have Vitas and all required components.

bonner123 is right. The CC create mode isn't well made (actually, it's just like regular create mode). I have been building in CC mode for a little while, and I can safely share my experience. You can either build on the Vita or PS3. You can use the Vitanator to create, but stuff like copying or moving to front layer can't be used on the PS3 with just a Vita. And if you only focus on the PS3 part, ignoring the Vita, the Vita will eventually enter sleep mode, and thus moving you back to your pod. So when I build, I try touching the Vita to keep it out of sleep mode. Connectivity is the issue here. And sometimes, when I ignore the Vita, it disconnects me, and I cannot connect to the PS3 because of Wi-Fi problems. Even playing levels in CC mode has connectivity problems.

So you can see why the Contest Crew are highly unlikely to make a Cross Controller contest. In fact, they even reject Cross Controller levels.

This is about LBPCentral contests, not LBW contests.

Another contest I would like to see is a cultural themed contest (I know we already had a time one). We can make Mexican-themed platformers to Chinese-themed mini-games for the contest.

True... I'd like to see one done well though. Like in the CC pack, I hate at times that the one with the Vita has so much to attempt as well as get his sackboy through the danger as well. There are some parts that are quite cool that both the PS3 and Vita have some cool things to do. I just have an issue where the Vita player has to do his tasks as well as the PS3 stuff making you juggle controllers... ugh. Even worse if you need to type at someone.

As far as contests.. I do like the themes, but maybe something not so limiting as a needed contraption in this past one. Still was a really cool idea, but might have limited the entries a bit.

What might be really cool is a revisit of the Piggy in the Middle contest that we had in the Beta way back when. Having a defined start and ending, then the creator fill in the middle. Some of the most creative stuff I have ever seen came out of that contest.

I have several ideas.
1. A Dark Ride Level - Not meaning scary, but indoors on a cart you can't get out of. Like a Roller coaster, but usually slower, and with more animatronics.
2. A Bounce Level - Using bouncy materials or bounce pads, a level where all safe ground MUST be bounced upon.
3. A No-Touch Level - I've only seen one author do this so far, but a level that plays itself, and you only have to start the level, and get to the end by doing nothing.

More CCC rantings!

The glaring problem of CCC is that if the Vita goes into sleep mode then it kicks you out of create mode entirely without saving your progress. That is **** poor design that should never have been implemented. If you could work on both independently it would have been fine, but it forces you to work on both simultaneously, which is utterly obnoxious unless you are creating with a friend. Sure, you can turn sleep mode off, but why should I have to? If I'm not working on the Vita side of things why should I just waste my battery life when I'm not using it? It's incredibly dumb and illogical.

Not to mention how limited the palette is on the Vita side of CCC. There is barely any diversity, which is incredibly disappointing. If there was a contest, levels wouldn't be distinct enough from each other unless you want a huge jarring dissonance between the Vita and PS3. A couple of creative things can be done, but very little overall.

This is getting a bit off-topic, but yeah. I don't see a CC contest coming anytime soon. Because of how poorly implemented it is no one really uses it, and as such there would be a bad turnout. With any luck it will be fixed, but we all know MM's / affiliate's track record with glitches and the like. I'd like to see a contest with a nice gameplay restriction, like the no floor contest. I firmly believe that the gameplay restriction contests yield better, more creative results.

1. and 3. have tons of examples throughout LBP1 and 2. Well, maybe not so much 1. but both are pretty similar.

2. I believe LBF or LBL did this at one point, and the turnout wasn't too bad even though it was a 24hr speed contest. It isn't a bad idea, and it'd be interesting to see this concept with better fleshed out levels.

I'm starting to think that if we ran the contest crew, it would be more than just choosing the theme. What about the prizes? I know the crown and LBPC pin are given to first place, but now I kinda see the crown lost its value. The crown leak issue, game sharing, and the fact where you can get a crown for sending fanart, there should be more than a crown. Perhaps Mm/SD can make rare materials/stickers/decorations and allow these as prizes for the top winners.

The crown may have lost value for some, but I for one am still going for it. I don't care that lots of people got it illegitimately, I'll know I got it the proper way. Like filling my pokedex.

I wouldn't mind if some of the LBP1 contests were repeated for LBP2/Vita. I was pretty terrible at creating back then but I think I could do a great 'One layer' level now.

This usually is different for me. When my Vita goes into sleep mode, my PS3 just says that it lost connection to PS3. Then I just exit sleep mode with my Vita and everything is back to normal. It hasn't quit me out of create mode once.

Also if anyone from Sumo Digital is reading this: shame on you, I had faith at one point. If LBP3 is like this then I see no reason for anyone to buy it. Just because level design is good doesn't mean bad design in other facets is excusable.

No extra comments, but I agree with you on all of what you said. I had the exact same experiences. Connectivity problems, limited battery, and lack of items, all of these will prevent a possible CC contest.

Another contest that the Contest Crew may not run is a Motion Controller contest. Just like Cross Controller levels, not everybody has a motion controller. And if you are going to build with just a motion controller and navigation controller, you won't be able to create at all. Not only that, but the Move Pack isn't in spotlight anymore.

You could create a level using a Wireless Controller and a Motion Controller. It allows that.

So back on topic...

LBPC11 should have a BACON theme. Make a level heavily involving bacon in some shape or form. Judging will be based upon the creative use of bacon, and bacon visuals (does it look crispy and tasty?). The sky is the limit, just make any level that somehow involves bacon. The more creative you are the better.

I'm not sure if that'll work. A level that is solidly made of one food item seems to be crazy. We could have one on any food in general, but just one? Not only that, but Kato is right. If we run this contest, then imagine how many TVs would be lost because of people eating their TVs.

I think my world culture idea and Tron idea sound great, especially the second one.

Got another idea.
How about we have a level which takes place in only one room? There can be any gameplay of any kind. The room must be seen in whole all the time, and any other things not in the room must not be gameplay oriented (menu, scoreboard, etc.). Sort of like Ladylyn's Cuboid, but with any type of gameplay with any number of players.

I haven't seen a recap of the precedent LBPC contests in this thread, so I made one:

LBPC11: Buddy Building! (help and be helped)
LBPC10: A Stitch in Time (time-travel gameplay)
LBPC9: Locomotion Commotion (all obstacles must be influenced by each other starting from a singular power source)
LBPC8: Aquatic Acceleration (intense fast gameplay underwater)
LBPC7: It's Showtime! (stage a show: circus, live concert, opera/theatre...)
LBPC6: A Quest for Glory (create an epic quest in four levels!)
LBPC5: The Dark side of Disney (make a dark and gritty reinterpretation of Disney's classics)
LBPC4: Sackscience! (tweak the laws of physics: gravity, time, magnetism, momentum, weight...)
LBPC3: Synched up! (Create a level where contraptions, lights and FX are synchronized to the soundtrack and sounds)
LBPC2: Multiplayer Mayhem (level that need at least two co-op or versus players to be completed)
LBPC1: The No-Floor Platformer (the ground is lava! Or poison! Or anything lethal... And safe zones are only for checkpoints.)

Most of these levels are gameplay-related. So, for the next one, why not a game where you control your surroundings because your character has a flaw? Like, a mystic wolf who calligraph bridges with her brush (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C5%8Ckami), or a blindperson manipulated by the gods (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?78293-Deus-Ex-Machina)to achieve his goal?
