View Full Version : Good grief!!

I'm posting this because I just ran across the topic in another thread that was only briefly mentioned and I thought it worthy of more attention. I'm placing it in the suggestion forum in hopes that it raises some awareness to others who may not fully understand the impact of negative rhetoric on our younger players' developing minds.

The following quote is taken from the previously mentioned thread.

and yea ive never good griefed anything.. but the first time I see a penis level Ill be all over it... wait... you know good griefing it, or whatever... nevermind...

My response is this...

I've GG'd about 5 or 6 levels so far. I've seen levels where they have characters referring to other cultures as "rag-heads" and other disgusting racist remarks that have been very deserving of being GG'd. The other night I was on and ran across several foul levels published by a player called nrhurley... I'm not afraid to share his name because he was kind enough to publish these levels in the first place... so it's not slander by any means on my part. Fact is... he had a couple of decent little levels that were worthy of checking out and only needed a little work to make them better, so it's unfortunate that he took the measures he did.

Obviously he had recently been modded on one or more of his levels as the titles of his levels were "LBP MODS ARE RACIST" and "THIS IS HOW THE MODS BANG US". The first level showed horrible KKK hoods, a burning cross, and a black person in a tree... and he wasn't climbing it! I was completely shocked to say the least, so I immediately GG'd the level and posted a reply asking if he was trying to get banned or if he was truly that ignorant. I almost immediately received a message in my inbox from him stating that if I didn't "get it" that I was the ignorant one. I replied saying that the mod system is not perfect yet, but that his content was completely inappropriate as this is a game for all ages and that I myself have young nieces and nephews who play, to which he replied "they can see worse out their front window". I then noticed that there were two others playing his game who wee also creating empty or disturbing levels aimed at the mods, as well as giving high rank stars and positive tags like "Brilliant or Braiiiins" to his levels. His "How the mods bang us" level involved a certain male organ connected to a piston aimed perfectly at a large pink profile of a man bent over. Apparently anger management and a couple of etiquette classes are needed for this angry little man. On top of this he and his two buddies were re-publishing the levels over and over in order to try and clog the servers, as there were probably 20 or so versions of the levels published.

What I can't understand is why people who act this way don't get permanently banned from using the Playstation Online features altogether. There's a lot to be said for the caliber of someone who posts inappropriate material like this, and I think we all need to be on the lookout for racism or slander of any kind in order to help protect our younger players from exposure to this kind of thinking and imagery.

I certainly hope anyone reading this will think twice before simply leaving a level you find offensive without using the Good Grief feature. I would hope even more that you would think about whether you find something funny might be offensive to someone else, so that they might not have to see it in the first place.

I'm all for freedom of speech but that doesn't mean you should speak freely.

The usage of the phrase "good grief!" is surprisingly accurate in some cases.

I haven't done much online level-surfing myself, but I have griefed a level when I came across it.

Wow i am lucky, i have not come across one like this (I even have the Share torphy so i have seen my share of levels). But yet again i usually only go to the most popular or highest rated. I am either doing that or working on my current project. Frankly, since I have never used it, i have nearly forgotten that it existed. Anyway, I hope these levels, get wiped off of the planet, and he gets banned from publising any levels.

Cheers!

I've checked out the good grief option, and I don't get how you get it, are you suppose to just take a picture of the level? Or that certain section with the innappropriate material, also I think they should add a "good grief" option in the start menu.

A lot of people rarely even press the select button, I know I've never used it before, other than for LBP, so having it in the starts menu would help as well.

I haven't ever used the GG, and I hope I never have to, but I've never found a game that bad, possibly because I do what RAINFIRE does, and play only popular levels.

Once you press the button you are asked if you are sure you want to commit to the process, as it's not something you just throw around as we all know. Then you will see the screen of the area of the game you are in and plan on GG'ing. There is a square reticle like the one you use to take pictures with and you can move it around the screen and zoom in or out on the area you are concerned about or the entire screen. Then it's just a matter of taking the pic, and then you are prompted for a reason through a TAG method giving you options like "Adult Content, Offensive, etc." There was one persons game in the past where I had to GG two or three separate areas of their level, because of recurring themes throughout that were inappropriate.

Anyways, it's easy peasy to do. I'm glad to hear that you folks haven't needed to use it, but it makes sense if your playing the most popular levels out there.

I've never come across such levels, it would be sad that people could make good levels but choose to make racist or offensive remarks.
I would have no hesitation in GGing a level I found offensive, thanks for the post for bringing it to peoples attention.

I dont tend to go on levels like that...

I might tell someone else to check it out (AND GRIEF IT) if it is bad, but I wouldnt go on any levels with that kind of title at all.

Wow.

What an idiot.

I personally haven't come across any levels like this, thankfully... but, I have used the Good Grief option when I came across a level called "heart me and my level and will heart you back" and another by the same person called "heart 4 heart." There was nothing in the levels... it was just there taking up space.

I classified it under the "Other" option so, I don't think the GG option is there just for lewd and racist levels... other levels should be reported, as well.

Keep the servers clean, in my opinion.

I once came across a level named "The nazi empire"
it was full of the nazi flag (dunno name) and at the end it was a picture of hitler doing a speech.

sad.

yeah its pretty bad really.. I mean the nazi flag (swastika) is a symbol of hatred... but there is a fine line it seems, like if seen in context I think a nazi flag would be acceptable.. A fun ww2 game or whatever. however a level that glorifies Hitler and the third reicht, endorses intolerance, or breeds racism, the holocaust or anything similar should be taken out.. in summation its ok for me to see a nazi flag, as long as Im shooting at whoevers holding it.

the swastika actually used to be a greek good luck symbol, untill hitler stole it like he did many other things.
I have never had to use the GG, and I'd like to keep it that way, though I won't hesitate if i need to.

I'm betting the moderators had more to do with that than him. ;)

As for the 911 level RockSauron.... that's just sick. I hope it wasn't up long enough for someone who had a personal loss in that tragedy to come across the level.

I'm glad to find like-minded people like you all here on the forums.

seriously though from what I remember... it was like jump on the button inside the squared out crappy excuse for a plane... a rocket will drag you across the ground (what the ground? yes the Ground!) into a stupid looking square peice of cardboard... little explosion... jump out walk right scoreboard...

If your going to do somthing this retarded, atleast make it good... (now drag the boxcutter into the cockpit) hmm.. I mean it would still be horribly offensive, and the DHS would be knocking on your door the next day... but still just because your an idiot is no excuse for making a mediocre product..

I haven't actually used the Good Grief! option yet, but if I find something that's super offensive and the creator just wants to offend/annoy people, I'll use the Good Grief! right away.

Doublethink ↓

I'm all for freedom of speech but that doesn't mean you should speak freely.

Lol, how can you have freedom of speech without being allowed to speak freely? Are you saying that free speech shouldn't be allowed but people should be told they can? That wouldn't be free.

Most people are in favor of freedom of speech—for themselves and other "correct" thinkers.

First I should like to point out the following direct quote from the PLAYSTATIONŽNETWORK TERMS OF SERVICE AND USER AGREEMENT

3. COMMUNITY CODE OF CONDUCT

You must adhere to the following rules of conduct, and also follow a reasonable, common-sense code of conduct. Users are required to take into consideration community standards and refrain from abusive or deceptive conduct, cheating, hacking, or other misuse of PSN. Rights of other players should be respected.

The violations that are prohibited include but are not limited to the following:
* You may not abuse or harass others, including but not limited to stalking behavior.
* You may not take any action, or upload, post, stream, or otherwise transmit any content, language, images or sounds in any forum, communication, public profile, or other publicly viewable areas or in the creation of any Online ID that SCEA, in its sole discretion, finds offensive, hateful, or vulgar. This includes but is not limited to, any content or communication that SCEA in its sole discretion deems racially, ethnically, religiously, or sexually offensive, libelous, defaming, threatening, bullying or stalking.

If you do some research you will find that there are clearly stated laws pertaining to limitations on freedom of speech and their affects on society, which limit and prohibit what you can and can not say. These laws carry lofty legal consequences and are there for all of our protection and to ensure equality in society and a fair quality of life.

This is not doublethink at all. I'm not going to go into this with you as either you clearly aren't mature enough, or simply don't understand the concept of this ideology at this point in time (or so it appears). Had you fully read and understood my post describing the content of the levels the person published, you would realize the severity of the sexually and racially explicit content and it's negative affects on other members of the PSN society. The very act of you questioning this implies to some degree that you are attempting to engage in a discussion that is clearly not warranted nor wanted on this forum. If you don't agree, I would encourage you to contact any staff member for clarification of this matter.

I would much prefer to keep things friendly on this forum. ;)

Cheers.

Obviously I'm for freedom of speech for anyone putting out their opinions that won't harm anyone else, but I didn't say anything directly about people being allowed to get away with going against the laws of the PSN terms of service and agreements. In my opinion, people should be allowed a maximum amount of ability to voice their oppinions while remaining within the laws of any online community.

If you do not have free speech then obviously that is one less freedom and at first I almost thought your post was promoting less freedom. I had already read the entire post and understand that it is a good thing to keep the balance right between freedom and protection, however I think that in the recent years, protection is becoming ever closer to control.

I can fully understand your ideaology behind a balance of freedom and protection (indirectly that was what you were promoting:)) and I did actually read more into what you were saying and apollogise for any more trouble that it caused you.

It's all good G-U_N_R. :)

It's often difficult to interperate what is being said on forums when there isn't a face and voice to try and "read" behind what's being said.

I apologize if my response seemed harsh. I wasn't trying to be a jerk about it, and I'm glad we can be amicable about this. I'm just worried, as topics such as this one tend to get out of control on forums, and before you know it other people are joining in and then things tend to get F.U.B.A.R. So that's why I'd just rather avoid this discussion all together. ;)

I will agree that the protection of other's rights does ride the line some times, and certainly poses a danger of moving from protectionism to control. I've seen clear examples here in Canada where the protection of one groups rights suddenly begins to infringe on the rights of others, and that's just wrong. We as a society need to be wary of this, and make sure our Governments and law makers don't set their own agenda's in motion.

Yikes!! Good for you. People that take the time to attempt to get around the word censor system should be at least given a temporary ban, if not a permanent one. Well, for the actual dirty words... not the silly ones that have dirty words contained within them.

I've only ever griefed one level and never saw it online again.
People are just ignorant thinking they can just get away with their inappropriate levels.
Maybe MM needs to make an adult version of LBP just for those imbeciles.
