View Full Version : The Sackmech Tournament!

The Comedian

well since the site contests forum has decided that it does not want me to start a thread there i have decided to make it here. This is going to be an unofficial contest hosted by me, The Comedian, that is going to take your designing and playing skills to the max! it is called the sackmech tournament and each contestant will create his own mech in part one and then use it to play against other contestants.I currently have no idea how this will be achieved any suggestions would be appreciated.:) if there is no way to do this the your mech will be judged on looks, accuracy, handling, and reliability. oh and how many awesome features it has:p

Basic Rules

1. It has to be fully functional and able to be piloted from the inside. (the control contraptions do not have to be on-board:))

2. It has to be completely original( you can use ideas from other people but not pre-made parts/mechs, for all you naughties out there;))

3. Oh and it has to be able to shoot something;)

4. The mech can not take up more than one third of the thermo or the battle arena level might become to complicated.

5. It must shoot the standard ammo which will be provided in my example level for you all.

6 It must shoot at the standard rate of fire which will be at a minimum of 1 shot per second.(you may make it shoot slower if you like:) but it's probably not a good idea;))

7. Your mech must contain a magnetic key switch colored blue so your mech can be defeated.

8. The maximum amount of emitters allowed for the weapons at once is 4

For the advanced creators!
if you want a challenge then you can make a fully functional walking mech which is far harder than just putting a box and a jet pack and then making a mech looking thing around the box:p for help on this subject look at gilgamesh's threads on bipedal motion (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=141766#post141766) thanks

Advanced Rules

1. it has to be able to go both backwards and forwards(for help go to gilgamesh because he knows a lot about bipedal motion theory)

2.it will be easier on you if your mech can jump

3. it must shoot the standard ammo at the standard rate (see basic rules for more info.)

other than those rules just have fun and let the creativity flow!

Tip: the more impressive the mech is the better chance it will have to win (if we go with the second form of judging)

when you've finished your mech pm me and publish it in a level that is locked or not (your choice:)).if the level is locked then send me the key via create mail to the psn: TH3C0M3D1AN. if this psn doesn't work the search for one of my levels and use the psn you find there(if this is necessary tell me and i will tell you the name of some of my levels so you can find them better)

I have not yet picked an official date for the end of part one due to the fact that there may not be enough interest shown in it at the beginning. so there's still plenty of time to join!:D

sounds fun.. you should include some more rules about like ammo though, if we have to battle them... because If mine shoots impact explosives really really fast and stuff It should be able to kill anyone from the whole map away

yeah i thought about that i think that i will provide an ammo type that it is required to shoot but the battling part is still under consideration it is probably not going to work so it might not matter.

"Well since the site contests forum has decided that it does not want me to start a thread there i have decided to make it here."

You have the start of a good contest brewing. I will try to keep tabs on the thread to see if I can participate. Its possible you might get more exposure if you put it in a different category. You can post it in the "contest" category. The "Site Contests" category is for the admins only I assume.

sorry but i have just realised that someone will probably make a mech which can just obliterate everything else like fire a nuke which instantly destroys everything

I've moved this over to the "Contests" section of the forum. Anyone can post a contest there, and I think that's what your aiming at.

The "Site Contests" can only have threads started by moderators and above, although anyone can post there. It's used for official contests organised by the site. The other contests section can be run by anyone, but is not given any official site support. You need to organise your own rules, judging and prizes.

Non-staff can organise, start and run site contests, but they are not able to post their own thread there. They make a thread organised somewhere else which a staff member then moves right away.

So... good luck with the contest. :)

Ammo should be set to something like paintballs (not ideal because not everyone has the MGS expansion pack) or perhaps impact explosives, but only a certain ammount at a time....or overall.
Also, with stage 2 the two mechs should be put in a "Battle areana" level and then the two players should attack each other inside their own mechs. A certain amount of unprotected brains or paint switches (again not ideal) should be on each mech so that it can be killed. That's the gist of the stage two.... or how I would have thought it should be. Tell me if you think that's a terrible idea or something :)

I was going to do a standard ammo type with a magnetic key and make everyone attach a magnetic lock to their mech with a radius of the mech's hight or something. The problem that I'm having with the battle part is not having the right mechs or getting the mechs there, it is coordinating the battling between the two players as in getting them both in the same level at the same time.

i figured that too and am requiring a standard ammo type which i will provide

Hey, that's a pretty interesting concept. It's going to be really though to organize though.

I have a few suggestions for the contest.

You should allow any kind of walkers (quads, tripeds, hexapods, millipedes, etc).

There should also be a maximum size for the walker, so that they can both easily fit on the same screen without one of the players dying because of being out of the screen.

You might also want to make a template level in the same way as aer0blue's Boss Rush contest. The battle area should have a camera zone to zoom out as much as possible, and the area should be small enough that both players can be at the edges of the area without dying (if possible).

You might also want to include some additional shareable objects within the template to use with the mechs also, such as a damage counter. I think you haven't specified on how exactly they would damage each-other and how they would be destroyed. It might be simpler to have paintinator switches and give away the paint glub to emit.

As for the actual fighting eachother bit... does online play work for everyone now? The last time I tried was with KAPBAM, and that caused my PS3 to freeze.

If it does, then it's simply a matter of putting the starting gate at the middle of the arena. I guess the first one to get to their walker first gets to fire first, even if the other hasn't gotten in yet.

if you need any help then i can help out im working on a series of vehicles like a simple vehicle which uses the dark matter box to show people how it works and how to do it , a battleship which is similar but fires stuff - for this demonstration a paintball.
and a hover car which needs more done to it so itsfull functional but it looks ugly because of the amount of smoke so im looking into emmitersto make it fly
and now im trying out a few mechs eg 4 legged 2 legged and even a 1 legged just for fun to see it hop around lol

If you really struggle on the legs then just make the legs stay in place and attach a few small wheels to each foot and make it roll but still look mechish

any more details then just say because this competition is very cool sounding, i might make a mech for it

TIPS: i will update when i have new ones
1, the larger the feet the harder it is to make but it will be more stable
2, more than 2 legs - hard to make more stability
3, flat feet - if you make round ones well your just stupid
4, small flaps can be made quite easily so when your standing still they will touch floor acting as bigger feet and when close enough to a MS,magnetic switch, they will lift up and when back down on floor come out- may not explain properly i will make a video tommorow
5, Equally balance head by not adding to much HUGE stuff to it, keep it simple like the starwars walkers-square shaped
6, Make it unique so it stands out
7, follow rules

more tips tommorow - im going to bed = its midnight

i have never actually tried to play with specific people online ever so i would have no idea and yes i will make all the required parts that have to be the same and provide them as soon as the examples are finished.

EDIT:there are no limitations on the number of legs your robot is flailing about but it must as gil said be contained in the template that i will also provide:)

if you need any more help then see gilgamesh's threads
PS. the walking part is not required you can make one like gevurah22/donkey show's if you struggle with the legs. i will provide an example of both:)

its always nice to have a more working mech though and if you make legs work properly then, quoting gilgamesh slightly - You should go work for japanese people and build real ones

he only said that if you can balance a mech using physics or gyro balancing not if you can make the legs work:)

but to make them work properly you would need it to be well balanced and need some knowledge of physics xD

not really you would need to know how to read and comprehend gilgamesh's balancing thread which is fairly simple.but whatever

ok i understand that but what about a 3 year old? probably wouldn't know what a mech is but still they cant understand complicated words like "The" and "That".

but anway i meant without using the rails and ballons etc.

i finnished my bounced - one legged, i had to build a brain ontop but i made wrong one so when it jumped it flipped over and destroyed itself. managed to fix it with ease just made body rounder so if it landed on head it just rolls over.

im also trying to make some escape pods to see how they would turn out for mechs.

well 3 year olds dont even know lbp exists so it doesn't matter
i wouldn't mind seeing your hoping mech i think it would be very funny:)
escape pods might be cool:)

i have a working two legged mech if someone needs an example...

Also it might be easier if you somehow collected the mechs, judged them and made an obstical course instead. the mech that completes it the fastest wins and the course includes challenge that test its manuverability, speed and acuracy.

Haha, I've got the stuff for the basic rules down.

tx4gNdHZZUI

- fires at a consistent rate
- takes battle damage, multiple areas of damage
- takes around 25% of the thermo
- etc, etc, etc.
- allows for close range combat as well

Of course this was made before the paintinator update so I could probably tighten it up and drop the thermo use a bit.

yeah i know i based the basic mech standards off of your level actually
