View Full Version : Improved / Replaced Pod!

The first thing that greets you on entering any LittleBigPlanet game is the humble abode we refer to as the Pod. Its nothing really special. Its a gateway to the menu, where you can traverse the imagosphere in search of levels, isolate yourself to your moon to build wonders, or summon your friends for an epic dance session. Whatever you fancy, the pod is where you make it happen!

But is the pod outdated? We have been stickering and decorating the same pod since the first LittleBigPlanet release. No new create add-ons have been included into it. No novel abilities. No new social capabilities. While the menu has been updated, the pod remains very similar to the original pod. Its nothing special in itself, but it has become a staple in every LBP game ever made, so obviously people have nostalgia about keeping the pod as-is (although players in the LBPK pod were restricted to sitting in place and spinning around endlessly).

Now, lets get rid of the nostalgia and push our creative limits. If Sumo were to "mess with the pod" and put out a new central station to begin the game, what would you want to see? Would you modify the pod? Would you remove the pod? Would you scrap the pod and replace it with something else?

:devious:

Here's my idea on this.

I think the pod has three main purposes: (1) It has to be a social gathering place capable of withstanding multiplayer interaction, (2) It has to be customizeable to reflect the personality / desires of the pod owner, and (3) It has to seamlessly provide a gateway into the LBP world and the main menus.

If we were to modify the pod, I think there should be a "downstairs" of the pod where people can gather and customize it. Here, you could place and make customized music. You would have a small thermometer enabling you to build a comfy sofa and seating arrangement. It would be a nice, cozy personal space where you wouldn't have to enter a level or the moon to hang out at.

If we were to replace the pod, I see something similar to the ModNation hub. Perhaps the theme would be a home planet. Players would have a home that they customize and build and decorate themselves, and the home opens up to a central hangout space where they can run into sacks from everywhere in the world, check news, chat, and show off your threads. Invite a few friends over to your house, and they can wander about the hub too! When you are ready to travel on an adventure, go to the top level of your house and rocket away into the stars with your friends by your side.

In any case, we could make the "pod" a lot cooler than what it is, and I think that would help increase the multiplayer focus of the game.

What are your ideas?

I have always dreamed of a bigger pod. I really hope Sumo puts it in the game.

I doubt any of the developers or fans, nor I could think of anything to replace the pod that we as fans would accept or agree with as a replacement that works, an improvement is quite difficult for something that hasn't change because it can't really be improved upon. Maybe it could have more features for physical appearance such as to decorate the inside and outside with a full 360 degree view to allow for every face of the object to be decorated, enable players to move on every layer of the pod or allow for complete freedom of movement as if there weren't layers... It's really difficult to come up with ideas within a short time period that could work but these are my opinions and I think most players believe the pod if fine in it's current condition.

Now to remove the pod. The pod itself gives LittleBigPlanet something unique from any other game, adding to what makes LittleBigPlanet LittleBigPlanet. I'd say the pod is a traditional part of LittleBigPlanet, as if in comparison the pod is insignificant to create mode but to remove create mode would to remove an essential part of the game, I think the same would be of the pod. Imagine the pod were to be remove and players were just throw into a lobby with a user interface. The lack of freedom that the pod provides, the inability to ponder around impatiently waiting for a level to load whilst slapping Sacklings is unconventional. It would take from the experience of hear Stephen Fry voice and slowly having the camera pan into the pod where we are told what we already know but his voice and the entire main menu including the pod provides a feeling of nostalgia reminding you of the first time you were introduced to the pod in the most previous LittleBigPlanet game creating a chain reaction of you remembering all your experiences of the past games. I think it should say, now and in the coming years if there will be any more LittleBigPlanet games.

Your idea. I don't think having an entire house in the pod is that great. I would never utilize any space other than the room I'm provided near the controller. Most of my time is spent in create mode and that is where I invite my friends. I spend very little and limited time in the pod and remains to cease any decorations. I think I turned the entire thing blue, but who knows?

If I were to pick one change I would change the choice for it to be changed. It's perfect as it is now. It should remain the way it is now. And to change it would be a violation or my rights! You'll be hearing from my solicitor! :) Now I'm off to play solitaire or maybe checkers or browse my steam library in bid to find a game because I seem to buy, install and never play them, farewell!

I'm satisfied with it's current size though a slight widening wouldn't impact as a change to the pod entirely that much, note on the side and completely off topic I find you signature very amusing. Made me laugh for a few seconds upon inspecting it. Did you create it?

I know that there are a lot of people that simply play LBP for the moon. I used to be one of them. Creating was a really good way for me to vent and explore my own imagination.

I started playing a lot with my nephews, and that is when I realized how powerful the pod really is. Some people spend all of their time playing only in the pod with each other. Others reside to the pod to have chats because it is more private (and the connection in pod is usually better than on the moon or in levels).

I know the nostalgia and cost are the biggest deterrents to having any changes made to the home space, but I just thought it would be fun to play with ideas. We are a creative community, fueled by dreams after all ;)

I'm hoping the Pod will utilize all 16 layers! Or maybe less, lol.

Personally I think the pod is good as is, but if were to change this then I would be fine with this ideas:

Having a huge pod like that would be actually awesome =P

I wonder if you can play as any of the characters in the pod...

I did the pod glitch on LBP1 and it was really fun!
They could make the pod slightly bigger and restrict what you use and where you place it and it would be fine.

I feel like you're going to be able to do that.

I think either that or create mode we should have free reign to switch characters.

If I'm going to make a guess, I'd say L1 will be a button used to toggle characters (or toggle toggle). It's either that or the popit, but that would feel a bit weird. I just wonder how characters would transfer from pod to level. Does it switch to the default character or only switch if that character isn't available?

The multiple characters is a whole mess of confusion for me too.

Maybe out side of the play level we'll have a button in our popit where we can select our character. Or maybe buy pressing start or using the touch pad... I wish we could find that information early...

Maybe we'll find out at Gamescom (hopefully).

sadly I think the pod will be the same, this is because if you look at the end of the E3 demo, you will see that they blast off in the familiar looking pod that we have come to know, and so my guess is that it will be very similar to what it is now

You use L1 to toggle Toggles size. Im guessing Sackboy is the only one available in pod.:)

I want the pod to stay as it is, but more capabilities. A larger pod would indeed be cool, and having creation posibilities without using glitches would be amazing.

What I want is the ability to also play music IN the pod, and when you're in the menu, maybe if you have the Platinum Trophy for LBP1 and LBP2, you can have their Pod themes be an option when navigating the menu. I'd get the LBP1 Platinum Trophy just for that...
