Hey, I seriously doubt that it is the "Second best level in lbp history" and people are going to jump down your throat for that. Can you tell us a little bit about the level?

johndizzle888

it is the second best level in lbp history and thats all i can tell you, it really doesn't have a story line its just a level. so go out and play it ok and see for yourself its off the hook

No, I don't feel like playing it until you show me some pictures or a video... It's pretty ignorant to call your level "the second best in history", and for that reason, I won't play it. And you double-posted.

I guess they don't fit with your humor style. Hyperboling much anyways?

Also, the best levels in the history of LBP obviously are mines to begin with. :p

You know what? I'm going to go ahead and play this tonight - EVEN though there is no explanation, pictures.... or anything.

However, I have to agree with RangerZero - this better be darned good to beat "Sack's in the city". Or "Splat Invaders Saga" for that matter.... or "The Legion".... or "The Bearer".... or "Abyss!"...

but you know? When you say it's the 2nd best level... be prepared for critisism....

OK.... this is obviously his sad way to get cheap plays on his level. So not even out of curiosity should anyone play his level till he gives reason for his claims........ If i'm wrong then i'll play it ^^

The Bearer wasn't THAT good. I've always been a huge LOTR fan, and the Bearer IS stunningly beautiful but with a fun factor of 0. You want to play a fun level, try MAZED AND CONFUSED II : Still Spinning. It's an entire level rotating. IMO extremely fun (compared to the Bearer, at least);)

Fun is subjective..... even "best" level is subjective. I found "The Bearer" series to be fun in that it gave me a story to play through - and perfectly emulated the ambience of the story.

Whereas "Splat Invaders Saga" is fun because it has incredible twitch action.

Reading a book can be fun, and playing football can be fun - obviously a different kind of fun.

I'm going to play this particular level in this thread - HOPING there is some kind of punchline behind it.

However, The Bearer seems interesting enough to make you react ;)
As Ccubbage said, fun is subjective... It is certainly not the kind of level you love...But the three levels were spotlighted...

Btw, thank you Ccubbage for the kind words ;)

No problem Takelow! I've played the Bearer series all the way through several times and enjoyed myself every time.

Now, back to THIS level:

Okay, I played it. Or at least - I played the first room. I honestly (and this isn't to be mean - I think virtually everyone on this site who knows me knows I'm a pretty objective person) just couldn't get past the first room without a lot of frustration.

The first thing I noticed in the first area was the aesthetics were lacking. I went ahead and hit the button like it asked me to, which raised the stairs. I jumped over the top, pulled the switch, jumped down and started the "hanging" part. Then I fell into gas and died. Did this numerous times. I was REALLY trying, but I just couldn't get past this area.

Take it for what you will....

johndizzle888
02-24-2009, 06:38 AM
dang thats too bad you didn't make it past the gas parts because the obstacles after that are pretty cool. the gas part isn't even that hard. please try to get farther in the level

@johndizzle888

Don't take this the wrong way, but maybe you should listen to CCubbage's feedback, and change the first section.

I mean, he even told you he was actually TRYING, something much be wrong, either it's wayyyy too hard for the first room, or it's impossible.

Levels should always rise up in difficulty, it should start easy, then gradually get harder.

johndizzle888
02-24-2009, 06:55 AM
the first section is very easy, and its 100 percent possible. people have beat my level already, its been tested many times. yes he was trying but maybe he's not skilled when it comes to obstacles because he plays more of the "eye candy" levels that just require that you jump around a level that is appeasing to the eye. you should give it a try whale and leave feedback

Dude, it isn't the second best level. I haven't played it, but just by calling it that you've pretty much put me off your levels completely. I'm sorry dude, I think you ought to listen to some advice.

From that name, I kind of doubt you will get many plays. Perhaps name it something closer to the topic? I haven't played the level because I've been put off already.

Yet another thing is that you shouldn't really tell someone 'they don't have the skills' after they've took the time to play your level and give the advice. You should take it into consideration and then I'm fairly sure you'd get a few more plays.

Sorry for sounding a bit mean there, but I seriously think you ought to listen to this post.

I agree to most people here, and I'm not gonna play. Someone calling his level like this will not likely take feedback nicely. You might wanna listen to some people here, some are pretty succesfull and create great levels.

It can't ever be the second best, obviously that's either Jack McSetback I or II, depending on taste, the absolute best is the other one ofcourse! At least until Ninja finishes his FredMcDidntWorkwell level ;).

Offcourse I'm spoofing here but stuff like that is completely subjective. One can call a level good objectively but "the best" or anything like that is truly dependent on taste, or mood even.

I was wondering this also. Maybe his first level? :) But then that would suggest his skills as a level creator are getting worse and judging by the ego I doubt that is the case.

Ah, I know he must be talking about my level "Super Awsomesauce Xtreme Ramp 7". That quite clearly IS the best level in the world! ;)

You shouldn't take him seriously. You can see he's the "yo dawg" type that really think he's cool enough to even have "dizzle" in is username and find it funny to call his level "the second best".
It's clear there's nothing serious anywhere. (Not saying it's not annoying though).

Suppose I'm always conscious when I'm talking about people who play LittleBigPlanet.

Generally, people who have titles for their levels like this are rather young, so I don't really want to hurt their feelings or whatever ^^

Yeah.

I think we're giving this guy WAY too much attention.

And by the way, I'm not an "eye candy" type gamer. I've been playing games for 30 years, used to be a professional game designer, and have beat some of the toughest games in LBP. In fact, I have a reputation for fully pushing through levels regardless of difficulty (in fact, many great creators send me their levels first for feedback before release).

However, I have to have a REASON to try to complete a difficult level. For instance, if the level looks like Dimo1138's RoboRampage X, I'm going to finish it. It looks well designed, the layout is difficult but makes sense.

The first area in the room was unattractive, and it didn't make a lot of sense when I attempted it. I'm sure it was possible to finish, but I just didn't WANT to...... this is the reaction you will get from most players.

I was just going to say, Ccub... You were super helpful to me, giving me good advice on areas in my levels that everyone said was too hard (even the good people) and you wouldn't complain about them.

And you are right... Designers always think sections are easy, because they know what they are trying to do...

But the only way you can get your levels to be good is by listening to people. I scrapped the entire ending of a level to completely re-design it because of good feedback from people.

And the level is way better now because of it.

I am getting better at designing because of the people who play it, not good because only the best people can play it.

This level reminds me of a bad NES game. If there is too much unpredictability, then it's terrible. That's all I have to say about this one. I'm not a gambler, and that room with the dissolving walls that approach you was really annoying because of that. Everything else: Glitched. It's likely you can only do it once, and every time after that, it's either glitchy or something else.

tried it got bored before i even got to the gas. but i thought *maybe it'll get better* but to be honest it just bored me...
i actually though i would rather see a picture taking level which is only benefitial because i get some cool pictures... that i will never use...
and you calling it " The second best level in LBP history" whats the best your first one? yeah sure... you havnt seen 218 by OCK or azure palace(sorry not got the name of this creator but he/she is a great level creator) or The Heavy metal mullet planet tribute- by Leather-Monkeys have you? in my mind they were 3(4 kinda because of 2 parts) of the best levels i've ever played.
So heres some tips:
Change the Name ASAP or you will get lots of VERY VERY Negative comments.
Rethink the start.
add more things that make it seem exciting, its just not doing it for me as it currently is...
try add some eye candy...

and from what i've seen so far i would rebuild alot of it.

sorry for such negative comments but by naming it that and saying that CCubbage must be bad at levels then your just trying to get negative comments...

Hey John,

I played your level, and got to the bit with the cushions attached to a pole that go up and down over some electric blob things. Um - I declined the offer to replay.

The main issue with this level is that it is totally random, there's no solid aesthetic quality to the build and there are some rough edges, which on it's own would be forgivable, but allied with obstacles that have no relation to each other (and are basically just a series of electrified motor and piston shapes) there's no reason to push on to the end.

There is a difference between challenging and annoying. Levels should have changes of pace, and different objectives - the only objectives that I could discern were 'avoid electric hazards at speed', which wouldn't be so bad if the timing of the obstacles and hazards were harmonic rather than random.

Because every thing's jumping, spinning and going up and down at the same speed - very fast - and there's no real variation in the background or objectives it plays like white noise, and the challenges aren't satisfying when you beat them.

Imagine the result of a group of musicians all playing every note at the same volume and same tempo non-stop (you'd have modern jazz - I kid), it would be impossible to distinguish one instrument from the next.

Try mixing up the speeds on your obstacles, and linking obstacles together in clever ways - if you do that then even if it is difficult people would be compelled to persevere to the finish.

Good luck with your LBP builds in the future, and try not to post 'sensationalist' thread topics to get peoples attention - there's no need. If you play other peoples levels and post helpful feedback, they'll play yours in return and give advice and assistance when you need it. Not to mention the fact that if you play their levels you'll realise that they know what they're talking about...

i put magic mouths before every obstacle so you should know what to do. and this level doesn't have to make sense. my level does not tell a story or anything they are obstacles that you have to beat to get to the end. and boogaloo i am talking about my second level "chaotic fantasies" not my first level. i made a separate thread for my first level.

Boogaloo
02-25-2009, 01:54 AM
Oops, my bad...

Okay then - to start with, it's better than your first level. There are some ideas that are verging on pretty good. The little house that you have to avoid the gas in for example - though it would be more satisfying with a three-way switch so that you could control the direction, and then you could make the puzzle a little more complex.

The section after that suffers a bit though. In my opinion, overhead grabbing isn't a good way to move quickly - it's awkward and not reliable. It would be better if that section were a bit shorter, maybe avoid three gas obstacles, but it was frustrating to keep dying at the last hurdle because I didn't grip quickly enough - and waiting for the bar to drop down after each failed attempt made it more so.

The light puzzle wasn't a bad idea - though, again, it could do with being three lights instead of six. I died twice before I knew what was happening and then sort of fluked my way through. Maybe you could show what the lights mean beforehand - press a colour-coded button to emit a sign showing the shape (a button for each light), and then progress down a tunnel to react to each light in turn.

There was an odd section of invisible antimatter - I'm not sure what that was about, I just wiggled and jumped my way through it.

The puzzle with the moving platforms and poison gas at the start is pretty awkward - it relies on the dreaded overhead gripping technique, and there doesn't seem to be a pattern to the platforms, and I got killed by wispy strands of gas that I couldn't see several times. Take a look at the similar section of The Dancer's Court in the main levels - it has smooth movement and pinpoint timing, and get's more difficult as you go down.

...and this level doesn't have to make sense. my level does not tell a story or anything they are obstacles that you have to beat to get to the end...

What he meant was that there's no pattern or synergy between the objectives, not that your level needs a narrative. Levels should have a flow to them - for a perfect example check out 'Simplexity' by Rayvolution - there's no story there at all - but everything makes 'sense'. And it'll give you a bit of perspective as far as best levels are concerned, lol.

Overall I think you're going in the right direction. The visuals are better, still a bit mix 'n match but with more attention paid to spaces, and the objectives are more diverse, which is good.

johndizzle888
02-25-2009, 02:40 AM
i think the part with the lights is the best part, i thought that was very unique. a lot of my obstacles are very original. did you get to the last obstacle?? i thought that one was pretty awesome as well.

what are you talking about dobi?

What he's saying is...

You don't take any advice into consideration. You just ignore the fact that the majority of the people here can't pass a certain section, don't like your aesthetics, or stuff like that, and you don't feel like changing anything. You believe your level is perfect as it is and doesn't need any change.

So, yeah. That's what I think he's trying to say, I hope I didn't come off as being rude.

dobi6
02-25-2009, 03:45 PM
Thanks Whaaaaale...

Yep... That about sums up what I was trying to say...

I think any level, no matter how good, can stand for some good constructive criticism to make it a better level - even one with a solid 5-star rating from 100 people.

And I can just about guarantee that someone with that same 5-star rating appreciates every time someone gives them a good idea or a different take on their design.

After all, isn't that what the Level Showcase and F4F is about? - so we can get ideas from other people and give them back...

Dizzle, did you play any of Boogaloo's levels and offer him any good insight or props?

Secondly, I (and everyone else) tried to help you out by giving you honest feedback and suggestions on how to improve your stuff, but apparently your lack of ambition just leads you to doing this lame attempt at promoting an undoubtedly terrible level. This thread is really just out of hand.

johnd: obviously calling your level "second best" is insulting many creators who spend weeks testing and improving their level based off of the feedback they get here. For you to reject that same feedback - jokingly or not - is very immature.

Everyone else: you guys should have stopped replying a long time ago. If this really bothers many of you, then why validate his statements by bumping his thread for him?
