Would this be too much?

Grouping shapes and things you have made, rather than having to glue everything together?

Would also include moving objects, so if a moving object is grouped with another, it's not 'glue-stuck'.

Would also make selecting slightly easier on a massive scale since it grabs everything and then you can move all the intricate objects without accidentally highlighting something else that you didn't mean to.

Sounds like that could be useful, though potentially confusing if left unchecked by the creator. One thing I would like to add to the idea is being able to select multiple objects through clicking them, rather than just through dragging a box around them. You can already do this when capturing objects (R2 + X), so I don't see--save perhaps for lack of free buttons--why this couldn't be done with normal object selection as well.

Yeah. I thought it could get confusing, hence the too much bit. It would be nice to have for a quick selection if you had a lot of things in one level, and then I was thinking of sub-groups in the bigger groups. Pretty much like layer folders in an art program or groups in a 3D program. Buuuuut, that could definitely become even more confusing. Then again, like those programs, the creators tend to know what groups are what, assuming there was a drop down in LBP3 so you could choose the groups.

Speaking of drop downs, I do hope they add one for your own moon so you don't lose where the crater is. Unless there is one and I've never noticed it! If there is, I would definitely like to know!

And the R2+X selecting does take a while when there are a lot of things in the level. But maybe you could use it to select the stuff, then Square or something, to open a option to name the group.

Mostly I was thinking that you might group a bunch of objects together and then move them, but you can't because one part of the group is stuck behind something or other, and then you'd spend twenty minutes trying to find it.

This works perfectly in lbpk. You can make complex moving parts and group/ungroup them together to make some great motorised props.. It would make sense to take this really useful and simple yet seriously effective aspect from karting ( along with some other bits and bobs ) and surely very easy to implement.
