Dude.... I played the first level in this series - this ROCKS! You have a LOT of custom content in here, the visuals are impeccable!

I absolutely loved the beginning. Immediately it screamed "Quality!".

You used many elements in here really creatively - I loved the flag on fire. Now, a little past this when the bridge "was out", minor thing: Maybe you could see if you could adjust the camera angle here. I didn't see where to jump to the first time and died. But if the camera was panned out just a TINY bit, it would be nicer.

Door to castle - I loved the puzzle of getting the bomb and dropping it on the material to have the door to the castle open, however (and I don't know if you intended this) - you can cheat and just squeeze down between the door to the castle and the wall and get through without using the bomb. I went back and used the bomb anyway, but it's up to you whether you want to fix this little cheat.

LOVED the part where you see the dragon outside the window and end up falling inside (also loved the clock at the top of the clock tower - very well done).

You know, the only thing that made me a little sad on this level is seeing a 3 star rating - it really shows that the ratings are messed up and young kids that shouldn't be rating and probably can't finish your level are causing problems...

I would love if you checked out my "Splat Invaders II: The Caverns of Splat" (PSN: CuzFeeshe)

Prepare for a wall of text.

---------------------

Hey Zwollie, i've been playing trough both chapters, and here's what i think:

-- Chapter 1 --
Pros:
- The cinematic intro was amazing :D It's always good to have an intro like that, but you've done an amazing job.
- The characters look really good. I like the floating electric ball :D
- The explosives storage was cool. Everybody likes explosions..
- The witty comments were fun. It's alot better than a serious story. (Well, in my opinion it is)
- The clocktower part was cool. ANd the gears on the background were some nice touches. But there's also a con related to this.
- The slide into the dragon's belly was cool.

Cons:
- The dissolvable slide right at the beginning, was quite ugly.. First of all, dissolvable material is ugly. Second, the slide itself was quite an ugly shape. I know you wanted something that could disappear, but you can also achieve this by hooking a Sensor Switch, to a brain. That way you can still make a nice looking, stone (or other material) slide.
- Right after the "Surprise surprise, the gate mechanism wont budge" part, there's a visible emitter that spawns the bombs. Kinda ugly
- There's a section where you can get 3 objects real quick. First is the king (Under the "oh it's getting hotter, we're closer to our death" comment, then going up there's the Crash bandicoot one and a .. green snake..? Anyway, if you go to the right, up the bridge. You can clearly see dark matter at the lower left corner.
- The green snake thing i mentioned, which is on the background when you walk on the bridge, is one layer thick. This means you can jump up his tail, and then fall down to the bottom of the level. Even though you're not stuck there (you made fire down there) it's still a bit weird.
- The gears on the background, at the top of the clocktower. If you let go of the sponge on a winch, you can stand on top of these gears. A thin layer of glass would be appreciated. But it might be a bit ugly :S

Misc:
- Uhm.. a Crash Bandicoot object..? :O
- You must like yourself :D There's pictures of you everywhere.
- "only you could get INSIDE a dragon". Then why is he in here aswell? XD

-- Chapter 2 --
Pros:
- You kept the intro :D Good stuff. Also, if you walk to the left there's an altar which gives you the key to Chapter 1. Nice looking altar ;)
- Did you change Oswald's looks? He didn't spin in the first part.
- I liked how you used the exact catapult from the MGS levels :P And the ladder was really cool. I loved the skulls on the spinning wheels.
- WOW! That golden dragon altar was insane!!! (The little secret was well hidden too.)
- The dragont okens are well hidden, and add some replay value.

Cons:
- Even though the intro is cool, it's a bit odd that you're not inside the dragon anymore.
- Never mind. I'm sorry.. should've looked better.
- The magic mouth saying "Only those who pray to the gold dragon..." is visible. Uncool... Walls can't talk.
- Quite a big con here, you have a grab switch on the Golden dragon altar, that raises the.. wall thingy. BUT! You should make this a permanent switch. As soon as you grab the altar, you get the message "Acces Granted". I thought i did indeed clear the exit, and found out the wall was only slightly open. Had to walk back and hold it for a few more seconds. Even though the camera angle shows the door.. I didn't see it :P
- MAJOR con! After sliding both dragon statues in their right places. There was this elevator thingy, which i could go in. I pulled the switch, and the elevator lowered WITHOUT ME! I got back up the normal place. ANd the elvator was now down.. Had to restart the level here.

Misc:
- Was it intended that the last painting in the "Previously on" section had a magic mouth saying "*******************" ?
- Squishy, pink, bleeping objects inside the dragon? What's going on... XD
- What the.. I pulled a switch, it emitted 3 bombs coming out of the dragon. Then i walked inside the dragon's mouth, heard a sound as if you've achieved something.. But it was a dead end.
- Firmly held down the switch of the elevator this time.
- Found 6/8 dragon tokens. But i saw the one during the boat ride.. I jumped up to the stones, but the game didn't auto-switch layers...

Overall, 2 amazing levels! ANd you've definately learned from the first one. THe overall quality of the second level was way higher! Looking forward to part 3.

Thanks CCUBAGE for the nice comments!!
I'm going to try your levels the first chance I get. :p

I am very aware of the issues the first level has but decided not to alter it any further.
For nostalgic reasons I guess. :)
As I (hopefully) improve my creative skills, I want to be able to look back on all my previous levels and see how I started out.:)

First of all, thanks for the review T.T.T.
A lot of useful information for me as a creator, keep up the good work!!

Comments on Chapter I

Prepare for a wall of text.

I know, I know :p

The thing is, the intro was added later on and I couldn't create anything nicer without overheating the level!! Sad fact but I can live with it.

- The green snake thing i mentioned, which is on the background when you walk on the bridge, is one layer thick. This means you can jump up his tail, and then fall down to the bottom of the level. Even though you're not stuck there (you made fire down there) it's still a bit weird.

Yep, The're should be an easter egg down there mocking that very notion.

Uhm.. a Crash Bandicoot object..? :O

I hate the Crash Bandicoot of today but looooooove the Crash of old.
Put in there for all the nostalgic souls out there.

Comments on Chapter II

- The magic mouth saying "Only those who pray to the gold dragon..." is visible. Uncool... Walls can't talk.
-MAJOR con! After sliding both dragon statues in their right places. There was this elevator thingy, which i could go in. I pulled the switch, and the elevator lowered WITHOUT ME! I got back up the normal place. ANd the elvator was now down.. Had to restart the level here.

Not aware of that, will fix EDIT: FIXED visible mouth

- Was it intended that the last painting in the "Previously on" section had a magic mouth saying "*******************" ?
- Squishy, pink, bleeping objects inside the dragon? What's going on... XD
- What the.. I pulled a switch, it emitted 3 bombs coming out of the dragon. Then i walked inside the dragon's mouth, heard a sound as if you've achieved something.. But it was a dead end.

- No, not intended, it censors the word happened.
Will fix that. EDIT: FIXED
- It's colon.....stuff? :p:p:p
- Used to be a hidden item there, removed that and an entire 2x-section because of overheating. Seems I forgot to remove the soundobject. EDIT: FIXED, added some bubbles when you reach the dragons head

just played your two stages. yay they were fun. you definately could tell you got the hang for your style in the 2nd stage.

I loved the coin aspect. more stages need stuff like that. although I missed one I think...despite getting full item accomplishment, one of the holes wasnt open. the 6th one. is it suppose to open?

also your third stage (whatever it is) was locked. is there a key i missed or is it locked cause it isnt done yet?

Glad you liked it Laharl.

8 holes, 8 dragontokens.
Not all of them hold pricebubbles, some just hold scorebubbles.
So you can get full item accomplishment without finding all of them.

also your third stage (whatever it is) was locked. is there a key i missed or is it locked cause it isnt done yet?

It's no way near finished, I just published what I have to test with friends, etc...

I just watched my son play 1 & 2 back-to-back. I was eating and taking notes. He seemed to enjoy them, and I did as well.

Some folks here get wrapped around the axle about using MM's objects, but I thought you integrated them well and used them in interesting ways.

Episode 1

+

Overall look and polish
By Grohan's toe jam, I loved the humor
The dragons tail was very cool
Great ending. Left me anticipating the innards of the dragon (which I never really got, but more on that later)

-

Visible bomb emitter
Random prizes, mostly just stuff I'll have to delete. (Crash Bandicoot sticker? Really?)
Small stairs. The collision detection in LBP is suspect sometimes. Folks should make bigger stairs.
Had to self-destruct once. If you fall off of the lifts in the area with the gears, you fall behind the level and can't get out.

Episode 2

+

Again, overall look and polish
Intro was kind of cool with the recap
Again, the humor
Rear exit with sound effects got a laugh out of the boy
Dragon boat was very cool
Good puzzles

-

I was pretty let down that there wasn't more time in the dragon
It always bugs me when people put platforms at different depths for no other reason than that they can
"crystals to its rightfull place" should be "crystals to their rightful places
escape plans is two words, but that may have been intended as humor based on the next line

Overall, great levels. Hearted both and look forward to the third!

Edit to ask: Who was the sidekick?

Thanks for the comments frizby, glad you and your son enjoyed them!!

Random prizes, mostly just stuff I'll have to delete. (Crash Bandicoot sticker? Really?)

Yes, I know :)
That's why I used the dragon-tokens in the 2nd level.
You choose for yourself at the end if you actually want the pricebubbles or not.
Chapter I was my first lvl and I am very aware of my mistakes, but I do think the prices in chapter II are more valuable.

I was pretty let down that there wasn't more time in the dragon
It always bugs me when people put platforms at different depths for no other reason than that they can
"crystals to its rightfull place" should be "crystals to their rightful places

* Yeah, it was going to be an entire lvl inside the dragon at one point, things change.... :)
* Its not because I can, it was just to add some depth to that part of the lvl.
* Oops, my mistake EDIT: I fixed my grammatical error :)
And I would change escapeplans to escape plans but I can't add a single letter or space to that sentence anymore.

PS: The sidekick is called Oswald

Nice opening. Love the recap of the story so far.
lava flow is a good effect.
Took me a while before i realised you went up with the stones.
THe overall look of the level is really polished.
I also played the 1st chapter which I enjoyed more there was more gameplay and the side kick had funnier lines. Both levels 4 * and hearted.
Are we ever going to fight the dragon?

Took me a while before i realised you went up with the stones.
Are we ever going to fight the dragon?

* Yeah, I figured it was best not to explain the puzzles in this level, perhaps there is a little searching involved but I didnt want to make the puzzles too obvious.
That's also the reason why Oswald, the sidekick, is missing through most of the lvl.
* Perhaps....in chapter 12 :p

I just played part 1. A good level, for sure.. I was not blown away, but it was solid. I was kinda disappointed by the end and its lack of somekind of gameplay climax.

The dragon tail was cool.

Overall I would prefer some more originality in terms of gameplay, and a harder challenge.

I'll play part 2 later.

Alright man, i played through both your first sir sackboy, and then this one...

This one blew me away, the first one was cool, but this one rocked my socks. I didnt run into any bugs, or anything broken, all in all it was a great level!

the dragons on the bannisters, and the boat thing at the end, and everywhere in the level looked great and worked well with the overall theme (of course)

The gameplay was well spaced, and well paced. no spot was incredibly difficult, but you gave an even challenge throughout, with no spot being boring at all.

This level was well polished with great visuals, awesome dialogue, and a neat storyline. (although my wife says sir sackboy looks like Shakespeare...)

I honestly cannot wait for sackboy 3! this level was one of the most enjoyable levels i've played yet!

Zwollie
03-30-2009, 04:11 PM
Thanks for the kind words TJapan!!
And it is in fact Shakespeare who looks like Sir Sackboy :)

Chapter 3 is coming, I've got all of it drawn out on paper (a first for me) and the lvl itself is about 40% ready.
The creation has been a little delayed though, I'm waiting until the Cornish Yarg update is released.

Only now I noticed that you also created Hungry, Hungry, Capybara wich I absolutely loved.
That waterfall scene with the branch breaking is one of my favourite LBP-moments.

You know, nothing beats a level creator who improves with each and every creation. Whilst the first and original chapter was unequivocally impressive, the next chapter after that raised the bar by miles. It was simply outstanding, and no that is not an exaggeration by any means. Everything from the design of your two levels, the various elements that you have used (some of which you have recently introduced in chapter II) and the large replay value makes this series truly and utterly brilliant, I do not have a single problem with it. Keep up the great work Z!

Just discovered these today.

Can only really echo what others have said. If you`re not ging to revisit the first one, I shall save my thought, other than to say, it was good.

The second one is phenomenal though. It`s almost the perfect level. Enjoyable, entertaining, challenging. Not one did I get stuck on background or fought with the controls because of a badly placed camer angle.

Absolutely brilliant. 5 Stars and a heart from me, if you hadn`t already worked that out.

One thing though, you mispelled 'companion' at the start of the level.

* As I said before, I won't be revisiting the first chapter but...I might do an entire remake at one point while still keeping the original version available. Believe me, I don't like my first level.

* Woops, seems I need to correct another grammatical error. Consider it done!!

I was the same with my very first level. So many things I'd added that over time I really got to dislike. Remade it the other day in no time at all. Feels like a weight off my chest!

Just finished both parts of your Sackboy series Zwollie. I found the first part to be fun, but it felt hampered by a few rough areas, which many posters have already pointed out. However, the second part was fantastic from beginning to end! I loved the way you recapped the story with the pictures, I loved the environments, and I loved the gameplay! Great job and I'm looking forward to part 3.

Boy have I been missing out!

I just got to both of your levels today and just LOVED them. You had me at "dragon". *sigh*

Seriously - beautiful designs, fantastic lighting, great platforming, nice hidden secrets in part 2, great character development and story. What's not to love!

I especially want to mention a few things that you've done exceptionally well. I adore your reluctant acerbic sidekick character! Really great writing on your part to get his personality across. The dragon design is fantastic (inside and out!) The camera angles when you change them are dramatic and make perfect sense to me. Your "sets" are beautiful and intricate and lit extremely well. Your "secrets" including stickers, coins and hidden areas are brilliant in part 2.

I am so looking forward to part 3 and if you don't see feedback from me early on that one - come kick my tush because I wish I'd have played these other 2 earlier!

(On a technical note - the elevator in part 2 where the glass dragon sculptures are - can you raise the elevator a hair above the level of the floor in front of it? 2 player seems to kick the player not holding the sponge onto the floor when the elevator descends or if you let go of the sponge in 1 player the elevator drops and you have no way of getting down to that level - so you're stuck)

5 stars for both - hearted (of course!) Thank you for sharing it - and suggesting I play them!

btw - I'm starting to think Belgium is full of creative geniuses thanks to you ;)

I played these today, and I must say. They are awesome! The first one I loved the lighting
you used to make it look like sun rays beaming down. The clock tower was also great, and I like the comedy. Now, I thought the second one was even better. I liked the whole style of your graphics better. The whole thing is just really well done. Looking forward to part 3.

Time for my review :kz:

As you know - and I have the feeling is mutual - we have the same kind of humor and style or to say it less blunt: we seem to have some common interests. Saying this, my review is less objective since the level simply stroke my taste. I love the figure of Sir Sackboy, how you non verbally draw him as the loveable but not so great hero of your tale with his grumpy side kick that talks more that he does.

I'd show your level as an exellent example for a good story with minimum speech bubbles. A lot is told by the way you build the level, the pictures you hung on the walls and how the characters treat the hero.
The artistic style of the level is not always making sense (fire pipes falling from the sky) but this is not an issue since everything fits together. I like your lightning a lot and the many different ideas you packed into every section. There is a lot of diversity and it never gets boring. You use a lot of common ideas, twist them a little (for example the exploding of the bridge in Part I) and garnish it with a stupid comment of the side kick. This is how great comedies are made.
The only visual thing that I do not find just perfect is, that it at times look a little rough and unfinished. There is a way to let something look rough but not unfinished, but this is not the case in every spot. But usually you take your time to decorate everything.

What I liked a lot in your second Part (that I kind of missed in the first one after I saw it in the second and want to have it in the third) was the secrets and the collecting of the coins. I was watching and searching your level even closer just to find everything - and I would have done so if i just would have jumped from the boat a second sooner, man that last one was just not nice :). Again ... the lightning, everything fit together, the way you "left" the dragon was ingeniously funny ... although a bit disgusting and the graphical update on your companion should be in the first level as well, looked really nice. Over all - I am repeating myself - level looked great, the dialoges where fun to read and the main character though not present (or me personating him) was adorable. Your levels - for me - have some kind of charme most levels do not have and I hope to see that again.

5 Stars and a Heart.

you know the part where you have to put the diamonds into their objective?
maybe change the jetpacks to tetherless jetpacks :)

Zwollie
04-29-2009, 04:20 PM
Thx for all the comments guys!! :D

@ Dkjestrup:
You mean the grey stone with the yellow border?
Sorry to dissapoint, but that material will be very present in chapter III as well.
I personally love that material for temple-levels. :)

@ Fjonan:
Thanks for that great review!! :p

I like to tell a simple but fun story with as few text-bubbles as I can but I'm struggling with it in chapter III.
The hero receives a "sacred mission" so he has a reason to get to chapter IV and I have to explain its reason without becoming a pain to read.

I had this idea that "the" character would throw him a key that unlocks a storybook-level explaining, in-depth, the reason of this mission and its history but that means a lot more work (and time) as I would also want this level to be kinda fun to play and nice to look at. That level should also be available as soon as I publish chapter III.

@ Oldage:
The tetherless jetpacks is not a bad idea actually!!

I plan on doing some big revisions on part I & II while still keeping the original versions available:

* I want to update the looks and gameplay of part I and a little on part II.

* I want to add the new "chapter III Oswald model" to the first 2 chapters...wich takes a long time because he has different facial expressions and bodymovements for each appearance!!

* I have this vision of the main chapters + sidequest mini-games set in the surroundings of each linked level when you are able to find all 8 tokens in one particular level.

Right now, I'm focusing on chapter III though. So much to do, so very little time!! :(

To tell you the truth, this should have been released ages ago but I'm a very slow creator.

I have a finished/scrapped version of this level on my moon but I kinda hated it.
I have a lot of different ideas and it really doesn't work when you try and put them all in one level.

Hey Zwollie I just played your levels. The first level was extremely impressive for a first level. The beginning with the opening credits-thing, the exploding tower that falls and becomes a bridge, the clock tower, it was all very well done. That said, overall I wasn't blown away by the level at all. It was great but not a must-play.
On the other hand, episode 2 was a must-play, and had all the, uh, let's say polish and visual finesse that the first one sort of lacked. The level design and contraptions were all really good, I loved the dragon-token idea, and the dragon shapes looked awesome... I can't wait for chapter 3!

Thx for the comments, Grethiwha!! :)

Every time someone mentions it, it becomes clearer and cleared that I have to do that remake
of the 1st chapter I was thinking about.
It's kinda pointless to just polish the existing level, I made it with no expierence and the way I structured it is very illogical.

I was kinda hoping people wouldn't be playing that one anymore by now, ha!!
But yeah....it is a series after all. :)

That's it, chapter IV will have to wait. After chapter III it's back to the beginning for me.

A remake? Wow, not even I can be arsed to do that 0_0 Can't wait for it...But Chapter III's coming first, right?

If you're really attached to the series, go ahead I guess. But man, my first level was like a minute long and had enemies with no attacks and a rocket-car at the end, but I still love it, kinda. You have an awesome first level, and a remake is a lot of work. I guess what I'm saying is..... yeah I couldn't be arsed either. :p

Yeah, but I would still keep the original version published either.....

Meh, I'll see :D

First off I wanna say that overall it was a great level. I had fun with it. Not too hard, not too easy. It had really nice content, lots of original stuff, etc. There's a bit of a bug at the drawbridge, if you don't feel like dragging an explosive over to it, you can just push the gate over a bit and slip past without blowing up the explosives. Not a huge thing, the explosives aren't that hard to figure out, just letting you know it's there. The ending leaves a great cliffhanger, I'm tempted to go play ch. 2 right now. I probably will later on. I'm giving it a 4 star and hearting it. Tagged "Brilliant". Will play ch. 2 later on. Good job! ^_^

Zwollie, I just played CH 2 and have some feedback for you.

Your intro drew me in immediately. Very well crafted stage and objects, which makes this Level very appealing visually. I also liked my mind being challenged by your clever puzzle designs. Your pixie (at least it resembled a pixie) was a pretty cool effect. I missed some of the orbs, so I will have to return again and see if I can get my score higher. Your Dragon ship was nicely done also.

I rated this Level a 4-Star, Hearted it and you as a Creator. I will be going back...must...improve...score.

If I had to select areas for improvement, it would be the following.
1. If I explore, which I always do, it would be nice to be rewarded with a "bubble for my trouble", rather than just gas. I see you like the gas (lol).
2. After you fall down to the lair, where the pixie first appears, I noticed you changed the Music to something that sounded like the MGS themes. It kinda broke the mood that you had going at the start, and which was building nicely. The next selection of Music after that was more appropriate for the Level, and you might possibly consider eliminating the MGS music and extend the radius of the other.

Definitely a level that I recommend everyone should play. Very well done! And why can't I find these types of Levels when they're first published--it's a shame.

And to all the Creators of LBP, we are a rare breed indeed.

Looking forward to your review of Takken (Part 1)-The Beginning.

Yeh, it was meant to break the mood, intented as a joke actually :)

I'll be sure to play your takken level and give some feedback!!

I see, the ole "let's break the mood" technique. Then I have to say, Well Done!

But no bubble gas mixture :(. Please, I beg of you, must...have...bubbles.

Just kidding, but I do have to improve my score--it was terrible. I lost way too many lives to the dreaded gas.

What gas are you talking about actually? :)
I know I have a little gas in the beginning to border the area (this was before the discovery of invisble materials)

Yeah, my next chapter has more bubbles in it, I just don't like my levels to be a "bubblefest".
You get most of your score through the dragontokens.

RickRock_777

I was talking about the gas to the left after falling into the lair. I realized this was a border, but that coupled with the change in music apparently left an imprint on my mind.

I agree about bubble-fests, and I don't blame you for keeping a limit on these. I was more trying to be funny with my comment above, which is why I plan to play your level again to imrpove my score and get in the Top 10. Guess that means your level also has great Reply Value--consider that an addition to my review comments.

Again, I thoroughly enjoyed Chapter 2, and am looking forward to playing your other levels.

1st let me say thank you for playing my level.

Ok on with the show...

Ch. 1

Good titles.

Love your art work.
Love the 'tag along pixie/fairy' great idea and great execution.
Good platforming through out.
Not near as polished as your 2nd but a better looking job then my 1st :) Your Dragon is a very cool element.
I really like the bomb sections.
Story is very good. I'm sure there are alot of text bubbles but the story is so 'fun' that I truly don't think about it. "Left butt cheek'" had me rolling.

Maybe slightly repetitive with some of the death jump platform sections.

At the part where the Pixie tells you 'we have to get out of here...go up the clock tower' : There is an area under the stairs with bubbles...I had to jump a fence/wall to get there (which is cool) but I cant get out so I have to 'pop' :(

Then we get to the turning wheels of fire! These seem familiar...while tricky (to me) they are very cool and fun!

Inside the Dragon!? What a cool way to end it and set up the next.

I gave it 5 Stars because it was at 3 and deserves more than that...but My true score is 4 stars with a brilliant tag.

Ch. 2

Love the recap! Another very cool way to re-inject the story and promote your previous level.

Pixie looks better and is funnier then ever!

OK I'm in the unmentionable area of a Dragon...who does that!? (Love it btw!)

Thats using the innermost regions of your brain :)

The story and action are intertwined very well. The Golden dragon shrine nice touch. (I missed your secret but my friend didn't)
I don't know how you got away with all these shapes seems like enough to build 2 levels!

Atmosphere is done much better this time and I love your dragon tokens!

Lava waterfall is a cool idea but needs to be much slower...lava wouldn't move that fast. I'm sure your thermo is maxed...but will it cost you more just to slow it down?

Nice puzzle with the gems.

The Dragon fire barge is really cool.

The design of the dragons is excellent!

So many positive comments and and very few critiques.

Gave it 5 stars and an Ingenious tag!

Very cute and funny story with great design!

Yeah, I know...
I tried slowing it down but it just didn't look right anymore.
I'll see what I can do about it....I have zero thermo left though.

Thank you so much for your comments on my level.

Writing this as I play.

Wow.. entrance is amazing.

I'm liking the visuals.

Whoops - just died.

Whoa - just blew myself up on the bombs.

Love the explosives!!!

Love the contrast in materials you've used.

Great use of all the fields.

Beautiful lighting effects (Rays of sunshine)

I founds the wheels in the clock tower a little tricky but only because my jumping skills leave a lot to be desired.

Dragon is awsome and loved the humour when you hit the bottom!!

Yay, I'm 377th!!

Overall, I really enjoyed this level and feel its under-rated.

5 Stars and hearted.

And Morgana....I'm aiming for a fall 2011 release, lol. :D

Aren't the materials that you use incredibly thermometer heavy? I know it fits in with the design and everything but that on top of all of your custom stuff - How much thermo have you used already?!

Zwollie
06-13-2009, 10:36 AM
No, they are quite kind on my thermo actually. :)
I still have 60% of thermo left.

Basic carboard adds almost nothing.
Standard metal and rock for caves don't add much either.
Then I have the special stonematerial wich adds a little but I use them from start to end so it's worth it.

+ The custom stuff I make uses the same materials so that doesn't change a thing.
Mm stuff is actually a lot harder on the thermo than mine.

I'm working very economic on this one (another reason it takes so long)
the shapes I use might seem detailed but they are quite basic if you look closely. It's just the way I combine them I guess..

So in short, I don't really have thermo issues with my current one :)

At last I have played Chapter 2 and here is my humble opinion.

It's brilliant. I loved it.

Very beautiful, loved the colours, the humour and only torched myself a few times on the jumps!!!

I don't know why but I just love flying around on a jet pack, picking things up and having to find somewhere to put them down again and then getting that lovely 'you got it right' sound!!!

I missed a token-bah humbug. No worries, I'll play it again later.

Excellent work

5 stars and heart from me.

As compared to Chapter II?

Well, chapter II was my 2nd level and we all keep on learning.
Chapter I & II were just build as I went along, you do stupid things....unfixable things :D

So I'm pretty sure I will be able to put more stuff into chapter III then I did in II.

Played these today finally. The levels have alot of personality, and the feeling of fun found in the story levels... one thing that seemed interesting, was that I took the time to dress my sackboy as pictured, and everything felt alot more in character. I felt like a real accidental hero that way.

Very nice intro screens... a good variety of platforming, a couple spots of obstacle puzzles to get your walls blown and doors opened - good balance. Collapsing structures are always nice, especially when you end up traversing them when they fall.

My favorite part was the ominous dragon tail moving in the background on the bridge section... that was something I saw in the metro story levels, and isn't something I see people take the time to do often. Really spices up a levels visuals and gives it a feeling of layering and depth.

The heckling companion is a good touch too. Reminds me of Samuel L Jackson in Afro Samurai.

I like the idea of a episodic story recap in the start of episode two.

The look of the ladder for the catapault is awesome btw - cobbled together by a madman who's obviously been stuck in here too long... like the raft in Castaway lol. The material set for the dragon's intestine section is nice - the x-shaped floaties and the use of sound here is great too. GREAT music choice.

The lighting change after you pray to the gold dragon looks very good. The wall carvings look nice with the design of dragons, and the flaming logs rolling down it's mouth was very creative.

Great volcano section... I wanted to do a streaming fall of lava in FI3 but didn't have the therm left for it. Nicely done. Ah and I found a couple secrets - always good for replay value, I guess I'll see what they unlock at the end huh?

Funny story with the crystals here - I tried reversing the two middle ones, and then tried inserting them all in the same holes upside down (they fit so it seemed logical)... nothing. So I read the text again, and thought maybe, just maybe, I was supposed to throw them in the lava out there. That did nothing. After throwing the bottom three out there, I went back and realized I could fly UP through what I thought was a solid ceiling - couldn't get the crystals back because they were beyond my jetpack reach, so I'm gonna restart here :P

REALLY nice lantern on this boat. Crap, missed a tolken while I was typing thing :/ I love the swing that the lantern does after landing - good detail.

Wow there's 8 of these huh? I'll be back for more.

Nice work.

Thanks for playing NinjaMicWZ!! :)

Great "write as you play" feedback!!
I'm really glad that you "got" the change in music when you're about to shoot out of the dragon.

Some people get it straight away that they need to take the crystals up, others do everything but going up.
I briefly tought of giving a hint in that area but I decided to drop hints for puzzles in chapter II.

That's the reason why the sidekick doesn't show up that much in the middle of the level.

I am pretty new to this Forum but hope you donít mind if I add some comments, as I really enjoyed Chapter II of your series.

I agree with a lot of what has already been said by others but the thing that struck me most was the strong sense of character you managed to create for Sir Sackboy. Playing the level as him makes it so much fun! Not quite sure how you did it. I guess itís a combination of his distinctive look/costume and the dialogue with his companion (he has some great caustic comments!). It certainly hooks you into the level and adds depthand humour to the story which some of the "rescue the princess/village from the dragon" type levels don't have. I canít wait to see what he gets up to in Chapter III.

I also really like trying to find hidden items. Only got 6 of those dragon tokens so far *eye twitches* but I am going to find every single one if it kills me...*gnashes teeth*

Very well designed and built, very balanced in gameplay, wonderful pieces of art, especially in the second chapter, the dragons were awesome to say the least.
I got quite pi**ed when I ended part 2 since I couldn't enter part 3 and wanted to play it immediately.

Man, I'm impressed! That was terrific! I especially liked the Light through the stained glass, and the gears in the clock tower.

I feel almost petty trying to critique this.

Okay, so anyway, here are the trifling problems I noticed.

:star: I don't really get the blue guy. who is he? at first I thought it was some poor denizen of the castle being tortured, but then he keeps calmly showing up. A little exposition would help. Maybee a little sign at the title sequence "Sir Sack boy and virgil". As it is, he's just this enigmatic figure that is on really familliar terms with Sir Sack boy.

:star: (minor) off the wobbly battlement is kind of a blind jump. Not sure if you meant that to be part of the challenge element.

:star: when you are pulling the third bomb out of the box to take out the big stock-pile of explosives below, the magic mouth hits you right when you are tightly jammed in the between the cieling and the floor. I wonder if that might be placed a little higher so you arn't in such a nervous position when the prompt comes up. The line is "looks like they store the explosives down here..." It really Jerks you around.

:star: the next one is a little kitchy too. Maybe if instead of a cut-scene, you used a sensor switch attached to the mouth and a camera zone that tracks more. That way you could see if you are headed right into the pile of bombs.

:D LMAO @ "By grohan's left buttcheek" wouldn't mind more of that mixed into the text.

:star: what's with the fart sound when you get eaten by the dragon? shouldn't that be a belch?

I hope this helps, and Thanks for your kind comments on my gradient utility.

Hey played your levels (chap1 & 2 for now), and I enjoyed it!
(even if I'm not much into the castle/dragon theme :p)

Nothing much to say, it's all good for me :
- Great design and scenery
- Nice story telling with a good humor
- nice ideas
- well balanced : not too long and not too hard

Maybe just some camera angles that are not very practical a some point (in chap 1 mainly),
but nothing serious....

:star::star::star::star::star: for both
Great work!:)

Hey zwollie !

I have played the first part of your saga :)

I mostly agree with the things that already were said

quote " LOVED the part where you see the dragon outside the window and end up falling inside (also loved the clock at the top of the clock tower - very well done). "

I also loved those same things, they really made your level shine.

2 remarks though
the intro was beatiful but I felt the visuals were lacking a bit just after the intro and te bombs part.

But in the second part it went up again with some great dragon tail , and beautiful clockwork.

The gameplay was also very nice , I loved the level a lot

if I would have done a review i would give you're level 82% , for beeing very good :)

Ok- Brilliant levels I must say- you've done everything in those two levels that I've managed to do in in my collection of like 20? However, I kow this is the whole hype thing, but reading through the comments, I thought it was going to be a bit better. A. In part one- the bridge falling isn't that big of a deal? I watched a video on youtube- and didn't really notice anything. B. The scenery for the most part is awesome. To sum up how great it was- if you would have put the dragon boat alone, added a massive slide and a paintinator- i would've rated five stars anyway (but then again i'm very genrous) However where the main scenery (I.E the boat, the shrine) was great, the background just seemed to be lacking that 'polished' feel that another person mentioned. However as I mentioned above, it is a great level and I am just making notes on other people's comments really. I'll try them in person tomorrow with my mates, and then will hopefully post another review on how the gameplay was

The heck....hey, thanks for playing!!

The reason you expected it to be better is because both level and comments are very, very old. :)
It was a different time, with different standards and LBP wasn't as explored as it is now.

If I would remake them (which I am but shtttt) I would do things differently and I have off course, as everyone, evolved as a creator.

Even I can say that they used to be pretty decent levels, although if I would bump into them now I don't think I would be impressed at all.
They are from a different "era' if you will. Time moves fast in the Little Big World of LBP and levels get outdated pretty darn fast.

I'm actually ashamed people still play them...They got a very positive response back in the day but they are so outdated!!

Since you're a veeery lazy guy (you even pretended to have broken arms :p, j/k ) you left the series very soon...

Pic added May 25th 2009...cough cough.
If you had someway managed to keep rolling, this one would have been among the top 10 series in LBP, with Siberia, Lone Ninja, Vagrant Hero, LittleBigGardener etc...
(IMHO a series must have at least 5 levels)
So, keep working since you're making me angry and you're missing my imaginary deadlines.

Haha, well thanks for calling me lazy, that must be the reason I can't find time for creating at all!! :p

No seriously, last time I had a real chunk of time to work on these or any other creative work
was just before I joined the community spotlight crew.

You make choices and it seems I have chosen to do a lot of LBP related duties
but it doesn't really leave a lot of room for my own creations.

For the moment, that bit of time I do have left besides those duties, I spend on other things.
Reading, watching movies, drawing, going out with friends, paying bills, working around my house, ect...

It is on my things I want to accomplish list, I have them roughly outlined on paper
and I have a whole bunch of concept art but when and if it will ever get out of "pre production", I don't know.
