View Full Version : More realistic reactions

Something I've just noticed is how unrealistic some of the materials are. Rubber should bounce, and glass should break.

To me this doesn't matter. Videogames and realism together aren't mandatory. A game needs to make sense in its own.

I love LBP because it is super-realistic on its own. There are awesome physics and everything behave as it should "in that LBP world". We can regognise the properties of all materials and things because the game is communicating its laws and envirronnement extremely well to the player. With most games (that aren't as physics based as LBP) you often have the feeling everything is rubber or plastic, every material is hard, etc. You don't have an accurate feeling like in LBP in most games.

I really don't want my rubber car wheels bouncing around everywhere and I just want a see-through material without it breaking.

I think the materials are fine.

i wouldn't mind rubber being bouncy. but you can make glass "break" just the same way as people make floors break (tiny pieces held together by dissolve)

Well, most rubbers aren't bouncy, actually. It takes a special mixture of ingredients, heat, and pressure to make rubber bounce. I think a bouncy material would be nice, but I wouldn't want rubber to be made bouncy; think of all the levels that would be affected if they changed the properties of existing materials.

Regarding glass, I don't think the physics engine in LittleBigPlanet could handle such dynamic shattering. Even if it could, I think once again it's more useful to add a material that could break than to change the properties of the existing material to fit our needs.

i agree, they could add new materials that do these things but changing the existing things would be bad. Though i could go for fire that burns materials like snaping a rope in a certain amound of time or causing a building to collapse in addition to the current one that just sits there and smolders.

I was just thinking about this actually... but yeah, shattering glass would make online play impossible.

I think it's a quite good idea, but they should just make new bouncy material or smashable glass material instead. If they did just make rubber bouncy and glass smashable, it would effect many, many, levels out there.

Breaking glass would be awesome!
Maybe a tweak option?
Or just a new material all together..?

You do know it would take A LOT of memory and work to make glass break like in real life, don't you?
Think about having to calculate the pieces, having to make all those pieces , becuase they're not gonna be made by themselves, someone HAS to make evry single piece. Plus so many diferent ways ic could break...
You get what i'm trying to say?
Just make your own brekable glass, come on, many people can do it, bet you can as well, and if you say "but it sucks having to make all the pieces and stuff" now think how it would be for the makers to make real breaking glass in the game...

I don't think it would take up a lot of memory. Back when they had the ice hazard, sackboy would break out of the glass and hundreds of little ice shards would fly everywhere. It's not going to be hard to achieve that with glass.

I never said it'd take a HUGE amount of memory, just a lot of memory and time, and i'd seriously rather Mm to focus on the stuff that actually matters for game improvement, and as i said before, if you want your glass to break, then make it break however you can, there are many ways to do so.
Also there's a big difference between making a small thing break into many small pieces and dissapear right away and making any and all glass structures break specifically, because in case you didn't notice, you can make the glass in various ways.
And besides, i'd find it rather annoying if whenever i was trying to do anything with glass it were to break right away even if i didn't want it to.
So think it throughly, do you REALLY want glass that breaks like in real life?

Arkei

I don't want that to happen with all of the glass. I was thinking of a special type of glass.

MM can barely handle the small amount of content they're sending out now, not to mention the incredible amounts of bugs they have to fix, let not confuse their priorities.

Although I do like the glass idea.

Just make your own brekable glass, its easier for everyone...
And as i've said before, I'd rather Mm work on important useful things that can't be made already than things only 1 or 2 creators will use and can already be made by the creator.

You're not serious are you?
Why do you think they might have removed that? Let me bet you that it's because they never could make this feature really competent without slowdown/memory problems.

I agree with this, but i think you should be able to tweak it if you wanted this like some others said.

How we did it in the old ut ued 2.0,
we had a glass sheet, and the moment it was hit, move it away (preferable in the wall above/underneath the window) and let an emitter emitt glass shards together with a breaking glass sound.
Obviously the glass should move so fast, the human eye cannot notice it moving away,
partially because at the same time the emitter would emit its glass shards.

it could work to make a decent looking breaking glass.
if you can only hit it on the left, you could the emitter spit out the shards with a velocity to the right to enhance realism.

but yea, in lbp when an objects gets broken, it just dissolves like the dissolvant material, it would be cooler if glass shattered, stone's break and wood splinters,
even if it was just to replace the dissolving animation.

I think the materials are fine how they are, they really fit into the LBP world. However maybe materials SHOULD have different animations other than the dissovle animation. However I think the reason for keeping it all so simple is a case of keeping smooth gameplay and suitable for all ages. Shattering glass could be scary for young kids? I know it sounds stupid but thats the way things are with games.

If broken glass is more scary than the final boss, Ill eat my hat.

and the lbp engine (especially looking at the ps3 itself) should be able to handle WAY more than we are allowed to create in one level.

I think glass should be able to be tweaked to make it breakable.
