  • Community Spotlight Episode 84

Hello everyone and welcome to ...erm...last week’s Episode of the Spotlight. As the site was down last weekend we didn’t get a chance to finish and post the usual Spotlight thread but we did publish the hub, due to sterling efforts on Hubbie's part (an extra ration o' cookies for him!) . That gave us a bit of a dilemma, though, as to what to do with the thread. In the end, although we know it’s now definitely “old news”, we decided to go ahead with a “slimline” version of the thread in any event. It didn’t seem fair to the creators involved not to have a thread, especially with our new policy of not including all levels spotlighted in the hub. So, yeah, with only the tiniest of fanfares, then, here’s the belated Episode 84 lite! Things should be back to normal with a full thread next weekend. In the meantime enjoy a feast of absolutely amazing levels, platformers, puzzlers and much, much more!

     "Technology in deep space"
    by  ALS_TheGamer
    - Nothing special here, just a LBP 1 style platforms using only bounce pads and LBP 2 Logic. Level designed for 1 player. Thanks to all my friends for test, the suggestions and support. Special thanks to my wonderful friend JJ131319 for create some custom stickers. - This level show technology/space theme, but the space itself is a mystery, as far we can believe and feel, like our own existence, our life, this level is dedicate to the memory of Elizabeth Fiers (LFiers's mother). R.I.P.

“Nothing special”?!? Wow, then to borrow a phrase from Arthur Dent, this must be some strange new usage of the words “nothing special” that I wasn’t previously aware of. This level starts with a bang – literally, as the whole level launches itself as a rocket into space and from that moment you realise you are in for something truly...erm...special. And it does not disappoint: the gameplay is flawless – fun, inventive and beautifully paced. It showcases pure physic s based gameplay brilliantly, the contraptions, moving parts and layer use are just spot on. The visuals are wonderful too - that is one superb looking spaceship – and above all, it simply a lot of fun to play, whether you’re tracking down all the secret score bubbles or trying to improve your score against the clock. I’m probably preaching to the converted here, but if for some reason you haven’t already played, you are missing out!

     Tileboard Trickery
    by  Prattz
1-PLAYER STRONGLY RECCOMENDED. Traverse your way through the corridors of the temple that's pathways require both platforming and puzzle-solving skills! Special thanks to Grayspence! I apologise for the length but the thermometer forced me to come to an early close. Also, due to the over-complexity of the level, some decorative shapes and objects may disappear randomly.

Platforming and puzzles, go together like peanut butter and chocolate. Precise timing and clever jumping pairs so well with sitting and staring at nothing while doing nothing except for trying to understand how this piece here is supposed to fit in over there. One makes you throw a controller in frustration, the other, well it can also make you throw a controller in frustration. But its a different frustration and both together challenge your mind and dexterity so well that the frustration is part of the fun!

Soaring in the Gaze of Epicness
    by  Fuzzbreeks
Chuging across the wonderverse a huge space shuttle glides... But despite its epicness things still become a little rusty.....

Chugging across the wonderverse has a lot to be said for it – this is a cool level with some innovative gameplay ideas – your handy creatinator shoots out exploding blocks which both clear blockages in your way and make a temporary bridge to safety. There’s a fun story too and a great art style – a patchwork colourful, almost pop art spaceship for a change. This level is pure pleasure to play. And when, only after it had been picked, I realised the creator was 13 and that it was his first level, well that just added to its impressiveness.

     Bjounce
    by  ingenieus
A random world where nothing makes sense. Inverted properties on material and objects figure it out and have fun. Best 1 player but awesome regardless of how many join Music composed by HaloNova.

Ingenieus will have you throwing years’ of playing habits out of the window as you tackle the topsy-turvy world of Bjounce. You quickly learn to avoid bouncepads and leap happily onto spikes, collect bombs and steer well clear of points bubbles. Brilliantly designed and with a unique concept that turns hallowed LBP rules on their head, this level will have you bamboozled but enjoying every moment of it. For once counter-intuitive is a totally good thing!

     Why is a raven like a writing-desk?
    by  Just_Tom__
......if it was so, it might be; and if it were so, it would be as it isn't, it ain't. (music my NK827) (Thanks to Missi_Cat for help)

Ravens and writing desks, riddles with no answers and a level which matches them in its wonderful randomness! Just_Tom__ presents us with a level full of tricks and topsy-turviness – nothing is what you’d expect and every press of a button is an adventure. The backdrop is charming and very Alice-like in style and I loved the Cheshire Cat grin which appears from nowhere. It’s a delightful excursion into a world of fantasy and inverted logic – you’ll enjoy every eccentric moment !

     Trecherous Tides
    by  mcdonald1967
Step forth onto the wooden planks and dive into the salty sea water. An abandoned, stony mainland lays where pirates use to exist. Nearly all treasure has been taken and the forgotten land has been broken.

Yaaaar! There be fun to be had in this 'ere level, a level that has ye walkin' the plank and shipping off to some clever platforming and some tricky timing. So cut the gib and raise the mizzen mast. I has a map and to great fun and mcdonald1967 marks the spot!

     Moustachio'd Mishap [Part 1]
    by  grayspence
[ This is a Non-Serious Level] Sir. Bubbly the Cat's moustache has been taken from him right under his nose! He says that that hairless Watermelon that shares his scratching post did it! Platform your way through a place filled with troublesome cats to the other side, and get him talking! A level by Grayspence and Prattz. [1-2 PLAYERS ONLY]... Part 2 coming eventually! LBPCentral.com

Who knew a cat could get so attached to his moustache? Who even knew cats had moustaches? This level will have you purring as you play with its solid, fun platforming and utterly charming visuals. It’s full of colour and has a quirky style reminiscent of LBP1 at its best. Oh and it has cats everywhere, fat ones, thin ones, marmalade ones, grim ones – peeping out from every corner and adding...erm... hazards... to the gameplay in their own unique way. Funny, irreverent and more than easy on the eye! I can’t wait for Part 2!

     How I roll (1 PLAYER)
    by  SlurmMacKenzie
My version of the rolling ball level. Some balls are easier to use than other, so chose wisely. There is a spectator mode, and you can chose the player who will control the ball at the begining if you're more than one, but the level is best played with one player. Thanks a lot to Breezy-the-Pro for the great music, and to deadmn, MAD-WIZ and jauw2 for the tests, help and creative inputs. Fell free to report bugs if you found any, and thanks a lot for playing!

I think that by now we all know, and love, just how Slurm rolls! As we’ve come to expect from him, he picks yet another gameplay idea and takes it to a whole new place. Here it’s ball rolling games which get the Slurm treatment. You get to pick your own ball from a selection that includes oranges and rubber tyres (!) and then by tilting the level, roll it through the maze to safety. But as well as the usual traps and pitfalls, there are all sorts of added extras, including special bounce-pads, a clever scoring system and cool puzzle elements. The in-out movers add another dimension to the gameplay as does the inverted gravity. It all adds up to a challenging and very addictive game. Now if only I had the tiniest amount of hand-eye coordination, I might even be able to finish it someday!

     Embrace of Darkness (Part 1)
    by  papanurgle123
Its the day of Balor's test of strength, what does Galder have in store for him? (Thanks to Dragonheart12321 for music and Donal222 for the clown artwork and lordwarblade for the enemy logic)

It’s not common to find a level where brilliant AI is combined with a good story and great atmosphere but papanurgle has pulled it off here. You play as Balor who must undergo tests before meeting a fearsome boss. The dark cave setting, lit with sinister purple light creates a brooding atmosphere for these trials. The main character is deeply cool and his special power ups work seamlessly – I loved the flash of dark wings with the double-jump. There are plenty of clever contraptions to negotiate and enemies to overcome. A hugely impressive level series that no one should miss.

     Watermill Works with MOVE
    by  Aratiatia
**I don't know many friends with MOVE so please feel free to comment after playing!** Don't hurt the crocodiles as you explore an abandoned watermill. Get the machinery MOVING again and enjoy the ambience! P.S. - the water is deadly. Thanks for playing :)

An amazing use of MOVE, the brain crane is such a powerful power up. Dust off your MOVE, and then charge it up, this level will remind you just how good that DLC is

Amnesia - Revelations (level 3) (Hard)
    by  cakito123
Special Thanks to - Kiko_Veio_10 - Ruthtomaz - ClashTowWorlds - JM_Quirino. On the penultimate Level of the series, Marcos has sent SackBoy to his Mansion Of Death! The level supports 1 Player only. The use of Attract-O-gel won't be so good with 2 or more player.

Marcos wants you dead it seems.. And even though his mansion packs many a punch for you, you can always bounce back when literally there will be u-turns as you plummet towards fiery chasms. Gotta love the addition of attract-o-gel. But that's the simplest mechanism here, attract-o-gel is really taken to the limits in this place. Vigilant eyes are vital to get through this one unscathed.

     AG-Systems (Platformer)
    by  L1GhTmArE
This acid grouping facility is the largest in the galaxy and is known for its deadly acid pools. On a tour visit of the facilty Sackboy takes a wrong turn and stumbles down a vent... [Easy/ Medium Difficulty] Play alone for best experience but its possible with more. There are 16 secrets in all: 6 easy, 6 medium and 4 ¨Impossible¨ secrets. Also there are 3 extras and an optional race mode. Hope you enjoy!

L1ghtmare does it again! Another brilliant level full of wonderful, slick visuals and crammed with creative obstacles. Explore the bowels of the sleekly corporate Acid Grouping facility and see how many of its secrets you can find; some easy and others cunningly hidden or tantalisingly in sight but seemingly impossible to reach. Then, in the second half of the level, get swept along in a fast-paced, smooth-flowing grappling hook section which will leave you breathless. Level design at its very best.

     weight to go!
    by  bikerider12
Good thing you ate the last twinky in the box! You must be able to set things moving using your weight as a switch. Be careful though! Electricity lights the way to the end. Thanks again for NK827 for the music, Jedi_Brad for another awsome icon, and all my other friends for help and support!

I love the way Bikerider12 is always thinking outside the box. In each of his levels he experiments with a new concept or mechanic and this level is no exception. Here weight is the key – platforms rise or descend as Sackboy’s weight or a counterweight kicks in. It’s cleverly done and the mixture of puzzles and platforming works well. The setting with its arty, tarnished metal look and cool lighting is stylish and the whole thing has a closed-in feel which suits the gameplay down to the ground. It’s like being inside a huge Chinese puzzle box. So if you’re looking for something just that bit different from the usual platformer, be sure to check this out.

     Rundown [1 Player Only] [V1.03]
    by  SonofaSack96
Oh no! The spaceship may fall apart if you don't shut off the engine in time! Make your way through this fast pace platformer in the shortest time possible to save everyone! Fast reactions and perfect timing are required! Co-Created with Fuzzbreeks and BrosefJenkins. Special thanks to BrosefJenkins and bizkit39 for beta testing. Music by the one and only, Festerd_Jester. . . . Some gameplay elements may not work 100% of the time. If you have any problems, let me know.

Rundown is a thrilling dash through a broken down spaceship to try and shut down the engines in time. As you hurtle through the damaged ship, you’re bounced, propelled and spun this way and that in the race to the finish. It all flows beautifully and there are spectular moments as the spaceship breaks up around you. Brilliantly put together and huge fun to play, this level will certainly get your adrenalin pumping.

     Grabby Gorge (Platformer)
    by  Alley_Cat_8633
Travel through a lush gorge filled with exotic plants and waterfalls while scaling its greatest heights and discovering its unexplored caves (7 secrets to find!). Went for a classic LBP feel here. Gameplay is focused on grabbing, so I hope you all don't mind pressing R1 alot! Thanks to Comishguy67 for letting me use his song titled "Blue Note". Happy gadding everyone.

Make sure you’re sitting down before you load Alley_Cat’s latest level, as the stunning visuals will surely knock you for six. The scenery must be some of the most beautiful put together in LBP and from the lush gorge with its blossom and waterfall to the dimly lit caves, it’s all gorgeous. In your path are a series of artful contraptions and obstacles that test your grabbing skills and it’s truly impressive how many fun and varied challenges Alley_Cat managed to come up with based on just that one mechanic. To top it all off, there are seven secrets scattered through the level to entice you to explore. A beautiful and fun level - worth playing for the water effects alone!

Days Of Revenge part 1 --The Final Judgement--
    by  monstertruckpipk
The cube is a place of chaos. In the great war it was designed to contain angels treasonous to the laws of the archetype. When the last demon is sealed in it's walls it will be destroyed with everything inside. For thousands of years they searched for ways to escape. Somewhere between the countless untold horrors in the darkens they found success. The demons have set into motion a series of events that will bring down the walls of the cube and allow their final war to begin. These are their Days Of Revenge.

If you're looking for a dark and cinematic experience, look no further than this level. The atmosphere is unlike anything I've seen in LBP before. From the moody lighting to the strange hieroglyphics littering walls and floors. The theme is done perfectly and really draws you in. Not to mention the audio and camera work, which really bring out the scale and character of the environment. Part 1 in what's sure to be a fantastic series.

Fantastic spotlight! a little belated but that's absolutely understandable. Good job getting the site back up and running and I'm glad that a post of this episode was made. It just wouldn't seem right without one. It's so nice to see alot of new names and good levels on there. I wanted to address something I noticed about the hub this time around. It's not a complaint as much as just trying to clear something up. I'm all for the the levels with the least plays being put in the center and the levels with more plays put over on the left. I think its a grea idea. But I noticed that L1ghtmare's level which had about 700 plays was over on the left side. Somebody, I forget who, told me the levels by the more popular creators go on the left and the unknown creators get the middle. So which is it? Play count or creator hearts that determine if your level goes on the far left? I just want to make sure I understand the policy. Thanks again spotlight crew and please continue to bring us these great levels.

Thankyou so much for the Spotlight! A lot of my friends got spotlighted too, which is really awesome . Keep up the great work spotlight crew!

Oh, and Alley_Cat_8633, I'm pretty sure they are determined by the number of plays the level has because the ones in the middle have a pink bow that resembles the level having less than 250 plays at the time of the Hub being published. My friend Fuzzbreeks got spotlighted as well and he is over with L1ghtare in the Hub, even though Fuzzbreeks only has 165ish player hearts. His spotlighted level also had around 1000 plays at the time of the hub being published.
