  • Community Spotlight Episode 99

Hello and welcome to Episode 99 of LBPCentral's Community Spotlight! We're truly excited over at Spotlight Central to see the beginning of:

    A New Era! ! !

. . . erm, we split our post up a bit, did you notice?

Since the arrival of the Karting Spotlight (who are fitting in really well, in case you're wondering. They've really got the hang of their cake mixing abilities... Now they just need to perfect their icing skills) to our humble home, we decided that it would be better to keep things neat, and split it up a little!

On top of that we've been preparing for December the 9th, a date more momentous than Christmas and Thanksgiving all wrapped up into one.

What happens on December the 9th? Well, if you don't already know, then you'll just have to wait and see.

On that curious note, let's get on with the spotlight!

    The Temporal Traverse [1P Only]
    by  Sock_Pasta_Rock
Weave your way through the corridors of time in order to pass a series of puzzling tests. 1 Player only - multiplayer will result in incredible lag. Music by Velvet-Audio

Whoa! Whoa indeed young level seeker, for you have stumbled upon something special here. You've been given the ability to control time! Ok, yes, we've all seen the "time" mechanic used in LBP before, but not quite like this. In here, not only can you pause, rewind and fast forward time, but you get to encounter your past self performing the action that you just did. Wait, what? It's like this. You press a button and see a door open, step off the button and the door closes. We need in that door but how? Easy, walk to the door then to the button then rewind time until you're back at the door. Now watch as your past self or would it be future self since YOU are now in the past? Great. Gave myself a headache. Anyway, watch as your time self presses the button, allowing you access. Genius! If you've ever played Braid or something akin to it, then you know what I mean. The puzzles get progressively more challenging so you better have your noggin prepared. A great level with a sharp design that you must play!

    biorogue

I'll start this off very very simply indeed: Do you like Braid? Yes? Then you'll love this. At first, I found it very difficult to turn my creator brain off. You know, the one that keeps asking “How did they do this? How would I do it, for that matter...?” But then I became so enamoured with the puzzles at work, and their possible solutions, that all those questions flew out of the window. This is truly a wonderful level, with ridiculously well thought out puzzles, and a sleek design that does nothing to hamper your progress. Exquisite.

    rialrees

Well what do we have here? A sackbot that can pause, rewind, and fast forward, but you can see the action previously performed when you meddle with time. It almost reminds me of that dagger from Prince of Persia. This power is not just for your amusement however, you have to twist the very fabric of time and use yourself, and well, yourself from a previous time to complete a series of ingeniously constructed puzzles. But if you find time, you can always take a second to wave to erm… yourself… in the future (I think I said that right?) to provide a bit of encouragement along the way. So what are you waiting for? Strap on those thinking caps and give this great level a go!

[RPSBBC] The Tale of a Caterpillar, a Squirrel, and 3 Spiders
    by  L-I-M-I
My entry for the Radioplaystation.com (@RadioPS_Live) BBC Contest... Time is ticking and story time must go on!! Help a squirrel reclaim her tree from a brood of menacing spiders, while recovering all the lost pages of Mr. Caterpillars book so all the little critters of the forest and beyond may hear a wonderful story :D Thx to my friends for testing (art, mags,) and @Jarreguin001 for music and syncing it to a most fantastic surprise. Collect all the pages for an awesome surprise ending!!!!

Let me invite you to a wonderful tale of sweet squirrel who just wants to read a great story to all the little critters of the forest, but those troublesome spiders have absconded with pages from the book! This is where you come in. Your job, no, your duty is to retrieve these pages and rid the tree of these awful arachnids once and for all. The scenery is fantastic and I just loved the character work on display here. The gameplay is fun with an engaging mechanic that I'm sure you'll enjoy. Collect all the pages and you'll be treated with a brilliantly animated reading of The Hungry Caterpillar.

    biorogue

Looking to hear a wonderful reading of the Hungry Caterpillar? Not so fast! A group of mischievous spiders have stolen all of Ms. Squirrel’s acorns saved for the winter and are holding them as ransom for the book! So you’ll have to set aside your arachnophobia (well I had to at least) and help Ms. Squirrel defeat the spiders, retrieve the acorns, AND return the book back to the caterpillar before storytime! If your hands aren’t full already, you’ll also have to sneak into the spider’s layer to get there, but luckily, Ms. Squirrel has provided a Spidey-Matic 5000—a web launching device that will allow you to sneak past the other spiders and also prove essential to traverse the lair. Truly you can ask for nothing more in a level: great story, wonderful scenery, charming characters, and some ingenious gameplay. What are you waiting for? Story time is quickly approaching!

    stryder12

The bonus level for saving the day and preventing those small woodland critters from having their story time cancelled is a reading of the tale they were all waiting to hear. The Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle is brought beautifully to life in a wonderful animation which has all the bold and colourful charm of Carle’s illustrations. It’s an almost perfect recreation of the story that will bring back a lot of fond memories for anyone for whom it was a favourite childhood book. The expressions on that caterpillar’s face are wonderful and the music is a great fit. It’s guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

    Streets of Newport (lntroduction)
    by  radio_statik
Tamera Moorings is on her way home from school when she is set upon by a gang of... erm... I THINK they're human.... they might just be mutated rats. Anyway! They have a nasty look in their eye. I wonder what they have in store? -- Voices by @radio_statik and @rialrees . Extra art provided by @crasher360

Welcome to Newport where the streets are tough and the gals are tougher. It would seem that your sister has gotten herself into a pickle by being kidnapped by a group of thugs and now it's up to you to rescue her. Crossing this concrete jungle will not be so easy, but with a few well placed punches and kicks, you'll soon be on your way to victory. The design of this level is of a classic side scrolling arcade beat 'em up game and it just rocks! The art style is classic Radio Statik and I bet you find yourself stopping a few times to soak in the scenery. The characters are great, the voice acting superb, the design mouth watering amazing and best of all, the gameplay is a blast!

    biorogue

It’s always amazing when you bump into a level that possesses that Wow! factor and this level is nothing short of that. Granted bump might be a bit of understatement as this action thriller has POW! BAM! and K.O! written all over it as you fight your way through the streets of Newport. As I watched the introduction and battled through the streets, I couldn’t help but notice that the characters were an artistic masterpiece in themselves even after a couple bumps and bruises. This level was truly brilliantly crafted and even includes a difficulty setting for all of the skilled or not-so-skilled side scrolling arcade fighters. So get ready—maybe a couple push-ups?—and go fight your way through the Streets of Newport.

    stryder12

Those of us from Shropshire have always had our doubts about the goings-on just over the border in Wales and it seems we were right to be worried. I’m not sure what’s scarier to be honest: the mutant rats or the super-tough Hayley Moorings who sets out to rescue her sister, Tamara, from their clutches. The artwork throughout is superb and it’s brilliantly animated and brought to life by the voice acting and humour. The gameplay is apparently *cough* a great recreation of that in the classic arcade style beat ’em ups and whilst I don’t have the skill to get very far (even on simple mode) I had a lot of fun trying. It’s fantastic to see something so unique and memorable in LBP2. The only word for it is “solid”!

    "Dino-mite!"
    by  KomodoBrothers
Cocreated by SharpShot925 Inspired by Portal, this puzzler introduces unique gameplay! The Super Hot Giraffe Girl shows you the magic of your dino-teleporting abilities! And her friends, the Cloud Crew, help you along the way. Take a picture of how many times you teleported to see who did the best!

Oy! Here's one for you that you are sure to love. I love seeing levels that offer up new gameplay elements and this one surely fits that bill. You play as a cute little dinosaur and you've been given a gift and cool one at that. Your gift is that you can magically transport to checkpoints once they are activated. You have to use this gift in order to conquer obstacles, but it's not quite as easy as you may think. This is a great little puzzler level that you will get a kick out of.

    biorogue

Got your thinking cap to hand? Good, well, blow off the dust :P and put it on, as you’re going to need it to get to the end of this level! The Super Hot Giraffe Girl may have given you magic teleporting abilities but learning to use them to get through all the nifty puzzles ahead will keep you on your toes. It’s a really neat and inventive gameplay concept and I love the way the difficulty ramps up later on when you get to throw the checkpoints around as well as just manipulating which one you pop out of. That wall jump towards the end is genuinely testing. It’s always great to see someone being this creative with their gameplay. The chirpy little dinosaur really is very cute and you’ll have a blast popping yourself left, right and centre...oh, and if the pop counter at the end reads too high, you can always join those faking their photos to make the number look smaller!

Warblade's Battle Arena. 1 Player Only.
    by  lordwarblade
This is a survival Hack and Slash based on 2 upcoming levels i am making. There are 2 themes to choose each with its own character and enemies. I hope you all enjoy this level and all of its animations and features. Special thanks to those leaving feedback and criticism.

Whoa! There's a lot going on here! I hardly know where to begin. First, the art style is absolutely stunning. As you head into the arena you may want to look around and gawk at the scenery but believe me, that would be inadvisable as the action immediately heats up. You will be bombarded with horde after horde of all sorts of bad guys, including bats, snakes, warriors and some fiendish bosses. This is a button mashing frenzy as you'll be swinging your sword and shooting arrows like a madman just trying to stay alive! Gorgeous level that will have you coming back for more time and time again.

    biorogue

I want my Mammy! *ahem* 'Scuse me. So, the hordes of darkness are attacking, and it's up to us to face them in the ring. I love the feel of this level – it's like I've stepped into my very own Gladiator Arena, and there is no one who can best me. Everything here is so perfect – the silhouette style is not only beautiful, but also adds to the challenge, whilst the weaponry available and the range of enemies to defeat keeps things from getting stale. I love me a good hack-and-slash, and this ticks all the boxes!

...am I being thick.. I can't see the lbpk and vita posts? or are they coming out separately. Also, I wouldnt have known this was released if I hadn't popped onto the homepage. I normally go straight to the forum so I would have missed this.

they are there adi - in the main post.

An unfortunate side effect of splitting the post up has been the fact that the vita and karting sections have been left in the main forum. We're reconsidering whether to revert to using a single post for all three spotlights to ensure everyone sees all three from the home page. . . if that makes any sense!

Hasn't Streets of Newport already got 2 MM Picks? No offense to Radio_Statik, but I thought part of the purpose of these spotlights was to bring some love to lesser-known quality levels. :/

sorry guys. my wife reliably informs me I came across as a grumpy bugger in the post above. I wasnt meaning too, just trying to say it was hard to find. I like the idea of splitting the spotlights and I always appreciate the work you guys put into it. Wasnt meaning to sound grumpy. Must get her to read my posts in case it doesnt come across in the tone I mean it to

don't worry about that at all adi - feedback is always appreciated, in all forms, no matter how grumpy it may be (and for the record, I didn't take it that you were being grumpy at all )

Sorry for not informing you, but I have brought this up in the forum for deliberation - so we can figure out a suitable way to make things easier to navigate. We're meant to be doing the hunting, after all, not you guys

Thanks for the spotlight. It really means a lot.

It has taken the best part of a year to make, about half of that to figure out the logic, the other half on the visuals. Its not perfect, but I'm rather proud of it. Sure she cant jump, and seems to only hit people in one area, but hey that's Hayley for you.

And yes It has (unexpectedly) received two MM picks. And now a spotlight on top. (Thanks again btw). in regards to it not being a lesser known level... well... it was before I published it. Unless you happened to be me (which would be both weird and mildly disturbing) or a BETA tester, then you would never have even heard of it before the publish date. Let alone the name radio_statik.

Anyhoo... thanks again for the spotlight. Much appreciated. You guys/gals are doing a fantastic job.

This is something we discuss at length, and we try to be impartial to level play count or a creator's name. We simply play all levels posted in the Showcase thread (usually when their play count is still very low), and vote on our experience.

When a level gets enough positive votes it is added to the Spotlight thread, sometimes a week and a half before we publish.

Due to this deadline; many levels we play, vote on and pick, then add to the thread, then write reviews for, then get ready for publishing, are not Mm picked this time.

We are finishing off an episode, and playing levels for the next one before it is published, with Mm Picks being announced on Friday, and us publishing on the weekend, the thread is pretty much in lock down. Hubbie has been dragged away from the cake station long enough to make the Hub, and it to can't have too many changes as it needs to be published within a specific window to be added to the Newsfeed by Mm.

I think the main thing to note and take away from all this, is that there is no set number of levels that we picked, so one level does not take a 'spot' away from any other level, so if we ignored an Mm pick it wouldn't mean another level would take it's place, it would just mean one less level in the Episode.

We feel that it is good to celebrate that a LBPC member gets an Mm pick, and that the Creator should also be recognised by the community they participate in.

We hold all spotlighted levels with the same esteem as an Mm pick that appears by their side (which I believe includes one of your levels Liquid). Also, we tend to follow the logic that a level can garner more than one award.

Like a movie that wins an Oscar, it doesn't get disqualified from winning a golden globe as well. Also, sometimes (like in this Episode), an Mm picked level does not get spotlighted, we have actually only given an honourable mention to some in the past.

I hope this helps, also... I should mention that due to my schedule I tend to only be able to play Spotlighted levels, so if it only gets an Mm pick I may miss out!

Ah thanks for the info Mr_Fusion. I did think there was a set number of 'slots' available, so I'm happy to hear that's not the case. I did notice there seemed to be quite a bit fewer levels this time around, so that explains it.

No, none of my levels has ever received an MM Pick. I think maybe I don't share the same design priorities as popular opinion. Even Petal Gear - which I had considered my personal best work to date - was only good for an honourable mention on here. :/

I'd also like to add (although I probably shouldn't) that the LBPC Spotlight is not, and has never been, an article to highlight underplayed levels.

It is a spotlight of the best that the LBPC community has to offer - and as Fusion says, this judgement is made without any prejudice towards the creator behind the level. It is merely a playlist aimed at players.
