The torches you've already put down wont burn out; instead, they will all instantly become lanterns, which are an infinite light source. This also goes for torches that are stored in your inventory or boxes at the time of the update. Any torches you create AFTER the update, will indeed be a limited light source. Notch has stated all of this directly. THANK GOD
