No it doesn't - it's relatively small actually. Mine are 4.6MB per backup.
does it take up alot of memory?
Go to the game save data folder on the HDD highlight the LBP data, press triangle, choose copy, then select the usb or flash drive you have put in the controller slot, then it will copy over. You can periodically backup and then move the PS3 folder it creates on the drive onto a computer to keep it on file. To replace it just reverse the process.
