  1. Haha okay, I haven't really used the visitor messages thing much so I don't know how much is too much . I should start using it more and adding friends...

Yeah I completely agree about Powell.

I actually watched a featurette thing on a LOST Blu-ray with Giacchino talking about how he makes the music for LOST. He said that he often composes while watching the episode, composing whatever he feels at the time of the scene. Not sure if most film composers go about it that way, but it definitely seems to work for him!
    Enterprising Young Men is amazing...

Me and my brother actually blast film music through our home most mornings and evenings. Sometimes when people come to our house they can hear the music from all the way out on the road, and ask us how our neighbors let us play it so loud. Frankly, I'm not sure - but I'm not complaining!

Me and my brother have also gotten into reliving the old times (ie when we were kids ) by listening to songs from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Junglebook, and other kids movies - not sure if you like that, but it's really lots of fun!
  2. Nono, I don't mind!! It's an interesting conversation

Yes, Harry Gregson-Williams is one of the masters when it comes to scoring animated films.
He did some great favours for Dreamworks films in the past.

Not all of Giacchino's tracks are that good without the visuals (except maybe his entire Ratatouille score)
But he does indeed know how to make a good character theme. He also has a great sense of timing with inserting small ques during action scenes.
Heck, I just listened to Enterprising young men to wake me up in the morning, haha!!

There are also the hit/miss composers such as John Powell.
Powell scores seem to switch from brilliance to plain and boring.

He is at his best when he is scoring for animated films.
The entire "we are here" piece and "mountain chase" tracks from Horton Hears a Who come to mind.
  3. Yeah I prefer John William's older scores as well. I think the original three Star Wars are my favorite film score. But the Sinbad score by Harry Gregson-Williams is really really amazing too. Also definitely in my very top favorites.

It's hard to say who I'm most influenced by. I can't really narrow it down to one or two. I think probably that my four most influential are John Williams, Danny Elfman, Michael Giacchino, and my composition teacher David Logan! But I mean, I listen to film music so much now, I think everyone's influencing me at least a bit :P
Hopefully out of all that will come my own style as it evolves a bit more

I think Giacchino for me is the new Williams. Although personally I think the music isn't as good to listen to by itself (although it's still amazing), Giacchino has a great sense for character themes, and when to bring in a new theme or bring back an old one. I also find he likes to reiterate his main theme multiple times in different ways.

...Haha I'm filling up your visitor messages with lengthy film music discussionings! I hope that's OK
  4. Your dream is to become a music composer, I very much respect that.
I'm one of those people who can make music in my mind but did not have the teachings to write it down and so forth.

Who is your biggest influence if I may ask?

My favourite soundtrack from the last few months is without a doubt Giacchino's score for Star Trek.
He really brought back some of that magic in some places that is sorely lacking in films these days.
Okay, Williams still does it but he has evolved over the years.
I still prefer Williams' older scores. I think (especially on the sw-prequels) he overused the chorus in a lot of tracks nowadays.
  5. That's awesome! Any other suggestions for soundtracks that I didn't have up there?

Also that's probably about the same ratio for me. Although maybe nowadays it's more like 80% to 20% because I'm barreling towards a career in composition, so I'm listening to a lot of orchestral music, trying to really analyze it sometimes.
  6. I have all of those tracks on my pc so no problem there.
I probably have about a 70% to 30% ratio when it comes to film music to other music.

You should see my cd library of ost!! I have a lot that I bought on LP as well just because the sound has a certain quality to it that I love!!
  7. Thanks!
Haha, yeah I love film/video game music

If you haven't already, listen to all of those! The playlist is even cooler when you actually listen to it!
Most of those films/video games that are represented there also have plenty of other songs in their soundtracks that are just as awesome too, so if you like the themes, don't stop there!
  8. Hey, I just saw your movie themes thread!!
I think I love you now!!
