ESP has been popular for a long time, but until recently didn't make much in the way of affordable guitars, because until the launch of the Ltd. line maybe 5 years ago, they were all hand built in the USA (at $2500+). Metallica have been signature ESP artists since the 80s... Anyways, that's probably why you never heard of them - they aren't really stocked by guitar stores since they are considered too high end for common stock (special order only). The Ltd. guitars on the other hand are assembled in Korea, and so are much cheaper to make.
I've started reading some reviews on ultimate-guitar.com and what have you, and the ESP is starting to win me over. It might just be the fact that I have never heard of ESP guitars, weird maybe, but it is starting to win me over. If it really isn't all that different from the Ibanez, I'll probably get it, since it does look better, and it is cheaper.
I really wouldn't say for certain that the Ibanez is better. I've been an Ibanez fan since the day I started playing electric, and I've played dozens of them. ESP makes some of the best guitars out there, and when I was in the market for another Ibanez a few years ago I ended up buying an ESP instead. I've played $3000 jacksons and hated them, and same for PRS. To me, ESPs *feel* like an Ibanez, only a bit more solid (heavier) which is good for tone. And the active pickups (EMG 81 & 85) on my ESP (MH-400) are much thicker yet just as hot as the DiMarzio (Breed) on my Ibanez Jem. Countless virtuoso guitarists go for Ibanez, and lots of metal guys for ESP. You'll have to try them both side by side and see which you prefer.
I'm still torn between the two, I mean I really like how the ESP looks, a lot nicer, and the maple neck is mostly why. But a lot of the people I've shown the two are telling me the Ibanez is better, I don't know you seem like you know a lot more about guitars then them though. I'll just have to play them I guess. ..Let's just hope I have time, and they have them at the center.
