Yeah.. the G25 moves with the wheel. That is what I am used to, but wow.. it does look cool.
Ya, it certainly ain't cheap. If it lasts a good while though it may be worth it. Depending on the situation yes, you're absolutely right about the stationary paddle shifters. Wheel-mounted shifters generally are better I think, but it's mostly a preference thing. I've run into a couple situations where those are awkward as well. The chicane at Monza comes to mind - you need to upshift as you exit, and while you aren't at lock your arms are very much crossed up trying to hit that right-hand (er... left-hand now) paddle. I use the sequential knob sometimes instead in those situations.
ack.. very pricey indeed! I wish the paddle shifters followed the wheel. That is a bit clunky if you are doing like Monaco and going through Loews (Turn 6) where you have to hit a left turn at full lock while you attempt to finish downshifting. (oops!)
It's something like $600, and that's before you buy the separate gate shifter. I do know it's belt driven and that it has a pretty beefy motor - it's supposed to be relatively free of backlash as well. I'm with you that I'd like to check it out in person first... Hopefully a Best Buy or Gamestop around gets a demo sometime soon. In the meantime, here's that video I mentioned. For now the wheel is only compatible with GT5, but windows drivers are coming soon apparently.
