Well, I make all my drawings myself, and use Google images to search up a background, some helpfull things that I Google are:
"Rendered" *colour/object here*
"Color Theme (E.G. Electro, forest, Space, ect)"
Thats about all
All my avatars and signatures use GIMP 2.6, It's great Free editing program and is defently worth checking out

To draw my current, "Ranger Sackboy" avatar + signature I used a program called Paint.net, Its basicly a lower level Free Photoshop thats Quite easy, like paint to use, it has a fair amount of setbacks, especially when using the line tool and the fill bucket tool
