Round Two of the Drum Competition

Rate this Entry
Before you read this, I want you to know that this is simply an account of what happened last night during a drum competition. It's just FYI

Some of you may know that I entered myself into the Guitar Center Drum Off Competition. If you've read one of my previous blog posts you know that I won round one and moved on to the store finals (I posted a video there as well). Well, last night was round two, the store finals!

There were originally 6 contestants left for the store finals. One got disqualified because he never showed up! So the 5 of us picked numbers out of a hat to see what order we would perform. Unfortunately, I picked #1. If you've ever been in a competition, you know that you usually don't want to go first lol

Anyway, I kicked the whole thing off. I didn't feel comfortable, the nerves were getting to me, and for some reason I couldn't do things that I had just been playing hours before at home. All in all, everybody really liked what I did, but I wasn't happy. We musicians are always our own worst critics

The other 4 guys went and did pretty well. After they were done, the judges left the room to talk about who they thought should win. After a couple minutes they came back with the results. I was nervous, and honestly didn't expect to win ... if your luck is anything like mine, then you tend to never win anything

The announcer stepped up to the mic and said, "Drum roll please.......*drum roll*........and the winner, of the 2009 store finals is........Powershifter!"

lol ok, he didn't actually say 'Powershifter.' But he did say my name, which was pretty awesome. There were several prizes - I won't list them all now, but if you'd like to know just ask in the comments below.

So what does this mean? This means that I get to go to Philadelphia, PA and perform with 8 other drummers in the district finals. The competition bracket goes like this: Local, District, Regional, National. The district competition is on November 5th. There will definitely be some tough competition there, so wish me luck! I'll post a video here of last night's solo in a couple days for you to see. Someone else video taped it for me and I won't see them until Sunday.

So, yeah, yesterday was a great day. Not only did I win the competition, but I also received my copy of Uncharted 2 in the mail. So tonight will consist of practicing drums, Uncharted 2, Stargate Universe, then back to Uncharted 2

Thanks to everyone who said 'good luck' to me, and keep wishing me luck because I'll need it

Peace.
