SO i have this impossible dilemma. I can't create, not literally, but..

(im going step by step now)

1: I start by moving the entrance higher up and surround it with cardboard structures, somtimes i place it far right so the level is more "original" going from right to left.

2: I try to think of some gameplay, then i either bring up the music sequencer or some interactive music. and waste 5 hours listening to/create music.

3: i Smack myself in the face and try to concentrate. I start with a fancy little intro scene for the entrance, thinking of a little story for it all.

4: after adding details ontop of details to the entrance i throw myself at the wall to once again concentrate on the gameplay. And finally start creating something.

5: While bug testing the ONE obstacle i got i realise it's way to easy, then i add details to it...

6: Taking a break for a week.

7: After a week i look back at the level and goes "FINISH IT!" I jump into the level ready to create, and instantly open music sequensers again.

8: After a little less than a week i get back to my ONE obstacle and add a little difficulty to it, a friend wants to join all of the suddden, together we play through the obstacle and so i realise it's now instead way too HARD. and not only that but it's impossible to get through if you're more than one player, wich mean i have to restrict the level to one player, wich would mean i have to make something awesome to make up for it, like a epic boss battle. And so i start making designs for the evil-doer that will eventuelly turn out to be the last boss BUT after a while i open up my inventory to play some music and a week later i just look at the level and think "heck, i'll just start over"

BLAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGHHHUUUUUUEEEERRRRBBBBBLL YYYYYYYYYIIIIIIEEEYYRRFFYYFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF F- *boom*

This isn't the first time either, more like the 10th. (honestly) I also know none here can actually help me, but i just feel like i have to complain about it. feels good to rage it all out.

Hahah, happens to most people I think! Hitting a mental wall or getting brunt out :s

What I find most odd is that time away from the game doesn't recharge the batteries (for me, anyway). Other games, if I was away from them for awhile I'd come back have some ideas in my head ready to go, not with LBP. Instead I come back and I'm trying to remember what I was doing, what I was aiming for and what is this mess I looking at (trying to figure out ur own logic is not a good sign!!).

I need to be in the right mood and sometimes out of nowhere my brain gets overloaded with ideas and I can't stop creating, staying up crazy late just getting as much out while the flow is going...

And yes, it's good to vent! Gl getting past it, maybe try some random lvls to get inspired? ...

Neither do i manage to "recharge my batteries" if i've been away from the game a week or two, good thing i don't forget the logic behind my level though :] i agree it would suck tying to figure out how it works xD

When i run out of insperation i usually play some of my favorite levels, often mnniskas levels since the visual design of his is like a colourful dream on cardboard doodles. however after many levels i end up getting emotional how i fail with level creation

I think this happens to everybody. But here's what I do to alleviate the situation, or at least what has alleviated my most recent situation. Maybe it'll work for you too!

When I start a level it's because I have a ideas I want to include. But that's all they are, just ideas. I started on my most recent level by making the opening area, which I finished, then just got stuck. I knew what I wanted to do but didn't know how to go about it. After about a week of getting nowhere I decided to get my pen and paper out and started designing rooms around the concepts I knew I wanted to include. Once they were done I then drew an overall map of the level showing how each room connected, and annotated the key features showing how they interact with each other. I had drawn up a plan, and while it was still pretty basic (no visuals or shapes were designed, it was simply concepts) I then had a goal. Weirdly, once I knew exactly what I was working towards it started flowing. Not only that, I could also work in a non-linear fashion as I knew how the whole thing was going to end up so I could pick and choose which piece to work on - ultimately bringing all the pieces together when finished.

I find it's pretty daunting and likely not the best method to branch from your spawn point and from doing the previous level in the series this way I see first hand how much more smoothly this second level is coming together.

So give that a try, whip out your pen and paper and start drawing up plans, it may work for you too!
