Ps3 Controller question

Does my ps3 have to be on for it to charge my controller?

Or, you can get a charging station. I got one when it was mispriced at Best Buy for like 12 bucks.

I charge it through my Wii. The USBs are always on. Good old Nintendo, thinking about the planet. :)
