Don't think so - it's not a very loud sound so you can try hiding it with something else. Otherwise you are stuck with the "bog of eternal stench", sadly :(
I was thinking of this the other day, the sound of flies buzzing around can ruin the atmosphere of your level. To shut it up would be a good option, but its unlikely it will be put in the game. Tweakable materials???
Put a rocket and put the engine to about the left end.
Then it'll make the sound go away but make the water steamy. :D
I have just done some testing, if you have the MGS pack then listen up.
Make glass into plasma, then make the shape of plasma material really big, as big as the stretch of water, then make it really thin so you can barely see it but its still there, then spam it with the water/rain or w/e sound effect you want, cover the whole thing up with invisible sound effects, then you wont hear the plasma. It'll sound like w/e sound effect you put :P
Remember the L3 copy trick.
And the problem with leonardo's idea is that you can hear the rocket.
Yeah, it would be good to turn the gas sounds off, as it can sometimes ruin the level's atmosphere, but as already suggested, just use water sounds to cover it up.
Everything with a default sound should have it tweakable. Plasma, fire, gas, sticker switches, paintball switches...
You hear me MM? YOu just scurry along and roll that in with my Sound and Music pack please (not the Sound of Music pack though, I don't really fancy that one :p)
Quite right rtm and the speakers should have a tweakable radius too.
BTW I've played levels before where there has been gas but no sound because I remember thinking "How did they make gas without that horrible buzzing flies sound". Can't remember what levels offhand though.
It's possible to remove the sound if you don't want the gas to be visible. Use the invisible mateiral trick (Thin line + Rotate + Shrink) and as the gas shrinks it'll get quieter and quieter. Useful for lining hazards that don't need the gas to be visible (Pitfalls, Lasers etc). Pointless if you want the gas to be visable though.
That would be really nice! I've had luck with placing other speakers around or if anything is electrified, it tends to drown out the swarm of bees sound.
I've thought that as well. You can use a sensor switch to set a radius for a speaker, but it does seem a bit like a duplication of effort.
It does ruin the effect in some levels, I'm trying to create a vortex effect at the moment, its huge, and the sound of the flies completely ruins to immersion.
Plus, the dog has a habit of chasing flies around the room, and jumps up at the front speakers time I'm playing around in the section, confused to where the flies. One of these days he's gonna take a chuck out of one of them. ;)
