Well I already have the TV and Computer on practically 24/7 (everything important is in my room) so 1 more thing can't hurt.
I guess I can have this running whenever I'm not actually using the system.
Although. . if something goes wrong I'm blaming you guys. :)
Edit: Okay I'm in the team. It should label me as ChristmasJew (that's my PSN! O:!) although I don't think it has picked up on it yet as it's showing me as "PS3" at the moment.
well, i think they're stupid about the electricity anyway... we get our electric bills paid for by a server we have in our garage.

Just a few tips for those that are new to folding... the idea is that it uses as much of the processor as possible to work out what it's doing, but if the PS3 is busy doing other stuff, like playing music or browsing the net, that will slow down the time it takes to finish a work unit.
If you are really want to get it working as fast as is possible, then I recommend disconnecting all USB connections, turning off any controllers, and removing and discs in the tray. Just leave the program running on some sort of screen which shows the basic folding information, that will make it run as fast as possible.
You can change channels to the dedicated Folding@Home channel if you are new to the program. I think the default now is some international news channel, but there is an option to change it somewhere, just keep pressing buttons till you work it out. :)
I have all that stuff off anyway. I just leave it on the folding@home whenever I'm not using the PS3, turn off my controller and change back to the TV.Quote:

That's quite normal. The 300,000 sized units they are assigning at the moment take the average PS3 6 hours to complete. So after 16 hours, you should have finished 2 units and been half way through a third one. ;)Quote:

That's actually pretty good. Keep in mind that we are talking about MASSIVE amounts of calculations, here.
The thing is, protein chains are actually 3 dimensional, and have to be configured correctly in all 3 axis.
Anyway, Thanks for joining up! like I said before, I'm not sure there's any real advantage to joining a team aside from just being fun. This team has the advantage of being able to surf LBPC while folding by going Through the home page, under team statistics, and that's pretty cool.
I always make my comment on PS3 say "Saving The World" when I'm folding@home (aka not on PS3).

I also wish there were folding trophies. just seems like there'd be alot more folding done if we got the trophy fiends involved. lol

Yep, that's pretty much the point of this. by using distributive computing, Stanford is able to basically have a big-mother of a super-computer.
I wish I was technically savey enough to dig up the actual numbers, but honestly, I don't know how work units transfer into flops. I do know that the "work units" come in different sizes and flavors, but I'll see if I can address you question as best I can.
I'll try to break it down as best as I can with my limited understanding:
-A FLOP (FLoating point OPeration) is basically worth one addition or multiplication calculation.
- A TerraFLOP is a trillion FLOPS --- most current super-computers work in this range.
- a petaFLOP is one thousand trillion floating point operations per second. Next generation super computers are being designed to work in this range...Folding at home currently works in this range(7.26 PFLOPS, If I'm reading the charts right.)
So, Basically All this computational power is being generated by hardware that is There anyway, and would other-wise just be sitting idle.

Joined your team about a week ago, was almost done with my first unit, until i installed v3 and everything was resetted, have to start all over again now :(

I'm not sure i ever got the point of the certificates lol. If you've done the computing, you know you've done it :p
