Well, my PS3 is running very very low on space, and, what with me downloading the MAG Beta, it's in dire need of an external HardDrive. What I'd like to know is, which HDD do you recommend? I'm looking for maybe 256-512GB, most desirably compatible with both PCs and PS3, with a fast data reading/transfer time, and a price below, maybe, £70? I will be willing to extend my budget if necessary, but I figured with only 256-512GB they wouldn't be more than 70-100 pounds.

You can probably get a 1TB HDD for that money. :)
I have no idea which company makes good HHDs, though.
I highly suggest you a Western Digital at 5400 rpm to sustitute your INTERNAL hard drive.
Adding an external hard drive via USB is quite pointless imho unless you haven't loaded your PS3 with media file.

Also, OmegaSlayer, wouldn't replacing the internal hard drive cost more and be a greater risk? I'd rather get an External one, so I can use it on my laptop too.

500Gb costs around £60 you might as well spend an extra tenner and get double the storage with a 1tb for £70.
Oh just incase you don't know game data like the MAG beta cant run off external storage.
Rabid-Coot, this is why I need an external hard-drive, because my internal one is clogged up with save data etc. If I move all that across, I'll clear loads of space, so I can install more games. However, I may need to upgrade to an internal one if I get lots of high-install games D:
Dawes, external will never work.
The more time pass by, the more devs don't allow game data coming from external sources to avoid cheatings.
Then, you can't use the same drive for PS3 and PC, since PC and PS3 doesn't share the format.
I don't know the name of PS3 kind of format, but I can tell you 150000% that it's not FAT32.

And I had the same fear as you when I had to replace it, but I'm very very happy to have done it.
Go with something from Western Digital if possible; I've had good luck with them in the past. Also, their default format is FAT32 meaning that it's compatible out of the box for use with the PS3 and - depending on your OS - use with a PC. However, hard drives are becoming cheaper at an insane rate thanks to a ton of variables so you may be able to upgrade your internal HDD at some point and be able to avoid moving the external HDD between the PS3 and your PC. Again, depending on your what format your laptop HDD is, you may not be able to. PS3 requires FAT32 whereas - depending on your OS - your laptop drive might not be FAT32. If your OS is Windows then it's some version of NTFS. If you're running a flavor of Linux then it's more than likely FAT of some sort. Still not sure how you'd do it though.Quote:

I've just discovered that we have an external Hard Drive in use on our downstairs computer. Seeing as that computer is running Windows, the HDD is probably NTFS, but I can probably back up THAT HDD on my laptop, format the HDD to Fat32, backup the PS3 onto it, install the new PS3 HDD, Unpack the Backup HDD, Unpack the backup on my laptop onto the HDD, and put the HDD back on the downstairs' computer, and that's all.
Simple, right?

Might be even simpler than that! Windows can read and write to FAT32, but it just can't be installed on a FAT32 drive. Most external drives are FAT32 by default so - unless someone went out of their way to reformat it - you might have an external HDD that's ready to go as is...Quote:

FAT32 does restrict individual file sizes to 4.XGB. Annoying, but part of the system structure, but that shouldn't be a problem when it comes to what you're needing.Quote:
