PS3 Spotlight
Nocturne by IceMaiden/IceMaiden
Co-created with my son, Khalith_, this is my picture-book portrayal of 'The Firebird' story from 'Fantasia' set to the music 'Nocturne', composed by Rolf Lovland.
![]()
Stunning. Freaking. Stunning. That bird thing is definitely on fire. And did I seriously see the elk's crystalline breath in the cold? YES I DID. Nocturne is a "music" level" (can I really even call it that?) that evokes incredible emotion, not only with the music itself (a truly beautiful work by IceMaiden's son, Khalith), but with the simple, beautiful, story-book-like scenes (but don't let that scare you away from playing it!). Most of the feelings are evoked in silence as you glide past trees and life springing out of death. Nocturne is much in the fashion of games like Shadow of the Colossus or Myst--this incredible lump forms in your throat and you're not really sure why. So... if you're tired of plain ol' music levels... well, here's one from IceMaiden that breaks that trend AND adds a simple, heartfelt, beautiful story.
![]()
For those of you who have been exposed to the Fantasia experience, expect some heavy duty deja vu as you enjoy this stunning musical level from IceMaiden and her son. This beautifully crafted level stands as a fantastic tribute to one of films most classic movies. Do yourself a favor, and go enjoy its superb artistry for yourself.
![]()
I hadn't heard the fairtale that this level narrates, but that didn't stop me from understanding the beauty of this level--a beauty that does not heavily rely on words. But it's not like those words are needed; the music already tells you--somehow--the story. Few times have we seen such an excellent use of the LBP music tools, excepting IceMaiden's other levels. But don't worry, not everything is about a precious piano soundtrack; there's more. And that "more" is one of the most polished and beautiful visuals I've seen, and that I'll probably ever see. Regarding the character design, there is one thing to be told: IceMaiden ate the three layer restrictions for breakfast in her level. Seriously. They are not there, I swear. How can you make such beautiful characters, how can you absolutely ignore the three layer restrictions without a glitch? Well, I have no idea how, but I can tell you that she does. The characters look like if they were taken straight out from an illustrated book, and that, in the world of LBP, is something to admire. Yes, ok, the gameplay basically consists of riding a wooden chunk through the level, but trust me; when both your eyes and ears are that pleased, you absolutely forget about the fingers holding your controller.
![]()
Who said that you needed to see the movie to understand the plot? Take a few minutes to be dazzled! The story retolled with perfection. Indulge your senses while the fantastic characters pass you by. So sit back, kick your feet up and prepare to play a real gem of a level.
![]()
It takes quite a level to skip so quickly to Cool Pages that the spotlight team completely misses it, but this beautiful tale from IceMaiden managed it. It's no surprise how popular this is, thanks to the mystical visuals, fantastic music (courtesy of Kalith_) and exquisite story. IceMaiden hits the jackpot again, as you'll find yourself dreading the awful sound of the scoreboard getting close. Unbelievable.

You'll experience match after match of hectic fun as you grab powerups, shoot like crazy, and ensure your friends timely deaths. So if you're looking for some great multiplayer action look no further! Paintup will keep you occupied for hours!

Green! White! Blue! Red! Green again! ...that's just a few of the many colors your sackboy WON'T turn while playing this level. Yup, you heard me right. This level is actually NOT about firing at your podmate. Rather, it's about dealing as damage possible to the level itself, which admittedly, it's quite funny. "...How is that possible?" I hear you wonder. Well, because it's about firing at the environment and painting it up. Shoot those rocks above, and see your fellow sackfolk suffer an horrendous death by rock-squashing. You get the idea. And talking about ideas, whose idea could this be from? You guessed right. Mniska is know for thinking outside the box, and this level of him does not disappoint at all. It's fresh, it's fun and it's... colorful.
It's 1955 and your psychiatrist tells you there's no such thing as men from Mars, that you've been watching too many science fiction movies. Won't he be surprised when the flying saucers ATTACK. Can you defeat the Martians and save the planet, or will you end up as canned food?
Umbra Valley: A Lost Soul, and Umbra Valley: Perpetual Escape by L1GhTmArE and Sabre_/L1GhTmArE![]()
Right from the start, when you're sitting in a comfy chair in the shrink's office as he explains to you there's no such thing as aliens (and there's a UFO floating just outside the window behind him), you know this level is going to be a riot (hint: head left at the start to see the psychiatrist's somewhat suspect credentials!). Things explode, aliens attack in their purple flying saucers, and... well... you save the world (and several possibly familiar faces) in a rather comical manner. I'd rather not tell you all the jokes and funnies here... so go play the level yourself!
![]()
Right from the getgo this level is simply dripping with character, wit and humor. It's funky style and cool comedy keeps things interesting throughout, and the tricky gameplay scattered between the jokes ensure that you're always having fun. It's up to you to save the planet from being alien food, so what are you waiting for? you'd better get going!
![]()
Gah, those flying saucers really believe that the solution to all of their problems is abducting them. You forgot to wash the dishes? Abduct them. Can't stand your boss? Abduction ahead! Humanity? Abduction I say! If you are sick of this behaviour--and I can assure you I am--this level offers you the opportunity to get rid of those tiring green aliens by pressing an enormous red button. What more could we ask for? Little, that's for sure. This level starts with a visit to your psychiatrist in which he tells you that flying saucers do not exist (am I the only one bothered by him denying such an obvious truth?), continues with a massive martian attack, and ends with you entering an enormous UFO. Polished visuals, outstanding gameplay and fabulous humour. I just can't encourage you enough to go and play thi-*abducted*
![]()
Whoa! What a blast to the past! You are not going crazy, those really are aliens! Wacky wit is hiding around every corner, while the thrilling gameplay is not too far behind. Watch your back, flying saucers are out to get you! Oh, and don't forget to save the human race in this retro platformer that is sure to be memorable.
Story co-created with Sabre_. Sackboy has died... but he gets a second chance at life! Embark on a journey of umbra to get him/her back to where they belong.(watch video)
LBL: 4 in 1 - Gundam Shark Survival Hunter by Donkey show/gevurah22![]()
In a superb style that reminded me of the hit indie game Limbo, Umbra Valley takes you on an adventure through one of the most interesting atmospheres I've seen in ages. The intriguing back story and some incredibly well done and unexpected changes in environments are the key to these levels' engaging atmosphere. The fantastic gameplay only helps to make the experience even greater, so make sure this is one level series you don't miss! It's a classic!
![]()
Just when I was wondering about my reasons to stay away from death, these levels come come along. Perfect timing, really. They really provided plenty of reasons... to die. So, what happens when you die? I'll tell you what: frantic gameplay. Puzzles. Creepy visuals. Engaging story. And more. Really, more. I've got to be forgetting something, because there can't only be that in two whole levels. Yeah, you heard me right. What's better than an awesome level? Well, two awesome levels. Something that I really need to bring to light is that these levels pull off one of the best atmospheres I've seen. Everything in them feels so dead, so forgotten. As if it's been there since always but nobody ever noticed, until you get to go through it. But enough of me telling you how worthy these levels are. Die and discover yourself.
Time to take it to the sharks in this ultimate shark survival level. Use the Crossbone Gundam to annihilate these pesky sharks that constantly pester the LittleBigPlanet community with awesome weaponry! With a sweet ranking system that tallies your shark kill count, aim for the top for the best prize and bragging rights!(watch video)
LBL: 4 in 1 ATTENDER-ALLIANCE (co-op) by (___NEO___)/o___NEO___o![]()
Isn't it about time we started showing the sharks whose boss? I mean, for months they've been harassing us in a never ending line of survivals, so it feels great to take to the skies and put them in their place! Sharp, intuitive controls and some fantastically flashy visuals keep this survival challenge moving at a great pace. The prize system and fun factor also make this a level a guaranteed replay and guaranteed hit.
![]()
Good job, good job. Yeah, what an awesome level. Perfect. ...Enough please. Enough making all of us feel like noobs since your Azure Palace level. It's not fair. Here we are, sweating to create our platforming levels and you come and shove this flawless level onto our platform shaped faces. Gevurah22 never fails to bend the LBP rules at his will, and this level is a clear example of rule-bending. Forget about your typical sackboy... this time you play as a deadly mech that goes around fighting sharks. Yes, sharks. The enemies here are plasma firing sharks. And I'm glad that the creator decided so, because ever since those sharks survivals came out I've been aching to take revenge on them. This level provides the perfect chance for it. So, go ahead and unleash your anger against those horrible fishes!
This is my entry for the LittleBigLand 4 in 1 Epic-Ness competition. It's a pure co-op level and I'm very proud to get this baby finished just in time.
LBL 4 in 1 - Archaic Ascension by Duffluc/Duffluc![]()
The joy of overcoming a difficult obstacle in LBP is only surpassed by one thing, and that's the joy of overcoming it with the help of friends! This sublimely designed co-operative level sports great, clean visuals and some very creative puzzles, so if you've got a friend handy then drag them in here and go have yourself a blast.
![]()
You know it when you play them; you know it when you see a good co-op level, and this one embodies all of that. Creative puzzles are the main characters, and cool visuals are the supporting cast. But don't be turned away by my bad metaphors! Grab a friend, slap him/her, grab him/her again and take 'em to this fantastic co-op level. You won't regret it; you'll both have a great time. ...Unless your friend decides to take revenge on you for that slap...
My entry for the LBL 4 in 1 epic-ness competition. After a bit of a rough crash landing, Sackboy stumbles upon a tall, imposing gothic structure. Could this me the Mm Tower everyone is talking about?(watch video)
LBL: 4 in 1- The 2151 Aerostation Project : Endurance Edition by Asbestos101/Asbestos101![]()
Yet another entry into the LBL 4 in 1 competition, and this one's a doozie. It's absolutely gorgeous... it looks and plays many times better than the beginning and ending provided for the contest. You crash at the feet of the icy ruins of what might just be the Media Molecule tower. From then on, you work your way through some beautiful, beautiful puzzles, including one of those rotating ones (built looking like an awesome stone Celtic knot) and a mirror puzzle (I'm positive Duffluc was channeling the similar puzzle from the Wind Waker!). And you know that really overused lonely-sounding song? It actually fits this time, giving you a sense of wonder and chills as you climb to the top. Give this forsaken tower a go, because you won't regret it.
![]()
Just when you think that you already had enough of plane crashes and trips to the Mm towers, this level comes out. It forces you to play through the pre-created segments just to enjoy the trip in-between. And before you ask, yes, it's worth it. It really is. Duffluc pulls out some amazing architecture in a highly fitting environment, and makes the whole place truly feel desolated and alone. What I'm trying to say is that the visuals are amazing, and what's even more important here, they make sense and fit really well. But let's not forget other important aspects which the creator has also tried to stress here: the puzzles. And they are quite innovative. For example: some rotating circular shapes, which are both complicated and enjoyable. Last but not least, the gameplay also shines in this one; making your journey through this abandoned tower very enjoyable. Do please travel again to the Mm towers; not because of the destination but because of the path that leads to it.
As the most punishing Aerostation yet, the Endurance Edition pits competitors against an ever changing, endless obstacle course.
King Quest. (3 levels) by ferrrch/ferrrch![]()
If there's one thing I hate, it's a good survival challenge. The second would be an incredibly high score posted by the level author that I just can't seem to beat! Asbestos' addictive new entry into his astounding Aerostation Project levels keeps things fresh and fun with a really cool randomized obstacle course that never ends! Just don't expect to get away with only giving this one go! (I think my play count was around 86?)
![]()
It's definitely lost. Sadly, this is not the first time... It actually already happened to me with all the previous Aerostation projects. What did I lose? An entire hour of my life. And I should know better by now. Whenever I see some burnt cotton, hear sackboy falling from impossible heights, smell sweaty fingers and feel the frustration and excitation all around, I should know that I'm approaching another Aerostation project. And this time, It was the most unforgiving--but still fair--of them all. See, my trick to get through these was dying many times until I finally knew exactly what to do in every section. But this time, I can't. I just can't. There's a randomiser preventing me from doing that, and when I noticed and tried to run back to the entrance checkpoint and get back to the safety of my pod, I saw it. It was red, the color of unforgiveness. It didn't speak, but if it did, it would have said "No turning back, darling". A laser. It was a laser. An enormous vertical laser forcing me to choose between death or death. I chose death. The right one. You should too.
The kingdom is in trouble and is sackboy duty to help the queen. This is a 3 level long series reminiscent of the gardens theme. Lots of fun platforming and bubble combos!
Enter the 36 Chambers Disc 1 by NinjaMicwz/NinjaMicwz![]()
Ferrrch's newest entries into his expanding portfolio of great levels are great fun to play through. The King Quest series pulls off a very professional 'gardens theme' look and feel, and the well designed platforming will keep you awake and alert as you play through this fun and lengthy adventure.
![]()
Even if these series consists of three full fledged levels, I still beg for more. And, in all honesty, I don't know why. I mean, the visuals were good, and so was the gameplay. The story also was pretty cool, and the character design was also pretty well done. I guess I mean to say that these levels have a severe lack of something... and that something is flaws. There are no let downs here. The levels play perfectly, and look exactly like you would like them to look. Besides, they are neither too short nor too long... they really are the perfect length. Seeing how flawlessly executed this project was, you can really tell that ferrrch has really put the necessary thought into this project. These levels are up there with the Mm ones, sharing their charm. And that is saying a lot.
Fatal flying Guillotine: I've always wanted to do a ninja level, so here it is, Ninja-style. Alot of work and expirimentation has gone into the aesthetics, architecture, and detail to give the level a very unique and pleasing look, but the focus here is platforming, gameplay, variety, fun, replay value and score optimization(watch video)
Sack in a Box by Malhat06/Malhat06![]()
Now here's a tricky level! NinjaMicwz has created a platforming masterpiece that, while difficult, is a joy to play and will leave you feeling accomplished when you make it to the finish line. The unique and engaging visuals and atmosphere are also sure to impress. Make sure to give this one a go!
![]()
There is nothing that I enjoy more than oriental themed levels. No, wait, I got it wrong. I actually enjoy it more when levels put your skills to test. No, wait, what am I saying? The levels that I enjoy the most are those that, at this stage of LBP's life, manage to pull off a new visual style. Well... I might even prefer levels with a perfectly designed difficulty curve. Bah, who cares. I've already found the solution to this internal debate of mine. And that solution is NinjaMicwz's latest creation. I don't think I can recall how many times was I chopped to pieces why mumbling "ah, now that's inventive". And even if there aren't actually 36 chambers, this level is still worth a shot, and two, and three, and thirty-six. Put your skills to test with this level, and chances are that you'll discover, as I did, that I actually have none.
Find your way out of a box and enjoy the card contraptions. This is just continuing my love of the basic materials that LBP has to offer. Iv'e tried to incorporate lots of different contraptions and platforming aspects, some borrowed and some new and have just mashed them all together to create what I hope is a fun level.
Caventure by apb-andi/apb-andi![]()
Who says cardboard levels can't look great? Mahat06's newest level explores what's possible with the one material, and pulls off a great look through superb stickering and the genius use of yellow paint. The cool addition of the 'scissors' really add a new level of depth to the game play and make this level as unique as it is awesome.
![]()
If there was a way to shake away from my head the idea that cardboard themed levels are already overused, it was this one. The fact that the creator decided to focus much more on the gameplay than on the looks of the level really makes it a joy to play. It's fast, it's frantic, and it's made of cardboard, which tends to burst into flames, making for interesting gameplay. The "cutting cardboard" is also a nice addition, making fresher a level that already feels new. I'd like to point out something: this level has no story... but a story isn't needed. Instead, it is straight to the point: having a good time, and I'm glad for it.
Nobody will survive.(watch video)
Beneath the Machine (Pinball) by smasher1973/smasher1116789![]()
Hey look. A cave! Lalala... it's freaking dark in here. What's this? *Pulls sponge**Flaming light appears and rolls away, illuminating the cavern for a brief moment.* What would your reaction be? Mine was... FOLLOW THAT LIGHT!!! apb-andi's brilliant gameplay elements almost had me giggling. And I don't giggle. I don't. But when the platforms pop out of the flaming rocks below, or as you swing away from the advancing wall of fire (there's a lot of fire!), you'll be hard pressed not to show your appreciation, too. So you're not allowed to make fun of me. Not for this, anyway. Play it! Delve into the cave! apb-andi claims nobody will survive... will you?
![]()
Is it a cave? Is it and adventure? No! It's a Caventure! Sorry... I had to say it. Ok, straight to the point: this is a very well done cave level with a twist at the end. It features some amazing architecture and does a great job providing the kind of gameplay that never gets old: the fun one! The level does a great job with relying on physics for certain elements; you'll see what I mean when you arrive at the submerged part. But it's not only about physics; it's about everything. The creator creates gameplay out of anything, and man, he does it well. And just when you think that it couldn't be better, it gets better, with the appearance of an unexpected boss. Put on your platforming boots and enjoy this Caventure!
![]()
What do you get when you combine a cave and a sense of adventure? A tricky, atmospheric and all around great level! This fun platformer will have you explore the depths of a cave and discover a secrets about this place along the way, in the form of old ruins and a very unexpected foe. An unlockable hard mode adds to the tension and makes this level a really accomplishment to get through in one piece. Your adventure through this cave will be one ripe with peril and death, and fun!
This is a pinball game with a machine theme. It has exiting graphics, and lighting. With unlock-able sections, free ball opportunities, and even multiball. Unfortunately I fear most people won't see the best parts of this level, due to its difficulty. But for the non-pinball lover, I think they can still have some fun in here.
Also from the Showcase...![]()
Ah, the flickering, flashing lights of pinball. There is nothing like loading up a little ball, springing it out of its comfortable home, and watching it bounce and dash frantically about. Smasher1116789 (that's a lot of numbers...) has captured this perfectly in his new level, Beneath the Machine. Simple controls (seriously... just R1! And not even spamming it!) and good camera work only add to the experience of glee. He even includes secret areas that exponentially make your score explode with awesome! It may take a few tries to get used to, but if you're like me, you'll be grinning like an idiot all the same. Smasher claims the secret areas might be too hard to get to, but I found a few on my second try. I was like, "What... what just happened? Ahh! Awesome!" A highly polished, joyful little level. Everyone should play it! And again! And again! And again!
![]()
Never have I been a fan of pinball, but even I have to admit that this is pure genius. In every pinball LBP game that I've seen, the camera was an issue. However, here, it's the main feature. It's a non-issue. Of course, that it isn't the only thing that makes this level absolutely great; it has much to do with the intricate, yet arcade-classic design of the level. It really does look like a pinball machine, and, even more important, it really does play like one. But please, don't forget to notice the secret areas; they are an absolute blessing when it comes to pump up your score, besides playing fantastically. Do also notice the intelligent mechanics going on on it, such as the bumpers that expand in order to propel the pinball. All in all, this level, besides playing perfectly, is the closest recreation of a pinball game that I can think of, and I applaud Smasher1116789 (that really is a lot of numbers) for it.
![]()
Most pinball levels I've seen take one of two approaches. Either they put you, the player, inside the ball to be recklessly thrown about, or they keep the action in one screen so as not to zone out the player from their hiding spot. This pinball level, however, uses a brilliant system to teleport the player to wherever they need to be so that they always get the most out of the action! Great special effects, some cool secrets and brilliant design make this one of the best pinball levels out there, hands down.
