My PS3 Died

Okay I need some help with my PS3.

(Not Ylod or normal Bsod)

Problem: No video output.
Symptoms: Turns on as per normal, males all the right beeps and whirs. No signal.
Tested: TV = Fine, Cables = Fine

I'm using the composite RCA cables as I do not have an HDMI device to plug into or any other form of input. I cannot afford a new PS3 or even the repair @ $315.

I have tried the "Black Screen of Death" turn it off/on wait for 3 beeps method to bring up the safety mode screen, but not even that works.

It is out of warranty and if I have to remove the HDD I will lose all my data (auto re-format).
I have taken it to pieces, removed everything and seen no sign of damage. Put it back together and have the same issue (yes it still turns on even after I disassembled it!).

OPTIONS??

Does anyone know if I can access the HDD via the network to access my backed up LBP levels? I have a linux box I can use to do this if possible.

Even better. Is there anyway I can fix this?

Maybe the problem is the TV itself? Sorry, I don't know much else other than that.

Try using a composite connection.

I have no idea what your problem is......but it sounds to me like it could some sort of internal wiring problem. Like when the wires get pulled out of whatever they're connected to, but remain unnoticed because of the rubber insulation. Maybe that's the problem?? Since you say that everything looks fine, even after taking it apart and putting it back together. Either way, that sucks :( I'm no expert (Not even close!!)so don't take any action from the words above. :) Hope you find out how to fix it.

Do you have anything else you can plug into your tv to see if it works? Or a different tv?
The plugin for the video on your tv might be busted. Thats what happened to me a few years ago, had to replace the tv :/

Not a wiring problem, inside the PS3 there are very few wires:

You have the mini ribbon that connects the BR player.
Power connections to the BR.
Power from the power supply to motherboard.
Earth cable,
Power from socket to power supply,
And a tiny one that goes to what looks like a tiny wifi receiver board

Hmm... don't know what could be the problem. If worse comes to worse, I think you should be able to swap the hard drive with another PS3 without having to reformat it.

Also just to note, there's a distinct difference between component and composite connections. I'm assuming you meant composite.

yes..... as stated previously not a TV issue.

I am in-fact a a tech geek (otherwise I wouldn't have pulled it apart) and have decided that the only real solution is to find another junk PS3 and make a new one.

My main concern is that when a hard drive is removed and re-inserted I have been told that the PS3 auto formats the drive whether you like it or not. So I'm after a hacking solution to access all the HDD info remotely from my linux laptop via the Eth0 connection.

Have you tried holding the power button down when you switch on to reset the video settings?

Just making sure, you probablty already checked, but just getting it out of the way.

Have you checked that the cables aren't damaged?
Usually being bent , twisted or crushed(under objects) causes them to malfunction, heck sometimes they just break for no reason.

Have you tried it with other similar cables or something?

Unless someone has a better idea I'm going to try to build a new PS3 out of old busted ones.

What I want is a linux master that can give me some terminal commands to copy all the PS3 HDD data remotely via ethernet onto a 1.5TB HDD that I have ready and formatted with the correct file system.

Video reset is two beeps not three.

Hold on. The HDD is basically the same size and connection as a laptop HDD, right? Could you use a laptop and connect with some sort of adapter and copy all data without changing it? I don't really know but I was told that the HDD is the same as a laptop one.

I've never heard of the PS3 auto-formatting a drive already formatted for the PS3. I think it only auto-formats it if its not already formatted for the PS3. Actually, I've swapped drives between my PS3 and have never had a problem.

ahh, ok i see. The data on a PS3 hard drive is encrypted, so if you were to swap drives between ps3's they wouldn't match up so you would be forced to reformat it. If you have an external hard drive, you could try ragnarok's suggestion and try to find your way to the backup utility and back up the system to the external. If you want, I could give you instructions on how to navigate to it.

Alternatively, you could buy a laptop hard drive external enclosure and transfer the files from the hard drive to a computer. No clue on how to do it over a network tho.

Enlong3, yes you can swap hard drives on your ps3, thats no problem, the problem cames in when you take the hard drive of your ps3 into another ps3, the ps3 assigns a code format to the harddrive very specific for the console, so when you put it into another ps3 this one cant get the data because of the code format and reformats to its own code, thus deleting all data.

To thread poster, If your ps3 is working it means that only the video output has the problem i would recommend to go "blind" look for the specific movements of the joystick so you can reach the backup utility and intitate it directly (it sounds crazy but it might work as your ps3 has only the problem with the AV output and not the internal hardware or software), otherwise you can connect your ps3 harddrive into a linux desktop directly to its hard drive (not sure how to make it, ive done it with windows, and connected an old windows 95 desktop hard drive into a windows XP desktop hard drive while the machine was running and could back up some data), also be warned that the ps3 information is not very clear, you will be struggling with lots of wierd looking files with coded file names, also take into mind that it will be information like the games, the firmware, and all, and you cant really tell which is which.

ok holding the power button DOES NOT WORK!!! and the video reset IS 3 beeps 1 beep followed by a double beep... That is 3 beeps!! 3 close together is an error. Plz don't insult my intelligence!

I think I could navigate blindly but I wouldn't know how many presses of the joystick and in which direction to do it! I would be backing it up to an external USB HDD

Well, lets at least try this method first. First, I would do a clean restart of the system to ensure that there are no error message screens on the PS3 when you start it up.

Then make sure that the only USB device attached to the PS3 is the hard drive. Next we will follow the sequence to start a backup. Make sure to do this only after the PS3 has just been restarted.
