Sackboy 3D Model

Hi there fellow LBP lovers, for those of you who don't know me, I'm Rob, I'm a budding 3D artist (which probably explains my love of all things LBP), who wishes one day to work for Media Molecule :P anyway onto the point of this post. I have just finished a personal project, took me about 2 hours from start to finish, it's a 3D model of Sackboy. I've tried to remain as faithful to the original as possible and I will probably rig him (for those of you who don't know this means add an invisible skeleton that allows posing and animation) and can therefore animate or posed him in any given position. So if anyone has a specific pose or action you would like him to do post it here and if it takes my fancy I may just furfill that request ;), oh and here's a couple of renders for ya.

That's real impressive - A lot more accurate than most 3D models of Sackboy I've seen. Although, the only problem I see is that his arms should be a little higher up, and a bit bigger. It only took you two hours?! Man...
What program did you use?

OMG, that's full of epic, unlike the Internet which is filled with cookies and fail. (and dem sheep)

Wow - pretty impressive in 2 hours!!

I tried doing a version in 3DS Max, but got very stuck at the peltmapping stage - hence no stitching :( and very poor texture

I did however manage to rig it so I have a poseable character.

Shame I couldn't finish it...

Holy sh...That looks complicated...Is that the rigging?

Looks cool rhy, although only the head on mine's peltmapped, the easiest way I find is to do a really low poly version, create the UV by hand and then add detail to the model afterwards, that way you get a really consistent UV map although it requires a lot of planning, and as for rigging the easiest way is biped rigging, tweaking envelopes and vertex weighting

Yeah -the "bones" are actually quite simple to do as you get an adjustable biped. The problem is the "area of effect" which dictates how much of the model the bones warp.

You think that's complex? try peltmapping lol. Peltmapping is flattening out the surface so you can apply a texture to it. Arrgghhh!

I just couldn't figure how to do a good UV. Weirdly, my problem was the mouth on the head!

Second problem was that mine had a lot of subserfing (as you can see)

Yeah although peltmapping is a lot easier to get your head around, with the rigging it's all about vertices more than envelopes which most tutorials don't go into detail about or even mention but it's all fun! And in case anyone was wondering, yes my dream would be to work for MM one day :love:

Whoa, I only used the envelopes - which wasn't exactly intuative. TBH, I'm using Blender more now because I found it so tricky to get used to the UI. V2.55 Beta is awsome. Yeah working for MM would be cool. Spaffmolecule - do you need someone in marketing? :D

To be honest even if they employed me to make cups of teas and bake cookies all day I'd take it, seems like a really cool place to work and just oozing with creativity, like heaven for the imagination. But of course landing a 3D art job would be preferable :P

I am not understanding a word of this...I think I'll just stick to 2D.

The program he used was 3D Studio Max, made by Autodesk, and yes it is far too expensive for anyone to afford!!

Amazing job doing a 3D model of sackboy, it is very close to perfection and although I can't udnerstand what you guys are talking about either, it does seem very interesting, 3D modelling. Could you have him positioned in holding both his hands up like the cops are coming to arrest him. I don't know if it's really hard with some positions so I don't wanna make it too complex, I hope that's okay.

No that's easy, pretty much anything is possible once he's rigged ;)

dude those are amazing . i wish a could learn how to do all that . but its just looks like a second language to me .

could you do a pose like hes rapping with one hand up to his mouth and the other facing outwards ?
